Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital earned an “A” grade in the recently released spring update of independent hospital watchdog The Leapfrog Group’s elite national ratings program, recognizing hospitals’ strong commitment to patient safety. The Leapfrog Group shows key shifts among many hospitals on the A, B, C, D and F grades rating them on errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights was one of only 798 hospitals to receive an A, ranking among the safest hospitals in the United States. “When families come to our hospital, they trust us with their care,” said Susan Jadlowski, Sr. Vice President and CEO of Memorial Hermann Greater Heights. “We appreciate that trust, and we work diligently every day to affirm it by making sure we are doing everything possible to eliminate potential sources of harm. Our patients and their families deserve no less. As their healthcare provider of choice, we want to deliver high quality and safe care at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights every time they walk into our hospital.” The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national, independent nonprofit. I generally don’t get really excited to see people’s sock drawers. But when Katherine Griffith showed me hers, it was pretty awesome. Why? Griffith bought Marie Kondo’s book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing after her sister posted about it on Facebook. “My sister is a pack rat and she was raving about it,” said Griffith. “It was good timing for me to buy it. We were unpacking stuff from a renovation.” Griffith was drawn to language like this – “Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles?” – and the way that Kondo expounded on the liberation of getting rid of things that don’t bring you joy, even if they are otherwise useful, or expensive, or given as a gift. Kondo differentiates between Photo by Betsy Denson tidying and cleaning: “Tidying is Katherine Griffith shows off her drawers which utilize the KonMari the act of confronting yourself; method of folding, vertically rather than horizontally. cleaning is the act of confronting nature. Every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke. Houstonian Henry Lee Solomon did. Fortunately, he received lifesaving care at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, a certified Primary Stroke Center. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in or around the brain is blocked or ruptures. Strokes can affect people of all ages and backgrounds. It is the fourth cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of adult disability. Solomon remembers suddenly feeling odd. The next thing he remembers is waking up in the Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Emergency Center. Primary Stroke Center Improves Patient Outcomes For many stroke suffers like Solomon, receiving a clotdissolving drug called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) can help stop the stroke, reduce disability and prevent

Fitness From Scratch MaryBeth Smith for The Leader At this time of year, many people have one fitness focus: to look good in a swimsuit. Everyone wants to look and feel better, so it’s good to know that even moderate exercise can yield great benefits. However, strengthening and stretching can feel abstract and disconnected from daily life. Our everyday “functional movements,” like standing, bending, reaching, turning, and sitting, rely less on strength and power, and more on precision and coordination. When you learn to move with ease and efficiency, you can avoid familiar exercise-related injuries.
Our everyday “functional movements” ...rely less on strength and power, and more on precision and coordination. Here are some tips to improve your overall fitness, even if you feel like you are starting from scratch. Reach with your eyes. When you reach for something on a high shelf, look at your hand. Allow your low back to soften and arch as your neck arches to look up. As your eyes direct the movement and your low back frees your ribs, reaching feels effortless. Sore shoulders will be a thing of the past. Use more of your body. When you turn your head to look to one side, allow your shoulders to turn, as well. For example, as you look to the left, allow your left shoulder to go backwards, and your right shoulder
FELDENKRAIS®
to move forward. Allow your whole trunk, and perhaps even your pelvis, to participate in the movement. Your muscles do not work in isolation, so let them work as a coordinated team to make turning easier. Your sore neck will be a distant memory. Practice getting up and down. A 2012 study in Brazil showed a correlation between ease in getting down on the floor and back up again with increased life expectancy. Start slowly and easily, positioning a sturdy chair nearby to help you. Practice once or twice a day, until it is easy to get up from the floor using a chair. Soon, you will be able to get up without the chair, and with greater ease as you go along. Small improvements can make a big difference. Understanding the way you do daily movements can give you insights and greater awareness of yourself and your surroundings. When you know how you do what you do, you gain the ability to make changes where needed. If it’s been awhile since you have exercised, simple everyday movements can help you to make friends with your body again. If you consider yourself to be fit, you can increase your skill to include small, gentle, and tender actions. Humans are capable of so many kinds of movement, yet we use only a fraction of our ability each day. There’s more to being fit than how you look in a swimsuit. When you can carry on with the activities you enjoy, and feel good doing so – that, to me, is the heart of fitness.
Daily movements can feel difficult when lifelong habits become stale. If you’d like to learn how to move with less pain, and more ease and skill, let’s start the conversation. Email move@HoustonFeldenkrais.com
Kondo from P. 1A ify what to do with discarded items, but Griffith took hers to Goodwill. “My biggest takeaway is that you shouldn’t have more than you love,” said Griffith. “If you have it and you’re not using it, that’s wasteful.” Shepherd Park Plaza’s Valerie Thompson is another who really embraced the KonMari method. “I’ve always liked organizing and read a lot of books on the topic for fun, so that should tell you what kind of person I am,” she said. But Kondo’s book really resonated with her. “I liked the main theme, that possessions should spark joy,” she said. “That’s a pretty high
with
threshold.” Thompson also liked the ordered way that Kondo suggested working your way through your possessions. Clothes are first. Sentimental items are last because they are the hardest. Kondo also talked about possessions having feelings – that part didn’t grab Thompson so much but she did really get into the folding. “She talks so passionately about it,” said Thompson. “I went from four drawers to two and I can see everything.” With two small kids, organizing can be harder. “I’m always dealing with stuff,” she said. “It’s constant clutter management.”
BAYLOR
While her kids don’t evaluate their toys the same way, Thompson has hauled a lot of the old ones to the attic. If her daughter doesn’t ask for something in a six month span, it is donated. Thompson is so enthusiastic about organizing that she’s currently transitioning from her current career as a corporate interior designer to a professional organizer. She’ll be full time with Chronically Organized, come June. “I’m going to focus on residential – families and busy moms,” she said. “I’m also interested in time management so that’s included in my services too.”

Travel the Healthy Way Registered Dietitian with Advice for Eating ations it may be your only choice. Limit fried foods and extra sauces/dressings. Take a quick look at the restaurant’s nutritional value menu on your smart phone or app to find the best choice.
For The Leader By Melissa Hawthorne MS, RD, LD, CDE
Summer time is almost here! It is around this time of year, Americans begin to feel the need to get away for some much needed R&R. Traveling is exciting, adventurous, and enjoyable. However, some people feel that to enjoy your vacation to the fullest means your waistline will expand as a result. This does not have to be the case. While you’re making your packing checklist for your upcoming vacation, make sure to add these items below to your list. Regardless, if you are traveling by car, plane or boat, these travel tips will give you peace of mind so you do not have to worry about shedding those extra pounds when you get back home.
By Plane:
Find a sit-down restaurant – At the airport, bypass the fast food and seek a sit down restaurant, if possible. Normally these restaurants will have more meal options available and easier to make a healthier choice. Plan ahead – On-board airline food is not fine dining and depending on your airline and your flight, your options may be limited. Bring your meal from home to ensure a healthy meal. If a meal is provided during your flight, then see if special meal requests can be made and do so at least 48 hours in advance. Stay hydrated – Hydration is key to flying and feeling refreshed! For every 1-hour of air travel, a person loses 1 pint of water. To prevent dehydration as well as jet-lag, drink a glass of water per hour of flight.
By car:
Pack a cooler – Limit the temptations to eat unhealthy by packing your own snacks: fresh fruit, cherry tomatoes, 100-calorie nuts or popcorn packs, peanut butter sandwiches, tuna kits, hummus to-go packs, string cheese, etc. Drink water – Stay hydrated to keep you alert and limit caffeinated beverages. Stretch your legs! – It is recommended to not sit in one spot for more than 1 hour. Pull over and take a quick walk or bring a jump rope for you and your kids to release some energy. Have a back-up plan – Fast food may not be your first choice, but in certain situ-
By Cruise Ship:
Caution with buffets: Boats may be safe but the buffets are not. Scan the buffet line first. Once you’ve decided what you want to eat then begin adding food to your plate but fill half your plate with vegetables. Are you hungry? – This question should be asked to yourself frequently on a cruise ship. Food is available 24/7, so be conscious to only eat when
you are hungry and not bored. Think small – During dinner ask to order from their spa menu, which keeps portions small. Yes, you can have dessert, just limit it to one or two nights during your trip. Stay active – No excuse for not being active on a cruise ship. Do your research and pick a cruise with the most outdoor sport activities. Pack a lunch – Depending on your excursions, feel free to ask for a sack lunch to be prepared for you on your days off the boat.
lose continuity of care with other healthcare professionals who have most recently worked with the patients,” said Richard Huang, M.D., who serves as the medical director of inpatient rehabilitation at TIRR Memorial Hermann Greater Heights. This in-house rehabilitation proved extremely beneficial to Solomon, who initially had difficulties with speech, controlling saliva and using his upper extremities. His 10-day stay at TIRR Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, followed by outpatient therapy at the same site, has resulted in clear speech, saliva control and the ability to complete activities of daily living. “The rehabilitation staff members are very knowledge-
Safety from P. 1B Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay. Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D, or F score – to represent a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. The Hospital Safety Score uses national performance measures from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey and Health Information Technology
Supplement. Taken together, those performance measures produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. “Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital’s grade is a powerful reminder of its commitment to putting patient safety above all else, and we are pleased to recognize the persistent efforts of its clinicians and staff to protect your patients,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which administers the Hospital Safety Score. “Our families, neighbors, colleagues and friends deserve a hospital that will pull out all the stops to keep them safe, and we urge Memorial Hermann Greater Heights and all other A hospitals to preserve and renew their commitment to safety year after year.”

Hotel & Dining Tips:
Choose a “Fit” hotel – Hotels are making the switch to healthy living, by realizing their guests are more health conscious. Choose a hotel that has fitness amenities on property or close by. If you are traveling for business or pleasure search www.fitforbusiness.com to help find the amenities you desire. Condo living – Consider renting a condo so you have access to a kitchen which may make it easier to eat healthy. Aim for eating 2 out of the 3 meals per day in your condo. Order room service! – Room service can be a great option to eat healthy. No need to open the menu, just decide what you want to eat and ask “Can you make that for me?” Tasting mission – Some people center their vacation around food. Try to make food a part for your trip, not the purpose. Make it a goal to try different types of food as if you were on a food tasting tour.

Houston Heights Women’s Club
honors outgoing, new officers By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader It was a bittersweet evening for Melvalene Cohen, the 93year-old senior member of the Houston Heights Women’s Club who stepped down from her leadership position April 26. Due to the high number of those in attendance, the HHWC identified its voting members with red ballots during the tabulation process. The organization has continued to grow and Cohen welcomed these new officers with a butterfly pin and words of encouragement. The club also presented a gift platter to outgoing president Ginnie McConn for her two years of service. Club member Kelly Caraway Mathena will now take over. “I’ve had a lot of fun and made wonderful friends,” Cohen said. “However, I know
Kelly will do a great job. She’s a diplomat and very bright. Also, I will continue to stay involved and contribute as a member of the board.” Ginnie McConn has had numerous responsibilities and demands prior to assuming the presidency. With the transition, McConn’s schedule will become less hectic; however it is clear the experience is one she will cherish for many years to come. I dearly love this club,” Incoming president Kelly Mathena said. “We have two clubs here: the Heritage Group and the Evening Group. We are making it an objective to find more synergy between the two, and Ginnie left us in a great position to do business. Thanks to her, we have more fund-raising. I told Ginnie I hoped that I could fill even one of her shoes.” It’s no walk in the park for this president either. She has
a full-time job in a prestigious accounting firm, with many demands on her time, including as a member of Houston Heights Association and an active social life. Still, she could not turn her back on the opportunity. “I absolutely love the Heights, and cannot see myself leaving,” Mathena said. Club members Jilia Bakker and Linda Navarro were recognized as the co-chairs of this year’s successful “Project Prom Dress Drive.” As one of a large handful of outreach projects offered by the club, Project Prom Dress resulted in many, happy high school students in the Heights. Each young woman was invited to select a prom gown of her choice, at no cost, courtesy of the community and HHWC members.

From the Chamber: The power of buying local first in the Heights By Jacob Millwee For The Leader Houston has 2.196 million people as of the census of 2013. I guarantee you that in the three years since that data was reported we have only grown. The data for the number of businesses is a little older; the most recent info I could find was from 2010 which reported that the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown Area had 122,517 registered businesses, of which 119,005 are considered small businesses by my source (www.bizjournals.com). As of 2014, over half of the Fortune 500 companies call Houston home. With such massive numbers it can be easy to get lost in the crowd. Houston has 627 square miles, which has not-even-Google-knows how many neighborhoods. It is an amazing thing that the Heights is able to stand out like it does. Everybody, and I mean everybody, in Houston knows about the Heights! It is known for its good food, its art community, and its unique character. We want everybody to know about our Chamber and about each local business too. That is why the Greater Heights Area Chamber is constantly trying to improve our presence in the community. we are continuing our Passport to the Heights Program, and we have a brand new committee to oversee the Buy Local First initiative! Houston is also the most multicultural city in the nation. This is not hyperbole but statistical fact. That diversity is a product of Houston’s enormous trade presence through the Houston ship channel, the Port of Houston, and Bush Intercontinental Airport. Many things flow into the nation through Houston one way or another. Because of this, there are over 86 countries that have consulates in the Greater Houston Area. There are thriving communities of people from Vietnam, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Ghana,… the list goes on. That multiculturalism started with business, and continues with business. Harriet and Joe Foster Family YMCA Awards Local Woman Highest Volunteer Honor Tonya Knauth honored for her commitment to community For The Leader Every year the Harriet and Joe Foster Family YMCA recognizes an outstanding volunteer for her generosity of spirit, hard work and compassion for others. We are pleased to announce that Tonya Knauth has been named this year’s YMCA Volunteer of the Year. Knauth was presented with her award at the YMCA of Greater Houston’s Annual Celebration on Saturday, April 23 at the Houston Zoo. She joined 30 others, each representing an individual YMCA center. Tonya Knauth is a wife and mother of three active children. The whole family came to the Foster Family YMCA for various programs more than 10 years ago, and found their community for fun, exercise and recreation. Tonya is also an attorney and active volunteer, and wanted to contribute back to the Y by serving on the Board. Since then, she has been a passionate advocate for the Y in the community, serving on various committees, seeing the Foster Y through its expansion and renaming, and working to serve the rapidly changing area served by the Foster Y. Tonya is completing her second year of a two-year term as Board Chair. During her term the Foster Y has doubled its number of board members, and has engaged in vision and mission planning and renewed active committee work. The Foster Y intends to be the center of its community, and is well on its way. “As most of you know, at the YMCA, strengthening communities is our cause,” said Rosemary Lengefeld, Executive Director of the Harriet and Joe Foster Family YMCA. “Knauth has been an active part of our cause by giving her
time and talents to those who need it most. In fact, none of the work we do would be possible without the dedication and passion of our volunteers who put in so much effort in making our cause their own.” YMCA volunteers work tirelessly to help children, families and individuals overcome barriers and achieve more in areas of education, chronic disease prevention, swim safety

and family relationships. They also focus on ensuring that the YMCA’s written mission statement becomes a reality in the lives of thousands of people who walk through the centers’ doors each day.

Starting Solids Parenting Tutorial By Dr. Erica Davis Texas Childrens Pediatrics Feed your baby the way you wish you would eat. Infancy is one of the last times you will have total control over baby’s diet. Bad habits will likely form soon enough as they navigate the American diet, but this is the perfect time to introduce your baby to a diverse palate of foods, spices and herbs rich in nutrition and flavor without unhealthy fats, salt and excessive sugars. Homemade or store bought? When making homemade, buy organic produce. Don’t be afraid of seasonings but avoid salt and avoid honey (before age 1). When buying store bought foods, read the nutrition labels. Try to keep sugar content at or
below 12g per serving. Some fruits are very high in sugar. It doesn’t mean that baby can’t have them but select these in moderation. Also, keep sodium content low. Some of the toddler microwave entrees and snacks have a high sodium load and should be avoided. Push your baby’s palate. You will thank me later. Introducing herbs and spices early on will assure that once your baby becomes a toddler, you are not restricted to chicken tenders, fries and pasta at every family night out. Limiting baby to bland and overly sweetened foods (or worse, pushing milk instead of food) leads to picky eating later. Don’t wait until your kid is 2 to say “eat your canned vegetables” and expect a good response.
Fruit is not a meal. It can be an adjunct. Add a few spoonfuls of fruit to oatmeal or to a veggie your baby doesn’t like much. It can be a part of a fruit/veggie snack for an older baby. But dinner can’t be just applesauce or just peaches. We are attempting to teach balance. Food allergies vs food intolerances. The difference is that an allergy can be serious. An intolerance is just annoying. Allergies can cause hives or breathing problems. An intolerance could be a rash on baby’s face from eating citrus (acid on the skin) or gas from eating broccoli. The rules have changed. You may hear people say not to give baby certain foods until they turn one (like shellfish, berries, peanut butter). That
was the standard for years until allergists realized that our efforts to prevent food allergies were actually hurting instead of helping. The rule now is let them eat whatever they can swallow with the exception of honey. What about milk? Baby will be weaned from formula or breast usually by one year. Learning to enjoy solids will make it an easier transition. By 9 months, milk should be decreased to about 24 ounces per day. Food should be offered as 3 meals + 1-2 snacks to replace those milk calories. At 1 year, we switch to whole milk. Some babies don’t like the switch and are perfectly content with food and water. That’s ok. If the baby has a balanced diet, we can get protein and calcium sources from our foods.
Branché A new shopping experience By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
Photos by Betsy Denson Left to right: Moore, Cravey and Buss. Right, Kelly Matula checks out some clothes at a recent house party.
Sometimes a conversation between friends can be the spark of a viable business. Such was the case with Lisa Buss, Julie Cravey and Emily Moore who hatched a business plan for Branché early in the year. Buss who has experience with direct sales wondered aloud to Moore and Cravey, who both used to work in wholesale for Ralph Lauren, about doing home parties in the area featuring highly curated clothing. The idea struck a chord and when the trio realized there was a Dallas Apparel and Accessories Market happening in February, they went over to test the waters. “We went with everyone we know in mind,” said Moore. “Other mothers like us, our own mothers – we weren’t thinking of one specific body type. We wanted to find things that would flatter a range of body types.” The items they brought back formed the inventory of their first home shows, casual
affairs where neighbors and friends could come shop, eat, and get styling advice for how to wear the pieces. Cravey said that they’ve gotten good feedback about the price point of the items they offer. Buss says the appeal of having something that not everyone will be wearing is helping the business. They do a one size run of most items. “I think they had a good variety,” said Megan Stevens, who recently attended a Branché home party. “They’re right on cue with styles.” Branché, according to their business card, is French for hip, cool and trendy. And while the travelling boutique owners will go to market every three months or so to stock up on the latest and greatest, they’ve also made connections with designers and showroom managers who have started to send items directly to them. Buss said they are doing two to three shows a week, both in the area – Buss lives in Candlelight Plaza and Moore lives in Shepherd Park Plaza – and as far away as Dallas and Longview. Recently, they’ve decided to put down some brick and mortar roots across the street from Haum Salon at 3415 Oak Forest Drive. The shop will have limited hours and be available by appointment for those who want to host a party or just shop for themselves. Currently they have a presence on Facebook and next month will be the launch of their web site at www.brancheallday.com. “The response has been incredible,” said Buss. “Everyone has been very supportive.”
