Artisana Bread moves into neighborhood on Pinemont Wakefield Drive bar closes doors, property sold to developer for townhomes By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com

It wasn’t just the beer that was flowing Monday night at the Dutchman, located at 834 Wakefield, before the bar closed its doors after more than 60 years in business – it was the memories. “Each time I tried to start a story with my friends, I’d get all misty-eyed and have to walk away, said Denise Quick on Facebook. “The people, the memories, the sad times of those we lost, the birthdays and celebrations, the years of just going in for a cold one and some alone time. All will be missed. Last night was amazing with the love of friends. One last memory I personally will cherish. No one will cherish the good times as much as Kenny Kearns, aka Kenny Ray, who bought the bar in 1989 with his dad JD. “We bought it when I was 29 and I’m 55 now, he said. “That’s almost half my life. We had a lot of good cookoffs and some really good camaraderie over the years. There were fourth and fifth generation customers who still came in here. Kearns said that the cost of doing business, and taxes, has become more unpredictable and when Red’s sold across the street for $600,000 in May 2014, a sale started looking more and more likely. “Dad’s been wanting to sell it but I fought it, said Kearns. Realtor Stacy Mathews helped Kearns with the sale, as he did for Jackie Roberts with Red’s Bar. “People are getting mad at me for selling all their bars, he jokes. Mathews notes that the area is “prime property and although he declined to name the selling price, he said that they were “pushing the envelope on price. The property, which is 21,658 square feet, was appraised last year

for $444,062. The sale was a non-MLS listing. Mathews said he brought Kearns two buyers and let he and his dad choose. The new owner, Wall Properties is going to build, you guessed it, townhomes. Kearns had hoped to do a lease back and stay open for a couple more months but that didn’t happen, so the Dutchman’s last night was a spur of the moment affair with word spreading on social media. Monday afternoon, Kearns visited with regulars and hoped he wouldn’t run out of beer too early. Ms. Jane, a four year employee at the bar and a long-time patron before that, enjoyed a Coke and chatted with Kearns, along with patrons Sammy Benefiel, Sylvia Martinez and Chuck Lockhart. They wondered aloud where all the signs and bar memorabilia would go and talked about the old-timers, including one who was always a fixture in the corner with his cigar. Kearns told them he’d get

Washington Avenue’s Fire Station 11 closes The former fire station, turned Mediterranean-pizza eatery, Fire Station 11 has shuttered. The closing was sudden and owners gave no sign of a near departure when talking with them in the last two weeks. After a phone call to the provided number from their PR, the landlord confirmed the closing of Fire Station 11 and said a new restaurant would be taking over the space. The

landlord could not disclose the new tenants, but he did say the process was already under way for the 4520 Washington Ave. location.

Woodrow’s Heights gets new face, new name If you’ve ever intended to dine at Woodrow’s Heights, you may have ended up at Little Woodrow’s on Shepherd because the two names are so similar and right across the street from each other. Woodrow’s Heights has undergone renovations since June, including a new name. The new name for Woodrow’s Heights will now be The Durham House and they will reopen on Oct. 6. Building renovations won’t be the only thing new, with the addition of new food and drink menus in the works. Follow them on Facebook (still listed as Woodrow’s Heights) for status updates.

Mike Riojas

from Beaver’s

By Christina Martinez christina@theleadernews.com If you asked Mike Riojas back when he was the host at Logan’s Road House if his future industry career would have led him to meet his girlfriend and future mother of his child, he probably would have thrown a peanut at you and called you crazy. Riojas has made the industry a career, starting in his early Waltrip High School days at Logan’s Road House off of 290, as a host doing to-go orders. “I started at the bottom as a host,” Riojas said. “I eventually started to take tables for waiters when they were lazy and moved up from there.” After Logan’s, Riojas ventured to Saltgrass and eventually started mixing drinks and became a bartender for the steak house on I-10. August 2002 is where Riojas’ industry career pauses, serving the Marines from August 2002 - 2008. “August 19, was the day I finished and it was an amazing day,” Riojas said. “I wanted to grow my hair out, [and have a] big burly beard, and that’s exactly what I did.” When Riojas returned, he traveled across the states to see friends in California and eventually found himself back in Houston, serving at Saltgrass. After Saltgrass, Riojas gained experience at a downtown restaurant before coming to Benjy’s, which in turn led to Beaver’s. “This November marks six years for me at Beaver’s,” Rio-

jas said. “Beaver’s was really ahead of its time then, with classic cocktails, great menu and my girlfriend worked here, at the time, too.” The start at Beaver’s for Riojas was waiting tables, eventually moving his way up the ladder to bartender. Riojas admits that his cocktail knowledge wasn’t really

defined until taking the bartending position and says the classic cocktail, Aviation, is what changed the game for him. “After discovering Aviation, I started going down the list of classics and making them myself,” Riojas said. “I started picking up recipes, reading material and really teaching myself what worked and what I liked.” Two and a half years ago, Riojas worked his way up and was made bar manager and now is just a couple months short of six years with Beaver’s. “Beaver’s is great because it’s so versatile, there’s something here for everyone.” Riojas and his girlfriend are expecting a baby boy come January.

women lock up and walk them to their cars at midnight. It took Walker a while to realize that Kearns was doing it for their protection. He also helped them price their beer because they were novices. Walker spoke of a time when there were quite a few bars in the area – the Beehive and the 34th Street Bar in addition to Red’s, Jim’s and the Dutchman. “It was kind of like a family,” she said. “Everybody worked with everybody else.” Walker also remembers that Kearns was good about putting on benefits for people. “The thing about bar people,” Walker said. “If you’re down on your luck, bar people are going to help you.” The same generosity was true of the gentleman who gave the Dutchman its name in 1948 when he bought it, according to daughter Sharon Haidusek. “My dad was John Benjamin Haidusek but he was called Dutch from the time he was a boy,” she said. Haidusek said her dad never met a stranger. “He gave loans, and gallons of milk because we used to sell it,” she said. Haidusek said the bar had a big walk in refrigerator and her dad always let people put their freshly killed deer in it for weekend storage before they went on Monday to get them dressed. “In the 1950s we had five inches of snow and people lost power. He had them

bring their baby’s milk to put it in the fridge so it wouldn’t spoil,” she said. Haidusek went to St. Rose of Lima for school and took dance lessons from Patsy Swayze. She remembers coming to The Dutchman to play pool and shuffleboard all through elementary school. “Everybody brought their kids,” she said. “It was a family place.”

In 1965 Dutch sold the bar. He died a year later. Haidusek heard about the abrupt closing on social media and came Monday night. She stayed for three hours and reports the Miller Lite was indeed gone by 6:15. “I told Kenny my dad tiled those bathroom floors in 1960 and I wanted a piece of it,” she said. “It’s a part of my history.”

Artisana from P. 1B who also helps out. Baker Valerie Rangel came to Abbouchi via Craig’s List and graduated from the Art Institute Houston with a degree in Baking and Pastry. Geri Terry has a pastry degree from Le Notre Culinary School. Alex Goewey has a BA in fine arts from Texas State and “wants to learn everything about baking bread.” Jessica Russell and Michelle Rangel are out front. “Great staff, I really like each and every one of them,” said Abbouchi. In addition to her confidence in her staff, Abbouchi believes in her product. “The difference between my bread and what one might find at a good supermarket is the time I invest in letting the dough rise,” Abbouchi told The Leader last year. “No preservatives, and no chemicals to speed up the process or to increase shelf life.” She’s already offered patrons her Focaccia bread and later in the week rolled out her Casatiello which is a traditional Italian Easter bread. It’s a butter, egg and milk bread that has salami and cheese in the dough. She also replaces the meat and cheese with fruit and dark Belgian chocolate. Another bread she recommends for parents packing school lunches is the Pain de mie, which is a white French bread that can be thinly sliced. At the present time they don’t have gluten free offerings because for those with celiac disease, Abbouchi says that they can’t guarantee total isolation from gluten in their process. It’s the same with nuts and dairy, although Abbouchi says they make their nut breads last in the lineup.

fitness/Physical activity

This weekend is the 6th annual Houston Vintage Festival and Market starting Friday evening with a preview party, fashion show and shopping from curated vintage vendors, with a peek into Saturdays activities. Houston Vintage is more than fashion and clothing, though that is what founder, Heights resident Dawn Bell’s passion is. Bell, originally from New Orleans, turned her passion for collecting vintage clothing from the 20’s onward into a career as a fashion stylist. She founded a fashion camp that she hosts each summer out of her Heights warehouse, that is a preview into the world of fashion for teens. Houston Vintage though, in my opinion is where she makes her mark. Enthusiasm is contagious, and in just her second year, Diana Candida and Maria Martinez approached Bell and offered to join her. This year, after enthusiastically promoting the event for at least the past three years, Bell invited me to jump in. What an honor! Everything that is vintage or vintage inspired will be at the festival, starting with the location, the 1940 Air Terminal Museum. This was the luxurious building that the City of Houston opened for those that could afford the modern luxury of air travel. It’s an amazing example of architecture from the time, inside and out. They museum has the planes from that era too, like the Lockheed Lodestar. Houston Vintage is an organization that brings together vintage vendors and enthusiasts from Houston and the surrounding areas. It’s an opportunity for all who love and live vintage to exchange ideas, find some amazing treasures, learn through demos, and celebrate all that is vintage throughout the eras. Held at the classic 1940 Air Terminal Museum, the architecture of the original art-deco Houston Municipal Airport building at present-day William P. Hobby Airport, is the perfect backdrop for this two day event. Starting Friday evening, September 18, 7-11 p.m. with a preview party and fashion show held inside the Air Terminal building, patrons are encouraged to wear mid-century Hawaiian attire to coincide with this year’s theme of “Blue Hawaii, the famous Elvis Presley flick from 1961. Continuing Saturday, September 19, 11-7 p.m. the market area is held in the recently restored 1928 Carter Field Airmail Hangar with dozens more vendors offering everything from vintage themed art, jewelery and clothing to beauty products. Entertainment with a vintage theme will be at both locations all weekend. Adding to the nostalgia of the occasion, the 1940 Air Terminal Museum’s restored planes and helicopters will face shoppers from the tarmac outside the open hangar doors. The highlight of Saturday is the Ms. Houston Vintage pageant
