Houston Panini & Provision’s

Box Lunch

By Christina Martinez Christina@theleadernews.com At the corner of 34th and Ella you’ll find a local foods grocer and craft sandwich shop that is owned an operated by some familiar faces. The local spot, Houston Panini & Provisions, is home to brothers Alexander and David Colby who attended Oak Forest Elementary and, friend, Charles Martin, who graduated from Waltrip. The trio came together through their culinary background and through an old family recipe. The Colby family has kept their grandpa’s lemon popcorn recipe, Lemon-D-Lite, a secret for decades. With grandpa’s approval, the brothers started selling the family recipe at farmers markets last fall. With the help of a business owner, the small popcorn

entrepreneurship was able to turn their vision into a local grocer and sandwich shop. The shop around the corner features a box-lunch that is perfect for a dine-in lunch or a quick pick-up and is The Leader’s entree of the month for a deal price of $10. This month The Leader suggests the Goat Cheese Veggie Box. This Panini features grilled zucchini, squash, roasted red peppers, sun dried tomatoes, pine nuts, goat cheese, basil pesto, with a drizzle of balsamic gastrique. The box comes with a craft soda and your choice of popcorn or chips – but we recommend the popcorn choice. “Here at Houston Panini & Provisions our focus is to bring a unique and home experience to the community,” Executive Chef David Colby said. “From the art on the walls to the provisions on

our shelves we are dedicated to helping small and local entrepreneurs like ourselves.” “We have all lived in the area our whole lives so we want nothing more than to service our community with quality products, with respect for our city. Our main goal is to bring better food options to the neighborhood and to show our area that we have more here than just a “fast food alley.”’ Houston Panini & Provisions offer the perfect spot for lunch or your morning stop for coffee. The shop around the corner has free WiFi and has a side terrace with a hydroponic herb garden that will open to customers in the near future. For more information on Houston Panini & Provisions visit HoustonPanini.com or find them on Facebook at facebook. com/houstonpaninipress.

By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com

Back in March Chipotle confirmed to The Leader that it was going to open a location at 1249 N. Loop West, near Telemundo. At the time they said that they’d open in July. They didn’t quite make it but from the looks of things, it’s opening soon. They’re advertising for employees on their jobs page and signage is up. It will be the second Chipotle location in The Leader area. The first location was built at 207 Heights Blvd. in Washington Heights. The El Cantina Superior closes temporarily for gas leak People heading to The El this weekend for some Tex Mex found a sign on the door saying they were closed. On Facebook, they tell patrons that they’ve identified a gas leak and are taking steps to have it fixed: “We don’t feel comfortable operating the kitchen until this is resolved. We appreciate your patience while we deal with this issue. We’ll have daily updates on our progress.” Say it ain’t so Pierson & Co BBQ Thanks to Leader reader Marilyn Klevar who did the leg work to find out what was going on with Pierson & Co BBQ, 5110 T C Jester Blvd. She said she drove by and there were high weeds and a commercial

property lease/sale sign up. “I read in the November Leader about Pierson & Co. The article also mentioned the owner had double knee-replacement surgery. Hope the Pierson family is okay.” The number for Pierson is no longer in service and Yelp reports it closed. The establishment got rave reviews and it’s a definite loss for the neighborhood. The Leader hopes all is well with the Pierson family too. Lillo & Ella is hot, hot, hot At least that’s the consensus of Zagat who just named Lillo & Ella at 2307 Ella Blvd. one of Houston’s hottest restaurants. As for why? Chef and owner Kevin Naderi, also of Roost, gives us reasonably priced Pan-Asian dishes in street-food style.” Zagat’s don’t miss is the spicy Thai muu noodles, thin noodles tossed with ground pork, long beans and bean sprouts. What’s yours? Who’s up for brunch? Houston Restaurant Weeks is still in full swing and CultureMap gives a run-down of don’t miss spots for brunch. Rainbow Lodge makes the list from The Leader area due to its tranquil and leisurely experience in a bucolic log cabin. They suggest starting with gazpacho, crab cakes or a classic Caesar salad. Save some stomach room for the buffalo Benedict with non-traditional meats.

St. Pius X launches new website By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com

Faculty, students and parents at St. Pius X High School will be able to interact in new, digital ways thanks to a revamped website set to launch this week. The new, online classroomfocus will offer parents and students a chance to track tests, homework, grades and extracurricular activities via the new web portal, director of communications Deanna Werner said. Parents can communicate directly with

teachers, and the new site also features improved integration with the school’s social media accounts. One of the biggest reasons for the revamp was the age of the previous website, Werner said. “Our current site was about five years old,” Werner said. “We especially want our parents to have the ability to stay more informed and connected to our teachers.” Both parents and students can still choose to communicate through typical channels,

such as email, but the new website offers a more “direct” route, Werner said. The new site also provides updated features like text alerts. “If a student is in band, athletics or other extra-curricular activities, students and their parents can sign up to receive reminders sent straight to their phone to remind them when big events or other things are going on,” Werner said. The new website is a culmination of nearly a year’s worth of gathering feedback

and development, Werner said. At the start of the previous school year, officials passed out questionnaires to students, faculty and their parents regarding what they would most like to see added or changed to the website. “We basically worked on it for the entire school year,” Werner said. “We’re excited to finally be rolling it out and we think everyone will be pleased with it.” St. Pius X High School’s website can be found at www. stpiusx.org.

Education changes lives for the better For The Leader “Education — in the form of school — has to have community support in order to thrive,” proclaims Paolo Castagnoli, the new Principal at Frank Black Middle School in the Oak Forest. He was recently on “Make It Happen with David Lorms.” Castagnoli came to head up Frank Black after a long and interesting Tour of Houston Education. Coming from a mostly musical family, he began at North Texas University studying Music Education, but transferred to University of Houston to study Political Science after getting married. While planning to go to graduate school, bilingual Castagnoli took a “day job” teaching at a Houston charter school that predominantly served Hispanic at-risk students. His experience there led to joining “Yes Prep” which prepares low-income students for college. “My time at ‘Yes Prep’ taught me that if you put the right ingredients together and give kids something to grab on to, you can make great things happen for them” Castagnoli says. He is right. Seventeen students from that first graduating class went on to attend Ivy League Universities! During his tenure at the school it was rated as one of the Top High Schools in the state of

Texas. “I also learned that the Classroom Teacher has the toughest job,” says Castagnoli. Next came a teaching and then an Assistant Principal position at Scarborough High School. Then on to East Early College High School, a partner to Houston Community College. There students can earn an Associate Degree during their high school years. “It was great to see these bright, hardworking kids be able to step into college as a Junior!” exclaims Castagnoli. That led him to his current post at Frank Black. “I have lived in Forest Oak for 15 years, so when this position became available, I was very interested. After interviewing with the staff, I became excited about the opportunity to be the Principal at this school!” says Castagnoli. An Academic Vanguard Magnet school, Frank Black has funds that are available for the gifted and talented. “We focus on the whole child experience, the whole child education” says Castagnoli. “We are looking to build a well rounded school.” He has plans to start Creative Writing, Public Speaking and Debate classes as electives. Supporting sports and band programs as well as adding technology are some of his high priorities.

Before he dedicated his life to educating Houston youth, Castagnoli was a professional musician, playing with the award-winning American and Latin Pop singer Vikki Carr. In fact, he met his wife while playing in his band “Beat Temple” in Houston. The couple, both educators, have been married for 21 years and have a son and a daughter. Castagnoli plans to continue and build community support for Frank Black Middle School, which includes a fund raising campaign for a new fence. Monetary donations are always welcome, and community members may donate their time to help with gardening or painting if that is a better fit for them. Be sure to like the “Friends of Frank Black” facebook page, www.facebook.com/FrankBlackMiddleSchool.

I would like to take the time to introduce myself to you. My name is Dr. Esther Kovacs and I recently purchased the practice from Dr. Deborah Thomas. I am a graduate of the University of Houston’s College of Optometry where I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Thomas as she was my attending doctor in clinic. Since graduating over 7 years ago, I have had the opportunity to see a wide range of ocular diseases and co-management of pre and post-op cataract and Lasik patients. The practice has gone through a few changes, but you will still see the great staff that has served you in the past. I look forward to meeting you and continuing your care at Today’s Vision Oak Forest.

This is by far, the best choice of hair stylist I’ve ever made.

BACK TO SCHOOL The Parent-Teacher Connection By Emily Clay For The Leader

Teachers are tasked with the near impossible feat of making every subject palatable and accessible to thirty-plus students at a time, 180 days out of the year. While they really are trying to spice up topics like adding fractions, they realize that each of their students has a unique learning style. Many have learning disabilities—diagnosed or undiagnosed. Some kids are gifted and bored to tears, while others missed something years before and are now so far behind they feel like they can never learn. There are students with social struggles (like anxiety), and a handful who can’t focus because they are struggling with a difficult life at home. I know this because I am a teacher. Like most of my colleagues, I spent countless hours off-the-clock and many of my own hard-earned dollars inventing ways to reach these little micro-populations within my classes. The truth is that creating a single lesson that imparted each student with complete understanding of what I needed to teach, was as improbable as pinning a wave to the shore. That doesn’t mean we teachers stop trying, but

in a traditional classroom, the goal is to impact the majority of the kids, and inevitably, someone is getting left behind. While grant monies and school district assistance programs were heavily implemented at the school where I taught, the single most influential factor that helped the most students was positive (but not overbearing!) parental involvement. I had about 150 students per year, so when a parent reached out to me in August with a phone call, e-mail, or came up to talk to me in person for just five minutes, their child was immediately moved to the top of my mental list of ones to watch. These parents let me know things that helped and hindered their children in prior school years, and already I could begin using this knowledge to shape my instruction. Having a partnership with the parent made it easy for me to alert them immediately when I saw a warning flag. It made it all the sweeter to send home a note with an excited success story. When I had to have a call about a behavior struggle, knowing I would be able to talk to the parent as a team mate to find a way to make things better, rather than having to face angry accusations, made my job easier, and their children more successful in my class-

room. These parents also understood that all education does not occur in the classroom and that they ultimately bore the responsibility for making sure their kids were respectful, honest, and hard working. No matter where your child goes to school, you are his advocate. For a child who struggles in school for behavioral or academic reasons, establishing a positive working relationship with his teachers goes a long way toward making sure he doesn’t fade into the background or go overlooked. When you’re reaching out to your child’s teacher, remember that she is extraordinarily busy, and thinking of her students all the time. Please be respectful of her time, but do make a gesture to let her know you want to work with her, that you will follow through at home, and that you always welcome communication. I suggest a kind note, stapled to a Target gift card. Emily Clay is the Owner/Administrator at eLearingk12.com, located at 7035 W. Tidwell Rd., Bldg. J, Ste. 104. For more information, plan to attend their Open House on Tuesday, August 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

How to help kids transition back to class The dawn of a new school year is an exciting time. Kids may not want to say goodbye to days spent lounging by the pool, but such disappointment is often tempered by the prospect of returning to school with friends. For parents, getting kids ready for a new school year is about more than updating their wardrobe or organizing carpools with fellow parents. Re-acclimating kids to the routine of school after a relaxing summer is a significant undertaking, and the following are a handful of ways for parents to get a head start as the school year draws closer. • Establish a routine over the last few weeks of summer. Summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and that lack of structure can help kids unwind and make

the most of the freedom that summer vacation provides. But as summer starts to wind down, parents can begin to reintroduce some structure into their kids’ lives to make the transition back to school go more smoothly. Plan morning activities so kids can readjust to waking up early each day. • Take kids along when shopping for school supplies. If you plan to buy your child a new computer or other supplies for the upcoming school year, take him or her along on your shopping trips. Kids who get to choose their supplies might be more excited about returning to school than those youngsters who are given what they need without offering their input. • Encourage kids to sign up for extracurricular activities. Many school-aged athletes get a

head start on the new school year by trying out for sports teams. Such tryouts often commence a week or two before a school year is scheduled to begin, and this can help kids ease their way back into the school year. But even non-athletes can begin pursuing extracurricular activities before the first school bell of the year rings. Theater programs may begin auditions or encourage interested youngsters to attend orientation meetings before the dawn of the school year, and such sessions can be a great and pressurefree way for kids to ready themselves for a new school year. The arrival of a new school year can be both exciting and daunting. But parents can help their youngsters readjust to school in various ways after a relaxing summer.

How to help distracted students Today’s students have more gadgets at their disposal than ever before. As technology like tablets and smartphones have become more prevalent in the lives of adults, such devices also have become more commonplace in the classroom. Some kids thrive when teachers utilize technology to enhance lesson plans, while others may be distracted by access to technology. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is one of the most common childhood disorders. ADHD can make it difficult for kids to maintain focus in the classroom, and that focus may be enhanced or further compromised by technology that’s capable of serving many different functions. Kids who use the technology to their advantage may find it improves their ability to grasp lessons, but some kids may be distracted by devices or even other items in the classroom that make it difficult for them to absorb lessons. Parents concerned about their kids’ ability to cope with distractions in the classroom and at home can take the following steps in an effort to help youngsters improve their academic performance. * Speak to your child’s teacher about seating assignments. Students who find it difficult to focus in the classroom may benefit from new

seating assignments. Windows or high-traffic areas of the classroom, such as doorways, can compromise a student’s ability to focus. In addition, the back of the classroom is not the ideal spot for youngsters who find it difficult to focus on the teacher. * Encourage participation. Many teachers recognize the value of active participation in the classroom, but kids who are struggling to focus may shy away from participating because they are worried about embarrassing themselves in front of their classmates. Parents and teachers can work with students to encourage them to participate, reassuring them that they don’t need to be experts on a given subject to contribute to lessons. * Minimize distractions at home. Kids who have no trouble focusing in the classroom may find it’s a whole different ballgame when they arrive home to study or do their homework. Mom and Dad no doubt have their own gadgets around the house, and such devices as well as television may be too difficult for youngsters to ignore. At home, parents can create a safe haven from distraction by designating a room or area of the house for schoolwork. Such areas should be clear of distractions like television, telephones, video game consoles, and other gadgets that can compromise a student’s focus.

How to make school lunch healthier

The benefits of a healthy diet are clear and well documented. In addition to providing the nutrients a growing body needs, consuming a balanced diet helps children maintain a healthy weight. Obesity continues to be a growing problem among school-aged children and can contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and many other adverse medical conditions. Children attending school will eat at least one meal away from home each day. A healthy lunch provides sound nutrition to give students energy to do well in school and for the rest of the day. Children who do not eat well at lunch may have difficulty concentrating, while others may feel sluggish or tired. As part of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, the United States National School Lunch Program was revised to guarantee healthy, nutritionally sound choices, as established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for lunch. America’s school menus were altered to be healthier than ever, including more fruits and vegetables while limiting calories. Despite some controversy through the years, including some students saying the smaller portions and food choices aren’t always satisfying, states suffering from high child obesity rates have seen marked improvements. Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offering and better nutrition. Here are some guidelines to follow. • Offer nutrient-dense foods. Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, that will give children the nutrients they need. Nutrient-dense foods also help kids feel fuller, longer. • Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that do not get their fat from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Saturated fats can lead to obesity and clogged arteries. • Let kids choose some of their food. Allow kids to pick some of the healthy foods they will be eating. Giving kids a say in their diets will make them more likely to enjoy their lunches and cut back on snack foods. • Make small changes that add up. Switching from white bread to whole grain breads, and opting for low-fat dairy products instead of full-fat dairy products can make a world of difference. Kids may not notice a change in texture or flavor, and many of kids’ favorite foods, such as chicken nuggets, pizza and macaroni and cheese, can be made with healthier ingredients. • Remember, beverages count, too. Giving children a healthy lunch and then packing a sugar-filled, high-calorie drink negates your efforts. Calories from beverages can quickly add up. ELECTRICAL SERVICES

100 Years Young!

August 14th, 2014 "Now I'm Twenty-One" A poem by Dorothy J. Adams This is my day I proudly say For I have now reached twenty-one I feel quite old, as years unfold, But then, I guess life’s just begun. When I was small; not near so tall, And my years were few in number, ‘Twas then I’d wait to celebrate Anxiously, this day of summer. But now I wish the years to push Backward, as time rolls quickly by, But I’ll stay young, is the song I’ve sung, Until God takes my soul on high.

With love and affection, Your family and friends at Adams Insurance Service Dorothy Adams, wife of Maurice Griffin Adams, and mother to Norman E. Adams worked at Adams Insurance from 1947 to 2004. She currently resides in Garden Oaks.

BACK TO SCHOOL Reassessing the Learning Environment for your child By Emily Clay For The Leader

Does the school fit your child? Children innately love to learn. It’s why somewhere around age 3, a pre-schooler’s favorite expression is “Why?” You’d be hard pressed to find a first grader who doesn’t love immersing herself in a factual book about dinosaurs or isn’t fascinated by a trip to the zoo. Playing and learning go hand in hand. But somewhere along the way, waking the kids for school becomes a chore. It’s hard to listen to your second grader lamenting classroom boredom every single day. If we think back, we can probably remember the age when it happened to us—when school stopped feeling like an exciting mental playground and more like a mindless nine-to-five (or, 8-to-3:30). For me, it was third grade. Something about the bland textbook rundown on the Iroquois left me counting the seconds until the bell rang, and soon every subject followed suit. Being bored is a part of life. As my father wisely told me at some point in college, “If you find a job you love to do 100% of the time, it’s probably illegal.” Learning to successfully complete tasks you don’t feel like doing in a timely manner is an essential life skill. Otherwise, I would never balance my checkbook or file my tax returns, and then where would I be? However, it is important to discern whether your child is suffering from true boredom or academic distress. Often they present the same way: a disinterest in school; saying subjects are “dumb”; hating certain subjects; acting out in the classroom; slumping grades; giving up; anxiety; withdrawing socially and even around the family.

When these signals are overwhelmingly present, it’s a good idea to closely assess if the school fits your child. While many kids perform well in a traditional classroom environment, a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work for every student. Some students have undetected issues with social or academic anxiety that can be exacerbated in a large classroom or the heavy emphasis on test scores. Sometimes allowing your child to move at her own pace in a more intimate learning environment can alleviate these symptoms. Know your options. Look around at the public school, charter school, Montessori school, private school, specialty schools, and homeschool options in our area (there are more than you think). Many boast much smaller studentteacher ratios, and some allow self-pacing. Your family may even benefit from a

homeschool/in-school hybrid program, which would allow you, the parent, to guide the educational process while still providing your child ample opportunities to work with outside teachers and interaction with other kids in a school setting. If you like your school, make a meaningful connection with the teachers and see if there are ways the process can be improved to benefit your kids. Though your child may spend most of his time in someone else’s care, you are his ultimate advocate, and you should always feel in control of his educational process. Emily Clay is the Owner/ Administrator at eLearingk12. com, located at 7035 W. Tidwell Rd., Bldg. J, Ste. 104. For more information, plan to attend their Open House on Tuesday, August 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
