BNSF to fix damaged Alba rail crossing By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com

Realtor® Heights Specialist & Oak Forest Resident

Thanks to the concerns of a few local residents and some reporting by The Leader, the BNSF train crossing on Alba behind Lutheran High North is about to get a lot less noisy – and safer. According to BNSF representative Joseph Faust, temporary repairs have been completed on the crossing as of Tuesday night and a “full rehab is anticipated inside the 45 days.” “We have a regular policy where we inspect our tracks and safety is important to BNSF,” Faust said. “We’re going to replace part of the concrete right away and we will investigate and do further remediation.” The issues with the rail crossing were first brought to the attention of The Leader last week by several residents in the area, including Sybren and Kathryn van der Pol who own Ad-

American Legion Post 560 on the edge of Garden Oaks is turning into a hopping hub of fun, and the entire community is invited. The veterans have added another event to their list of regular fish fries, barbecues, steak nights and outdoor festivals. On the second Wednesday of every month, Post 560 is hosting its Greater Heights Comedy Night and providing lucky audiences with more laughs than should be legal. All are welcomed. The club in Post 560 is the perfect place for stand-up comedy. The small stage allows for all to see, and the room, even when full, remains intimate and inclusive. The comedians performing are professional, na-

tional acts with TV credits, and most have entertained for the USO throughout the US and world. There is a $20 admission charge to comedy night which includes a catered dinner in the smoke-free environment prepared by a rotating list of locally owned restaurants. Admission also includes two drink tickets for alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages. On Wednesday June 8, the next Comedy Night, the new Liberty Kitchen located directly across Alba Street will be catering. “And all the proceeds from Greater Heights Comedy Night go directly into the American Legion’s veteran services and the immediate community,” said Naro Mak, See Legion P. 5A

A Greater Heights takeover? Seems like it D on’t get me wrong. I love the Creek restaurants. I like the food, the vibe, all of it. I just take issue with their branding. I know Gary Mosley has fond memories of visiting the Hill Country as a kid and apparently enjoyed himself immensely in Austin when he attended a San Marcos prep school. He’s told other publications that he wanted to bring a relaxed vibe to Houston with his restaurants. Super. But why does Dry Creek have to have Austin, Texas on its roof to convey the feeling? Houston has trees, increasing green space, and a lot of people who are keeping it weird right here in Bayou City. Maybe I’m just still remembering how people in Austin reacted to my move from that city to Houston in 2004. They recoiled as if it was akin to descending into the Seventh Circle of Hell. I exaggerate, only a little. I had never been to Houston except by interstate down the not so scenic I45, so I wasn’t exactly excited either. But then I got here, my husband and I bought a house just north of Oak Forest, and I realized that I really liked my city within a city in H-town. Which brings me to my

next point about cultural and geographic identity. Does my neighborhood have any? I first started to wonder this when Memorial Hermann rebranded themselves as Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital. It’s inside the loop though and serves a large radius so it does have a pretty big leg to stand on. Then the new PetSmart on 43rd Street took out a billboard on 610 that welcomed people to their North Heights location. North Heights? On 43rd? And last week, a coming brewery on Wakefield in Garden Oaks took to Facebook with their new name which is, you guessed it – Great Heights Brewing Company. I was curious about the choice and the brewery’s Patrick Christian was nice enough to share what was behind it. He said that he and his partner Sean had to come up with a name many months ago before they could register the business and raise capital. He said it was an important objective for them to operate a neighborhood brewery with a taproom the neighbors could easily visit on foot or bicycle. “We initially targeted The Heights as an area where that

Betsy Denson concept would make sense,” he said. “We also appreciated the duality of meaning behind the name and understood that if we were unable to find the perfect building in The Heights, we would still be comfortable calling ourselves Great Heights. Our bird logo was designed with that in mind.” Between dry-area and flood plain restrictions, it turned out that there weren’t that many suitable buildings in The Heights to convert to a brewery. “Sean and I are both residents of Oak Forest and spent many sessions at Petrol Station discussing our plans,” said Christian. “When we spotted the property for lease on the same block of Wakefield, we were immediately interested.

It says Austin, but the laid back eatery Dry Creek is in Houston. And that might not be the only identity crisis in the area.

It satisfied our objective of finding a spot in a great neighborhood, with the added bonus of becoming instant neighbors with two great beer bars.” Ok. I’ll accept that too, but if the Heights Diner crops up at 43rd and T.C. Jester I’m going to start to get a complex. I asked Jacob Millwee, president of the Heights Greater Chamber of Commerce, what he considered to be the Greater Heights and he said that it depended on who you asked. “As Chamber president, I can stand on Heights Boulevard and talk to people who

have a very definite idea of what the area of the Heights is,” he told me. “My parents live in Sugarland and to them, I just live in Houston.” Millwee said that after World War II when those who had grown up in the Heights came back to the area to settle down, they moved into adjacent neighborhoods to the Heights because their parents still lived in the original homes. To them, 19th Street and 11th Street at Studewood were “downtown.” As Heights real estate became more expensive, people with Heights

Pockets of resistance from the Marines The reader. The U.S. Marine Corps is currently fighting two wars, and taking casualties in both. The number of active duty troops is being cut from 184,000 to 182,000. It has a budget this year of $25 billion, which is 4 percent of the Navy’s budget (on paper, the Marine Corps is part of the Dept. of the Navy, always a sticky point among Leathernecks.) Congress, the White House and top civilian Defense Dept. brass are demanding the Corps allow women into the three combat branches – infantry, artillery and armor. (More on that in a minute.) So what are the Jarheads discusssing, debating and wondering about? The no-pockets policy. It seems there is an informal suggestion (read: YOU WILL OBEY!) that Marines in uniform should not put their hands in their pockets. It looks sloppy. Specificcally, Marine Corps Order P1020.34G, the order on Marine Corps uniform regulations, reads: “The use of chewing gum, chewing tobacco, cigarettes; hands in pockets; or the consumption of food or beverage while walking in uniform or while in formation, are examples of activities that detract from an appropriate military presence. However, good judgment will govern the application of this policy in the field environment.” The “good judgment” part is a decided departure from most military orders, but let’s march on. A publication called “Task & Purpose,” which I had never heard of and now you and I both have, got interested in this because of a semicolon. (Hang on, we own the Marines along with the other armed forces and thus should be interested in what’s going on.) Since the words “hands in pockets” is bracketed by semicolons, “Task & Purpose” wondered, does this mean don’t put your hands in your pockets while walking or in formation? The Leathernecks fired back, so to speak. Capt. Dominic Pitrone, a Marine spokesman, replied: “If you notice, the words ‘; hands in pocket;’ are bracketed by semicolons, which make it a stand-alone statement, separate from the full sentence and the text ‘while walking.’ The grammatical (and official) interpretation of this is that you are being told that you cannot keep your hands in your pocket, period.” OK, I agree that this is a minor matter. and certainly Capt. Pitrone has better things to do, like getting ready for his 12th combat deployment. So to save everyone time and trouble, we shall solve this

Lynn Ashby Columnist

problem. First, the obvious answer is to issue trousers (never pants) without pockets, or sew up the pocket openings. Maybe instead of pockets the supply sergeant issues everyone a backpack to hold stuff. Wait, they already have them. The Marines refer to the item by a military term: “backpacks.” Any of these solutions might cause problems of where to put small items such as gum, coins or hand grenades, so we follow the lead of Scottish regiments who wore kilts in combat through World War I. They still wear them in ceremonies, but traditional kilts don’t have pockets. The laddies solved that problem centuries ago with the sporran, the purse-like pouch on a belt hanging in the front of the kilt covering the crotch. In combat, insert a small skillet in the sporran and it doubles as a flak jock. (Incidentally, USMC rules also prohibit officers in uniform from using an open umbrella or pushing a baby buggy. And one of my sons, a Marine officer, had to receive permission from his superiors before getting married.) Remember the no-pockets policy also includes other prohibitions such as chewing gum or tobacco, cigarettes or consuming food or beverage while walking in uniform or while in formation. No one wants to see the Presidential Honor Guard lined up on the White House South Lawn to greet the King of Canada or simply to welcome President Trump, back from his daily flip-flop, with a few good men chewing tobacco or nibbling a Big Mac and sipping a Coke. It not only presents an unmilitary scene but could be taken as sponsorships. Come to think of it, considering the Corps’ sequestered budget, a banner reading: “The Fourth of July parade is brought to you by Ford” could defray some costs, not to mention: “The Iraq invasion – this Bush is for you!” Then we have the female situation. For some time the PC forces have been pushing to put women in submarines, SEAL teams and as parachute testers. The last holdout positions in the armed services were the aforementioned three combat branches – infantry, artillery and armor. The other services have gone along with the orders, but the Ma-

rines continue to resist, not overtly, you understand, but they are fighting wars, getting gunned down at Chattanooga recruting stations and serving in hot spots the rest of us don’t even know about. Putting Marine females into a foxhole south of Sinjar is not real high on the Corps’ priorities. The USMC even ran its own tests which showed that female Marines had problems carrying a “wounded” 220-pound grunt with fully loaded gear – well, at least he was fully loaded – from the bar, past the MPs, to a waiting getaway tank. Still, the Marine Corps has long had the fewest female members of any of the military services – fewer than 8 percent of active-duty troops, compared to the Navy with 18 percent, the Army with

14 percent female and the Air Force with 19 percent. Must that 8 percent keep their hands out of their purses? What if their makeup is running and they need a Kleenex? Well, somehow the Jarheads will figure ways. For their miniscule budget, they have always been low man on the supply pole, and have a saying: “We have had so little for so long, we can now do anything with nothing forever.” Female Marines will join the combat arms, at least those who qualify on the Mortar Catching Range. And as for the no-pockets policy, simple: just abolish semicolons. “We who have anything with nothing.” Ashby is Semper Fi at ashby2@comcast.net

Renaming Reagan shows incompetence of school board

Dear Editor: Renaming school mascots and the schools themselves, shows the incompetence of our school board. The public elected members of our school board to ensure our children received an excellent education like reading, writing, arithmetic (math), science, history, etc. I have never heard my grandkids or my kids complain about the name of their mascot or their school’s name. All of this nonsense is the making of activists on our school board to show their power and incompetence. Ask an Indian how they feel living under the influence of the government, “Department of Indian Affairs.” They are living in poverty, can’t own land, not getting quality education or health care, and they fight drug addiction or alcoholism from despair created by the government. If you asked an Indian about all of this political correctness generated by people like HISD school board, most will tell

ties moved even a little farther out. “The concept of the Greater Heights is a gradual growing sense of community,” Millwee said. “It radiates outward like ripples in a pool.” I wondered what The Oaks Business Association felt about any continuing trend since they serve businesses north of I-610. TOBA President Greg Ryden says he gets it but wishes things were different. “It’s too bad Oak Forest/ Garden Oaks can’t get better traction in the media,” Ryden said. “We either get called north or northwest Houston or Heights area. We are neither of those things. I think Oak Forest or Garden Oaks or even Greater Oaks just sounds too much like a neighborhood, and not an identifiable area of town, like Spring Branch or Meyerland, but calling ourselves Oakland is probably not a solution.” Maybe I’ll mull over an allencompassing name while I have a beer in the Hill Country. On West 20th Street. In the actual Heights.

Email us your letters: news@theleadernews.com you it doesn’t bother them! That was the only recognition they received – maybe our PC people want to hide these facts from our children! Maybe our school board should name our school after some Indians like Tonto High, Apache Middle School, Blackhawk Elementary. As far as changing the name of schools because they were confederates is also absurd. The Confederate States of America was part of our history and the people involved were a part of it. Are we still fighting the Civil War? Or is our school board fighting it? As I understand, some on our school board are Hispanic, they didn’t have a dog in the fight, so why should they be allowed to vote on this name change agenda? I feel the public should call for a recall election or the impeachment of our school board based on a lack of performance/incompetence. The parents, our children and the public should be allowed to “vote” on this radical agenda of the school board, and not leave it up to a group of activists. Ray A. Bartula

Many have noticed the big, majestic birds soaring in the skies in our area. While there are different possibilities in terms of species, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department confirms that the majority of these birds are likely to be Red-Tailed Hawks. In case you haven’t noticed, they are particularly active this month. It’s hatching season so they are spending hours sailing on the wind, hunting pray to feed their chicks. Red-Tailed Hawks are recognized by their brown back-feathers, white-ish breasts, and rust-colored tails. Unlike their cousins, vultures, they do not eat carrion, preferring live food. They often perch on telephone poles, power lines or in tall trees and take advantage of the rich hunting offered by the bayous throughout The Leader’s readership area. These birds are called “raptors,” a title reserved for those in a royal avian lineage. Raptors are carnivorous birds - flesheaters - that hunt, kill or eat other animals; they all share exceptional eyesight, strong talons designed to destroy, and sharp, tissue-tearing beaks. While raptors include eagles, owls, falcons, and vultures, one of the best examples is our Redtailed Hawk. Most in the scientific community agree that some of the raptors in Texas evolved from dinosaurs. Authorities have even suggested that they are a very distant relative of theropod dinosaurs, the most famous being the Tyrannosaurus Rex. These neo-dinosaurs help keep undesirable wild populations in check today: rats, mice, squirrels, and snakes. However, they also eat our friends such as opossums, other birds (sometime plucking them right out of the air), young chickens, and even kittens and puppies. From the top of their heads to the tip of their tails, Red-tails can grow more than two feet in length and weigh up to four pounds. Avian experts estimate Red-tails can haul off with pray about half their weight, and they are the most abundant raptors in Texas. “Yes, I see Red-tails all the time,” said Oak Forest resident and avid birder, Cecily Wayne. “They sail over the bayou hunting with their keen eyesight,

and love to perch on the poles behind Myti-Burger. Red-tailed Hawks grow big, with a wing span up to four feet or more, and they are magnificent to watch.” Nancy Ward and her husband own one of the beautiful old, homes in the Heights, and have had all-too-frequent visits from Red-tails. Ward works with Pup Squad Animal Rescue and often fosters orphaned puppies until they are old enough to place in permanent homes. “One afternoon, I took six pups out in the backyard for their first introduction to grass,” Ward said. “I would carry them to the pen, two at a time. On my last trip out, I caught something odd out of the corner of my eye. It was a hawk sitting on the garage next door. It was glaring at the puppies and it was huge. Ward said she was “terrified,” but managed to scoop up all six pups and moved them into the house. Lieutenant Kevin Glass works for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in north Houston, and has been called to the scene of many injured hawk rescues for capture and rehabilitation. “Red-tailed Hawks can be aggressive,” he said. “I’ve been on the receiving end of their talons more times than I want to remember. They are also protected by both state and federal laws. It’s not only illegal to kill one, but also to own even a feather, talon or foot. It can result in steep fines. I always tell people that, if they find a dead Red-tail, just leave it.”

Contributed Photo Red-Tailed Hawks, also known as raptors, have been spotted throughout the community. The birds have been noted for their aggressiveness and are protected by both state and federal laws.

Can pets have PTSD?

Dear Tabby, We recently adopted an older dog with a “checkered” past. She is fearful of lots of stuff and we’re curious to know if dogs can have something akin to Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome? Dealing with past traumas in Garden Oaks

Dear Dealing With Past Traumas, When most people think of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, veteran soldiers might come to mind or perhaps someone who has experienced a bad car accident or a natural disaster. The reality is that people are

not the only ones capable of having this anxiety disorder; animals experience it as well. PTSD is an anxiety disorder or change in behavior following a stressful event; therefore, anything deemed stressful by an animal has the potential for creating a stress disorder. “A severe thunderstorm, a natural disaster (flood earthquake, tornado, etc.), gunfire, war, bombings, abuse, and attacks by other dogs are just a few known events that have caused PTSD in dogs,” said Dr. Dorothy Black, clinical assistant professor in emergency and critical care at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. “The most common behavior changes seen are fear, shaking, shying away from people (including those they know), hiding, urinating when greeted, inappropriate elimination, (in the house, on a bed, etc.) howling or bark-

ing, and/or aggressive behavior,” explained Black. It is important to remember that these animals have been wronged in some way whether intentionally or not and should not receive harsh punishment or harmful reactions from a person when the animal displays these unwanted or odd behaviors. However, it is possible, just as in humans, for dogs to recover and even eventually come out of this disorder. Black recommends seeking the help of an animal behaviorist, trainer, or veterinarian to start the healing process for your dog. These specialists can help create a plan and monitor the dog’s progress. They can help determine if your pet may benefit from medications along with behavior modification. When people feel stressed or frazzled often times they just need a getaway for some private time, and the same applies for pets. Creating a kennel for the pet, if

Pet of the week

one does not already exist, could possibly help the pet feel safer. “Creating a routine with set meal times, dog walks, and play time gives your pet a sense of control,” said Black, “Ultimately your goal is to desensitize your dog to situations they find stressful.” There are many approaches to this, but all involve slow, controlled, small doses of stressful events and reinforcement of improved behavior. If your animal has been through something traumatic, do not assume that any odd behavior they might be displaying is permanent. Because they cannot tell us how they are feeling, it is important to take their mental health seriously and be patient with them so that hopefully the pet can regain a confident, happy, and healthy lifestyle. Do you have a burning question for Tabby? If so, email her at deartabbyquestions@gmail. com.

Meet Viveca. This 4 month old black and tan Chiweenie is still a little fearful of everyday noises, (sprinklers suddenly coming on is super-scary!) but is slowly beginning to trust that life is good and that she’s safe. “Vivvy’s” littermate was recently adopted, leaving her all alone, so she’s a little lonely and very ready to find her new beginning...could that be you? If so, contact K-9 Angels Rescue at www.K-9AngelsRescue.org or www.facebook.com/k9angelsrescue.

Post from P. 1A comedy night producer, host, former Marine, and Post 560 Legionnaire. Mak has been a professional stand-up comedian for 15 years. His objective is to help Post 560 become a stopover for world-class headlining acts. As a Marine himself, Mak also feels a particular commitment to Post 560. He’s nothing short of amazed at the support offered by the post and its surrounding neighborhood. Comedy night is a way for Mak to give back to a group of veterans and a community he treasures. Sam Demaris was the headliner at comedy night earlier in May and spoke highly of

BNSF from P. 1A olf Hoepfl and Son Garage on North Shepherd Drive. Extensive wear and tear on the concrete left the road broken and jutting upward with the rebar exposed. “When we first called them, they hadn’t done anything yet to fix the issue,” Sybren van der Pol said. “We’ve been worried about the cross ties wearing

the experience. Demaris has appeared in several comedy specials on TV, and traveled to 11 countries entertaining US servicemen and women with the USO. “I really enjoyed performing at Post 560,” Demaris said. “The room is a great size for stand-up, and the audience was so responsive. I hope to return soon,” he concluded. Area resident and first-time audience member Stephanie Koteras said she had a blast. Koteras attended the May show, and says she will be attending Comedy Night every month from here on in. “The whole package was great,” Koteras said. “The food and drinks were good and the comedy was so much fun. Plus down and it’s worrying that, if the train comes, it doesn’t take much for them to fall off and cause a derailment.” One resident nearby, who declined to give his name, said the situation was even worse with Lutheran High North’s campus so close to the rail. “I think a derailment is the last thing a bunch of kids

it’s right in the neighborhood. I highly recommend it to everyone.” Most of the events at American Legion Post 560 are family oriented. Comedy Night, Producer Mak reminds us, is not one of them.

Doors open for dinner at 7 pm. The show starts at about 8 p.m. and includes a host, several acts, and a headliner. The fun normally ends between 10 and 10:30. Come hungry, thirsty, and ready to laugh.

needs to see or deal with,” he said. “Not to mention who might get hurt if they’re waiting for the train to pass. I could deal with the noise of it scraping by on the concrete, but at the end of the day it’s still a train we’re talking about, it’s not exactly small.” Other crossings in the area have wear and tear, but not to

the level of the Alba crossing. BNSF officials say a fix should be coming in the coming month or so and the temporary fix will help alleviate both the noise and safety concerns in the area.

CROWNS CAN’T GET CAVITIES... CAN THEY?! Chase Baker, D.D.S.

S

o you’ve had a crown placed over a tooth in order to protect and restore the tooth. Now, you’re in the clear. You don’t need to worry about having any further problems with that tooth because a crown can’t have a cavity on it, right? WRONG. Having a crown placed does not mean that the dental hygiene around that area can be neglected. Decay can still form at the margin of the crown where the tooth and the crown meet. It is extremely important that continued oral hygiene is diligently maintained. Regular check-ups along with x-rays with your dentist can ensure that your existing crowns are monitored. This ensures that if any problems arise, they are caught early and addressed as necessary. Be sure to follow up with your dentist to be certain the investment you’ve made with your teeth is in tip-top shape. Prepared as a public service to promote better dental health. MESSAGE OF THE WEEK

To Be HoneST

S

ometimes being honest may seem brutal and impolite. And indeed sometimes it is. Just because something is true does not mean that it needs to be said. But, telling people what we really think is sometimes necessary. Do we want to spend our free time with obnoxious people? Sounds awful, right? Then perhaps we shouldn’t say we’d love to. This takes courage, and tact, but it will spare feelings, ours and theirs, in the long run. Most of the time a polite rejection of an invitation will do the trick and the person gets the hint, but other times our very politeness seems to invite them back for more. That is when we may need to be honest and tell the person that we are not comfortable spending time with them. This should be done in a way that is honest and yet gentle. Often when we are tempted to start a sentence with the phrase “To be honest we are searching for a tactful way to say no, or perhaps concocting a “white lie. Usually this phrase (“to be honest) conceals more of the truth than it reveals. Mark Twain wryly observed, in one of his posthumous essays, that one of the privileges of the grave is that you can finally tell the truth and say what you think, at least if you put it in writing. Consider the example of Jesus, who occasionally spoke harsh truths to men in power, despite the risk to his own comfort and well-being. You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. R.S.V. Matthew 12:34

Texas Music Festival is back for another performance

Turtles on tap at Karbach Brewing Company

Shortly after arriving at the University of North Texas State as a freshman, I learned that the school was more popular with musicians than athletes; at that time anyway. My suitemate was a Canadian percussionist and he kept us mesmerized while practicing with his one snare drum and stand. He incorporated the drum, the stand, the floor and anything that was close enough. It seemed that two thirds of the school were percussion majors and the rest were divided up by artists, other musicians and business majors. I left with an appreciation for all music genres, including orchestras. Ask me more than that, though, and my head spins. I am a visual person, everything else just flies over my head. Fortunately, as I’ve pointed out here many times, we live in an awesome city that has culture spilling over the sides. Last summer, I introduced you to the Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival (TMF), now celebrating 27 years and Heights resident and General/Artistic Director Alan Austin, a violinist who participated in the very first TMF in 1990 when he was a student at the UH Moores School of Music. They’re back! The June 3 through July 2 international music residency, based at the University of Houston (UH) Moores School of Music, attracts classical music’s rising stars from top tier music conservatories worldwide to study and perform in concert with world-class soloists, conductors and faculty artists at the UH Moores Opera House and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The intensive four-week orchestral fellowship program is guided by renowned guest conductors, members of Houston’s orchestras, faculty from the Moores and Shepherd schools of music, and other distinguished artists. This is a very serious competition with only 95 fellows chosen for the festival orchestra out of 400 applicants from the U.S. and 22 countries. I know you were curious to ask this question, can any of them ride a unicycle? Actually, yes, James Masanotti, Violin and a resident of The Woodlands, rides a unicycle! This is serious reporting here folks, who else can bring you this amazing tidbit? No one. Masanotti, (what a cool name) went to high school and did his undergraduate study in South Carolina. He is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Violin Performance at the University of Houston Moores School of Music. Career highlights: performing a Cantata by J.S. Bach in Bach’s home church of St. Thomas in Leipzig (a city in Germany) and performing with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Masanotti has multiple outside interests in addition to riding that unicycle: hiking, playing board games and Dungeons & Dragons with friends, and reading. He hopes to play in an

The Greater Houston chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers is hosting their fifth Local Beer for Local Species to benefit the Turtle Survival Alliance and local turtle conservation. The event is from 5-9 p.m. this Thursday, May 26, at Karbach Brewing Co. - 2032 Karbach St. The non-profit will have custom pint glasses, turtle guest visitors, and local turtle experts on hand to answer all your pressing turtle questions. Find the Greater Houston Chapter AAZK on Facebook for more info.

orchestra, as well as pursue musical opportunities in jazz violin. For the record, I ride a unicycle, too. Does that mean I can become a musician, too? No. I do like these odd tidbits about the musicians, though. Here’s another. Tomasz Kowalczyk is a percussionist, and recently began an intense bodybuilding regimen that has helped him with both managing stress as well as with handling the physical challenges of playing percussion. That sounds better than a Dungeons & Dragons all-nighter. Kowalczyk grew up in Poland and moved to the U.S. by himself to pursue a degree at Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. He moved to Houston in August 2015 to pursue a Master’s degree at the Shepherd School of Music. Since then, Houston has become his home and he enjoys living in a city that is so vibrant, he says. Some of his family members were amateur folk musicians back home, but he is the first in his family to pursue music as a career. Tomasz has attended multiple summer festivals and had the privilege of performing in such premier halls as Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Salle Pleyel in Paris, KKL in Lucerne, Boston Symphony Hall, Seiji Ozawa Hall and Koussevitzky Music Shed at Tanglewood and Verizon Hall in Philadelphia. These musicians get to travel a lot, I’m rethinking my career choice. Saturday Orchestra Series performances are reserved seating and parking is free. A variety of Series Packages individual tickets may be purchased online at www.tmf.uh.edu and through the UH Moores School Ticket Office 713-743 3313. The UH Moores Opera House is on the UH Main Campus, I-45 at Cullen Boulevard, Entrance #16. All faculty, guest artist, and conductor biographies and photos may be found at http:// www.tmf.uh.edu Cohen is the founder and manager of First Saturday Arts Market. Never let him sing in your presence. Contact him through his website ArtValet.com.

Kroger on 11th Street to install beer and wine bar

Former Piatto Ristorante on Studewood taken over by new restaurant You may have noticed the former Piatto Ristorante location, located at 1111 Studewood, undergoing renovations. Foodies can rejoice, as the location has been taken over by a new restaurant, Arthur Ave. The restaurant says they’re paying tribute to the heritage of Italian-American cuisine centered on hearty dishes and classic red sauce. A search on the restaurant’s Facebook and social sites show the restaurant opening Summer 2016.

With recent headlines including grocery stores and alcohol sales, we have good news for beer and wine drinkers. The Kroger on 11th Street will be launching Cork & Tap this summer. The bar will serve craft beer, with roughly 7 to 10 beers on tap, and wine pours by the glass. A representative from the beverage department said there will be a two drink max for customers. The tentative grand opening date is slated for this July. After a call to the Studemont Street location, their beverage department confirmed that the 11th Street location was currently the only location to take on the new beer and wine bar and they were not aware of any news for additional Cork & Taps.

Triple A first opened doors in 1942 and has continuously served classic dishes throughout the years. A neighborhood staple that will surely be missed.

Photo by Christina Martinez Nam Eatery, a Vietnamese eatery located at 502 E. 20th St., is serving up Bahn Mi for $5.

King’s BierHaus coming to the neighborhood Pearland’s beloved biergarten is making its way into the Heights. The biergarten started in Pearland as a 45 seat restaurant, a place to get a great bier and a bratwust while you were getting your car washed on the same property. That 45 seat restaurant quickly grew into a recognized establishment and the family is bringing their dream here in the neighborhood at 2044 E. T.C. Jester Blvd. as King’s Bierhaus. The former tenant of this location was Pecos Grill. Nam Eatery receiving rave reviews The opening of Nam Eatery was lost on my radar. The Vietnamese eatery opened at 502 E. 20th St., just near competitors Jenni’s Noodle House. On a recent Nextdoor thread this month, neighbors have been raving about Nam Eatery. I ventured recently to try their $5 Pork Bahn Mi, and since then I’ve been back twice to sample the menu and each time I left happily satisfied. The restaurant’s menu features several delights focusing on fresh produce, all for a steal of a price. Give them a try and report back.
