Local entrepreneur Robert Torres opens mosquito prevention franchises For The Leader Mosquito Joe, a leading mosquito control treatment company serving residential and commercial customers nationwide, signed a deal to open its newest location in Houston, which will service the Houston Heights, Memorial Heights, Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, and Northwest Houston areas. Mosquito Joe will open on approximately March 1 with the help of local entrepreneur Robert Torres, who plans to grow the brand in the future. “We’re thrilled to introduce Mosquito Joe to homeowners, business owners and property managers in the Houston area, said Mosquito Joe CEO (aka Head

Joe) Kevin Wilson. “By partnering with Robert, we expect he will spearhead growth of the brand in the area, and continue to promote our brand’s quality services in the community for many years to come. Consumers may call 1-855-275-2563 at any time for information. Mosquito Joe provides mosquito control treatment to residential and commercial customers. Its technicians are trained mosquito control experts dedicated to one thing: getting rid of mosquitoes so you can enjoy being outside again. Outfitted with the latest gear and backed by the coordination of a top-notch support staff, its technicians in the field get the job done swiftly and thoroughly, leaving a noticeable absence of biting insects in their wake. Each Mosquito Joe operation is an independently owned franchise offering customers reliable and effective service from a trusted community member, backed by a national network of technical expertise.

“Mosquito Joe experienced tremendous growth in 2014 by adding 43 new franchisees and enjoyed a system-wide increase of sales by 311 percent, said Robert Torres. “In addition to wanting to join a brand with this type of success and positive momentum, I chose Mosquito Joe because of the earning potential, and the professional executive team in place offering steadfast support to the franchise system. I’m looking forward to bringing this much-needed service and many new jobs to north and northwest Houston areas. Mosquito Joe continues to build a strong reputation amongst its clientele and currently boasts open territories in twenty states. With mosquito populations continuing to wreak havoc in the summertime, coupled with an increase in insect-borne illnesses, Mosquito Joe’s growth proves that it continues to provide a vital service to communities and a premier business option for future franchisees.

Neighborhood bar adds new additions and new hours For The Leader If you’ve driven by Wakefield Crowbar lately, you’re probably wondering what’s going on in the parking lot. It just so happens that there’s another sand volleyball court. Business has been steadily growing, similar to the fast growth of the neighborhood in the past two years. Upon walking in, you’ll notice some great new seasonal beers on tap as well as additions to the liquor and wine selection. It’s hard not to enjoy coming to this neighborhood bar, with its laid back atmosphere, sprawling deck space and dog friend-

ly patio. Volleyball courts and bar additions aren’t where the news stops. The bar has gathered feedback for early weekend breakfast hours and in turn have moved their original time from 9:30 a.m. to now opening at 8 a.m. Chef Victor Garcia will be adding more weekly specials to the menu, and daily specials will soon be added for consistent favorites. Over on the bar side, you can look forward to weekly pint nights with local breweries and wine tastings. On Mondays, Wakefield Crowbar run club starts at 6 p.m. and on Wednesday, Trivia Night starts at 8 p.m. With the volleyball leagues in full force soon, the place is sure to be the neighborhoods hot spot of the spring.

A then and now photo of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church from 1875 to 2015.

For The Leader St. Mark’s United Methodist Church originated in 1875 as the German Emmanuel Methodist Episcopal Church located at the corner of Hamilton and Preston Street. In 1891, the Church moved and was renamed Zion Methodist Episcopal Church. Through a further series of name changes and mergers, the present St. Mark’s was established in 1938. The cornerstone at 600 Pecore in the Woodland Heights, was laid on August 10th, 1939. On February 4th, 1940, the old bell cast in 1892 for Zion Methodist Church, rang out in St. Mark’s tower calling people to the new church’s first service. The phrase cast on the bell in German is: “Come unto me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. St. Mark’s is a dynamic congregation led by the Reverend Emily Chapman. has something to offer everyone. The Children’s Development Center offers child care and pre-school for ages 12 months to 5 years and includes weekly chapel services. There are numerous scouting groups that call St. Mark’s home, including the 90 year old Troop 30 which was established on February 14, 1925. St. Mark’s supports the Heights Interfaith Ministries Food Pantry by volunteering and providing fresh produce grown in its Community Garden. St. Mark’s sponsors a number of missions, including Habitat for Humanity, Joyful Threads, mission trips and mentoring at neighborhood schools. On February 8th at 4 pm, The St. Mark’s Choir will present Sweetheart Serenades with music and desserts. On February 17 at 5:30, St. Mark’s will hold its annual Shrove Tuesday All You Can Eat Pancake Supper. Pat Walker: Life doesn’t get better than this My name is Pat Walker and I have been handling Real Estate in Leader Country for 27 years. I spent many years working for the telephone company and then decided Real Estate is what I wanted to do. I received my first commission check as a realtor with Garden Properties in 1988 for selling a property on Birdsall in the Memorial area and have been staying busy ever since! I have had the pleasure of helping area families with their Real Estate needs for not only one or two, but for three generations! What a pleasure it is! They are not only clients but have become lifelong friends. That’s the best deal there is! I have no plans to retire anytime soon, and am available to all buyers or sellers who need a realtor with a knowledge of the neighborhood. I have that in abundance. There are some homes in the area I have sold three or four times, and one of them even five times! I have been living in the Garden Oaks area for many, many years and have no plans of moving anytime soon. I have two wonderful housemates, Dede and Burt, who keep me extremely busy when I am not helping folks with their Real Estate needs. That’s the three of us enjoying an afternoon out on the patio at home. I have to say I don’t think life gets much better than this! Call me today! Pat Walker 713-412-6682 pat@thepatwalker.com

Memorial Hermann Northwest offers improved heart procedure For The Leader Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital offers an innovative heart procedure, that may be safer and more comfortable for patients, called transradial cardiac catheterization. This new technique allows access to a patient’s heart through the wrist, instead of the groin. Since minimally invasive cardiac catheterization was pioneered in the 1950s, the procedure has traditionally been performed by threading a thin tube through the femoral artery in the groin guided by X-rays toward the heart, using the circulatory system to clear blockages, deliver medication, and place stents. However, numerous studies and clinical trials have proven that using blood vessels through an artery in the wrist, instead of an artery in the leg, offers many advantages.

“Inserting the catheter through the radial artery in the wrist, rather than through the groin, has been shown to markedly reduce major vascular complications, said Imran Dar, M.D., an interventional cardiologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann Northwest. “Patients usually are able to sit up and walk around within two hours or less after the procedure, rather than lying down for many hours which was typical with the traditional method. After the procedure is finished, a temporary deflatable wrist band will be placed over the artery for compression. Typically, this will be removed after one or two hours. “This access point allows for easier compression of a much smaller artery, lending it to safer practices, said Dar. Patients at Memorial Hermann Northwest are cared for by a multi-disciplinary, experienced team of board certified cardiologists, interventional

cardiologists, and vascular surgeons. Each patient’s specific needs and disease stage are used to formulate an individualized treatment plan. “As with every procedure, we evaluate each patient’s case carefully to determine the best type of procedure to perform, said Dar. “We encourage patients to ask our team about this form of diagnostic testing to see if it is appropriate for them. With a Chest Pain Center accredited by the Society for Chest Pain Centers, Memorial Hermann Northwest’s comprehensive Heart and Vascular Program includes noninvasive cardiology, peripheral invasive cardiology, peripheral vascular surgery, and cardiac rehabilitation. Memorial Hermann Northwest offers three cardiac catheterization labs, complete with electrophysiology capabilities, to provide an array of diagnostic and interventional procedures.

Houston Humane Society to 19th Street ‘Parklet’ a hit with park lovers, Heights community host spay, neuter event for cats In July 2014, the city of Houston held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a single parking space on 19th St. in the Heights. Mayor Annise Parker and several city council members attended. Perched on top of the 19th St. concrete in that very parking space sits a 125square-foot, wooden, urban gathering space replete with reclaimed wooden benches and sustainable landscaping. This former parking space is now a little, welcoming greenspace - Houston’s pilot urban park, or “parklet. Introduced in San Francisco in 2011, a parklet is a new concept in urban planning and is defined as a small space serving as an extension of a sidewalk to provide amenities for people walking the street. Houston’s bloggers had a snarky field day over the parklet, particularly regarding its size. One stated that the mayor overturned a “teaspoon of dirt, at the ribbon-cutting, among other sarcastic comments. Many claimed that a parking space holds more value in Houston than a “park for insects, and that the public would simply ignore it. Were they correct? The Leader thought it would be interesting to take a look at the parklet six months after its launch. Jeff Kaplan is the owner of New Living Bedroom, the business fronting the parklet, and he is elated with the little

space’s activity. “Ripe Cuisine, a wonderful, all-vegan food truck, is often out there serving brunch in the parklet. We also have open-mic music sessions, and we even had a spontaneous performance of ‘Shakespeare in Parklet!’ The space has been a great success from its first day, he stated. Notably, Kaplan had the most to lose if the parklet failed. He spearheaded the project, surrendered one of only three parking spaces in front of his store, hand-constructed the platform and its canopy, then planted the special landscaping. “I approached Laura Spanjian,(the city of Houston’s Director of the Office of Sustainability) about it first. Laura is very interested in building urban public space, so she embraced it right away and called it a ‘pilet program.’ Kaplan said. “She understands the value public greenspace offers the community. “Still, the city of Houston’s Public Works Department just didn’t ‘get it’,“ Kaplan said. “It was hard for them to understand why on Earth a small business would choose to give up a parking space. Laura was able to hammer it through. On the two afternoons The Leader visited the parklet, it was buzzing with people. Most of those utilizing the space were eating and mingling while watching the parade of passers-by. A few were simply resting in the shade. “I really like this space, Adam Daniels said as he con-

sumed his brunch in the parklet. “The last time I was here, it was raining, so I was looking forward to returning so I could sit outside this time. “The parklet in the Heights has been extremely well-received and successful. Residents and customers love it, Spanjian said. “Now, other neighborhoods and businesses have inquired about building a parklet in their communities, Spanjian said. “We are working with them on viability, garnering neighborhood support, and more. We would love to see the pilot program expand.

Houston’s pet overpopulation problem isn’t new, and it isn’t going to be “fixed overnight. Every local neighborhood fights the same battle, countless homeless pets dumped each and every day all around our city. To truly win the war on pet overpopulation it is imperative for pet owners to do their part, and it starts with spaying and neutering pets. Part of being a responsible pet owner includes making sure your pet is not part of the overpopulation problem. Spaying and neutering is so important that Houston Humane Society has created an annual event called Fix Felix for Free to help local cat lovers neuter male cats for free. On Wednesday, Feb. 18, Houston Humane Society will neuter 700 male cats for free at the HHS Animal Wellness Clinic. It takes the entire HHS staff, many dedicated volunteers, and the staff of All Cats Veterinary Clinic coming together to make this event a success. It is a long, tiresome day of hard work that leaves staff and volunteers feeling rewarded for doing their part to combat pet overpopulation. Grateful cat owners can often be seen hugging and thanking staff for providing their pet with a quality surgery at a price anyone can afford, for free! Cat owners must have an appointment, and there is a limit of five cats per person. Domesticated and feral cats qualify, and for the health and safety of all cats, as well as

23rd annual Car Pros for Kids held every year in February

What do you think the biggest challenge is this year for the schools in HISD? The challenge for all schools is doing more with less. Until the Texas Legislature returns and right sizes the budget allocation for public education, our classrooms will not have the funding our students deserve to support a quality education. As a District II representative, are you required to visit your schools a certain amount of times per year? I am not required to visit any schools. It is actually not a good idea to visit schools unless you are invited. The Board members have to respect the administrative boundaries of day to day operations. Board presence can disrupt the school day and distract from the work. I prefer to come for special occasions and when invited.

Industry Buzz Report:

January 31, 2015

The Mosquitoes are taking over. Throughout the United States, mosquito populations are flourishing and insect-borne illnesses are on the rise. The news media regularly warns us to protect our families and ourselves. And so we retreat, taking cover indoors and missing out on all the fun. A quick internet search will reveal a plethora of articles about the dangers of mosquito-borne illnesses and the need for deliberate prevention methods.

Mosiquito borne illnesses are on the rise. What used to be only an irritant is now become a carrier of a variety of deadly disease such as Chikungunya, West Nile and Encephalitis.

The bite that make us sick. - No Vaccine Available mosquitoes and other biting insects can be worse than inconvenient – and sometimes downright deadly. Insect-borne illnesses are on the rise: More and more frequently, mosquito populations throughout the United States are testing positive for carrying West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). Tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever are a continuing concern as well.

June 17, 2014 -- A crippling mosquito-borne virus with a tonguetwisting name -- chikungunya -- has spread to the Caribbean, and U.S. travelers have brought it home to more than half the states in the U.S. Currently there is... Worldwide, mosquitoes are responsible for more than a million deaths each year due to parasitic and viral diseases like malaria and dengue fever. Pets are at risk too from these pests, susceptible to the parasitic heartworm larva carried by mosquitoes. As climate conditions allow mosquito and tick populations to thrive year after year, the threat of insectborne disease continues to rise, making it more important than ever to know the facts. Mosquito Joe looks to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website regarding insect-borne illness for the latest health

information. But there is good news. The spread of these illnesses can be slowed and mitigated by what happens in your own back yard. By learning how to control mosquitoes and other pests with the prevention techniques and services Mosquito Joe provides, you can reduce your family’s exposure to mosquitoes, ticks and the health risks they carry.

Protect your family by making your yard less mosquitofriendly:

prive them of it on a regular basis. • Frequently empty birdbaths, children’s toys, kiddie pools, tire swings and garden containers like watering cans and empty pots. • Regularly clean gutters and check for clogs so that rainwater doesn’t pool. • Use soil to fill in low areas in lawns and landscaped areas where rainwater may collect and stand for more than seven days. • Call Mosquito Joe – as part of our service, we point out possible breeding grounds and show you how to control mosquitoes.

• Eliminate standing water. Mosquitoes need water to breed, so de-

With Mosquito Joe you can go outside again. When a friendly, bright yellow Mosquito Joe van arrives, mosquitoes don’t stick around. Customers appreciate that their mosquito problem is solved for them – no chemicals to understand and no need to keep up with a schedule. Mosquito Joe does all that for them, with regular barrier sprays that kill mosquitoes on contact and repel new ones from moving in.
