Neighborhood bar, eatery hosts Texas talent Troubadour Tuesdays hosted at Cottonwood By Christina Martinez Christina@theleadernews.com
Cottonwood’s Chief Operating Officer, Jake Rainey, talks music with his daughter often. When a song comes on, he’ll mention to her when and where he was when that specific song created a memory for him. Those types of memories and experiences are exactly what he said he is trying to create for other people with some of the acts that play on the patio at Cottonwood. Since opening in October 2012, Rainey and his team have brought in live talent with a goal to provide the neighborhood with a variety of different acts, focusing on Texas-based bands. “We’ve got everything from Wrenfro, which is a relatively new project from Tony Scalzo of Fastball and Kevin McKinney from Soulhat, to Deadeye - a Grateful Dead cover band - to Hard Luck Revival, an up-and-coming Houston act,” Rainey said. One specific show, held
the second Tuesday of every month, eight months of the year, is Troubadour Tuesdays - a free concert held at Cottonwood that showcases noted Texas talent. The concert series was founded in 2008 by Rick Heysquierdo, host of The Lone Star Jukebox on KPFT 90.1 FM.

The entrance to Cottonwood is off of North Shepherd Drive. An entrance is no longer available off of 34th Street.
“It’s all about supporting locals and getting people to see these musicians,” Rick Heysquierdo said. “Me – I’m a 401 K kind of guy. I can’t do what these musicians do, and I can’t do without them and their music. It’s about giving love to these musicians.” This month, Cottonwood is shaking things up a bit and
hosting a second Troubadour Tuesdays from 5:30–9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27 on the patio. Rainey said the opportunity arose to bring Texas favorite Jesse Dayton, so they’ll be hosting two shows this month and are excited to bring Dayton. The headliner for the show will be Dayton, with Houston’s own Hard Luck Revival, opening for him. Known for his guitar shredding, Dayton has played alongside legends like Waylon Jennings, Ray Price, Johnny Bush, Willie Nelson and Glen Campbell. Dayton formed his own label in 2002, and began his most prolific recording period: five solo records, one duet record, one live record, as well as two soundtrack recordings for rocker/director Rob Zombie. Dayton also has his hands in acting, writing, directing and producing. Opening for the jack-ofall-trades, Hard Luck Revival describes themselves as “a garage country band hailing from Houston, Texas; a mix

of country, rock, Gulf Coast blues, Rockabilly, and a dash of punk.” The Houston natives will go on at 5:30 p.m. When it comes to bringing music and making memories at Cottonwood, Rainey said he and Rick Heysquierdo are
committed to making Troubadour Tuesdays one of the best events in the city. “Rick’s a pretty big character,” Rainey said. “If you haven’t heard his show on KPFT on Saturday mornings, you need to check it out
soon.” Troubadour Tuesdays is free to attend, family friendly - and dog friendly. Find Cottonwood and their concerts on their patio at 3422 N Shepherd Dr. 77018.

And at the following reader-nominated spots, both you and your four-legged companion will find something to love. Cottonwood, 3422 N Shepherd Dr, Houston, TX 77018 Many readers mentioned Cottonwood as a place that’s dog friendly. Manager Dave Minda said that they have water stations and paper bowls placed on the ground so dogs don’t get dehydrated. Dogs are welcome on all uncovered patio areas – Minda says if they need shade there are plenty of umbrellas on the uncovered part. There’s a park next door that’s connected to Cottonwood and Minda says that the extra green space gives dogs a chance to stretch their legs. And if you want to give Rover a birthday party? Minda says they’ve done them before. Henderson Heights Pub, 908 Henderson St, Hous-
