Oak Forest Closet, located at Sojourn Oak Forest Church at 1216 Bethlehem St., is an organization that pro vides resources such as clothing for foster, adoptive, and kinship families in the central Houston area, accord ing to its website. Upon its completion, which Wilkinson said should be sometime next month, the room will be able to hold 5,000 pieces of cloth
Among those items included in the bond is about $8.8 mil lion tabbed for renovating health centers around the city, including Houston Health De partment’s West End Health Center, 190 Heights Blvd. District C Councilmember Abbie Kamin, in voting for the propositions, told the Leader that the bonds would provide funding for critical needs across the city, but that it’s not enough for all the important projects.

Three-tiered system complicates life for young distilleries
“A large chunk of the bond proposal pertains to public safety items, including fire and police stations,” she said. “The West End Health Center in Dis trict C is included in the bond for needed improvements and renovation. However, there con tinue to be unmet needs for our distric t that have not been ad dressed because they haven’t even made it onto the capital improvement plan, including West Grey Multi-Service Center.” Before the vote on the propo sitions, Kamin brought up that the multi-ser vice center, 1475 W. Gray St., needed about $9.5 million in upgrades that would, among other things, fix roof
Proponents of the sys tem argue it provides ben efits by making it harder to operate a black market system, increasing public health safety and gives smaller craft distilleries, like William Price, the chance to compete with larger corporations, ac cording to an article on the National Alcohol Beverage ControlHiller,Association.however, dis agreed with that assess ment.Essentially, the issue is that distilleries are forced to work through a distribu tor to earn space in a liquor store, Hiller explained. But there are a limited number of distributors in Texas, because it costs money to own a warehouse and other equipment needed to operate as one, he said. And distributors are working for several dif ferent distilleries at once, which means they might have more of an incen tive to sell someone else’s product, Hiller said. “The thing is, the law is archaic,” Hart explained in a conversation this week. “Beer laws are fleshed out and it all makes sense, and so is wine. But spirits un fortunately are the ones given the least attention Voters this November will de cide whether or not to approve $478 million in ballot proposi tions for the city of Houston – money from which would go toward projects across the city, including several in the local area. The city council this month signed off on calling for a series of ballot propositions totaling $478 million that would go to ward capital projects in seven different areas, including parks, public health facilities, waste, libraries, animal care and more, according to city documents.

Starting any business is difficult. But for those in trepid entrepreneurs seek ing to make it in the bur geoning whiskey industry, the climb toward success can be even more daunt ing.Bryan Clary and Zack Hiller, the co-owners of William Price Distilling Company, both figured the hardest times were behind them after they weathered a pandemic era opening, but an antiquated and con voluted state system in volving distilleries, distrib utors and stores has meant navigating forward has been anything but simple. “I can for sure see that light at the end of the tun nel,” Hiller said. “We’re growing, and as that hap pens, I can hire more staff and help us grow faster… A year ago, I might not have been able to see through the tunnel. William Price Distilling Company, 970 Wakefield Drive, was supposed to open by Christmastime in 2020 after Clary and Hiller had spent years crafting plans for their dream dis tillery, but the two co-own ers instead opened to a world in dire need of hand sanitizer in April 2020. Almost immediately, plans to manufacture their own spirits went out the door while employees worked to produce enough hand sanitizer to help the community, they said. By the time the distillery shifted and began selling its own products, Hiller and Clary began a different sort of Essentially, struggle.Texas, like many states, falls under a three-tiered system, where a manufacturer must work through a distributor to sell to a retailer, according to the Texas Alcoholic Bev erage Commission.

In Nehemiah 9 the children of Israel have turned back to God. They have become a people who do not just acknowledge God with their lips, to a people who try to honor Him with their life choices. As they hear from the Word of God and realize the greatness of God, they respond in confession, worship, and praise. The God of the Bible is God alone by His own declaration. He is not a part time god, a take it or leave it god, or a god for when you feel good or for when you feel bad. He is a really big God who created all things, preserves all things, and a God that even the angels worship. When you understand the God of the Bible, the things of this world take a back seat to being right with Him, and walking in fellowship with Him. If you have let the things of this world become so big, scary, or intimidating to you, I want to remind you that there is a God of the universe who is in control of all things and that loves you. He can bring you hope, peace, joy, and purpose. Get to know Him, walk in His ways, trust Him! Gethsemane Lutheran Church Election season is already in full swing. If you go to the store right now you can buy Halloween decorations, Fall decorations, and Christmas decorations. Political signs are everywhere. People are busy trying to provide for themselves and their families, take care of sick friends and family members, enjoy a vacation, or just try and stay ahead of the bill collector and tax man. Life can seem overwhelming and hopeless if we look at it from the wrong perspective. How can you process it all and take care of everything you need to do at the same time?
A Really Big God Means A Really Small MeFall planting and plan ning is one of my favor ite times of the year. For new gardeners, I always suggest beginning in the fall as it offers a wide variety of options with fewer issues regarding pest and Texas heat. If you are starting seeds in doors, now is the time to get star ted for many fall crops while direct sow and transplants have a little more time before they go in the ground. For a successful fall garden, focus on plants in the Brassica family (broccoli, cabbage, cau liflower ect,), root veg etables, legumes and greens such as chard, kale, spinach and salad bowl mixes. Other fall fa vorites include tomatoes and cucumbers. Brassicas should be started indoors now. Transplants should be planted near the end of September through Oc tober.Root vegetables should be directly sown in from the last week of Septem ber to anytime during mid October. However, with our climate many gardeners plant even lat er. Use succession plant ing with root vegetables by planting every 7-21 days. This technique al lows for multiple har vests throughout the season.Forlegumes you may direct sow in the begin ning of October. These grow fairly quickly and may be harvested in as little as six weeks. Greens may be directly sown anytime in Octo ber. Lettuce varieties can be har vested in as little as 30 days, so I recom mend succession plant ing with these as well. Kale and chard do well in cold temperatures and can easily last through the winter. In our climate kale acts as a perennial and chard as a biennial. Plan to place these in your garden where they will thrive well into the nextTomatoseason. transplants can be planted now and cucumbers should be di rectly sown in the garden beginning in September. It should also be noted that pepper plants are perennials as well. If you currently have them in your garden, keep them to harvest throughout the fall and you will have a head start in the Spring! See you in the garden! A significant focus for the Lions, Dial said, has been an enhanced focus on building up strength, stamina, and en durance by way of increased workouts. There were four workout days per week in the summer, he said, and the team will be in the weight room three days per week during the season.Oneof the biggest factors in that, he said, is assistant coach and head athletic trainer Crista Ramos, who was named one of Yahoo Finance’s top 10 per sonal trainers in Texas in 2021.
St. Pius X head coach Greg Cranfill knows inju ries are a part of the game. But even so, he said inju ries to at least nine starters at points last season deci mated the Panthers. This year, however, he thinks his team has the depth, ability, and talent to withstand any challenge and return to the ranks of the TAPPS elite. The Pan thers are coming off a 5-6 season with a 2-4 mark in TAPPS district play, one that ended with an arearound playoff loss to Plano Prestonwood Christian. “I think this year we’re in better shape as far as the depth is concerned in my three years,” he said. Among Cranfill’s return ers are senior quarter back and captain Bryce McKeon, who threw for 950 yards and six touch downs last season in split duty. His targets will include returning all-state receivers Jack son Mobley (566 yards, 8 touchdowns) and Vin cent Doucet (504 yards, 1 touchdown) along with St. Thomas transfer K.J. Dibble.Helping to take the load off will be running backs Josh Mitchell and Menton Lewis, who com bined for 438 yards and six touchdowns last sea son, as well as an offensive line that includes return ers Chase Stepp and Issa Baba.“Football comes down to whether you can run the football and whether you can stop people from running the football, and then whether you have the quarterback who can make the decisions,” Cran fillAndsaid. though the Pan thers’ bread and butter of r unning the football won’t figure to change, Cranfill said McKeon will have more freedom to make his own reads at the line of scrimmage this year, po tentially giving SPX a more dynamic of fense.
Defensively, things start up front for the Panthers with defensive end Aiden Allen (46 tackles, 7 sacks), who currently holds an of fer from Prairie View A&M. It begins on the back end with do-ever ything defen sive back Ethan McMinn, who is coming off an allstate season in which he had five interceptions and three fumble recoveries along with 42 tackles. Joining McMinn on the back end, Cranfill said, are Jonah Erazo (49 tackles, 1 interception) as well as Concordia Lutheran trans fer Ryder Anderson “You’ll see a lot of new faces on that defense, but it’s because those new fac es have come in and beat en other guys out,” he said.
“These extra days we’re putting into the weight room is going to allow us to have continued success, and it’s going to prevent injuries that we would normally have at this time of the year,” he said. “It’s what is going to allow us to have that longevity once we get closer to the playoffs… The investment has been the biggest turnaround to bring everybody together, give them something to work towards, and see the results when they compete.”Aboveall, though, Dial said his goal is to not just win on the field, but produce wellrounded people off of it.

Spartans starting to gel entering season
tops in TAPPS
Pictured is the 2022 Scarborough Spartans’ varsity football team. Head coach Larkay James says the team’s core is starting to gel ahead of the upcoming season.
Overall, he said linebacker Camarrion “am” Davis will be one of the leaders of the team as a whole, and will help spearhead the team’s attitude.“(Kam) has this naturalborn leadership quality about him,” James said. “He doesn’t even know it, but he has that natural quality about him and the guys look to him as the leader.” Ultimately, the Spartans may face an uphill battle. But in James’ mind, the biggest key to success on the field will be the continued cohe siveness of a group he said is closer than many he has seen within the program in seasons past. That cohesiveness ex tends to the classroom, he said, and could in turn help build up the program’s num bers and depth with which they can be competitive and start righting the ship.

“The ones that are stand ing at the end of the year typically have good offen sive and defensive lines, so that’s the area we’ll be look ing to improve and get bet ter, bigger, and stronger,” he said. “I feel really good about the kids we have, just not many of them have the game experience.”

Heights returns all five offensive linemen from last season, led by 6-foot1, 330-pound junior Frank Moss Jr., who already holds Division I offers from the University of Houston and Southern University, and Devinn Farris, who holds offers from Grambling State andThey’llUTSA.be protecting ju nior quarterback Allen Rain ey, who spent last season as the backup – but Dixon said has a crucial mix of athleticism and accuracy for the position – as well as slew of new running backs. A receiving corps of Kevon Misher, Amilcar Frazier, Lamont Robins, and Joseph Diaz are among those Dixon said the staff is also expect ing big seasons from. On defense, Dixon said the Bulldogs likely won’t de viate from their 3-4 defense, and will be spearheaded by superior depth in that front seven. Returning are alldistrict linebackers David Nico (71 tackles, 6 fumble recoveries) and Brice Che valier (52 tackles) along with Jaylon Bihms (48 tackles, 7 TFL).

“We’re looking to open some things up now that we have a different group of athletes – we can do some different things now. So I’m excited about that. Once we get it all to gel, it’s going to be fun to watch,” he said. “It’s always been my offensive philosophy. I want to go back to my stuff that I know, and now I have the personnel to fit all the spots that will make my offense work.”

It’s no secret that it has been a tough last few sea sons on the gridiron for the Scarborough Spartans’ foot ball team, having not won a game since the 2019 season. But head coach Larkay James said he is seeing several signs pointing in the right direction ahead of Scarborough’s season open er against Pro Vision Acad emy on Friday night. And it’s not least of all, he said, because of the first normal offseason in two years dur ing“WCOVID-19.e’vegotten more cohe sive as a unit. They’re bond ing more, and moving as a group, which is the first time they’ve done that since I’ve been here,” he said. “That has shown as one of the major improvements that we’ve had since COVID and the year we weren’t in school. That’s one of the biggest takeaways for me.”On the offensive side of the ball, James said he feels the Spartans have more athleticism than in years’ past, which will al low them to open up the playbook a little bit wider as the season moves along.Itwill be in the hands of first-time quarterback Gar rett Hickerson, he said, as well as shifty running back/ safety Alex Jackson, to spur the offense and help get the ball to their playmakers.

Nose tackle Hezekiah Williams and sophomore Jordan Clavelle will also be key to a front seven Dixon thinks will be among the best in They’reHouston.ready, he said, to change the perception of HISD and inner city schools when it comes to their play off“Wreadiness.e’vegot size; we’ve got talent up front,” he said. “We’re always going to have talent at the skill positions, and that talent is more ex perienced now – but on the of fensive and defensive lines is where I expect us to set us apart.”
Bulldogs bursting with talent in 2022 Heights High School head football coach Stephen Dixon knows what the sen timent is revolving around inner city schools and their football programs in regards to their potential playoff prominence.Buthedoesn’t buy it, and said he is preaching that mindset to his players each day ahead of their season opener this weekend. And he believes his squad has the necessary accumulation of talent to do just that. “A lot of people think that that (inner city schools) can’t win a state champion ship. But South Oak Cliff showed that not to be true. Austin LBJ showed that not to be true,” Dixon said. “We just have to have that men tality that we not only want to win district and advance in the playoffs, but we want to win that state champion ship. We are pushing that to the kids ever y week.” The Bulldogs are no stranger to making the post season, having gone each season since 2010 and in 11 times in Dixon’s 14-year tenure. They did so again last year, but Dixon said the youth and inexperience showed up in a bi-district playoff“We’reloss.expecting a much improved team this season,” he said. “The kids know what to expect now. Last year they were a little wideeyed, but watching them this year, I can definitely see the mistakes being cut down and the kids knowing exact ly what to do and what the expectations are.”

The St. Thomas Eagles have had a nice run of regu lar season success, winning district titles in five of the past six seasons. St. Thomas enters the 2022 season as the 9thranked private school squad in Texas by Dave Camp bell’s Texas Football, and the Eagles will look to con tinue rolling in head coach Rich McGuire’s sixth season at the Everythinghelm. will start of fensively for the Eagles through do-everything ju nior running back Johann Cardena. Cardena accu mulated 1,546 all-purpose yards (975 rushing, 571 re ceiving) and 15 touchdowns last season during a stand out sophomore campaign that has seen him ear n him Division I offers from UTSA, Colorado, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Colo rado State, and Oklahoma. The Eagles also bring back receiver Shaffer Hen derson, the team’s secondleading retur ning receiver with 303 yards and four touchdowns last season. However, the question remains as to who will get them the ball. McGuire said he has been looking at a three-way battle at the quarterback position, with Shadow Creek trans fer Donte Lewis and Fort Bend Willowridge transfer Blaize Covington joining three-year letterman Evan Solis. However, he declined to say who would start this weekend’s opener against St.“AllJohn’s.three of them have different attributes that they bring to the table, and we just need to see what fits best with what we want to do. They’re all great kids, they work hard, and they support each other. It’s been a fun battle where they’re all trying to learn and im prove on what they do.” Defensively, is a differ ent story. The Eagles bring back six star ters from last season, headlined by allstate linebacker Zach Ro cha (114 tackles, 14 TFL) and all-state safety Caleb Davis (39 tackles, 5 passes defensed). Joining them are Jackson Ward, who amassed 70 tackles despite missing nearly half the sea son with an injury, and de fensive back Marquis Kiat ta, who had a team-leading nine passes defensed last season.“We’ve just got guys we feel have been in the fray and played,” McGuire said. “They know what Friday night lights are about, and it really helps to have (a lot) of those guys over there on that side of the ball. We’ve got other guys who are definitely talented, they just haven’t been in the lights yet.”One area McGuire feels could be improved is on both the offensive and de fensive lines, though he did note that it is not because the current starters have any dearth of talent.

Eagles trying to restore winning culture

And in the end, he be lieves this season’s team has what it takes to end the pro gram’ playoff drought. “The ultimate goal should be to play for 16 weeks – and to do that, you have to not get used to the monotony of everything,” he said. “That can’t wear you down, and that’s very hard to do. Just trying to get them to buy in to that daily grind is the key. That’ll put us in position to be where we want to be.”

Waltrip seeking to end playoff drought
The Booker T. Washington Eagles are looking to restore the school’s winning football culture.
There was a time when the Booker T. Washington football team was a perennial playoff contender, making the play offs five times in six seasons fromHowever,2006-2011.the program has fallen on hard times since then, making the postsea son just twice in the past 10 seasons. But players on this year’s team believe they’ve got the pieces to turn things around and restore the pro gram’s“Booklegacy.erT. has a great leg acy of having a great football program,” senior defensive back Hugo Moran said. “It’s been down for many years, but it’s time to bring it back up.”The Eagles are coming off a season in which they went 3-7, including six consecutive losses to close out the season. And junior linebacker Avery Ina said a lack of team chem istry and cohesiveness likely played a role in the losing streak and overall morale of the team. But this season, he said that chemistry is much improved – whether it’s from playing 7-on-7, taking group outings, and every thing in between. And that makes him optimistic about the 2022 campaign. “If we have that bond and that chemistry with each other, we know that when we make mistakes one game, we won’t go out and make them again the next game,” Ina aid. “It’s really good to have that brother hood.”One of the keys players to the Eagles’ success on the field this season, head coach Kelvin Chatham said, will be freshman Nicholas Tramble. Tramble will play all over the field for Booker T. Washing ton, and said he has been wel comed in with open arms by the team’s “They’vereturners.been treating me like a brother since I got here,” Tramble said. “They’ve been pushing me to work hard, sitting down and talking to me about how they want it to be; what we can work on and what we need to work on.”Moran said imparting that work ethic is a key to the Ea gles’ season, while Ina added that overall team discipline will play a significant role in their success. And Tramble echoed their sentiments. “We won’t take any teams lightly,” Tramble said. “We come in every day trying to put in hard work, come into every game and put in the ef fort.”And if it all comes together, players believe they have the ingredients for a resurgent season.“I’dsay the most exciting thing is seeing everybody hav ing fun and making the neigh borhood proud,” said sopho more wide receiver Brodrick Malone, who already holds college offers from SMU, Tex as Southern, and UTSA. That, Moran said, is exactly what this year’s team wants to bring“Theback.biggest key is to bring back the legacy that Booker T. Washington used to have – they very good Booker T. Washington, the ‘everybody gets together’ Booker T. Washington,” he said. “That’s the legacy we want to bring back.
Things have hardly ever been “normal” since Jeremy Kirt took over the reins of the Waltrip Rams’ football team. His first season came imme diately before the COVID-19 pandemic changed the game for all local schools. But things are as normal as they’ve been in his ten ure, he said, and the ability to have a normal spring ball and offseason program al ready means things are off to a good start. “The offseason is a very integral part of developing the team – just in both the overall physical and men tal aspect of development,” Kirt said. “This will be my first semi-normal year, and having that offseason makes things a little more seamless at this point.”
Page 8 • Saturday, August 27, 2022 • The Leader
On the field, it has been a rough go of it for the Rams in recent seasons, as the program has not made the playoffs since 2017. But Kirt believes this season’s team has the chance to make that trend a thing of the past. “Honestly I feel really good about this season,” he said. “…I just want our kids to go out and compete, be a tough hard-hat team with a blue collar mentality. I just want to see them get after it in every aspect of the game.” Not least of all, he said that belief is predicated on a strong senior class that includes defensive tackle Matthew Adekiya, senior re ceivers Carlos Rasgado and Shaun Crawford, running back Jaylen Middleton, and more.In particular, Crawford comes back as the team’s leading receiver from last season, amassing nearly 400 yards and a touchdown in addition to a rushing touch down.“There’s a plethora of my senior kids who have been here since the foundation, so they know what it takes and what we’re looking for as coaches,” Kirt said. “All of them get after it in all aspects. Having a strong leadership group this year is going to be one of our strengths.”Additionally, while he said the team has some ad ditional athletes at the skill positions that may give them more options on the offen sive and defensive side of the football, his mentality is going to remain the same. “I’m a tough, hard-nosed coach,” he said. “So we’re going to run the football, we’re going to be physical and we’re going to play good defense. That’s just our for mula for success.”

Accord ing to American Heritage Girls’ website, Stars & Stripes Award candidates complete a substantial service project, which they plan, lead, and implement in addition to badge work, refer ences, and “personal reflection.”“Through the pro cess of earning the Stars & Stripes Award, candidates gain a firsthand understanding of the servant’s heart required to lead with integrity and humil ity, preparing girls for responsibility as they transition to adult hood,” the website says. But for Wilkinson, the best part about the project has been see ing it come to fruition, knowing she can sat isfy her desire to serve right here in the Oak Forest community.

Review: Laredo Taqueria rolling with Houston changes
and leeway, so a lot of rules with spirits are unfair.” Breweries and wineries, for instance, can both ship prod ucts directly to consumers and Texas residents and buy beer and wine on a Sunday but not spirits, Hart said. Hart also agreed with some of Hiller’s arguments about the three-tiered system in Texas.’“In spirits, you can have a successful product that doesn’t taste good because you just have the right distri bution partners,” Hart said. “The most important part of any brand is distribution and it’s the hardest to get them to Newcare.”distilleries are forced to bring tens of thousands of dollars to the table with opening talks with distribu tors, Hart said. Start-up money is needed to incen tivize sales representatives to sell a distillery’s products, HartAndsaid.even then, sales rep resentatives will often turn to easy sales to make money, HartHartsaid.is also the manag ing partner of Gamin Spirits Group and told the Leader a story about a time the group, working through a distribu tor, make a several hundred thousand-dollar sale in Cali fornia, but the distributor never delivered the product, the buyer got fired because of that and the deal went out the“Allwindow.theyneeded to do was get in a car and deliver the product,” he Distributorssaid. typically make the largest cut out of any distillery’s products, somewhere between a 30 and 35 percent margin on a sale, Hart said. “Then you’ve got a new craft brand coming into the market every five minutes,” Hart said. “They’re all trying to convince distributors to hear them Houstonout.”has somewhere less than 12 active distill eries in the area, Hart said. But distilling is a burgeon ing industry. Companies sold more than 28 million cases of whiskey, bourbon and rye, in the United States in 2020, providing more than $4.3 bil lion in revenue, according to a Wall Street Journal article. There’s some sense that the Texas Legislature might be working to help local dis tillers. The Legislature, for in stance, in May 2013, passed a series of laws that gave distilleries the chance to open tasting rooms and sell a limited number of bottles directly to consumers, ac cording to a Texas Monthly article.Distilleries today can sell up to two bottles per month per customer, Hiller said. The owners of William Price backed a bill in the last legislative session that would have increased that number, Hiller said. “Texas is pretty good com pared to some of the others, in that there’s a plethora of distributors,” Hart said. “And you can technically have more than one distributor selling your product, even if they don’t like it. That makes it easier to hold them ac countable.”Hartpraised the work William Price has done, es pecially the on-site product placementButatleast for now, the key to making it as a dis tilleries lies in appearing in liquor stores across the nation, Hart said. And that takes time and money, he said.“They’re giving it 120 per cent, but it’s still an uphill battle,” Hart said of Clary and Hiller. “It takes years to get those roots deep enough and steady to pull through.”
As a proud Native Hous tonian, I’ve seen a lot of changes in our city. I don’t know of another place that has embraced change better than we Whenhave.Laredo Taqueria opened their doors in the 1980’s, Washington Avenue was a much different place than it is now. Back then, the area was known as the West End. Now people call it Washington Heights. The Heights seems to keep ex panding. What’s next, Galves tonButHeights?lifedid indeed go on. And so has Laredo Taqueria. Like the tiny house in the animated film, “Up”, Lar edo Taqueria is nestled in the middle of the buzz and super charged development inside the loop. And similar to that classic movies’ cantankerous protagonists, in this case, we are rooting for them to hold their ground and resist… change. The very first thing you will notice is the gloriously ostentatious little building it self. Bright yellows and reds abound. Before entering, you can marvel at the tacomaking craftsmen in the large windows. They seem to be saying, “Yeah, this is how it’s done.”AsI took my place in the line just inside the door, I made a note to give them extra points for the large amount of homage they give to our city, especially our be loved Astros. Judging from some of the more expres sive signs on the walls, they clearly are not fans of the Yankees…More points. I was here for one menu item only. Breakfast tacos. I’ve been warned that ex pressing an opinion on these breakfast staples is a perilous business. After all, breakfast tacos are ubiquitous. They are everywhere. It’s like my kids used to whine, ”C’mon Dad, everyone’s doing it!”. Well maybe they shouldn’t be. I have made frenzied, ille gal U-turns and beelined it to a dilapidated taco truck, yet spurned many of the popular chains.Iordered, paid and was greeted by Mario, represent ing the second generation of this family-run business. I had my tacos in about 5 min utes, even though the place was bustling. While wait ing, I noticed the great mix of folks dining here. I heard a table of older gentlemen discussing cars, politics and conspiracy theories. Behind them a woman in business attire hurried out the door with her order. There were several workers discussing a construction project, and in the corner a mom was jug gling young kids. My three tacos were deliv ered by my smiling server. As she walked away, the smile disappeared as she hollered that someone needed to move their white Kia block ing the driveway. The first taco was simple. Bean and cheese. Like ev erything on the menu, they are made fresh in-house. This was my no-frills start to the meal. I prefer the cheese to be a little more melty, but oth erwise, really good. Adding to the mix was a tasty pairing with the spicy green salsa. Next was one of my goto’s, the bacon, egg and cheese. The warm flour tortilla housed a substantial amount of filling. The eggs were fresh, the bacon was cooked perfectly and was en hanced further with the won derful red salsa. For the finale, I decided to get out of my comfort food zone and try the Nopales (cactus) taco. Or as Mario called it “Mexican green beans”. Cooked with bacon bits, it was excellent. Both sal sas worked well with it. Our city of change has many restaurants, but pre cious few that I would con sider to be “gathering plac es”. Places where neighbors can enjoy a good meal and fellowship. Laredo Taqueria is one of those places. This immersive video, light, and sound projec tion is presented on the façade of the iconic rice silos at Sawyer Yards in Art District Houston. The installation features a soundscape by Brian Eno and narratives of 28 extraordinary individu als.The half-hour projec tion explores concepts of freedom, ser vice, equity, and community in our modern world through oral histories, large-scale portraits, and ancestral DNA mapping. This work is an extension of Lyon’s renowned Human Atlas project, which holds a mirror up to society and encourages viewers to question their roles and responsibilities to their communities, cities, and fellow human beings. Human Atlas is a so cial-impact art project that brings together a co hort of nominated com munity members to tell dee per stories about how we self-author and coauthor a more hopeful future through portraits, soundscapes, and DNA mapping.Major funding for Fields of Vision is pro vided by Texas Commis sion on the Arts and the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alli ance. The 80 foot tall grain silos were the talk of the town when in May of 2020, a drive-in theatre opened on the north side of the former Riviana Foods facility.
