Carr’s train brings joy to the neighborhood by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

Lifelong Heights resident and civic leader Paul Carr, and his wife, Mary, were traveling through the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri last summer, when they noticed a wooden train in a park. Carr, 74, decided it would be a good idea to put a similar train in Donovan Park -- a Houston Heights Association-owned park at Heights Blvd. and 7th St. -- so neighborhood kids could enjoy it. Carr spent all of his spare time and $4,000 in tools and materials to build the five-car wooden train, along with the tracks out of 100 percent treated lumber. “I can’t say how great it makes me feel,” Carr said. “Once I saw the train in Missouri, I thought ‘I’ve got the skill and knowledge’. I couldn’t find an excuse not to build the train.” Last Sunday, Carr and a half-

dozen volunteers from the Heights Association assembled the train in the park, and about 24 kids began playing on it shortly after it was put together. “It thrilled me to watch the kids enjoy it,” Carr said. “That was the payoff. It’s our Christmas gift to the kids.” Carr, who is retired from the Houston Fire Department, was instrumental in helping the Heights Association buy the park in 1982. If the Association hadn’t bought it, it was set to become a truck repair site. The park is named for James Donovan, father of longtime Heights philanthropist and business owner Marcella Perry. The train fits in perfectly with the park, which has a railroad theme. Many years ago, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad ran nearby the park. In 1996, Anne Culotta of the

Heights Association spearheaded an effort to build a playground at the park, one of two Heights Association-owned parks, along with Marmion Park at Heights and 18th. Carr is the caretaker of both parks, and he also built a 4.5 mile jogging trail that bears his name as well as the Gazebo on Heights Blvd. between 10th and 11th streets.

Former SPX coach reflects on ‘93 football title by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

At the time, Dr. Mike Jackson knew he was fortunate to be the head coach of two state championship football teams before he turned 25. But two decades later, it seems even more amazing to the 44year-old former St. Pius X football coach. Jackson, now the head football coach and athletic director at La Marque High in Galveston County, led St. Pius X to the ninth of its 12 state football championships in 1993. The game was held at Baylor University’s Floyd Casey Stadium, and the final score resulted in a 26-26 tie. According to the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, it was a co-championship with Addison Trinity Christian. The state of Texas didn’t add overtime to high school football until

1997. Jackson had the opportunity to return to Pius last fall, with the Panthers upsetting his La Marque Cougars, 17-14, on a last-second field goal by SPX junior Sam Vitulli. It marked the first home loss for Jackson, who coached the Panthers from 1993-95. “When we played over there this year, it flooded back a lot of memories,” Jackson said. “When they were doing the announcements, they acknowledged (the ’93 state championship) even though I was coaching against them that night.” Jackson, who graduated from C.E. King High in northeast Houston, became a head football coach at age 22 and won a state championship at Shiner St. Paul in 1991. That title helped him get the opportunity to coach Pius. “I was only 24, but it was my third year as a head coach,” Jackson said. “We had a very young staff at Pius. I don’t think we had a

coach who was in his 30s. We had a bunch of hard working guys that wanted to make their mark.” The Panthers finished 9-1 in the regular season with their only loss coming against Second Baptist. Jimmy Devlin, the TAPPS Class 3A Player of the Year who’s now president of Digisonics Inc., a medical technology company in Houston, was the team’s star running back. He helped lead the Panthers to a 27-23 win over Strake Jesuit. St. Pius X defeated TAPPS perennial power Fort Worth Nolan in the state semifinals. The teams tied at 14, but SPX crossed midfield more times than Nolan did, which was the criteria for determining a winner prior to the implementation of overtime. Greg Bonnett was the Panthers’ quarterback, and he threw four touchdown passes in the state championship game. He finished with 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions on the season.

Jackson, who’s now married with two children, stays in touch with some of his former SPX players via Facebook. Craig Curry, a tight end and defensive lineman who now teaches English in Ridgefield, Wash. enjoyed playing for Jackson. “He was a really intense guy,” Curry said. “He had a vision for what he wanted for his team. He never doubted what we could accomplish and what he could accomplish. He provided the structure for us to improve.” Jackson left SPX after the 1995 season to accept the head coach position at Robstown, a 4A school near Corpus Christi. He earned a doctorate and La Marque head football coach Mike Jackson, 44, was 24 years old when he briefly served as an administra- guided St. Pius X to a co-state championship in 1993. STH wrestler in the fast ‘Lane’ by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com St. Thomas High senior Mason Lane has been a winner on the football field and wrestling mat. Lane, 18, was a two-year starter at center for the Eagles, who went 20-3 the past two seasons and won consecutive district championships. The southwest Houston resident began wrestling as a freshman to get ready for football. “I fell in love with the sport, so I kept doing it,” Lane said. Lane is a fourthgeneration St. Thomas High student. He finished second at the Mason Lane TAPPS Championships the past two seasons -- at 195 pounds as a sophomore and then at 220 pounds as a junior. Last season, he finished second at the state preps tournament -- a compilation of the best private school wrestlers in Texas. He competed in the national championships last season in Lehigh, Pennsylvania. “It was like nothing I’d ever seen before,” Lane said. The Eagles will compete in a dual tournament next weekend in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com Coaches and referees too often don’t understand each other’s perspective, but former Waltrip High head football coach Anthony Zuccarini is one of the few who can relate to both sides. “I think every coach should have to referee or go through some kind of officiating training,” Zuccarini said. Zuccarini, a 56-year-old Oak Forest resident, kept his whistle, but he’s using it as a referee, not as a coach, these days. “If I went back into coaching, I’d know a lot more,” said Zuccarini, who coached at Waltrip from 1981 to 2011, including 20 years as the head coach. “There are things the refs don’t look at. Wherever the play’s going is what they’re going to concentrate on.” Zuccarini retired from coaching and teaching after the 2011 season. He said the role of a referee is less time consuming. “When the clock hits four zeros, I get to go home -- no washing clothes, driving a bus, or visiting a hospital,” Zuccarini said. “I still get my football fix, but I can get home before 2 a.m.” Every week, referees are tested with 20 different scenarios that could arise in a game. “It’s amazing the things that (actually) come up in games,” Zuccarini said. Being an official, Zuccarini can tell that it’s more productive to do a better job coaching players than wasting time and energy “yelling and screaming” at the officials. In his first season as an referee, Zuccarini officiated a state playoff game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington between Ennis and Frisco, as well as the St. Pius X-La Marque regular season game in September. He opted out of a Waltrip-Milby game last month and has turned down any chances to officiate Waltrip games. Zuccarini has been officiating basketball and lacrosse for the past decade, and when he retired from Waltrip, an officials coordinator asked him about the possibility of doing football. He thought it was a good idea, and gave it a try. Zuccarini is also certified to officiate volleyball but said that football, basketball and lacrosse keep him busy for now. The former Waltrip coach grew up in Donora, Pa. -- a steel mill town 17 miles south of Pittsburgh and the hometown of baseball legends such as Stan Musial, Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. He played against NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana, from nearby Monongahela, Pa., in high school. “He was a better pitcher than a quarterback -- he

Oak Forest resident Anthony Zuccarini, who coached at Waltrip High from 1981 to 2011, is now a football official. (Photo by Michael Sudhalter) could have been a Hall of Famer in baseball,” Zuccarini said. Zuccarini moved to Houston in the late 1970s for teaching and coaching opportunities. He started at Hamilton Middle School and soon moved over to Waltrip where he coached football, baseball, golf, basketball and just about “everything except soccer.” He’s lived in Oak Forest since the early 1980s and enjoys the small town atmosphere -- something he grew up with in western Pennsylvania. “I like it because it’s like a little town,” Zuccarini

said. “I go to church here, shop here, go to the doctors and dentist here. Everything. Oak Forest is bigger than my hometown of Donora.” Zuccarini wouldn’t rule out a return to coaching but said it would be at a parochial school, due to the rules regarding the public school retirement program. However, he’s currently content with officiating, spending time with his family and remodeling his house.

What is your goal for this wrestling season? “I expected myself to win state in both prep and TAPPS this year. It’s going to take a lot of hard work and dedication.” What do you like about wrestling? “Not that many sports require the same amount of dedication. I like how it benefits me. In wrestling practice, you have to be really focused all the time, and that carries over into my studies.” Do you enjoy football or wrestling better? “I’m going to have to say football, because it’s my first love, and it’s what I played growing up.” How did you like playing football for STH? “We had a heartbreaking end of the season (a 20-14 overtime loss to Fort Worth Nolan). I still thought my senior class improved St. Thomas and helped the football program. It’s going to be really good from here on out.” Where will you go to college? “Texas A&M to study Industrial Distribution. Both of my parents, an uncle, an aunt, and tons of other family members graduated from A&M. I grew up going to A&M football games. I may join the club wrestling team at A&M.I’d love to be a part of that.

Reagan father-son duo find common ground in wrestling by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com Reagan High senior Fidel Aleman Jr. hopes to repeat as the district wrestling champion at 145 pounds. Aleman Jr., 18, credits a great deal of his success to his father, Fidel Aleman Sr., 40, a volunteer assistant with the Bulldogs’ wrestling program. “Every chance we get, we talk about wrestling,” Junior said. “We look up videos on how to improve. I like the whole (experience of wrestling) - the feeling of winning, the feeling of getting on the mat and wrestling.” Senior, a 1992 Reagan High

graduate, played baseball for the Bulldogs in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He didn’t know much about wrestling but has gradually learned more. “Wrestling has been the most challenging,” Senior said. “I don’t have experience in it. I took lessons in coaching wrestling and the ground game. It’s still a learning process for me.” Senior and his wife, Lorie, a 1993 Reagan graduate, have a combined family of six children. He worked at Dow Chemical for 13 years, before deciding to pursue a career in education. He’s currently the in-school suspension coordinator at Hogg Middle School, while he earns a teaching

credential. “If I can’t play, I’d like to give back and coach the sport,” said Senior, who also volunteers to coach football and baseball at Reagan. The wrestling team practices at Hogg, and Junior has a goal of reaching the state tournament in Austin this year, after narrowly missing it last season. “We wrestle at Hogg, because there’s more room there,” Junior said. Junior plans on studying criminal justice at Sam Houston State next season and may compete with the Bearkats’ club wrestling team. “If I’m free next year, come back and help out (with the Reagan team),” Junior said.

hat happened in the trenches a century ago stands out in the minds of some historians as one of the most astonishing Christmas stories in 2,000 years. One hundred years ago, soldiers from Britain and Germany were burrowed into trenches. Their respective countries were combatants in “the war to end all wars.” However, the men in trenches along a 100-mile front were sometimes so close to one another that they could hear one another’s voices. In the midst of the shooting, men on each side would call out to their enemy “You missed.” That’s how close some of the combatants were to enemy troops. Soldiers on each side had empathy for one another; men on each side were cold and weary and knew that the soldiers in the facing trenches faced the same miseries. Besides shared misery, the men on both sides brought with them to war their Christmas memories. The suffering of war, combined with the shared reverence of Christmas, were among the factors that made a Christmas truce possible. An estimated 100,000 men from both sides participated in the Christmas truce. Amazingly, it was spontaneous and disorganized. In some places, commanding officers ordered men under their command to remain in trenches, but elsewhere enemies shared good cheer and shook hands. Actually, “Christmas truce” describes a series of smaller truces. Up and down the frontlines, on Christmas Eve, a spontaneous spirit broke out. In some places, the truce was formal and involved officers. History is not clear, but the best sources suggest that the “Christmas truce” began when men on the German side began to decorate their positions with make-shift trees and ornaments and candles. As the truce got under way, enemy combatants exchanged gifts by meeting in the no-man’s land between the lines. What do we know about details? Most of the letters from soldiers mention some type of truce agreement, allowing time to bury dead who were lying in the no-man’s land, swapping jokes and gifts, singing songs and hymns together, and a mutual understanding as to when the truce would end. Whether there was a football game between German and British troops is a matter of controversy, but that story persists in the lore of the truce. A member of the Second Royal Welch Fusiliers described how the miracle truce came to an end on the morning of Dec. 26. After the men on each side had wished one another Merry Christmas from their parapets, they got back down in their trenches and the war resumed. In 1915, a British officer said in an interview “It is a great hope for future peace when two great nations hating each other as foes have seldom hated, one side vowing eternal hate and vengeance and setting their venom to music, should on Christmas day and for all that the word implies, lay down their arms, exchange smokes and wish each other happiness.” The last veteran of the Christmas truce of 1914 died in 2005 at the age of 109.

Las Posadas is a beautiful tradition where St. Rose of Lima PreK and Kindergarten classes reenact the journey of Mary and Joseph looking for shelter on the night of Christ’s birth. After being turned away and serenaded by first- and secondgraders, they found a home for baby Jesus in the church. (Submitted photo)
