Man apparently killed for his groceries By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com A man was found shot to death Thursday, Oct. 12 on Lehman Street, between North Shepherd and Brinkman Street, and police believe the victim was killed for his groceries. According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded to a report of a person shot and found the victim lying in the street. The victim, 65-year-old Eugene Duke, suffered a gunshot and was pronounced dead at the scene. It is believed Duke was walking home from a nearby

store on North Shepherd with his purchases when he was approached by an unknown suspect who attempted to rob him of his belongings. The victim refused to give his belongings up and was shot by the suspect. “I just can’t understand why someone would do what they did, if it really was because he wouldn’t give up his groceries. It’s just such a sad thing,” said a neighbor, identified only as Larry, who described Duke as a quiet, soft-spoken man, who was polite to everyone he encountered. For Larry, it remains beyond

belief such an incident could occur on this quiet stretch of Lehman Street. “Here’s a man that was just minding his own business, and someone decides to take his life. I mean, you could’ve just wounded the guy and gotten away,” he said. The suspect is described only as a black male, 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall, approximately 140 to 180 pounds and was wearing a white muscle shirt. It is believed they fled in a small four-door white or gray

By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com A large number of Houston stores (including some in the local area) have been hit hard by burglars and robbers in recent months, but police believe they are closing in on squelching what appears to be a local theft ring. As of press time, an estimated $100,000 (at least) worth of electronics has been stolen in cases over the last several months, and many of the cases are allegedly the work of suspects affiliated with the north side Hotboys gang according to media reports. Three suspects were in custody as of press time, but at least two remained at large. The suspects have allegedly hit at least two dozen stores, showing a proclivity for one certain type of electronic. Recycling to resume, more debris removal needed By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com While it appears some Harvey recovery efforts are progressing ahead of schedule, and one city service could soon resume, the continued suspension of other normally-scheduled services has stretched some to the breaking point. At the Oct. 11 regular city council meeting, Mayor Sylvester Turner addressed several questions regarding recycling, debris pickup and restarting of a multitude of city services that have been suspended since Hurricane Harvey, which has led to frustration as homeowners attempt to move on. Ever since Harvey whipped

through Houston, residents have been dragging various quantities of debris, trash bags and recycling bins out to the curb, only to drag them back untouched as city crews focus on the first of three passes for heavy debris pickup. Since debris collection began Aug. 30, hundreds of city trucks and workers have crisscrossed the city affected by Hurricane Harvey, removing more than 1 million cubic yards of heavy debris from front yards and sidewalks as residents begin to rebuild their homes and their lives, and Turner said the pickup is actually proceeding ahead of schedule. “In most areas of the city, they have gone through and

made the first pass, at least picking up the heavier debris,” he said Wednesday. “I want to commend Harry Hayes and his team, as they have aggressively moved forward when people thought it would be at least a couple of months before making that first pass.” Seeing as the debris removal has proceeded well ahead of schedule, that could also mean city trucks being freed up to finally restart normal collection schedules for trash and heavy recycling that have been suspended since Hurricane Harvey. According to Turner, the city currently looking at kick starting the return of curbside recycling hopefully in the first week of November. Turner, however, did ac-
