Kick bach at Karbach
Karbach Brewing Co. adds new additions, growing production and amenities By Christina Martinez christina@theleadernews.com If you asked the owners and staff when they embarked on this journey in 2011, if they thought they would be finalizing a $15 million dollar expansion project this month, the answer would be a resonant no; but that is exactly what is happening for this growing North Houston brewery. In three years, Karbach outgrew their 33,000 barrel capacity brew house, squeezing just about every drop of beer out of their storage tanks. The solution? An upgrade. “We actually looked outside
the city to build the new brewery, but we really wanted to stay in Houston,” David Graham, of Marketing and Branding said, also noting that they wanted to specifically stay on Karbach Street. “We started poking around to one property owner and then to another property owner.” The original poking and prying came from inquiries about the grassy lot next to the original brewery. Beer tour attendees would park on the vacant lot where the new brewery sits, but at the time the lot belonged to another owner. “We didn’t own it, but everyone would park there for
the tours because there really wasn’t much of a place to park,” Graham said. “Finally the guy who owned the lot confronted us about it, but he was really nice about it. Eventually we just bought it from him.” That grassy parking lot isn’t where Karbach stopped their purchase. Where the current parking lot sits now, was once home to a corner gas station. Property was also acquired south of the original brew house, with room for more growth, including warehousing and office space. See Karbach, P. 6B

Historic Magnolia Ballroom offers ambiance, flexibility
Wedding Headquarters
By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com When planning the “when” and “where” of any summertime event like weddings, receptions and other social gatherings, few places offer old-time historic charm like Houston’s Historic Magnolia Ballroom. Nestled at the corner of Franklin Street and Milam Street in downtown Houston, the Historic Magnolia Ballroom offers multiple rooms for its clients, including a buffet room, bar area, kitchen, a main ballroom and a balcony area overlooking the Buffalo Bayou. Special Events Manager Dewayne Ross said the venue has attracted a wide breadth of cultural gatherings, weddings and celebrations through its rustic appeal. The building itself has come a long way since the early 1900s. Originally housing Houston Ice & Brewing Co. until 1950, the building was home to a number of different businesses, including the renowned Bismarck restaurant. Current owner Bart Truxillo purchased it from a bank trust in 1968 and the building’s condition was dire. “It had been totally abandoned by that point,” Truxillo said. “Homeless people had been using the ballroom as their home and had damaged many of the fixtures and stained glass windows

inside of the building.” These days, the building is a living piece of Houston history and is listed on the National See Ballroom, P. 6B
