By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com The oldest hospital in the city, and one with a Heights presence, is on the brink of new ownership again. St. Joseph Medical Center parent company IASIS is purportedly closing in on a merger with Steward Health Care which will include every hospital in the system, including SJMC’s operation in the Heights. IASIS and Steward first announced the definitive agreement to merge their operations in May of this year, making Steward the largest private for-profit hospital operator in the United States with 36 hospitals across 10 states. “Our physician-driven accountable care model focused on keeping patients healthy is transforming the health care industry as this transaction demonstrates,” said Dr. Ralph de la Torre, Chairman and CEO of Steward Health Care, in a May release. “Our model shows how the industry can successfully shift toward a more cost-effective local, coordinated approach that puts patients first.” According to a May release, the merger was expected to close in the third calendar quarter of 2017, subject to customary regulatory approvals, terms and conditions. Terms of the transaction have not yet been disclosed. St. Joseph’s has been a constant focus of questions since the closing of the old Heights

St. Joseph sale likely next week

For all the yardage, accolades and recruiting letters he receives, St. Pius X junior quarterback Grant Gunnell has just one goal this year – getting his team past Bishop Dunne and winning a state championship. (Photo by Landan Kuhlmann)

Grant Gunnell, heralded SPX QB, chasing one team goal By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com St. Pius X junior quarterback Grant Gunnell has done just about everything a high school quarterback can do on the gridiron. However, one coveted prize continues to elude him that has his (and SPX’s) sole focus in 2017. As Gunnell jogged out to the field Monday afternoon, helmet in hand, for more battle prep on the way to a (hopeful) state title for Panther country, it was no secret the sting of coming up just shy of the ultimate prize multiple times weighed a bit on the young man’s mind. “I’ve fallen short the last two years to Bishop Dunne, and I kind of have this extra ticked off feeling going into games, knowing it’s likely going to come down to that again,” he said. “As a team, we’re focused on taking things one game at a time.” Opening doors Outside of claiming that elusive title, the 6-foot-6 gunslinger has accomplished just about everything else on the football field during his time at SPX. Thrown into the fire as a freshman in 2015, all he accomplished was completing nearly 66 percent of his throws for more than 1,400 yards and 16 touchdowns compared to just four interceptions. Gunnell followed up that impressive freshman season with a monster sophomore campaign in which he completed exactly 70 percent of his passes for 4,973 yards and 65 touchdowns in leading the Panthers to an undefeated regular season before once again getting bounced by Bishop Dunne. And that campaign in turn brought many callers to the young man’s doorstep. Following his breakout 2016, Gunnell began fielding offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida State, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Arizona State and more — around 30 Division 1 offers in total for the young man rated by Rivals as the 4th-best national pro-style QB recruit (and top Texas pro-style QB recruit) in the Class of 2019. “Seeing [Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher] growing up and hearing all the stories about them, it makes me proud [of the work I’ve put in] and it’s extremely humbling,” Gunnell said Monday.

No better time for a Night Out By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com

Head Coach Stephen Hill has overseen Gunnell’s growth from gangly freshmen into heralded recruit, and was unsurprised by the attitude and leadership his star quarterback has shown that led to college recruiters knocking his door down. “It’s good to see that work and determination pay

An annual tradition aimed at breaking down barriers is right around the corner. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes policecommunity partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, better places to live. National Night Out 2017, is which free and open to the public, will be hosted by the Near Northwest Management District (NNMD) Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the White Oak Bayou Village Shopping Center at 6600 Antoine Dr. “It gives [people] a chance to get together and learn what’s going on around them as well as meet people they would not normally meet,” said Wayne Norden, president of the Near Northwest Management District. Norden cited a study a few years ago in which the office found a recommendation noting there was no concentrated single activity for National Night Out in this part of the city or Near Northwest’s service area that could be counted on every year. As such, Norden and the NNMD, whose event averages several thousand attendees per year, took it upon themselves from that point forward to broaden the existing
