Junk becomes nightmare for Fisher Street resident By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Thanks to residents’ persistence, the city of Houston is in the final stages of addressing what has become a public hazard in an Oak Forest neighborhood. An Oak Forest couple reached out to The Leader last week regarding a now-abandoned joint property on Fisher Street which appears to have spawned a public dumping ground, saying they had received no communication from the city as to the status of clearing the garbage away; but recent communications seem to indicate a plan is in place. “They were going to have a garage sale (on the property), so we thought they were taking some of it away, but people still just drag their trash out to the front yard and dump it,” said one of the residents, who wished to remain anonymous. By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Change is never painless, but almost always necessary, and an area hospital facility has undergone a massive transformation into a now award-winning model of healthcare. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital was awarded the McKesson Quest for Quality Prize® at the Health Forum/AHA Leadership Summit in San Diego this past July, and Senior Vice President & CEO Susan Jadlowski says factors such as improved communication and staff cohesiveness have led MHGH through its transformation from even five years ago into

The hyper-vigilance of a Leader-area resident and the community at large solved one recent theft case, and may have busted several other area cases open. Last Monday, Heights resident David Anzola returned home to discover one of his bikes missing from the side of his house. Following a review of his home video security system, he saw a person now believed to be Jose Madrid, 32, simply stroll up, unlock the gate and ride off on the $300 bike. “I saw on the camera that he had been driving around my neighborhood— he passed my street three times before getting out of his car,” Anzola said. “Before he does you can actually see me coming out of my Capturing this photo has house as he’s at the led police to the name of stop sign—I didn’t someone who may have stolen from victims all even notice.” Anzola proceeded over the area. to share the video on the Houston Heights Facebook page and Nextdoor shortly, asking for any information on the perpetrator. “If people have security cameras and social media pages, that’s where it needs to go in terms of finding these criminals and getting them where they belong,” he said. Precinct One Constable Alan Rosen echoed Anzola’s sentiments, saying the advancement of technology and video surveillance adds another layer to crime-solving abilities. “The more people have video surveillance cameras up and can get good images, it can often lead to solving more crimes,” he said. However, not even in Anzola’s dreams could he have imagined a response so swift and forthcoming. Numerous residents responded by posting a photo from Madrid’s Facebook page. “I was humbled to see the community was really into helping me find this guy,” he said. Rosen has preached the community police model since taking the Constable’s position in

the award-winning healthcare facility it now is. At the hospital level, Memorial Hermann Greater Heights was the only Houston hospital to earn recognition as an AHA McKesson Quest for Quality finalist by demonstrating a “tireless organizational commitment to and
progress in achieving quality, safety and effective, efficient, timely and patient-centered care” “We’re talking about quality, patient experience, leadership and all of those things combined,” Jadlowski said. “We’re working hard to become a highreliability organization—which means zero harm to patients, and we’ve made so many strides in that over the last couple of years.” Just because she witnessed the transformations herself, however, the honor came as quite the shock as well as one of the best Christmas gifts she could have imagined. “I couldn’t believe that we were See MHGH P. 7A
