Challenges they face Though it is a challenge, Diabetes need not be an obstacle Kari Thomas vividly remembers the day her 3-year old daughter Lucia was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. “She was drinking a lot of water, and had lost weight,” said Thomas. “She was irritable too. One day at school she refused to eat at all and just wanted to drink. I took her to the pediatrician’s office and told them I wanted to test her blood sugar. They did and it was almost 400. A normal range is between 60 and 130.” They went straight to Texas Children’s where they spent the next four days, trying to get Lucia’s blood sugar under control. “I went immediately into triage mode,” said Thomas. “Grieving came later.” Lucia is one of the 24 out of 100,000 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes, previously known as juvenile diabetes. The disease is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, according to the American Diabetes Association. Only 5% of people of the 2.9 million in the US with diabetes have Type 1. During November’s National Diabetes Awareness month, the health care community seeks to raise awareness about Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes (diabetes while pregnant). Transwestern’s Houston headquarters announces it has been retained by local developer 927 Stude LLC to provide leasing services for Heights Central, a proposed 15,000square-foot medical office building. Planned for the northwest corner of Studewood and Omar streets in the Heights, Heights Central will be the first medical office building constructed in this area in eight years. The building is expected to be completed in fourth-quarter 2016 and is currently available for prelease. Ashley Cassel, vice president with Transwestern’s Healthcare Advisory Services Group, is handling leasing services. Chris Dray, part owner of the Heights Central development, is a long-time resident of the Heights and has recognized the substantial need for medical real estate in response to the changing demographics of the neighborhood. “There is a major influx of insured, college-educated, young families in
the Heights,” said Dray. “These residents are traveling to Upper Kirby, West University, the Texas Medical Center or elsewhere to receive medical care.” “All of the major healthcare players are recognizing the need for quality healthcare providers in the area,” said Cassel. “Methodist and Memorial Hermann have both recently laid a stake nearby, which is no surprise when you take a look at the demographics of the area. We are extremely excited for this opportunity because Heights Central is one of those projects that will make a difference and fulfill a major need for Heights residents.” The three-story, Class A medical office building boasts a 4.8 per 1,000 square feet parking ratio, providing ample parking for physicians and their clientele. Heights Central provides easy access to Interstates 10 and 45 and Loop 610, as well as many nearby dining options such as Ruggles, Liberty Kitchen, Antidote and Glass Wall, which is partially owned by Dray.

Recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for meeting national quality standards, the program is for people with all types of diabetes, whether newly-diagnosed or well-established, who want to improve their blood glucose control. Cadena worked with Goodson to develop a healthy eating plan, learn how to be active, monitor glucose levels, understand her medication, reduce risks and develop healthy coping skills that could help control her diabetes. “You have to want it,” Cadena said. “You can’t just take the medication and expect it to work.” Cadena began exercising, cooking and eating healthy. For Maria Cadena, 46, it was a question of when rather than if, she was going to become diabetic. Family history convinced her that it was only a matter of time before she joined an estimated 116 million adults and children in the United States who have diabetes or prediabetes. So Cadena threw caution to the wind and decided to live the way she wanted, especially when it came to fast food. Enjoy the drive-thru now, worry later, she thought. “I really regret that now,” Cadena lamented. “I really wish that in my thirties I would have thought about my diet more.” Cadena’s self-fulfilling prophecy came to fruition in January. She was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and her A1c level, which measures glucose concentration in the blood, was at 11.6 percent – more than double what is considered the healthy level, exacerbating complications from the disease. Already mourning the recent loss of her father, who was also diabetic, grim thoughts crept in for Cadena following her diagnosis. “I can’t die at 45,” Cadena said to herself at the time. “I have to take care of my mother and brother.” Cadena decided to take control of her life with the help of Melissa Montoya Celi, M.D., a Memorial Hermann Medical Group family medicine physician affiliated with Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, and the hospital’s diabetes educator, Christine Goodson, RD, LD, CDE. Thousands walk for research, cure at Walk MS: Houston Gynecology & OB Services By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com
Last weekend’s good weather turned out to be a perfect start for walkers like Jennifer Rowen, who turned out for the annual Walk MS: Houston event Nov. 8 to support friends and families battling multiple sclerosis. Rowen, an employee of Johnson & Johnson who lives just south of the Heights, joined more than 1,500 other Houstonians last weekend as part of the event which supported the National MS Society. Walk MS: Houston aimed at raising $200,000 to support research, programs and services for those diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system, affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide according to the National MS Society. Most are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men diagnosed, and contend with symptoms
ranging from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis, according to the organization’s website. Rowen’s uncle has been fighting multiple sclerosis for about 10 years and was first diagnosed when she was much younger. “I guess when I was young I didn’t really understand what all came along with having multiple sclerosis,” Rowen said. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned more about the disease and about him and how it’s something that has never really stopped him.” She said that supporting her uncle over the years also helped them realize something else about their family. “We would always be there to support him but, in turn, we realized how much support he gave us and how much stronger he made us,” Rowen said. “I’m lucky to have him in my life and it has helped make me a better person.” For Walk MS: Houston, Rowen helped lead a group of about 10 people from her
company in a move that she said was determined almost unanimously. “The majority of people had a family member or a friend dealing with multiple sclerosis,” Rowen said. “It was kind of a no brainer.” Rowen’s team, Top Shelf Texas, first set a goal of raising about $2,400 but would go on to raise over $3,000. The walk took place at the University of Houston Recreation & Wellness Center with both one mile and 5K routes for participants. While the event didn’t achieve its goal of raising nearly $200,000 – according to the website, it has since raised $134,000 – Rowen said the event was great for her and her team. “From the time we got there, to the time the walk started and all the way to the end it was amazing,” Rowen said. “Everyone was there for the same cause and were excited to be there and raise awareness for multiple sclerosis.”

New Zealanders visit Garden Oaks area to promote new flights By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com In October, the Garden Oaks area got a little more Kiwi, after dozens of New Zealanders gathered at the Bell Tower on West 34th Street alongside nearly 100 Houston-area travel agents to promote and educate locals on new non-stop flights to their country. In April, Air New Zealand announced it was expanding its North American presence by offering nonstop service from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston to Auckland, New Zealand up to five times per week. Flights are expected to commence mid-December and for local travel representatives like Melodye Martinelli, owner of Let’s Travel Together, the new flights offer a chance to kick up local interest. “One of the good things about the nonstop flight is the flight leaves Houston at 8:30 in the evening and you actually arrive there two days
later,” Martinelli said. “It’s a 14 and a half hour flight, so hopefully you can sleep well, get a good night’s rest and then wake up and have breakfast and prepare for landing in New Zealand.” Those traveling to New Zealand can also expect an easier time with their money. “Our dollar is so strong right now that the cost and value is better than it has been in the last 10 years,” Martinelli said. Another bonus for frequent flyers is that ANZ has a partnership with United Airlines, and with a long flight and plenty of miles, a vacation or business trip offers people a chance to rack up plenty of points, Martinelli said. “I believe they’ll continue to work to pique interest,” Martinelli said about the visit. “There’s so much that can go wrong with connecting flights, between lost luggage, weather and timing. Having a nonstop flight debuting like this is wonderful. I’ve personally been going there for 12 years, as well.”
Control from P. 1A A1c level fell to 6.5 percent and she shed 36 pounds. While stories like Cadena’s are highlighted in November – Diabetes Awareness Month – the disease is a daily reality for many.
Prevention is the preferred route
“Many people have control over several factors that can lead to diabetes,” Dr. Montoya Celi said. “Maintaining a healthy weight and diet, as well as exercising regularly can certainly help prevent the onset of diabetes for many people, regardless of family history. “For those who have been diagnosed with diabetes, education and action are crucial,” Dr. Montoya Celi continued. “Learn as much as you can about how to control your glucose levels and then commit to taking steps to do so.” For more information about Diabetes Self-Management Education classes at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, call 713-867-3336 or visit www.memorialhermann.org/heights. Novak. “We have put in less than we took out,” she said. When new dirt was put in, it was levelled. Even the new concrete makes a huge difference. It’s all less impervious.” Alex Pollock from Boy Scout Troop 604 raised funds and led volunteers to install a rain garden that includes native Texas plants to fulfill his Eagle Scout service requirement. Pollock, a sophomore at St. Thomas High School, said he wanted to do his project at Stevens Elementary after hearing about the school from his scoutmaster. “I saw everything that was being done at Stevens to make it a better school, and I wanted to be a part of this movement to help out,” Pollock said. Evan Gomez, also from Boy Scout Troop 604, is planning to install stainless steel lab outdoor tables for science projects. Novak said that the school received a small grant from the National Wildlife Federation to put in a butterfly garden so the students can tag Monarch butterflies on their way to Mexico. “We want to put a passageway to it through an arbor so it’s kind of like a secret garden,” said Novak. Trees for Houston is donating 55 trees to the park, including crepe myrtle and bald cypress. The school is having a beautification project this Saturday to plant trees and also do some painting. Volunteers are welcome and appreciated. The painting portion includes painting cedar boards to look like book spines. These will be placed along the south side fence along Lamonte to give some visual interest and mask one of Stevens’ temporary buildings. Volunteers from the Leather Apron Foundation already painted poles along the school’s walkway during their recent service day. Want to make a donation? They are still accepting them. Just go to sparkpark.org/donate and designate a donation for Stevens or stop by the school in person.

The Stevens Elementary SPARK Park is closing in on completion, however due to rain and permitting delays it won’t be a finished product by the dedication ceremony on November 19. “We’re hoping by January,” said school librarian and Stevens SPARK park committee member Leslie Novak, noting that because of SPARK park week, the dedication ceremony will proceed as previously planned. Principal Jennifer Barrientez will welcome expected attendees State Representative Sylvester Turner, Councilmember Ellen Cohen, and HISD Trustee Rhonda SkillernJones as well as architects Matt Baumgarten and Nelly Fuentes with SWA, among others. Stevens Elementary raised over $35,000 for the SPARK Park and the Stevens PTO donated over $12,000. Justin Harrod, the manager of Raising Cane’s on Ella Blvd., raised money all summer for the park and purchased three new park benches. Additional funding for the park includes $5,000 from Houston ISD, $5,000 from Commissioner Jack Cagle Harris Co. Pct. 4; $25,000 from The Brown Foundation; and $15,000 from Total Oil. There is progress each day on the project which when completed will encompass recovered green space including a rain garden, a new sidewalk, relocated play equipment, a resurfaced asphalt play area next to a brightly colored running track, and wooden decking. Novak reports that the concrete was recently poured for the new sidewalks and that the asphalt pour was imminent. Art teacher Luzmarie Alvarez has already created a mural of school supplies, which faces the park and is featured in the 2016 SPARK art calendar. The deck will be started after the dedication. All the work up to this point has done a lot for the drainage problems that Stevens has previously had, according to

TEMPORARY CROWNS Chase Baker, D.D.S.
I
f you’ll be waiting for a crown to be fitted to a tooth, chances are you’ll be given a temporary crown until the permanent one is ready. The “temporaryâ€? will have cosmetic value in maintaining the appearance of your mouth. It will also serve some important functions, such as maintaining the proper space and bite relationships with adjacent and opposing teeth. Often the temporary crown will be made of acrylic material of the exact shade to match your other teeth. But it is not intended to last very long, only until the permanent crown is in place to give the tooth long-lasting protection. Sometimes a temporary crown may have to last several months. This can happen if other work has to be completed before the crown is put in place. If this is the case, a longer-lasting temporary crown can be made. The temporary crown is usually cemented in with a very weak cement so that it is easily removed. If it should come off before the permanent crown is ready, be sure and tell your dentist. An unprotected tooth could cause further problems. Prepared as a public service to promote better dental health. From the ofďŹ ce of: Chase Baker, D.D.S., 3515 Ella Blvd., 713-682-4406.

Becoming children of god
n the Bible, our Lord speaks frequently about children and being childlike: ‘Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these’ (Mark 10:14). We are also told that, ‘to all who receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave power to become children of God’ (John 1:12). As adults we have a tendency to over-analyze everything and live our lives on the basis of logic. In comparison, children trust completely in their parents or guardian, and they depend on them for all of their physical and emotional needs. They don’t worry or fret about what tomorrow will bring; they trust that someone will always take care of them. We should strive to develop a loving and trusting relationship with God, and we should be confident that He has our lives in His control. We should not be overly concerned when things don’t work out like we think they should; accepting God’s will in our lives is part of being a child of God. I assure you that whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.

REAGAN: SAVE THE NAME ORGANIZATIONAL RALLY When: Tuesday, December 8, 2015 Time: 3 - 7 PM Where: SPJST LODGE, 1435 Beall St., Houston , Texas, 77008 Purpose: Protest of proposed bureaucratic action The Houston Independent School District (HISD) Board is currently in the process of establishing a committee structure for the purpose naming/renaming HISD facilities. According to some reports, removing the name of John H. Reagan from the traditionally assigned high school seems to be high on the Board’s agenda. No alternative name has thus far been published. To demonstrate the depth and strength of our opposition to this HISD Board proposal, a rally has been scheduled at the SPJST Lodge in the Heights on December 8th from 3 to 7 p.m.. Knowledgeable speakers will be there to inform us. Barbeque will be served for as long as it lasts and beverages are available for purchase. You are invited to wear your colors and letter sweaters (if they still fit). Media have been notified and presence is assumed. To assist our attendance estimates, please RSVP your plans to attend to one of the following addresses: Jessie Hamlin: jessie_hamlin@netzero.net Sonia Price: SPrice9010@aol.com Remember, FREEDOM ISN’T FREE. Things are getting chilly at Box 13 studio
Two years ago I met Heights artist David McClain, a member of a non-profit called Box 13 ArtSpace. McClain and other resident artists are hosting a cold, cool show this Saturday night, and they want you to chill with them. In an email, current president of Box 13, Emily Link, told me more about this unique space and the event this Saturday evening. “BOX 13 is different in that we are one of the only 100% artist-run, non-profit spaces in town,” Link said. “All of our artist members who rent studio space are also required to help run the organization, including programming exhibitions in our two interior gallery spaces and one window gallery, and participating in all aspects of fund-raising events. We provide studio space at a lower rate than much of the other spaces in town and encourage our members to exhibit their work here. BOX 13 is a community of artists that serves individuals working in all mediums, and our galleries provide exhibition opportunities to artists both nationally and internationally who are working in more experimental and innovative ways.” On Saturday night, there will be a live performance from artist Daniel McFarlane’s band,

Daniel and the Thunderheads and they’ll be playing on a set members are creating. “Artist made snow globes are pretty interesting [and] we’ve got everything from traditional globes to ones made with Legos and ceramics,” Link said. “The thing I’m most stoked about is decorating/turning the Box into an [actual] ICE BOX! Should be a fun, interactive experience for all who attend, while raising money for a worthwhile organization. Oh, and jello shots.” I sat down with Box 13 President, Emily Link, for a quick chat. How long have you lived in the Heights? I was a renter in the Heights, off and on, from 1991 to 2003 (at one point, our landlords were Gus and Sharon Kopriva, and they were pretty great landlords). Jane Schmitt and I bought our current house on Arlington St. in 2003. What brought you here? People used to say that the Heights was where people from Montrose moved when they grew up. It seemed like a natural extension of the artsy part of Houston that I related to best. There are at least four houses on our block with people who make or teach art in them, and this isn’t even counting the musicians.

From 1990 to 2008, I was a full-time practicing attorney and then went to graduate school in studio art, with an emphasis on photography, at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Even while practicing law, I was always interested in making, and collecting, various kinds of art. What is your connection to Box 13? I’ve been a resident member of BOX 13 ArtSpace since 2010, when I returned to Houston from Chicago. I maintain a studio there and have served on the board, curated exhibitions, and had shows of my own work at BOX 13. Where else can folks find your art? I have shown photography, painting and sculpture in a number of galleries around Texas and Chicago and had my work published in magazines in Texas, New York, Germany and elsewhere. I am not represented by a gallery, but am always happy to show people work in my studio! I also have been doing some writing (a poem is published in the current issue of Borderlands Texas Poetry Review and I recently appeared as Sheriff Tate in Upstage Theatre’s production of To Kill A Mockingbird at Lambert Hall. Anything else you’d like to add about being an artist living in the Heights ... I love the herons that nest in the trees on our block, I love the proximity to so much art and culture. I love the public art on display along Heights Boulevard. I like seeing quirky sculptures in people’s front yards. I like walking half a block to vote in elections. I love that there are finally good restaurants in the

females, a vaginal yeast infection. Although Type 1 diabetes can appear at any age, it appears at two noticeable peaks. One between 4 and 7 years old, and the second between 10 and 14 years old. With Type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin, as opposed to Type 2 where the diabetic makes insulin, but their cells don’t use it as well as they should. Insulin is a hormone that the body needs to get glucose in the sugars and starches you eat from the bloodstream into the cells of the body for energy. Type 1 diabetics need lifelong insulin therapy to remain healthy. In Lucia’s case, her parents gave her insulin shots for about a year and half. They also counted her carbs and monitored her blood sugar. Carbs raise blood sugar while insulin and exercise lowers it. Thomas’ goal is to keep the scale in balance, although for Lucia, that blood sugar range is more generous – between 80 and 200. “It sounds easier than it is [to manage it],” said Thomas. “Stress effects it, growth hormones effect it.” Signs of high blood sugar are irritability and thirst. Indications of low blood sugar are dizziness and a feeling of butterflies in the stomach. When she was 4 years old, Lucia started wearing a pump to deliver insulin which Thomas said gives her daughter a lot more flexibility but was a learning curve for her parents managing the settings.

At Oak Forest Elementary, Lucia sees her school nurse at least twice a day and both her teachers and classmates have gotten information on her condition and how to best help her. Thomas said that she’s noticed the misconceptions of others about Type 1 diabetes over the years. “They think that people did something to get Type 1, which is not true,” said Thomas, noting that there is a genetic component to the disease, plus an environmental one. “It just happens.” She’s had friends with diabetic children tell her about unsolicited advice they’ve gotten about getting their kids enough exercise, and not feeding them sugar. “It’s a lifelong condition, and there is no cure,” said Thomas. While Thomas said her heart breaks for her daughter in some ways, her goal is that Lucia will always be able to do the things that other children do. “It will not be a handicap,” she said. “We’ll always find a workaround.” Thomas wants her daughter to know, especially as she gets older, that her condition is nothing to be ashamed of. “She has never known anything different,” said Thomas. A local teen who does remember life before Type 1 diabetes is Shepherd Park Plaza’s Tony Cangelosi who was 8 years old in 2005 when he was diagnosed. “When we found out, we were expecting to hear ‘bladder infection’,” said mother Vicki. “We were
shocked to hear Type 1, since no one in our family had that.” “When the doctor told me I didn’t know much about it,” said Cangelosi, who watched videos about the disease and also talked to educators at Texas Children’s. For a few years after his diagnosis, Vicki would give him his insulin injections five times a day. Once the pump was available, Cangelosi had more freedom. “It was a hassle to go back and forth,” said Cangelosi. If he’s not able to exercise, Cangelosi can increase the insulin through his pump. He can also estimate the carbs in a given meal and adjust the insulin as appropriate. The Lutheran High North student previously attended St. Ambrose and says that most people who know him know about his condition. “They’ve always asked me if I can eat anything,” he said. “Sometimes when I’m eating lunch and pull my pump out, people will ask,” he said. “One time a teacher thought it was a cell phone, and wanted me to hand it over. I had to explain.” Cangelosi said he’s gotten used to the condition and doesn’t think too much about it anymore. It hasn’t stopped him from his school activities or his pursuit of a college degree. Proud mom Vicki says he has a 3.91 GPA and has been accepted to Texas State University and the University of Houston. “I honestly don’t think it has limited me,” he said.
