Football: St. Thomas High School marches on in post-season

By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com St. Thomas High School Football Coach Tim Fitzpatrick said his team will be “ready to play against Prestonwood Christian Academy next week in Dallas, following a significant victory over Liberty Christian School Saturday Nov. 22. The Eagles defeated the Liberty Christian High School Warriors 20-7, as STH extended their win streak at home to 20. The win also marks the third TAPPS 5A playoff win at home since 2012. However, Fitzpatrick downplayed some of these statistical milestones and said it all came down to the heart and soul of his football team. “Those kinds of statistics are for the pundits to discuss, Fitzpatrick said. “Our kids are comfortable playing at home and they love wearing the red. The Eagles maintained a solid lead over the Warriors, putting up 14 points in the first half and six more in the second, with the latter six courtesy of the team’s kicker Jack Brady. “Putting those six points up on the board near the end definitely allowed us to take a bit of a breath and relax, Fitzpatrick said. “It’s not quite as nail biting when you have more than a ten point lead. Defensively, Fitzpatrick said his team was much bigger than LCHS’s and STH’s defensive line “did a great job of controlling the play at the line of scrimmage. “Not having to do things like blitzing a lot certainly helps our players, Fitzpatrick said. “It gives some of our cover guys the chance to play their normal routine. Some of the weather may have also had an impact on the game, as the kickoff was moved from its originally scheduled time in the afternoon to 11 a.m., due to rain and wind. Fitzpatrick said the weather wasn’t as big a factor as some may have thought, and the team effectively moved the ball down the field and wore down the Warriors as the game progressed. Nonetheless, Fitzpatrick said the Eagle’s offense does need to be a “little more clean.
In just his second year as coach, Martin Wall is hoping to build on the improvements the boys basketball program at Scarborough High School has seen under his leadership. “Last season we went 11-16 and finished fifth in our district, Wall said. “That was a pretty big improvement as they previously had won six games total over six years combined. For a couple years they went entirely without a win. The team is already off to a positive start, opening the season 2-0, with a win over Northbrook High School by a score of 53-38 and a decisive win over KIPP Houston Friday Nov. 21 with a score of 70-39. During the game against KIPP, Wall said freshman Quinton Hudson gave a standout performance with 16 points, followed by senior Jonathan Garcia-Loza with 15 points and junior Hunter Janacek

FAST CASH SALE Source: St. Thomas High School’s Official Twitter While the numbers behind St. Thomas High School’s successful football season might be exciting for pundits, Coach Tim Fitzpatrick said he is keeping his attention on what will be happening on the field next week against Prestonwood Christian Academy.
“We had two interceptions and that was a bit of a concern, Fitzpatrick said. “Especially with one of those interceptions leading directly to LCS’s only touchdown. Despite some occasional mistakes Fitzpatrick praised his team for being able to come up big when situations demanded it, including a stand at the goal line on a fourth down. Looking forward to next week’s game against Prestonwood Christian Academy, Fitzpatrick said his team will
have to focus on slowing down the opponent’s offense. PCA played against Trinity Christian School Friday Nov. 21, which was a matchup that turned into a high scoring affair with a final score of 55-48. “As a defensive guy, those kinds of neighbors give me a headache and make my stomach upset, Fitzpatrick said. “I might have to buy some Pepto Bismol and we have to make sure to do a better job of slowing down their offense. They’re very explosive, with a lot of big

receivers, so they obviously can get a lot of points. Fitzpatrick said his Eagles will be ready to take the field once next week arrives, and he looks forward to taking another shot at the state championship. “All of the pundits can talk about the stats and the streaks going into the game but it’s all going to come down to who is going to play better Saturday, Fitzpatrick said. “I promise you this – we will be ready to play.

with 14 points. “Hudson isn’t known as much as he probably should be, Wall said. “He’s actually playing the most minutes out of anyone on the team so far and his performance that night shows his ceiling is pretty high. A player like Hudson deciding to attend Scarborough also bodes well for the high school in general. “One of the encouraging things about where this program is and where it’s going is that some of the freshman are choosing to come here rather than some of the neighboring high schools. For the first win on Northbrook, Wall called it a “typical first game, but one that was still strong defensively and one they would build on in their second game against KIPP Houston. “It wasn’t great but it was good enough, Wall said. “We have only three guys that played last year on the Varsity
team this year and it will take a little while to get settled and get chemistry built. Wall said the Spartans were picked fourth in the district, which offers a tough schedule including bouts against two teams that are in the top 10 in the state. Wall said his team doesn’t have a particular large amount of depth or size, but plenty of heart. “We have a lot of really good kids that care about each other, Wall said. Among some of the standout players Wall is expecting big things from includes Janacek, Garcia-Loza and Jorge Martinez, with the latter two likely taking on leadership roles, mentoring their younger teammates. “Those three are definitely a big part of the heart and soul of the team, Wall said. Wall said he and his players have held fourteen practices since starting on Oct. 29, and his philosophy has been stressing more of the character de-

velopment side of athleticism. “When you have kids that want to be good kids first, the basketball side will follow, Wall said. “We’re spending all of these practices trying to teach these young kids how to handle the competitive nature of the game and meet the standards we have for the program. The Spartans have high hopes coming into the 201415 season, and Wall said he’ll be there every step of the way for his athletes. “We really want to represent the school and the community and go out there every night and see if we can build on last year, Wall said.
