By Christina Martinez Christina@theleadernews.com If you walk into Head Coach Stephen Dixon’s office, you’ll find a district championship trophy proudly displayed on his desk. After Reagan was redistricted to 6A, there was talk about Reagan losing their dominance in 5A, but Coach Dixon doesn’t agree there. What he does believe is that the best programs play in 6A and he and his team are embracing the moment. The Reagan Bulldogs finished 6-5 overall and 5-2 in district, with Lamar and Bellaire dominating the big two spots. “I thought we did pretty good for our first year in 6A,” Coach Dixon said. “We ended up third place last year, right behind Lamar and Bellaire. We were able to kind of overtake Westside and secure premises around those elite two. Although Westside was in that elite three range.”

This year Reagan will probably be picked around that same area and Coach Dixon says rightfully so. “I think Lamar and Bellaire have accomplished a lot, but I think we’ll definitely chase those teams, along with Westside and Chavez.” Comradery, consistency and depth are what Coach Dixon

By Christina Martinez Christina@theleadernews.com The question on everyone’s mind this year, and for the past few seasons, will Scarborough break the streak this year? Brand new to the team is Head Coach Keith Alex and he has a bold answer to that question – absolutely. Scarborough has been a winless program since 2009. After the district’s realignment, Scarborough was guaranteed a trip to the playoffs and took their first playoff trip last year facing West Orange-Stark in the first round. West OrangeStark 64, Scarborough 0. Most will see the final score of the Spartan’s first appearance to the playoffs as a loss, but there’s so much more. After the 2014-2015 season, Head Coach Ajani Sander

Waltrip rams Team pushes for district hunt after learning season Last season was a building season for the Waltrip Rams, with a brand new head coach, redistricting shifting the Rams to 5A and the late Coach Milton Dailey weighing on many hearts. The Rams faced trials before the season began, but finished with their sixth consecutive playoff appearance.
Photo by Christina Martinez High knee and ball carrying drills during Monday practice.
The Rams started their season last year not knowing who was going to start at quarterback, who was at running back and who should kick the ball. Now with a year under their belts and an off season, Coach Wright says the fact that his players are a little stronger, faster and not having to “reinvent the wheel” has them up a leg already. “Last year was experience,” Head Coach Todd Wright said. “We lost good kids from last year, but our players know what to do this year. They know where to lineup, they know what’s expected.” This year, Coach Wright doesn’t have to reinvent with the return of solid players, like, Brantley Williams, who will lead the Rams at quarterback. “This year, tryouts are already over and now the kids can focus on their positions,” Coach Wright said. “Hopefully that makes us a little smarter. Brantley Williams is starting at quarterback and it’ll be his first true start. Hopefully he handles the life of a varsity quarterback early and gets his jitters out. He played a lot last year, so I think he’ll be fine.” Even with numbers up this year, Coach Wright says the Rams need to work on depth. The Rams graduated a couple of big impact lineman, but Wright believes where this year’s linemen lack in depth, they make up for in athleticism. When it comes to goals for the year, Wright hopes to be stronger and more athletic on the line and skilled on the receiver side to move into new and different formations. “Because we’re smarter, we don’t just lineup and do one thing and that’s all that everybody knows,” Coach Wright
said. “Now we can add a couple wrinkles that we couldn’t last year.” Last year, the Rams first faced the suburban team, Waller, to start the season and in that game had 10 false starts. The fault of those errors isn’t placed on any one shoulders, but Wright says “no one quite
Coach Wright was asked to pick one player for everyone to watch this season and his choice is Senior Safey, Mondre Causey. knew the snap count.” Facing Waller again at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Aug. 27, eliminating small mistakes like false starts is what Coach Wright says will be the key to their success. Looking down the road, Coach Wright wants another run at playoffs. “Our big thing now is making a push to win that first playoff game,” Coach Wright said. “We want to compete for a district championship.” Last year Coach Wright said they surprised themselves when competing with the big teams. This year, surprises aside, Coach Wright says solid football can carry them to be in the hunt for district.

Photo by Jonathan Garris It might be a tough road ahead for the Lutheran North High School Lions football team, but players and coaches are excited to make their mark in the uopcoming season.
By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com Going an entire season without a win can be a tough pill to swallow, but Lutheran North High School coach Nathan Robbins says his team is more than up to the task to continue their rebuilding process as the Lions look to notch a few wins this season. “I know we’re going to be more competitive,” Robbins said. “How competitive within a given game with a given opponent will be dictated as we go.” Part of that is because the team is so young. The school only has one senior on the team this year, so one of the challenges will be providing a sense of urgency to the team. However, that sense of urgency might already be enhanced by the previous year’s winless season, including a 72-7 loss against The Woodlands Christian Academy. Having a lot of young members on the line of scrimmage will offer Robbins a chance to grow his team for the future, and off-season training is already beginning to show positive changes on the Lions. Last year’s approach allowed an average of 4.7 pounds gained in weight per athlete, dedicating three days of the week to weight lifting and the same will be done for this year. “We’re much faster than we were last year,” Robbins said. “It’s not a here-and-now approach to football but it’s definitely an approach to building the future.” Robbins acknowledges that “potential” will get teams no wins, but video reviews and a stronger offseason approach has shown improvements in the team underlying last season. Robbins also grew his staff and visited with other coaching staffs in other Texas football programs. The Lions hope to get off to a positive start in their first game against Sabine Pass at home Sept. 4. One of the big questions will be the “eagerness to be physical,” something which Robbins said there is plenty of room to grow. Building confidence, mentally and physically, will be one of the biggest challenges in growing the team during the season. “How to do that is a big question,” Robbins said. “How do you make a youngster confident enough to hit another person? I think you have to provide them opportunities to be successful as if they have a positive consequence, like a successful tackle or a big hit, they’re more likely to repeat

“Once we were in the game we realized we actually had a shot but we realized we blew it in the first and second quarter by coming in intimidated.”

Admission Event Dates it.” Robbins also said this year’s Lions team is one of the most prepared group of athletes, particularly when compared to other seasons. While not “great” in many approaches, Robbins admits, improving commitment and the buy-in from family support and community has been instrumental in molding the team for the upcoming season. Drew Rebeau transferred from Kingwood High School this year and also wants to make a positive impact for
younger players and will be looking to improve his footwork. “I just want to be able to give everyone on the team the best support I can,” Rebeau said. “I’m not as accurate as I could be but I’ll be working at it a lot.” Rebeau also says the Lions need to break through their defeatist mindset that can hold teams back. “A lot of kids at my old school decided they were going to lose the game before it even started,” Rebeau said.

St. Pius X Panthers By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com The St. Pius X High School Panthers know they’re underdogs in their district. Coach Stephen Hill knows the school plays one of the toughest schedules in the state for a private school – playing All Saints High School, followed by Sealy High School and later El Campo and Stafford High Schools – but he and his players are looking forward do it. “For me, this year, I’m not worried about the win-loss record, Hill said. “I want to make a run in playoffs and put us back on the map. Coach Stephen Hill worked to increase his staff size with some part-time assistants, comprised of teachers and figures both inside and outside of the school. Hill said the expectation last year from administrators was admittedly to split the season 5-5 but last year’s playoff appearance has those expectations heightened. Meeting that will require a swift start to the season, as the school faces All Saints High School from Fort Worth, TX on Saturday at University of Houston’s TCDECU Stadium, as the Panthers look to hold on to the ground gained in the 2014-15 season. The game versus All Saints last season was particularly important as the Panthers handed the school its first regular season loss in two years. “All Saints is one of the cream of the crop private schools in the Dallas area, Hill said. “This will be good, healthy competition and will allow us to know where we are as a team. To get to play them at [University of Houston’s] stadium will be great. Moving on from last year’s tough playoff loss against Bishop Lynch by a score of 3026 will also be key to a deep playoff run. “We’ve kind of had a history of being one and done in the playoffs so what we want to do this year more than anything is have a good, solid regular season, Hill said. “More importantly, when we get to the post season, we need to make sure we make a good long run. The key to a playoff run this year will be staying healthy. Hill said by the end of last season, the Panthers suffered a few injuries to key players which hampered the team’s

run. Depth could present a challenge to SPX, as Hill pointed out the team only has a short amount of offensive and defensive lineman and, should one go down, would put the team in a bind. “The problem with us is we don’t have anybody that goes
two ways, Hill said. “Everyone is a one-way starter. Some key starters, linebackers, safeties and players like Micah Massie were lost but Hill said this year’s team is one of the fastest he has ever coached in terms of understanding fundamentals and
raw physicality. “Having some guys returning and not installing a new system has been key for us, Hill said. In the offseason, Hill said

the Panthers held a “BiggerFaster-Stronger” camp during the summer, focusing on normal conditioning like weights and running but also on building team camaradarie. Quarterback Clay Roberts is looking to start the season off on the right foot as well. The
senior said leadership across the board has improved, particularly for younger players. “I feel like our team chemistry is a lot higher this year than last year,” Roberts said. “Last year it was [Hill’s] first year here so we kind of gelled over this summer and got to really
know and understand one another.” Hill also recognizes the challenge with playing against St. Thomas High School Eagles right down the road, which he called the “top of the food chain,” in regards to competitiveness. Hill said his team will
be aiming for the Eagles this year in particular. “We’re tired of hitting each other,” Hill says with a smile. “We’re ready to strap everything on and go after someone else.”

Maintaining continuity will be the biggest focus of the St. Thomas High School Eagles for the upcoming season, coach Tim Fitzpatrick said. With opening games against Kinkaid, Strake Jesuit and Santa Fe, Fitzpatrick knows that keeping up the winning habits from last year will be important, following up on the Eagles 11-2 record. “The biggest change this year will be our depth,” Fitzpatrick said. “We’re starting to get some quality depth where if a number two guy comes in there’s no decrease in productivity or talent level. Before we had a pretty good first team but then if someone left the field and another guy came in he might not know exactly what he’s supposed to do.” Practices will be spent emphasizing playing on “both sides of the ball,” Fitzpatrick said, which is something that will help the program in the long run. The team has a large number of starters returning and he said the team will have to shed some of its youth. “We’re going to have to lose that ‘we’re young’ moniker because we’re not,” Fitzpatrick said. “A lot of veteran players are coming back who have played with big games and what we’re preaching to them is let’s get better.” Fitzpatrick wasn’t pleased with some of the close games during last season, and said some of them came down

to poor execution. Finishing games with full effort will be key to the team as it looks to make another playoff run and perhaps earn a title. In dealing with the offseason, little has changed in regards to conditioning but Fitzpatrick maintains that if a system isn’t broken it shouldn’t be fixed. Developing a routine is as important to the senior players as it is for the rising freshmen students. “We’ve built a program with a good solid group of freshman that are going to be really good players and it’s really fun to coach them,” Fitzpatrick

St. Thomas from P. 6B Lorenzo Neal among others will help give the team an edge this season. “There are some other guys that started in offense that we might put on defense in certain situations when personnel matchups dictate and they understand that,” Fitzpatrick said. While it may sound redundant, the seniority of the older students in general offers the Eagles a proven and dangerous tool set on the field. For many of the seniors, their freshman year was the first year STH had one freshman team. “We’ve had them for four years – they know the system, especially defensively – and they’re smart kids and we expect them to execute at a high level,” Fitzpatrick said. “We’re going to take what the defense gives us offensively and, overall, it’s a chess match and we hope to be putting others in check mate quite a bit.” Like others, Fitzpatrick maintains that the first game against Kinkaid will be the most important in terms of setting the tone and precedent for the rest of the season. The Eagles are also looking forward to rematch against Angleton, who handed STH their lone regular season loss last season. “We really want to focus on playing like our hair’s on fire,”

e all know the stories of the impact breast cancer has had on millions and millions of people every year, and we all know someone who has suffered through this disease. However, we also know there are strides made every year to beat this illness, and we know there are stories of survival that both encourage and fortify our resolve.
Because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to tell the stories of people in our community who have fought the disease and proudly call themselves survivors today. We also want to explain to our readers about the advances in treatment of breast cancer and how those options are available right here in our area.

Coach Dixon was asked to pick one player for everyone to watch this season and his choice is Senior Quarterback Robert Revels III, University of Tulsa Commit. says he and his team needed to pull over the elite two. In long, athletic games, the Bulldogs were able to keep up, but Coach Dixon says their depth eventually overwhelmed his players. “[Bellaire], we were a little closer to them last year, and the last game told that,” Coach Dixon said. “They ended up beating us 35-28. We had a chance to win it there at the end, but I think overall depth and quality of depth is key for us this year.” Depth on the line will also be crucial to depth for the Bulldogs this year. Most of the experience this year is on the offensive side and four new players on the defensive side. “Defense we’re starting brand new,” Coach Dixon said. “We’ve got four guys who are new at the position. Although they are talented, they are new and inexperienced. Those are positions that we are really focusing on to get to that level of Lamar and Bellaire.” This year, the Bulldogs look to have a better start to the season, with a solid line on offense and a returning quarterback that Coach Dixon says has known the offense since middle school. “Defense will always be a staple at Reagan,” Coach Dixon said. “We have four of those guys over there with college offers. That’s always where we’re going to be strong at.” This Friday, the Reagan Bulldogs take on Humble at 7 p.m. at Delmar stadium. The Bulldogs fell to the Humble last year in a close battle and Coach Dixon expects nothing less this year. “It’s going to be a tough battle, but I think we can get them,” Coach Dixon said. “I’m sure they’re thinking the same thing, but I think we can get them.
Coach Alex was asked to pick one player for everyone to watch this season and his choice is Senior Quarterback Titus Randal. “They played a little more competitive last year than previously,” Coach Alex said. “My goal this year is to help us get to that next level and gain success on the field.” Last year was one of the most competitive seasons for the Spartans yet. The year before, the Spartans had gone scoreless for many games, even seasons, and this past year the Spartans had their highest scoring season. Photo by Christina Martinez The Spartans scrimmaged Punt return drills from Monday Sam Houston two weeks be- practice. fore the season started and the Spartans scored two touchdowns and forced two fumbles, ending in the Spartan’s favor. “That was a big victory for us,” Coach Alex said. “It showed that their hard work pays off and as we continue that mindset, we’ll have some victories this year.” Every day, Coach Alex says he crosses 4141 Costa Rica with the mindset that he and his team are going to put in the work and be victorious this year. In order to reach that victory, Coach Alex has three ingredients to success – discipline, commitment and always doing the right thing.

booster seats for kids 4 to 8 years old. This is also a good season in which to remember that it is against Texas law to leave a child under 7 years old alone in a vehicle longer than 5 minutes – no matter how hot or cold the outside temperature. With school back in session, we teach our children to be safe in that environment. But “school safety” is also the responsibility of adult drivers -parents and non-parents alike. For instance, drivers have the common-sense responsibility to refrain from using a cell phone in a moving vehicle in a school zone -- unless it’s an emergency or the driver uses a hands-free device. In fact the Texas Legislature outlawed such irresponsible behavior. Drivers can face a heavy traffic fine for a violation. Why? Because, as we know, cell phone use can be a distraction for a driver in any situation, and around schools it’s as important as ever that drivers be alert to the presence of children on sidewalks, in crosswalks and elsewhere. In fact, drivers under 18 years old or who’ve had a learner’s permit for six months or less are banned from using cell phones in all driving situations. Obviously, a school zone is the place to sloooow down. That’s as easy as, well, ABC. Crossing guards deserve our cooperation – and our respect and thanks. School zones throughout Precinct 1 are marked very well with special speed limit signs. In the city of Houston, speeding in a school zone can trigger a driver’s speedy trip to a $215 ticket for exceeding the limit by 1 to 5 mph, all the way up to $350 for exceeding it by 30 mph. Most drivers know to halt when a stopped school bus nearby activates a visual signal such as flashing red lights. But many may not know that passing a stopped school bus that is loading or unloading students can result in a fine up to $1,250! According to state government, at least 40,000 school buses carry 1.5 million children in Texas every day. That’s a lot of opportunities for drivers to exercise care. Of course, many families take kids to and from school in private vehicles. And those vehicles should include properly installed and functioning

By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader Braun Enterprises is aiming to turn an unused shopping center into a stylish, 23,000 square foot hub with locally owned businesses, from a coffee and breakfast restaurant to a hip new salon. The shopping center, located at 4721 North Main St. near Airling Drive, will feature David Buehrer and Ecky Prabanto’s new coffee, breakfast and lunch spot. The coffee shop, called Morningstar, comes on the heels of the partners’ success with Greenway Coffee in the Upper Kirby District, followed by their partnership with the Clumsy Butcher Group at Blacksmith in Montrose. In addition to Buehrer and Prabanto, Priscilla Nguyen will manage the menu and kitchen. Nguyen has won many fans in the same role at Blacksmith. Morningstar is slated to open in the Fall. According to Dan Braun, President of Braun Enterprises, the developers have also signed a lease with a young, Heights entrepreneur who will open a woman’s clothing boutique called Iko Iko. The fashions and accessories offered will be unique, edgy, sometimes playful, and often hand-made or one-of-a-kind. The inventory features local and regional artists and artisans making Iko Iko another destination stop in the new center. The store’s website reports that it will open in September. Chef PJ Stoops has earned many followers through his seafood distribution company, Choam, and his soon-to-be-opened eatery, Foreign Correspondents has continued to generate buzz in the area. Foreign Correspondents is also a part of the Heights-based restaurant management company, Treadsack, whose growing collection of local successes include Down House, D&T Drive Inn, Johnny’s Gold Brick and more. Heights residents Will and Angela Deaton recently signed a 1,200-square-foot lease in the new development and remain excited about the future. The couple will be moving their Lakota Room Salon from a small building on their property on Columbia St., to its new, higher profile location sometime later in the year. The move is in response to a growing client base of local men and women who seek the haircare skills and artistry of the Lakota team. “We moved from Kingwood to the Heights, and had our son here three years ago, Will Deaton said. “We have not regretted the move for one moment. The Heights is a true community. It is a wonderful place to live. Lakota Room Salon will not only feature the style and color skills of its L’Oreal Elite team, but another remarkable element: a large, community table in the center of the shop. “Our clients are our extended family, Deaton said. “We added the table because we want them to feel comfortable sitting and visiting with us. We have found that they enjoy it as much as we do, he concluded. As for an opening date, Deaton explained that they were at the “mercy of the city of Houston and its permitting, but anticipates opening in late fall.
Stop by your Local #1 Provider Contrbuted Photo Will and Angela Deaton will be moving their Lakota Room Salon into the upcoming North Main Street development.
