aquatic therapies are available. Rehabilitation specialists work one-onone with each child to incorporate physical balance, gait training, feeding techniques, functional living, integrated play and spasticity management, as appropriate. Keenly aware that pediatric patients have different therapeutic
needs than adults, Adair said the clinic’s programs purposely incorporate play to make therapy fun and keep patients motivated. In addition, the equipment in the pediatric clinic is designed to fit the physical requirements of young patients. See Pediatric rehab P. 2B

A malnourished child is an under-educated child By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader About 14 months ago, The Leader brought you news of a small nonprofit agency doing big things near the corner of Antoine Drive and 34th Street. At the time, the operation was serving 5,000 of Houston’s at-risk children free, healthy, nutritious suppers a day. This year, that number has increased to 10,000 kids a day in Houston alone, and 5,000 more, state-wide. The agency, called Be A Champion Inc., or BAC, continues to rise to the challenge of ending childhood hunger in Texas. It’s a mammoth undertaking involving many people, massive food preparation, refrigeration, delivery, site distribution, and management, but it is essential to the future of our community. “Our most important goal is to offer, healthy, balanced meals to our children through our Champion Fuel
LEADERS IN QUALITY
Program,” said Be a Champion’s Chief Executive Officer and CoFounder, Jaron Barganier. “In addition to being hungry, a large number of our children are not getting sufficient nutrition in their diets. Over time, our kids become malnourished, and that has a negative impact on their ability to learn. A malnourished child, is an under-educated child.” The nonprofit’s founder explained that 80 percent of Houston Independent School District’s children qualify for free or reduced-price breakfasts and lunches. After school, these same kids return to homes where parents are often at work. Hungry, the children make themselves suppers such as freeze-dried soup, microwaved pizza, or walk to a fast food outlet. Their typical supper is highly processed with little nutritional value. That is to say, when they eat at all.

“Our city has a huge, huge problem with homeless cats and dogs,” Cisneros explained. “It is not a matter of rounding them all up and sending them to Colorado, or placing them in shelters for adoption. There are just too many of them. We must stop it where it starts. We must spay and neuter our pets.” While still in the planning stage, Cisneros intends to dedicate the month of February each year to working in concert with many of the public and private shelters and veterinary clinics in the city. All are invited to celebrate and encourage pet adoptions, advance spay and neuter education, step up surgeries and more. She is calling it “Spay and Neuter Awareness Month.” “Right now, the city of Houston’s Bureau of Animal Regulations and Care, or BARC, can spay and neuter

Unless you drive around the area with your eyes closed, you’ve noticed the abundance of loose or homeless cats and dogs on our streets. Worse still, you may have driven past the inevitable companion animal carcass on the median of Ella or Heights Boulevard, TC Jester, or fill-in-the-blank street. Houston City Council member Karla Cisneros has certainly noticed, and she is preparing to do something about it. The councilwoman was elected by District H encompassing a large portion of The Leader’s readership, and is purposing a humane, all-in effort involving the entire city to address Houston’s thousands upon thousands of homeless pets. Cisneros is calling this heroic proposal “The Big Fix.”
