Putting spirit on display

Photo by Betsy Denson Gonzales spends about 30 minutes each day putting his characters out and lighting them properly. A personal favorite for Gonzales? The Abominable Snowman.

For one local resident the spirit keeps growing By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Call him the anti-Scrooge. Every year for the past 25 years, Johnnie Gonzales, along with wife Mary, has turned the couple’s yard on the corner of 43rd and Alba in Garden Oaks into a Christmas showplace for

young and old alike. The house and the front yard tree are draped with lights – but it’s the other additions that get the most attention. The Abominable Snowman and Rudolph? Check. The Peanuts gang? Yep. Along the white fence that borders Alba, there’s Santa and his sleigh

Photo by Betsy Denson Gonzales starts the season by beginning to put out decorations the day after Halloween.

Foreign investors planning high-rise condos in Heights For The Leader A new, 35-story condominium project is headed to the Greater Heights area, according to a report by the Houston Business Journal. According to the report, Fabian Trujillo, a luxury home realtor with Keller Williams Metropolitan, is working with private investors to develop the project on about 2 acres of land at the northeast corner of Interstate 10 and North Shepherd Drive. The project would have between 120 to 150 units ranging from 1,200 square feet to 3,200 square feet each.

The units would feature special amenities like naturally heated and cooled floors and the tower itself would be outfitted with special solar panels that would help power the building, according to the report. A daycare center might also be incorporated into the building and it might also feature a “rooftop amenity deck with a resort-style pool, landscaping with a river-like water feature and a pet area.” The report says Trujillo hopes to have a sales center open by the fourth quarter of 2016 and would potentially break ground soon afterward.

along with a Christmas train featuring the Looney Tunes gang. Who knew the Tasmanian Devil had so much Christmas spirit? According to Gonzales, it’s “all for the kids.” That means the neighborhood children as much as it does his nine grandchildren. He wants it to

be accessible to all and that’s why he puts up a sign in the yard inviting people to get out and take photos with the characters. “We get all kinds of people coming by to take pictures and video,” said Gonzales. Gonzales has lived in the neighborhood since he was a boy. He used to live in the house directly behind the one he lives in now. The beginnings of his Christmas yard started with neighbor Larry Bowman who used to make and display the characters. When Bowman moved to Indiana, Gonzales got the figures to use in his own yard. As some of them have needed repair over the years, Gonzales learned how to do that – and what’s more, he started making new ones. “I’m working on Frozen for next year,” he said, “And those little yellow guys from the movie.” Minion fans, you’re in luck. Because the decorations have been an investment of time and money, Gonzales isn’t leaving anything to chance, or thieves. He brings the characters inside when he’s not around to keep an eye on them and puts them out again every evening. When he does reposition the characters each day, Gonzales puts the yard spotlights out too, shifting them for maximum effect. His favorite character? The Abominable Snowman. It’s hard not to love that fanged fellow. It’s not just the outside that gets the holiday treatment. The inside of the house is festooned as well. Those stopping to take photos in the yard will get a good look at a collection of Nutcrackers that dominate one of the windows. Each year people anticipate when the display will go up. Forget waiting until the day after Thanksgiving. Gonzales started putting his up the day after Halloween. He says people ask him about his electricity bill but claims he doesn’t even pay attention to it. “This is something we enjoy doing,” he said. “I don’t even worry about it.”

Realty Real Talk Home sales fall for a second straight month in November. Average price sees its first decline in nearly four years. For The Leader The onset of the holiday shopping season and continued strains within the energy industry weighed on Houston’s housing market in November. Home sales fell for the second consecutive month and dragged average price down with them, marking the first price decline since February 2012. According to the latest monthly report prepared by the Houston Association of Realtors (HAR), November single-family home sales slid 10.5 percent with a total of 4,595 sales compared to 5,135 a year earlier. Only homes in the $150,000 to $250,000 price segment experienced positive sales volume. That, coupled with a 22 percent drop in luxury home sales, accounted for the decline in average price. Among homes that did sell in November, Days on Market (DOM), or the number of days it took the average home to sell, edged up to 55 days versus 54 in 2014. Slower sales allowed for a slight improvement in months of inventory, the estimated time it would take to empty out current active housing inventory based on sales over the previous 12 months. It grew from a 2.7-months supply last November to a 3.4months supply. Inventory has held at about a 3.5-months supply for the past five months and remains below the current national housing supply of 4.8 months of inventory.

While the average price of a single-family home fell 3.5-percent year-over-year to $262,064, the median price— the figure at which half the homes sold for more and half for less— reached the highest level ever for a November, rising 2.2 percent to $200,000. Sales of all property types totaled 5,623 units, down 10.1 percent compared to last November. Total dollar volume fell 13.5 percent to $1.4 billion. “The Houston housing market saw further correction in November and will likely exit the year with exactly the declines that were forecast coming off record-setting sales in 2014 and an environment of limited inventory and plunging oil prices,” said HAR Chair Nancy Furst with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Anderson Properties.

November Monthly Market Comparison

The Houston housing market saw declines in most measurements in the November 2015 versus 2014 analysis, with single-family home sales, total property sales and total dollar volume all down along with single-family home average price, while median price of a single-family home climbed to a record high for a November. Month-end pending sales for single-family homes totaled 5,617, a 6.3 percent drop from a year earlier, which is an indication that sales will likely remain in negative territory when the December numbers

are tallied. Active listings, or the number of available properties, at the end of November rose 21.5 percent to 33,272. Houston’s housing inventory has held at about a 3.5-months supply since July of this year, up from the 2.7-months supply recorded in November 2014. That level still remains below the current 4.8-months national supply of homes reported by the National Association of Realtors (NAR). Single-family home sales totaled 4,595 in November, down 10.5 percent from November 2014. That marks the second straight monthly decline, although there have been a total of six months of negative sales for all of 2015. The average price fell for the first time since February 2012, declining 3.5 percent to $262,064. However, the median price achieved the highest level ever for a November in Houston, rising 2.2 percent year-over-year to $200,000. The average number of days it took to sell a home, or DOM, was 55 in November versus 54 days a year earlier.

• Single-family home sales fell 10.5 percent compared to November 2014, marking the second consecutive monthly decline and sixth month of negative sales volume for all of 2015; • Total property sales dropped 10.1 percent (5,623 units); • Total dollar volume decreased 13.5 percent to $1.4 billion; • At $262,064, the single-family home average price saw its first decline since February 2012; • At $200,000, the single-family home median price achieved a November high; • Single-family homes months of inventory climbed to a 3.4-months supply versus 2.7 months a year earlier.

Tea Time with Heights Woman’s Club By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader The Houston Heights Woman’s Club hosted its annual Victorian Tea on Sunday, Dec. 13, and once again, the stunning event sold out. Members of the century-old club and their guests enjoyed an array of sweet and savory treats, scrumptious tea, Victorian holiday decorations and the warm, welcoming friendship for which the Houston Heights Woman’s Club is renowned. This year, the tea was chaired by HHWC club members Margaret Ferenz, Amber Rabo, Edda Tinis. As guests entered the clubhouse, they were welcomed by carols sung by The Houston Cecilia Chamber Choir with greenery and decorations provided by Buchanan’s and The Purple Cat Resale Shop. In keeping with the Victorian theme, the interior of the historic structure was decked out by club member Lisa Cari in honor of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Decorations included a collection of leather-bound books by the author and garland representing characters in the story. Each dining table in the room was arranged by a different club member. Each was very different from the next, but all were dazzling and often included hundred-year-old china, fourth-generation table linens and antique silverware - Heights family heirlooms. “The most remarkable part of the tea for me is that moment before we start” said HHWC member Barbara Potter. “It’s that moment when it’s still quiet, when I look around the beautiful room and see

the decorations, the tea services, the attention to detail. That moment takes my breath away every single year.” Potter’s contribution to the event is the tea itself. Through experimentation over time, Potter has perfected brewing “Republic of Teas” Darjeeling in quantities sufficient to serve the 80 people in attendance. The beverage is brewed in hand-made, silk pouches producing a tea that is, by all accounts, memorable. “Yes, it is wonderful,” said Melvalene Cohen, 92, and 40year member of the HHWC. “The tea may be my favorite part.” Marvelous Melvalene Cohen remembers the first Victorian Tea held at the clubhouse a decade ago. “The group was very small, and only three of us wore Victorian hats,” she said. ”Today, we fill up the building and

Question:

With the change in interest rates and the fluctuation in the numbers for housing sales, do you believe we truly are in a slump as some have determined or do you feel it is just our regular end of the year slow down. Do you pedict any changes in the rental market as well? Why do you feel this way?

“The Fed interest rate increase was expected and my clients locked in their interest rates prior to the hike. The complaining will come though with the next wave of buyers but they need to remember these are historically low rates and the consumer is still in the enviable position to purchase more house than expected. The housing market inside the loop is experiencing a slow down. It is typical at this time of the year but I strongly suspect there are some other underlying issues. Oil prices are definitely causing uncertainty and consumers do not purchase houses when they are not confident. I have talked with some Oil Company Executives and they have told me to expect a year more of this barring any unexpected circumstances. Having said that though, there are still plenty of people in that industry who will have to purchase a home so it will definitely not come to a standstill. And although a good percentage of buyers are in this field, Houston is a vibrant, international city with relocation clients coming from other pro-

fessions. Also there is a significant amount of Baby Boomers who are down sizing. The Inside Loop market has boomed in the last two years and the general public thinks we are still in that mode. The market is correcting itself as any healthy market should. Sellers are discovering they are unable to get the listing prices they expected and are either reducing or actually withdrawing from the market, waiting to see if the Spring Market is stronger. The Luxury market (any house over $750,000) has been the hardest hit. We have definitely shifted to a buyers market at thistime. The rental market also reflects inflated expectations from a landlord’s point of view. The rental market did sustain these high rents previously. That too has shifted. Those landlords are reducing too if they want to rent their properties.”

more than 75 percent are in Victorian costumes or hats. The party is more and more fun each year.” The food is also a highlight of the HHWC’s Victorian Tea. In keeping with Victorian tradition, “High Tea” treats are passed among those in attendance on three-tiered trays. First come the savory treats, followed by the sweets. All are lovingly hand-made in the kitchens of HHWC members in quantities to serve more than 100. Several food items have emerged as favorites over time. Of the savory treats, Ms. Cohen’s coveted cucumber-dill sandwiches are a star. Among the sweets, Heights resident and author Anne Sloan’s traditional sponge cake excels. In keeping with the Dickens theme, Marilyn Brown, director of the “Houston Coalition

for the Homeless,” was this year’s guest speaker. Brown shared uplifting stories of her ageny’s success in helping the homeless in our community, as well as ways individuals can assist those less fortunate. All agreed - Brown’s speech was inspirational. “The entire event is sort of securing a legacy for the club,” said Barbara Brown. “Life today is so rushed. With the Victorian tea, we take this time each year to stop, and appreciate the holiday. We stop to appreciate the beautiful silverware, fine china, the recipes and traditions from our collective heritage. And we take a moment to appreciate our friends.”

Neighbors: Local businesses head out to show the meaning of Christmas By Elizabeth Villareal elizasgarden@outlook.com

Yard Decoration Contest Mangum Manor’s winner of the 2015 Holiday Yard Decoration for Section 1 goes to 4919 Poinciana, the home of Francisco and Darlene Blasco. We are told they really captured that 70’s vibe with the Peanuts Christmas theme, and Frank did the lawn art himself. Congrats to Frank & Darlene! The Oak Forest Women’s Group hosted the 2015 Deck the Oaks Decorating Contest in Oak Forest and the judging took place last weekend. The winners are: Best of Show - 5611 Hewitt; Outstanding Lights - 1447 Curtin; Most Creative - 1364 Chippendale; Over the Top - 1326 Thornton; Spirit of the Season - 1726 Latexo; and Best Block – 1400-1500 Woodcrest (between Piney Woods and Oak Forest Dr.). Christmas Charity Drive Our entire Leader community of neighborhoods is full of giving and caring neighbors. Area Scout Troops, churches and schools organize yearly holiday food and toy drives and it’s a wonderful thing – a blessing for both those giving and those receiving. neighbors, raised funds; bought food, cooked it and distributed it; and donated and collected toys, nonperishable food items, toys and necessities for needy families, as well as food, toiletries and clothing to distribute to the homeless. Millirons came up with Smiles for the Holidays and Smiles for the Holidays on the Streets, two worthy endeavors which brought donations raining in from neighbors throughout the Leader community. Millirons said, “Thank you all for everything. You all have done many things either by donating, participating or simply by being loyal friends and it is all appreciated. And now we all get to share in the giving of Christmas because many of you folks donated.” Gifts and holiday treats will be delivered to the adopted families on Christmas Eve and MANNA will be accepting new, unwrapped toys through Dec. 19th. Families were identified through local schools and MANNA. Millirons continued, “My family was on the other end once before, needing donated gifts for Christmas, and (I know that) many single mothers in our area are just getting by. I love this neighborhood and this is my way of giving my thanks.” “For Smiles for the Holidays on the Streets, we will be hitting the streets of downtown Houston next Tuesday and donating gifts, clothes, and care packages to the needy and homeless. Anybody can volunteer. There are about 40 people

going with me on the street donating shoes, blankets, hoodies and care packages. And many are bringing their teenagers for life lessons.” Holding four toy drives on recent rainy weekends with help from Mytiburger, Animal

oud snoring by itself is only a social problem. If the person that sleeps with the snorer can tolerate the noise, then there is no concern. If, however, the snoring is accompanied by periods of time when the person stops breathing completely, then the snorer may have a serious medical condition known as obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related, breathing disorder in which nasal and oral airflow ceases completely despite continued efforts by a person’s diaphragm to inhale air. The airflow is blocked by the base of the tongue and/or the soft palate falling back against the back and sides of the throat when the person is asleep and the muscles are relaxed. The more the person tries to inhale, the tighter the seal becomes in the throat. Finally, the oxygen concentration in the brain falls to such a low level that the person will arouse from their sleep enough to gasp for air. The oxygen level will momentarily rise, the person will relax again, and the obstructive sleep apnea cycle will begin again. This can happen over and over, sometimes hundreds of times each night. The continued interruption of one’s sleep and the constant fluctuation in the oxygen level in the body can have very significant health risks. Excessive daytime sleepiness is common and can cause car wrecks and poor job performance. Hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, impotence, gastric reflux and depression are all associated with OSA. It is a serious medical condition, often undiagnosed, that needs treatment. Prepared as a public service to promote better dental health. From the office of: Chase Baker, D.D.S., 3515 Ella Blvd., 713-682-4406.

MESSAGE OF THE WEEK

VaRiationS of the GolDen Rule

A

ll of the world’s major religions espouse some form of the golden rule. In fact, almost every society and code of ethics has some version of what is referred to as the ethics of reciprocity. Christianity states this rule positively, i.e., “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Confucius stated the rule negatively, i.e., “Do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself. The fact that the Golden Rule is essentially universal, speaks volumes about its importance to good human relations and the maintenance of harmony, among both individuals and nations. It also says something about the inherent selfishness of human beings, that we must be reminded so often of how we would feel, if treated in the way we are treating others. Individuals or nations which fail to honor this most fundamental of rules will inevitably become pariahs. The immoral version of the golden rule, which counsels one to harm others before they have the chance to harm you, is clearly a recipe for strife and dissension. So, we should keep the golden rule always before us and strive to keep its counsel. Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

A big book drive for Helms is successful By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Thanks to the generosity of the surrounding community, each Helms Elementary student got to take home a book to keep that they can read and enjoy over the holiday break. The seeds for this giveaway were planted by Cynthia Clark, a Helms parent who also volunteers her time reading to other Helms students. In chatting with one of the students, Clark asked her what her favorite book at home was to read. When the student replied that she had one book in her home library – and when school librarian Karla Hardin

confirmed that the same was likely true for many students – Clark got to work. “That was unacceptable for me,” she said. First Clark reached out to the parents on the Heights Kids listserv. “There are a lot of great people there who are invested in the community,” said Clark. She also reached out to her realtor Anthony Bianchi and to Village Heights, a church that is closely aligned with Helms. Since Helms is a dual language school with a big Spanish focus for the lower grades, Clark requested books primarily in Spanish. The response was overwhelming. One woman put Clark in touch with a Scholastic FACE, or Family and Community Engagement representative, enabling Clark to buy their books at a discount to give away to send home with children. “In just six weeks I received about 100 Spanish books on my door step, and close to $2,300 in cash,” wrote Clark in her thank you e-mail. With the $2,300, Clark used $1,114 to buy 300 books from Scholastic and $1,175 to buy another 165 different titles from Amazon. And the books just kept coming in. One Helms parent who had another child attend-

Vineyard Church 1035 East 11th Street, Houston, TX 77009 Sundays 10 & 11:30am www.houstonvineyard.org The changing multicultural landscape of Houston, and our desire to be faithful witnesses, is opening our eyes more and more to a key message of Jesus Christ: reconciliation. Reconciliation between races, cultures, generations, and economic levels is needed now as much as any time in history. This has deep implications for the church and our lives. At Vineyard Church of Houston, we are being intentional and purposeful in responding to that message, growing into a church that reflects the diversity of our urban center and communicates the message: God values everyone.

ing River Oaks Elementary told that community about the Helms project. They held a book drive too and donated all 600 of the books received to Helms. On Friday, Dec. 18, the books were distributed to Helms students. Clark was on hand to help the students make their selections as was Helms parent Nadia Heffernan. “It was interesting to see what the kids were into,” said Clark, who was earnestly trying to interest a fourth grader in Charlotte’s Web before he gravitated to a book about space.

Other sought after books were Rainbow Fairies, Captain Underpants, Dork Diaries and Percy Jackson. Helms Elementary Principal John Baker said the book drive was a great, and timely, thing for the school’s students. “Anything we can do to get the kids reading,” he said. “With the vacation, they will have all this time to read.” The holiday drive was such a success, Clark plans to do it again at the school year’s end. “If you would like to donate or participate or join forces, please get in touch,” she said.

Christmas reminds us to come as you are. Rev. Robert P. Golsby St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church For the Christmas episode of The Big Bang Theory sitcom this year, the writers of the show had taken their inspiration from one of – if not the most – famous of all Christmas-time movies: It’s a Wonderful Life. If you have seen the movie, you know that it is based on Jimmy Stewart’s character of a man who thought his life had no meaning and that the world would have been no different had he not been born. He is then shown what the world would have looked like without his being born, and to say the least, he was quite surprised to see the great meaning and significance of his life. So the writers of the hottest sitcom on television took their inspiration from this movie. To give a little background, especially if you have never seen The Big Bang Theory, it is show based on the social lives of, well, some of the most brilliant and astute young men in the fields of science, superheroes, and comic books. In other words, it’s a show about nerds. The show centers greatly on the obsessive compulsive disordered genius, Sheldon Cooper – Dr. Sheldon Cooper – who insists on his own way based on his own logic and world perception, which is highly scientifically empirical and therefore supersedes human emotion or human reason. As a result, he’s pretty much an annoying headache to the people around him. His roommate and closest friends are continually getting caught up in Sheldon’s eccentricities as his demands that his own personal habits must be yielded to by his friends – Sheldon is intentionally controlling of his favorite place on the sofa, what meals he eats depending on the day of the week, Saturday night laundry, and a fiercely regimented bathroom schedule. Sounds like the ideal

roommate, right? In the Christmas episode, Sheldon goes back home to east Texas to welcome the arrival of his sister’s baby. While he was out of town, his all but plutonic girlfriend, Amy, takes the opportunity to challenge Sheldon’s friends to realize how none of them would know each other had it not been for knowing Sheldon. The rest of his buddies would never have met and become friends. The two couples who fell in love, one of them being married, would never have met. They make fun of Sheldon and complain eternally about his annoying habits and lack of social graces, but their happiness- without them giving it much thought – is very much attributable to their annoying, nerdy best friend. A good lesson perhaps for all of us, that the least likely of people in our lives may just have the greatest impact on our happiness. Now there is no Jim Parsons or Jimmy Stewart character in the Christmas narrative – but like these stories of human interaction and dependency, the narrative of God’s coming to us as a vulnerable infant is very human. The plight of Joseph and Mary, a baby born in harsh and dangerous circumstances – to the mother and child both – is a harrowing ordeal. Why would God choose to enter humanity in such a way? If you or I were God, would we choose to become human in such a way? Most likely not. Most of us would choose to be American with all the amenities that make our lives easy. We would choose a large home a nice car, money in the bank, rewarding employment; status, respect, wealth, power and influence, etcetera, etcetera. Or would we choose poverty, danger, homelessness, outcast status, vulnerability – etcetera, etcetera. Again, most of us would choose the “good” life. So why would God come to us under these most precarious of circumstances? The an-

swer, I believe, lies in the heart of God’s love and compassion for humanity. When we suffer, God suffers too. When our hearts are broken, God’s heart is broken too. I think part of the difficulty we have in better understanding the magnificence of the nativity story, is partly that, one, we have heard the story so often that perhaps it has become rote for us; and second, we may have difficulty imagining the holy family outside the context of the Bible. Playwright and novelist Dorothy Sayers believed strongly that the reason why people could not see the drama in the gospel was because they saw Jesus and his disciples living in the Bible or in the stained glass windows of churches. In her essay “Nativity Play” she writes, “But they did not live in the Bible; they lived in this confused and passionate world, amid social and political conditions curiously like those of the present day. Unless we can recapture a strong apprehension of that plain fact, they will forever remain for us an assemblage of wraiths and shadows.” I think she makes a good point. Like the story of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and even silly portrayals of such in a Thursday evening sitcom, these biblical stories are stories of humanity; the human struggle to find fulfillment, meaning, and joy. The conquering of those things that threaten our finding of such fulfillment and joy has been part of our

history from the beginning. Our problem in finding such fulfillment lies in the fact that we continue to look in all the wrong places to fill that void. We look to our own merit and our own achievements to find fulfillment. We have bought into the human tendency to believe that material and monetary wealth will satisfy us and bring us true happiness. Perhaps this is the reason God chose to enter the world as a poor, homeless infant to peasant Jews. Perhaps material and monetary wealth are traps – or worse, lies that we continually believe will eventually satisfy us, make us happy, make us less anxious and frustrated, eventually, bring us fulfillment. I am sure that you have experienced this many times in your life: you walk into a store – any store – clothing, home goods, shoes, whatever; and an associate approaches you and says “can I help you find anything?” And your canned reply is, “No, just looking.” Particularly if I am shopping with my wife, this is certainly my response; and I say it with meaning! But aren’t we all looking for something? I remember a priest, long ago before I became a priest myself, saying on Christmas Eve, “what brought you here tonight? What are you looking for?” The Rev. Anjel Scarborogh writes, “When we think about the birth of Christ beyond the biblical story of what happened and consider why it happened, it leads us

GETHSEMANE LUTHERAN CHURCH 4040 Watonga • 713-688-5227 Rev. John Cain, Pastor

back to the question, “Did you find what you were looking for?” Perhaps you haven’t considered that question in this context, but do so for just a moment. You are here, in this church, on Christmas. Why did you come? You didn’t have to come, you know. Maybe some here are attending church on Christmas because it’s part of your family tradition; or maybe it was to appease parents or grandparents; or maybe some of you are just accustomed to regularly attending church. But regardless of why you think you are here, ponder in your heart for a moment what you are really seeking, because perhaps something deeper brought you here. What are you really looking for? If we are honest, we all have a deep longing – a sense of something missing in our lives; some nagging feeling that we are incomplete, lacking, unfulfilled. We humans are consciously aware of our fragility, our finitude, our faults and our failings. It is a fearful thing to acknowledge this truth. Most of us spend our lives running away from this stark reality by attempting to fill this hole in our soul with anything that promises to fulfill or fix us.” In this night, the real people that were Joseph and Mary were scared to death. They had no place to go as Mary was getting dangerously close to giving birth. No doctors. No midwife. No alternate plan or safety net. This young couple was on their own. But they were faithful and remained

steadfast in their trust in God. Surely they had doubts – we all do. But they are models for us. “Mary treasured all these things in her heart” to what Susanna Metz writes, “I’m sure she treasured the lovely things, the joy of the shepherds, the visit of the kings, the birth of her beloved Child. But she also treasured the troubling things, the questions, the fear, the tensions—she held them in her soul, dealing with them with courage and faith. If we could just do the same. If we could hold the lives of others in our own hearts, be concerned about women who give birth in desperate situations, in cold, unsafe places, in war areas, or wrapped in the fear of violence, we might learn to see as God sees, to love as God loves. We might learn how better to treasure many things in our hearts and let those treasures teach us to be more human.” No matter what your life circumstances are this day, God called you here to speak a word of eternal life and love to you: a love that you didn’t have to earn or prove yourself worthy to receive. God’s movement is toward us and for us in the birth of Jesus Christ. For whatever reason you did come this night: I’m glad you did. Come with your questions and doubts. Come with your fear and anxiety. Come as you are; as the very human person God breathed into being. And rejoice. For to you is born this day, a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.

Think twice before giving pets as holiday gifts For the Leader Many people consider pets great holiday gifts. But in spite of their popularity as presents, pets do not always make the most appropriate holiday gift. Giving a pet as a present seems like a great idea, but shoppers might want to give it more consideration before giving a gift that is such a considerable responsibility. A puppy at Christmas or a bunny at Easter may be given with good intentions, but that well-meaning sentiment can easily backfire, ending with the pet being given up for adoption when recipients don’t feel up to the task of raising a pet. In such instances, the companion animal pays the steepest price. Though it often is, buying a pet should not be an impulse purchase. You see sad eyes looking back at you from behind a cage door and want to give that animal a new home. However, introducing an animal into a family is not a decision to take lightly. You must factor how well the pet will fit in with the family dynamic. Do schedules allow for quality time spent with the animal? Is it a financially good time to care for an animal that will

cost money? Are you aware of how long the pet will live? Making those big decisions for a person on the receiving end of your well-intentioned gift may be crossing a line. Would you want to have such a lifechanging decision made for you? Furthermore, the holiday season is not one ideally suited for making careful decisions. People are often swept up in emotions and even stress, and shoppers may not be thinking rationally. The hectic nature of the holiday season can be a difficult time for a pet to grow acclimated to its new environment. He or she may be frightened to assimilate or take longer to settle down. Pets often need several weeks

of quiet and constant care to become comfortable in their new environments. Here are some other reasons why the holidays are not a good time for new pets. * Holiday visitors may frighten the new pet and he or she may become weary of strangers at the outset. * The activities in the household may pose safety hazards for the young animal. An abundance of rich foods and various decorations could be ingested, potentially causing illness. * New pets should be carefully supervised around children to see how they behave. A child may not be accustomed to handling a puppy or kitten and could injure the animal. Similarly, the pet may be skittish and lash out at the child. Adults busy with holiday obligations may be easily distracted and miss how their child is interacting with the new pet. * Once the glow of the holidays wear off, children may be disillusioned with the new responsibility that has fallen into their hands. They may not like the responsibility that comes with being a good pet owner. Reputable pet breeders and

Pet of the week Meet Memphis. This Rottweiler-mix was named after a character in the movie, “Gone In Sixty Seconds” because he’ll steal your heart in a minute! Memphis was found roaming the streets and picked up by BARC. His luck changed when a rescue group bailed him out. Now, all that’s missing is his new beginning. Does your home (and heart) have room for this sweet gentleman? If so, contact Scout’s Honor at: info@scoutshonor.org.

animal shelters often discourage individuals from adopting or purchasing pets as holiday gifts. Many organizations and animal businesses require a careful vetting of potential pet parents to ensure the animal will be placed with a family and in a home that is suitable. Animal welfare groups warn that an estimated 50 percent of pets adopted during the holidays end up right back at shelters. This can scar the pet. Avoid the temptation of giving a companion animal as a present. If it is your intention to gift an animal, talk to the gift recipient and discuss the pros and cons beforehand. Then you can work together and make the right decision for all parties involved, including the pet.
