It’s time for a beer or a cocktail at the end of a long day. Where to go? Some suggestions from Leader readers. Georgia Lister likes Fuego’s Saloon on Durham at Washington. “I’ll have any of their custom drinks infused with herbs and peppers,” she said. “Delicious food too.” Kristina Kane votes for La Griglia, 2002 W Gray St. “Lemon drop martinis, not in Garden Oaks, but close,” she said. Kane also is a fan of the Mojitos at Benjy’s, 5922 Washington Ave. Morgan Shields can be found at the Big Star Bar,

1005 W 19th St., partaking in a Moscow Mule. Kati Thompson is a fan of many of the cocktails at Down House, 1801 Yale St. “The Old Fashioned, Queen B (Broker’s Gin, lemon, sugar, house lavender tincture, dry champagne), Might As Well (Basil, cucumber, Citadelle Gin, house vanilla syrup, lime, orange), and Moscow Mule to name a few.” Laurie Pitzer said she came up with her own concoction at The Boot, 1206 W 20th St. “Deep Eddy Lemon vodka with soda, a splash of cranberry, and a lime. Chill, 3333 W 11th St. I just have them mix up something similar to what I mentioned above.” Southern Goods has reader Stella Stevens favorite libation. “The Texas Peach is my new favorite cocktail,” she said. Friday happy hours at Rainbow Lodge, 2011 Ella Blvd., are a favorite of Leah Salinas. “Also love happy hours at Cavatore, 2120 Ella Blvd. Their cosmos are so good and they have amazing appetizer specials.” For a deal, Rachel Ehrhardt heads to Hughie’s, 1802 W 18th St. for Texas Tuesday’s which offers all Texas beers for two dollars. Liz Johns shares another deal at Corkscrew, 1308 W 20th St where there’s $10 pizza and half off bottles of wine on Mondays.

Readers chime in on where to get fresh tortillas By Christina Martinez christina@theleadernews.com With the closing of the Fiesta on North Shepherd, I asked readers to tell me where they get their fresh tortillas. The emails I got all pointed to one local spot. Reader Maureen Hall writes in that Southern Goods on 19th St. has a new menu including a fajita plate. “It was very tasty and the tortillas were excellent,” she said. “I asked Lyle where he gets them. He uses El Bolillo, the bakery across from Canino’s on Airline. Seconding that is reader R.J. Trevino who said, “There is only one place that in my opinion has the best and freshest tortillas and this is El Bollio on Airline.”

are excluded). Just show your driver’s license to receive the discount. They recommend that you call ahead at (713) 227-2283 to reserve your spot as they can’t guarantee space. The folks at Pizzitola’s hope to see neighborhood groups, civic and homeowner associations take advantage of the deal for their meetings and get-togethers.

Craving some Cajun Cuisine? The first ever Black Restaurant Week, showcasing black owned eateries, concluded last week but that doesn’t mean you still can’t visit some of the showcased restaurants. One of them is Esther’s Cajun Cafe & Soul Food in the 5200 block of Yale. Leader reader Susan Kostelecky ate there on Saturday and had this to say: “I

can’t believe I had never heard of this place before. Highly recommend and it is BYOB.” Have a sweet tooth? Check out the Sweet Potato Maple Cheesecake on their Facebook page. Or their Peach Cobbler. Or their Banana Pudding. Hungry yet?
