Building Success: Oak Forest architect follows passion By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Architect and Oak Forest resident Greg Ryden doesn’t have proximity to most of his projects but he can look out his office door and see one of the more recent – the redesign of Houston Fire Station 13 at 2215 W 43rd St. “We’re a couple of weeks away from being finished, said Ryden, who also did the design work on Fire Station 68 at Gessner and Bissonnet. “I love to work on civic projects as they symbolize commitment to the area and neighborhood that they serve as well as positively contributing to the built-environment. Ryden is a graduate of Texas A&M, both for his undergrad degree and his masters in architecture, and was previously employed at Brave Architecture. At Brave, Ryden worked on The Kipling School and the rebuild of Katherine Smith Elementary. He went out on his own in 2013 and worked out of his home before he moved into his new digs in the complex which also houses Hudson Chiropractic Center, the Dean McNeely Salon and the Book Scene in March 2015. Formerly occupied by a pediatrician, the space had been most recently occupied by a photographer and talent agent. “Every room was full of boxes, said Ryden. “I couldn’t see anything. Now the space is freshly painted with new carpet. It is modern and sleek with ergonomic chairs and screen prints of Storm Troopers on the wall. For now, Ryden Architecture is a one man operation, although Ryden utilizes a wide-array of consultants made up of mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers as well as civil and structural engineers as the need arises. Business is good though so he is on the hunt for a new architectural intern. Ryden’s relationship with the General Services Department’s ln-House Renovation Group, which manages the construction of various Houston Fire Department and Houston Police Department facilities, has also led to his involvement with doing some security upgrades at HPD’s Substation at North Montgomery. “We’re working on a security enclosure and taking the bullet proof glazing up to the ceiling, said Ryden. He’s also working on two retail centers – one in Missouri City and one in the Woodlands, both of which are 20,000 square foot retail developments. He has a project too with Mac Haik Ford Houston at their 1-10 location. Ryden still does some residential work as well. He’s got a project on Ella Boulevard and some other houses outside the area.
Photos by Betsy Denson Greg Ryden moved into his new office space on West 43rd in March of this year. Aside from Fire Station 13 (bottom right), Ryden has projects with HPD and Mac Haik Ford. He still does some residential work too. Ryden said that Fire Station 13 is weeks away from completion.

Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital settles into new home By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com It may have taken a long time for the Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital on West 34th Street to find its way into a new home, but employees at the 50-year-old establishment are excited for what the future will bring for the clinic and its clientele. The organization just finished officially moving into the new building which occupies the lot directly behind the former building, which has now been bulldozed and will become a parking lot, Dr. Hallie Ray Moore said. The new building effectively triples the space of the previous facility, offering 6,850 square feet with new and expanded capabilities. “The old building had three exam rooms, Moore said. “This one has five. We also doubled our surgery capabilities and offer a separate isolation ward with its own ventila-

tion system. Another big feature is a new kids playroom, siutated next to the main reception area at the front of the building. The room not only allows youngsters to enjoy a play area and movies, but also provides viewing windows for cats who have been
temporarily boarded at the facility. “The kids playroom has been a big hit but unfortunately some of the kids end up not wanting to leave, Moore said with a laugh. Spaces for dog boarding and isolation wards will also have

Business Briefs Update on Pinemont Pavilion The Pinemont Pavilion office and retail development at 965 Pinemont Road is making progress. As The Leader previously reported, IJ Realty is already doing business in the complex. Signage is up too for the Little Learning Place, Artisana Bread, and Marchese’s Kitchen, which will offer take-out food. Marchese’s Susan Henn said that they were delayed in opening because of permitting issues but that she hopes they’ll be open in about a month. Real estate agent Andre Reed said they’ve recently leased space to some personal trainers and is talking to a few restaurants about remaining space in the building. Reed said he’s also thinking of having a salon at the center and contracting out with independent stylists to work at the location.

who has owned the lot for some time has begun work on a single family home development. Russel Garrison said that the company will build 13 homes on the site which will all be about 2,500 square feet. “Right now we are doing the site work, he said. “We’ll build the six homes on the south side first.

Simple Eats launched in the hood Reader Matt Kelley said that Simple Eats was launched this week by two Candlelight Plaza residents. “We’re a meal delivery service that focuses on organic, healthy, and delicious meals personally delivered to your door, he said. “We came up with the idea after realizing the lack of convenient, healthy (and affordable!) food options for families. See www.gosimpleeats.com for more information.

Because dogs and cats age much faster than people, most are considered seniors after seven years of age. Bringing a pet in once a year is equivalent to a person seeing a doctor every 6 years. A gradual onset of disease can be subclinical and not noticed in a pet that appears normal on the outside. In addition to a comprehensive physical exam and parasite testing, senior pets should also be screened for diabetes, anemia, liver, kidney and many other diseases at least once a year. This testing is now more cost efďƒžcient and has become the standard of care to detect disease early and establish baseline data for your individual pet. Most veterinarians recommend a CBC (complete blood count) and Chemistry Panel. Thyroid testing also is recommended as many dogs become hypothyroid and cats become hyperthyroid as they age. The urinalysis is extremely important in senior pets as many have low grade silent infections & kidney problems. Pets are living longer and healthier than ever before because of this and other recent advances in veterinary medicine. By examining your pet on the outside and now on the inside, your vet can recommend lifestyle changes, diets and or medications that will beneďƒžt you and your pets for years to come.
February of 2014 much was made about the fact that the space previously housed the Houston JazzBallet Company directed by Patsy Swayze. Allen Brothers Statues The statues of the Allen Brothers crafted by local artist Lori Betz are now finished. As The Leader reported, Lynna Kay Shuffield and her supporters led the charge to have the statues made to be erected at the entrance to City Hall, as was intended by the building’s original architect. Right now, the bronze life-size statues are on display at Clayton Library until Oct. 31st. Shuffield says that there will be a reception on Oct. 26th to introduce the

statues to the public attended by the mayor. She hopes the installation will happen in November. Finally a tenant The last space at the development at 1249 West Loop that is home to Chipotle has finally been leased. Hanna Kaplan with Huntington Properties said that 9Round Kickbox Fitness will be the tenant. 9Round touts “a fast, effective full-body workout in 30 minutes.

ing a planning phase that took about two years. Since it was first established in 1964, the Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital has remained at its original building at 2120 W. 34th St. and during those 50 or so years the community has changed dramatically. “The city has grown and the whole community of Oak Forest is still going through changes,” Moore said. “We
still see old houses being torn down for new ones and the new facility will be in line with those modernized changes.” Currently, the establishment offers the same number of staff but Moore did say the group was waiting to see how it grows into its new space and administrators do anticipate some expansion and are already considering expanding some hours. She also empha-
sized that pricing for services has remained the same alongside the quality. Moore also thanked members of the community for their support throughout the construction process, particularly Doyle’s Restaurant and several nearby churches for their understanding with their ongoing parking situation. “A lot of our clients, as well as our neighbors, have

been very gracious during our building process,” Moore said. “We’ve had some challenges with parking but our neighbors have been very helpful during these stressful months.” For more information about the Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital, call 713-682-6351 or visit www.oakforestvetclinic. com.
Ryden from P. 1B “I’m also talking to a church in the area,” said Ryden, who notes that with the amount of commercial work that needs to be done in The Leader area, it would be nice to be involved. He’s signed a three year lease for his office space, and is curious to see how the immediate area develops. “I’d love to see some new development on the 43rd Street commercial corridor.
“We get used to having certain businesses in the area, but how cool would it be to have something like 19th Street or Rice Village with smaller shops, clustered around an open space.” Another dream? “I’d love to do a modern house in the neighborhood,” he said. “I have the sketches ready to go. I’m a big fan of courtyard style residences.”

Football: St. Pius X defeats All Saints Episcopal, 47-46 By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com The St. Pius X High School Panthers had a busy time fending off All Saints Episcopal High School during their season opener at TDECU Stadium last week – something coach Stephen Hill is hoping to avoid in this week’s game against Sealy. Nearly 100 points were scored by both teams combined during the Aug. 29 match, which SPX won by a single point by a score of 4746. The Panthers burst out of the first quarter with a 28-14 lead, however some fumbles at both ends of the field by both teams helped All Saints regain some of their footing and quickly caught up to the Panthers by the end of the third quarter. “It’s week one and we made mistakes we kind of anticipated we would make with having our first scrimmage canceled,” Hill said. “I was still happy with
the guys that they came back and battled as hard as they did in the second half.” Hill said the Panthers had to make do with some smaller injuries and for performing with an incomplete roster. He also offered praise for quarterback Clay Roberts, who threw for 326 yards on 36 attempts throughout the game. Jacob Jefferson and Terrance Franklin also combined for nearly 200 yards with 16 receptions and Roberts himself also put up 44 yards with 10 carries. “Roberts did an excellect job and I’m really happy with the results on the entire team,” Hill said. On Sept. 4, the Panthers will be facing the Sealy High School Tigers, whom also won their season debut against Royal High School, 28-7. Last year, the Tigers finished with a 5-6 overall record and went 4-1 in their district, which includes Navasota, Wheatley and Furr. “We’ll be playing against
a really well-coached, really athletic team with Sealy so we need to get back to the drawing board and fix some things,” Hill said. “Offensively, we can’t shoot ourselves in the foot and we can’t put ourselves in places like second and third and long.” St. Pius X will play Sealy High School 7:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at Sealy High School, located Ad # 36774 at 2372 Championship Dr.

any parents underrate the importance of caring for their children’s baby teeth. After all, they’re going to be lost and replaced soon enough. Often they don’t take their children to see the dentist until the child complains of a toothache. Yet even at this point, it may be possible (and advisable) to save the tooth if it is not too badly decayed. When decay has not destroyed too much of the baby tooth, it is important to try to save it. It is important because it helps the permanent tooth to erupt into the proper space. If the tooth were extracted, the remaining teeth might crowd together to fill the space, and thereby block out the permanent tooth. Your dentist will have to evaluate the situation to see if it is possible to save the tooth. Often with baby teeth, even when the nerve is dead, they can be saved through a relatively simple procedure called a pulpotomy. Prepared as a public service to promote better dental health. From the office of: Chase Baker, D.D.S., 3515 Ella Blvd., 713-682-4406.
