After a three year delay, the Physician Specialty Center at 1900 North Loop West between Ella and T.C. Jester is open for business, or at least a portion of it is. There are offices open on the first through fifth floors of the six story building with additional office space still being constructed on the fifth and sixth floors. The entire structure offers 19,850 square feet and LoopNet lists the rental rate as $23 per square foot a year as a minimum. Parking will be free of charge in the parking lot and the three-level garage. Tenants on the exterior sign for Physician Specialty Center include Memorial Herman Endoscopy Center, GI Specialists of Houston, LLP, Coastal Eye Associates and Solis Mammography. Melody Dickerson chose nursing as a career in high school, after being hospitalized following a car accident. Today, she’s a master’s-degreed registered nurse, a certified professional in healthcare quality and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital. “After my accident I realized I had a calling to improve patient care, said Dickerson, who has been a nurse since 1995 and, as CNO, leads efforts to ensure that patients receive top-notch care. “At the heart of nursing is our desire to serve our patients and help them physically, emotionally and spiritually during a tough time in their lives. No one wants to be in the hospital unless it’s to have a baby. Our job as healers is to make the hospital experience as comfortable as possible. The nurses who go a step further and advocate for their patients are exceptional. Ways to fend off holiday stress Out of breath? By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
One of my favorite quotes about Christmas, although it is applicable to the holiday season at large, is from the great Garrison Keillor: “A lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together. That doesn’t mean the holidays aren’t wonderful, but they can be stressful too. Here are five categories of holiday stress relief with reader tips to help you relax a little bit in the weeks to come. 1.) Kick back and enjoy some entertainment Leader reader Carol McLean is right to say she avoids the nightly news during the holiday season. A holiday vibe can easily be rebooted by watching a favorite movie. My favorite is Will Ferrell in Elf or Nicolas Cage in The Family Man. Selena Crochet prefers unwinding with a glass of wine and a classic Christmas movie like Love, Actually, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation or White Christmas. “One of those is a classic, at least, Crochet said. Lesley Goodman attended Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold which runs until December 28 2014 at Stages Repertory The-
atre, 3201 Allen Pkwy #101. “It’s absolutely hilarious,â€? she said. 2.) Holiday Cocktail anyone? More than one person mentioned their fondness for a glass of wine or a special cocktail during the season. Crochet’s favorite is EFFEN cucumber vodka mixed with Hubert’s Mango Lemonade and one drop of tabasco. Laurie Pitzer makes herself Oatmeal Cookies – which is not a cookie but equal parts Bailey’s, Butterscotch Schnapps, and Goldschläger, or any cinnamon schnapps, shaken and served over ice or straight up. “It’s a sipping cocktail, obviously,â€? Pitzer said. Alice David likes a little bit of Bailey’s in her coffee. “It’s especially good in decaf when I’m preparing dinner on a chilly night,â€? David said. 3.) Let a little steam off Exercise is a good stress reliever any time of year. Reader Julie Campbell does Imperium Crossfit, 1718 W 23rd St., three times a week while Toni Valle goes to VauLt Houston for aerial dance. “Nothing like being up in the air,â€? Valle said. Kelly Gerszewski practices prayer, yoga and meditation. Lorraine Cherry walks the trails at West 11th Street
New
Park. “The ½-mile loop trail has been newly resurfaced, so the trail is wide and dry,â€? Cherry said. Lesley Goodman commented that any class at the 43rd Street YMCA is good — “especially Night Club Cardio with Morgan Shields.â€? Selena Crochet also likes Shield’s BodyFlow class and Crossfit with Lori Reilly at the Y. 4.) Pamper yourself Don’t think of it as extra – think of it as maintenance. Kim Naiser uses her Young Living Essential Oils to do the trick. Alice David recently added the 10 minute neck massage at Ella Nails, 4208 Ella Blvd., while she got a manicure. “That was lovely! Pretty cheap too,â€? David said. Selena Crochet likes the message at Foot Reflexology, 4218 Ella Blvd., which many describe as a hidden gem in the GOOF. At Bliss Day Spa, 701 Shep-
herd Drive, #100, they offer Mimosa and Mani Sundays as well as BYOB (Bring Your Own Boy) Tuesdays, where men receive 10% off any service. 5.) Revel in the bling (and tunes) For many, driving or walking around a favorite neighborhood looking at the lights is a sure fire way to unwind. While River Oaks is worth the drive, there are many neighborhoods close to home that really do it up – like Shepherd Park Plaza, Shepherd Park Terrace, Candlelight Plaza and Woodland Heights. Holiday music is a must too. “I sing along to Christmas Carols to keep my mind off traffic while stuck in the car going event to event, activity to activity, said Jeny Burrell. The Houston Sacred Harp group held its annual gathering Saturday, Dec. 6, at Heights Church of Christ for a day of singing and a potluck meal. They also gather on the first Sunday of each month, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at Spring Woods Baptist Church, 10131 Emnora Lane. Sacred harp singing is arguably the oldest true American art form. The sound is raw and stirring, as opposed to being smooth and professional. It emanates from four-part harmony sung a cappella. The “sacred harp” is the human voice. Sacred harp is sometimes referred to as “fa-so-la” singing because singers do a preliminary runthrough of a song using the notes of the scale rather than lyrics. The sacred harp music tradition almost died out, but is now experiencing a revival in interest, boosted by the soundtrack of the movie Cold Mountain.

According to Ron Bernucho, a member of Houston Sacred Harp, the leader (known as the “pitcher”) in sacred harp selects the key in which the song will be sung, a “key of convenience,” based on the vocal ranges of the singers, who sit in a “hollow square” formation. The formation is a time-honored tradition, with “sides” based on
the four harmonic parts. The leader stands in the center of the square, facing the tenors, who carry the melody. Male and female voices sing tenor, with the women singing an octave above the men. The other three parts in sacred harp singing are bass, alto, and treble. For more information, about Houston Sacred Harp

Trinity Lutheran School students spread holiday cheer for students at Bruce Elementary School Seventh and eighth grade students from Trinity Lutheran School helped pass out backpacks filled with toys and books at Bruce Elementary as part of Volunteer Houston’s Discovery Day with A Visit from Saint Nicholas Program. The event promotes generosity and community involvement, and volunteers from various corporations and community organizations read the historical version of the Saint Nicholas story and complete a small community service project. “Imparting the lesson of community service is vital to any age group, said Lisa Jakel, Director of Development for Trinity Lutheran School. “Our seventh and eighth graders enjoyed watching the students open their presents, working with them on their service projects, and learning about the true meaning of the season.

Helping local pets is a ‘SNAP’ away By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader
How many times have you driven down Ella Blvd., Yale, Main (or fill in the blank) and noticed a mangy, free-roaming dog? How often have you wondered why whomever owns of that skinny, beat-up cat on your block, doesn’t feed it enough? The fact is, humans domesticated cats about 3,000 years ago, and dogs, about 10,000 years ago. In that time, we have allowed them to breed at a rate greater than we can care for them, leaving many without homes. How many unwanted pets are there in Houston? “It’s really hard to determine that, because most of the area shelters will not release numbers on the animals they kill each year, Laura Walsh, Director of Development for the Houston’s Spay-Neuter Assistance Program, or SNAP, said. “A safe estimate would place the number at 70 or 75,000 pets a year - or about 226 a day are put to death. SNAP has been an active member of the Heights community for 14 years. The agency’s mission is to to prevent

the suffering and death of cats and dogs due to overpopulation and preventable diseases, especially in low-income areas. SNAP neuters about 37,000 pets annually. “Our vision at SNAP is A world where there are no homeless dogs and cats, Walsh said. “and the first step to a no-kill world, is no births. The program offers male neutering for $35 and female spaying for $55, as well as basic wellness care, saving community members sometimes hundreds of dollars. Additionally, SNAP offers these services free of charge to families on government assistance, thus removing the financial obsta-

cle to responsible pet ownership. SNAP also has a mobile surgical truck to help get their services to areas where people may rely on public transport, which will not allow pets. “We have started targeting areas with large numbers of feral cat colonies, or ‘community cats,’ as we call them, Walsh said. “We took our mobile spay and neuter truck and neutered 18,000 cats in the 77087 zip code alone. Notably, these cats, sometimes called Trap-NeuterRelease, or TNR, are easy to identify. Male or female, the tip of the left ear is removed in the last step of the surgery. “I donate to SNAP whenever I can, and volunteer as much

Who is Taking Care of Whom?
Historically, dogs and cats have been our constant companions that we have cared for, but what have we gotten in return? Dogs obviously are great for security as police, military or guard dogs and even a tiny Chihuahua will sound the alarm that sends a burglar elsewhere. There are even search and rescue dogs, bomb and drug detectors and even cancer snifďƒžng dogs. Seeing eye and other disability assist dogs help many people to better lives. Cats and dogs help keep unwanted guests out of our homes. Snakes, skunks, rats, bats and other wildlife are kept at bay to protect us from Rabies, Leptospirosis and other dangers. More importantly pets offer constant companionship and greater overall health. Studies show that pets drop our blood pressure and stress hormones. They improve our immunity and chances of surviving heart attacks or other debilitating diseases. They inspire us to get off the couch for a brisk walk or healthy exercise and play. Pets make us more social and give us a purpose in life because they remind us how to care for and love others, no matter what.

future, to be able to make custom suits, but that requires materials like fabric, machines and other things so I’m not in a position to start something like that now. Riadi called working with clothing his passion, and has experience working with dresses, menswear and all kinds of other dresses, coats and ties. Part of his biggest motivation has been the feeling that comes with people who are thrilled withhis work. “I love what I do, Riadi said. “It’s not just for the money. A lot of people keep coming back and we’re getting some new customers. The reception has all been very positive. It makes people happy to get something fixed quickly. While Riadi said he has never owned a business in the US, the older tailor called it a “learning experience. “I’m kind of going slowly and I know next year will be much easier for me, Riadi said. George Riadi, manager of Chris’ Alterations and Dry Cleaning on 1765 West 34th St., has been in the business of clothes since he was 8 years old. The 61-year-old business owner has worked from the lower end of clothing to the higher end, and first began working in factories and other establishments while living in Israel. He has been living in the US for more than 30 years, and recently began managing Chris’ Alterations several months ago. “Chris Balat, the original owner, is actually my brotherin-law, Riadi said. “That’s part of the reason why I kept the name. The other reason is the recognition. People have been coming to Chris’ Alterations and Dry Cleaning for many of their clothing needs, and the establishment offers dry cleaning, laundry and professional alterations for clothing like suits. “I don’t make any suits yet, although I am a tailor, Riadi said. “My intention is, in the

as my time allows, Heights resident Ria van Dright said. She has been volunteering in animal welfare for 11 years, and is highly regarded by all. “It is important to me because I think the way to stop the overwhelming numbers of intake of unwanted pets in shelters, is to stop the birth of them in the first place. The SNAP Wellness Center is located at 1801 Durham Drive, Suite 1. On Saturday, Dec. 6, THE LEADER celebrated its 60th birthday with a community event that entertained more than 700 people and gave children a chance to eat a hamburger, play in the snow, pet live animals, jump on moon walks and even visit with Santa. THE LEADER was able to make this a free event for families only because of local businesses that supported us and, in turn, supported the people in our community. We’d like to thank our major sponsors one more time.

ortunately — or unfortunately — you no longer have any problems with your upper teeth. They were all removed some years ago and you now wear a full upper denture. Does this mean you can forget about visiting your dentist regularly? Not if you value your health and future comfort! Regular appointments with the dentist are as important for denture-wearers as for people with natural teeth. The mouth tissue, bony ridges and gums that support dentures are constantly undergoing changes and may impair the dacentures’ proper function. Even such general health ailments as vitamin deficiencies, extended illness, drug therapy, weight loss, diabetes or high blood pressure can change the way dentures fit. Ill-fitting dentures can seriously damage the mouth, causing abrasions, bruises, inflammation and rapid destruction of the supporting bone. Prolonged irritation of this kind may result in the development of tumors. It is important to have a dental checkup at least once a year to insure that your dentures are properly adjusted and that your mouth is in good health.
Prepared as a public service to promote better dental health. From the office of: Chase Baker, D.D.S., 3515 Ella Blvd., 713-682-4406.
