Get to know your Houston City Council candidates By Holly Beretto The Leader News Contributor Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7, and early voting is already underway across the city. For those still making their decisions on how they’ll mark their ballot, we offer this guide to the candidates for city council in our readership area. The Leader News is not endorsing any of the candidates, but aims to provide information that facilitates informed decisions. CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES DISTRICT C

Houston City Council District C meanders from Little York in the north all the way to Willowbend in the south. It includes the super neighborhoods of Greater

Inwood, Central Northwest, Lazybrook/ Timbergrove, Greater Heights, Washington Avenue Coalition/Memorial Park, Neartown/Montrose, University Place, Braeburn, Meyerland Area, Braeswood, Willow Meadows/Willow Bend, Midtown, Afton Oaks/River Oaks, Fourth Ward and Greenway/Upper Kirby. THE INCUMBENT District C is currently represented by Council Member Abbie Kamin, who is running for reelection. A native Houstonian, Kamin was in the first graduating class of the Emery/Weiner School and attended Tulane University and American University’s Washington College of Law. She was elected to the Houston City Council in 2019, where she currently serves on its Public

Safety and Homeland Security Committee, and is vice chair of the Quality of Life Committee. She is also a member of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs, Childhood and Youth, Economic Development and Ethics, Elections and Council Governance committees. Prior to her election, Kamin was the regional director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Southwest Regional Office, and also served as committee director and clerk for the Texas House Human Services Committee. www.abbiekamin.com and www. houstontx.gov/council/c/. By Elena Sandovici The Leader News Contributor It’s officially glorious outside! After a long scorching summer, it’s time to finally enjoy the crisp fall mornings, the cooler temperatures throughout the day, the sunshine, and all the beautiful greenery that seems to have survived the unrelenting heat. Now is the perfect time to meet friends or family outdoors or perhaps go on some solo adventures and have a bite or drink al fresco. The Heights offers many options for enjoying a little treat on patios and in parks. Here are a few suggestions. Bluestone Lane Where: 115 W. 19th Street Hours: 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. every day If you want to sit under a cute stripey umbrella and pretend to be European while enjoying top notch Australian caffeinated beverages, or even breakfast or lunch, this is the spot. The cuteness of this tiny patio is unparalleled. You might be tempted to while the day away, and who could blame you? There are so many delicious things to choose from, but the Draught Flat White with Califia

Loro Asian Smokehouse & Bar Where: 1001 W. 11th Street Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. weekdays, 11 a.m.11 p.m. weekends Not only is the patio adorable, but as soon as you approach this place, you will smell brisket. James Beard Award winners, Chef Tyson Cole of Uchi and Aaron Franklin of Franklin Barbecue, have elaborated a fun, playful Asianinspired menu that is bound to keep your taste buds sizzling. And not to worry... although Texas barbecue is a star feature, you will find big and small bites here for vegetarians, too. Also, if you want to just casually have a drink, this is a good spot for that as well. We highly recommend the Piña Horchata, a hauntingly delicious concoction you can enjoy zero-proof or spiked. Da Gama Canteen Where: 600 N. Shepherd Drive Hours: 9 a.m.-10 p.m. every day except Sunday When the weather turns crisp, spices hit different. You might want to stop in to warm up with a curry or enjoy a cup of chai at the Café Window (located in

Da Gama). Inspired by the food culture of Goa, a former Portuguese-Indian territory, as well as Gujarat and Portugal, Da Gama is one of the most innovative restaurants in Houston today. Which is saying a lot. What makes it especially wonderful to visit this time of year is its beautiful terrace (and the more casual Café Window) overlooking the walking trail and Lawrence Park. You could, if you plan things right, even walk or bike here, and it’s fun to sit outside letting the complex and warm flavors of the food embrace you while watching people walk around or simply lounge on benches, enjoying the public space of the adjacent park. For fall we recommend the rich, decadent, yet surprisingly healthy Beet Cafreal.

How it’s going... Fast forward to today, where womenowned businesses represent an impressive 42% of all businesses in the United States, generating a staggering $1.9 trillion in revenue. As a microcosm of the Houston metroplex, The Heights is no stranger to the strong, dedicated women in business who drive and lead our community. We would like to share some of their stories.

Better Luck Tomorrow Where: 544 Yale Street Hours: 11 a.m.-12 a.m. weekends; 2 p.m.12 a.m. weekdays This is a happy place to visit in all seasons – yes, even in summer we would risk a little sweat and frizzy hair for some delicious drinks on this patio.

Dr. Nataly Perez, a Heights native, still lives in the Heights and wanted her small business to be in the Heights because she feels it is truly a diverse small town in a big city. As a newly licensed doctor of chiropractic medicine, Perez didn’t initially feel prepared to run her own business and chose to be an associate working for another practice.

How it started... According to the Small Business Administration, as recently as the 1980s women desiring to apply for business loans were still required to have a male relative co-sign their applications. The year 1988 brought a significant turn for women business owners with the passage of the Women’s Business Ownership Act. This pivotal legislation opened the floodgates of opportunity, increasing the Small Business Administration’s accessibility to capital.

Getting around town is more expensive, more frustrating here than elsewhere How locals feel about Houston traffic and rising vehicle ownership costs

traffic “seems to get crazier every day.”

By Elena Sandovici The Leader News Contributor A recent study by Compare the Market AU finds that Houston ranks #3 in U.S. cities with the most traffic complaints, just after Los Angeles and New York City. More than 39% of Houstonians surveyed reported being frustrated with Houston traffic, compared to 25.4% in Dallas, 21.4% in Chicago, 11.4% in Fort Worth, and only 11.1% in San Antonio. Even in the international arena, based on the number of social media complaints, Houston places as the 5th worst commuter city after L.A. (#1); Sydney, Australia; Vancouver, Canada; and NYC. This surely comes as no surprise to most Houstonians as, no matter where one lives in the city, there seem to always be errands to run that are either 20 or 45 minutes away depending on the time of day, and the frustration of being stuck in traffic is as familiar to us as the buzzing of cicadas in summer or the scent of fire pits and brisket permeating the air on those cool fall nights. Long Road to Everywhere With its amazing food scene, its dynamic economy, its world class museums, theater and music venues, and its unparalleled resilience in the face of adversity, Houston is in many ways a lovely place to live. But its traffic and its continuous reliance on cars as a primary mode of transportation are to some as off-putting as the relentless summer heat. Or perhaps more so. After all, you can hide from the heat in air-conditioned spaces, but even if you are that rare Houstonian who uses public

transit, you are still likely to get stuck on the road somewhere and wait helplessly for longer than you’ll find acceptable. Last year, geolocation company tomtom released a study that found that the average Houston driver spends about 46 hours in traffic over the course of a year. That is almost two whole days (and nights)! The good news is that Heights residents are, in some small ways, protected from the tremendous inconvenience that is Houston traffic. The area is dense enough to be walkable. Commerce is thriving and most errands don’t require venturing into the city. In nice weather, strolling to the neighbor’s house or the neighborhood cafe is easy enough. But many Heights residents have to drive out of the neighborhood to go to

work, and their commutes are predictably aggravating. Heights resident Morgan Belling, who works in the Medical Center, told The Leader that her commute is about 35 minutes going to work, but about 50-55 minutes coming home. “I’m somewhat frustrated by traffic. I think it’s a fairly common complaint living in Houston,” she said. “I AM frustrated by traffic,” Heights resident Vince Blasco echoed Belling’s sentiment. His commute is about 17 minutes to work and 28 minutes home, and the area where he experiences the most congestion is between TC Jester and Hardy. Paula Hawkins works in the Heights but lives in the East End. Her commute, taking her through downtown to get to the Heights takes about 30 minutes. She told The Leader

places in several ways and for several reasons. Houstonians are fond of big vehicles, which certainly adds to acquisition or loan costs, and the price for car insurance is typically higher in an area with lots of traffic and, as a result, an increased likelihood of getting into an accident. It explains, at least in part, why car ownership here tends to be more expensive overall than in other places across the nation. Heights residents The Leader talked to expressed relief over vehicles that were paid off, and they all reported that their car insurance had gone up anywhere from 20% to 28% recently. Belling said that during a recent conversation with her insurance company, a representative told her that there’s a trend recently of auto insurance rates rising significantly. Consider this data recently released by third-party online bill payment website doxo: • Per month, the average Houston household spends $710 on car ownership, 5.3% higher than the U.S. monthly average of $674. • Per month, the average Houston household spends $156 on Auto Insurance, 24.6% lower than the U.S. monthly average of $207. • Per month, the average Houston household spends $554 on Auto Loans, 18.6% higher than the U.S. monthly average of $467. Perhaps if Houston’s city roads were safer, the driving experience smoother, and public transit more efficient and accessible, Houstonians could go for more affordable options.

The Price We Pay For Mobility Around H-Town To make matters worse, car ownership, which is almost a necessity for most of the city’s population, is more expensive here than the national average and insurance costs are on the rise, too. A recent study by iSeeCars found that due to what some term the “pandemic hangover,” a mix of limited production tied to plant shutdowns and increasing demand, the price of used cars all over the nation increased on average 33% across all car ages over the past few years. “Plant shutdowns and limited new car production during the pandemic is still playing havoc with the used car market,” said iSeeCars’ executive analyst Karl Brauer. “With 28 percent fewer 1-to-3-year-old used cars today compared to 2019, buyers have to shop 6-year-old – or older – cars to find a comparably priced vehicle.” The study’s findings for Houston, specifically, show that: • I n 2019 a 3-year-oldHyundai Accent cost $10,881, but in 2023 a comparable budget of $10,284 can only afford an older 10-year-old Hyundai Accent. • The average cost of a 3-yearold car in Houston was $24,398 in 2019, but it’s now $33,339 in 2023 – a change of 36.6%. • Compared to the price of a 3-year-old car in 2019, a comparable budget of $25,134 will only buy a 6-year-old car today. While cars everywhere have become more expensive, Houston, where a vehicle is a necessity, not a luxury, is a city where car ownership costs more than in other

THE TOPICS.

The Earth is flat – trust me THE DEN – Tonight is time for a good book. There is “The Wit and Wisdom of the Vice Presidents From Aaron Burr to Kamala Harris.” The pages are blank. And there’s “A Spelunker’s Guide to Celebrity Chefs.” Wait. My doorbell is ringing. Who could be calling at this hour? I open the door and a man is standing there, wearing a trench coat with the collar turned up, a fedora pulled low and sunglasses, at 11 p.m. He looks over his shoulders and then hisses, “Marvin has a nose bleed.” Huh? He then says, “It is Sunday in Portugal.” I say, “Go away. I think you have the wrong house.” The mysterious visitor asks, “This isn’t 123 Pothole Place? No? I’m called Grassy Knoll. First, a few questions to see if you’re, uh, one of us. You know that nine-eleven was staged by the Pentagon, and that Tucker Carlson was fired by Fox News on April 24, 2023, the 125th anniversary of the Spanish-American War. Coincidence? I don’t think so.” “Hold it!” I say. “You must be one of those conspiracy nut cakes, always finding hidden meanings and spreading false theories. You probably believe that Joe Biden didn’t actually win the popular vote, but deep state fixed the ballot counting.” He smiles. “Then you are, indeed, one of us. Yes, it’s true. Deep state hid vast numbers of ballots for Trump. Millions of Americans

Lynn Ashby Columnist

still believe Trump won. Right after the Presidential election polls found that three of every 10 Americans believed that Biden’s victory was due to fraud. In the years since, despite all the congressional investigations and hearings, despite all the fact checkers and court trials, do you know how many Americans still believe the election was stolen? Nothing’s changed. Three out of every 10. That includes a hundred percent of Republicans.” I shut the door but started doing a little research. Conspiracies are a cottage industry in America. In decades past it was the Kennedy assassination. Over 1,000 books have been written about that tragic event, and at least 90 percent are works supporting the view that there was a conspiracy. The madness won’t die. Remember November a couple of years ago when hundreds of people stood on a downtown Dallas sidewalk holding signs and flags. They were waiting for John F. Kennedy, Jr. John F. Kennedy the senior would also appear,

alongside Jackie, to anoint Donald Trump as king. JFK then departs, leaving behind his son to serve as vice president to King Trump. While we are in Texas, we must consider Jade Helm 15. In 2015, the Army conducted an annual exercise that quickly became a cover for a takeover of the state by the Obama administration. Gov. Greg Abbot ordered the Texas State Guard (not the Texas National Guard) to monitor the operation. “During the training operation, it is important that Texans know their safety, constitutional rights, private property rights and civil liberties will not be infringed.” Michael Hayden, a former CIA director, said the Jade Helm 15 controversy was used by the Russians to see how much influence they could exert through online means “to convince most -- many -- Texans it was an Obama plan to round up political dissidents.” Ah, yes, Texans. Alex Jones, that crazy guy on Infowars, said the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was a fake. Jones could do his broadcasts from anywhere, but he felt he would be most comfortable in – ta-da! -- Texas, specifically Austin. Another snake oil salesman is Glenn Beck. He also preaches fear and conspiracies without an ounce of proof, and from where? Dallas. What is it about our beloved state that attracts loonies? Grassy Knoll is still outside.

HALLOWEEN IS COMING

I open the door and he says, “I’m not here to debate fake news, but to solicit your vote for Robert F. Kennedy, Junior, for president. He’s the only candidate who tells the truth. Did you know that COVID-19 vaccines, which can cause autism, were targeted to attack Caucasians and Blacks and the people who are most immune are Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese in the U.S.? And the feds put hundreds of millions of dollars into ethnically targeted microbes and labs in Ukraine. The CIA was involved in the assassination of JFK. That’s why 14 percent of voters say they would vote for Kennedy for president. I rest my case.” I slam the door and go back to my research. In many cases, misinformation simply reinforces preconceived notions. We saw TV shots of the rioters storming the U.S. Capitol, but who really led the charge? Tucker Carlson said “potentially” and “almost certainly” FBI agents were involved, and that “FBI operatives were organizing the attack on the Capitol on January 6.” Sixty-six percent of Republicans don’t consider the riot to be an attack on the government. That same poll also found that 77 percent of Republicans don’t hold Trump responsible for it anyway. The spooky theories get spookier. It’s black helicopters. Microchips embedded in COVID-19 vaccinations. That Malaysian Airlines plane that disappeared during a flight

in March 2014? Snatched by UFOs, obviously. These conspiracies can make some people rich. FOX has the highest ratings of any TV cable news network. It is estimated that Sean Hannity’s annual income is $43 million. Laura Ingraham’s is $15 million. Tucker Carlson’s annual pay was $10 million. Once they plant a seed of falsehood, it takes on a life of its own. Mark Twain said, “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” My doorbell rings again. “You know that Hillary Clinton led the assault on Benghazi. FOX News had tape proving that she was at the front of the demonstrators throwing fire

Nutrition and bone health: What you need to know about osteoporosis By Shana Tatum RD, LD IFMCP www.shanatatumrd.com The week of Oct. 12-20, 2023, was dedicated to highlighting Bone and Joint Action Week this year. According to a report by the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative, 54% of Americans suffer from a musculoskeletal bone or joint condition. Generally, this includes arthritis, osteoporosis, or spinal misalignment and deformity. These conditions can lead to decreased quality of life and disability, and estimated costs associated with these diseases total $950 billion dollars annually. Osteoporosis is a significant health concern that can affect people of all ages, but it becomes increasingly prevalent as we grow older. Here, we will delve into osteoporosis specifically, discussing what it is, the ages of concern for both men and women, and essential strategies for prevention, including exercise and nutrition. WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS?

Osteoporosis is a bone disorder characterized by a decrease in bone density and quality, making bones fragile and more susceptible to fractures. It can be categorized into two forms: primary or secondary. This categorization depends on whether it occurs as part of the natural aging process (estrogendeficiency) or as part of disease pathology. Secondary could include outcomes from hyperparathyroidism, Cushing’s syndrome, hyperthyroidism, and premature ovarian insufficiency also known as premature menopause. Bones are living tissues that are constantly being broken down and rebuilt. In healthy individuals, the process of bone formation typically outpaces bone resorption (breaking down), resulting in strong and

Exercise: Regular weight-bearing and resistance exercises are crucial for building and maintaining bone density. When muscle mass increases, this stress on the skeleton induces the bone cells to replicate. Resistance exercises to consider include weighted lunges, weighted knee extension/flexion, weighted squats, and deadlifts. Activities such as yoga, jogging, and dancing also stimulate bone formation. Start at lower intensity and increase over time. Target the muscles that cross the hip and spine. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorousintensity aerobic activity each week, combined with musclestrengthening activities on two or more days per week.

dense bones. However, in osteoporosis, this balance is disrupted, leading to a gradual loss of bone mass and structure. AGES OF CONCERN FOR MEN AND WOMEN

While osteoporosis can affect people of all ages, it is more commonly associated with the aging process. For women, the risk of developing osteoporosis significantly increases after menopause, typically around the age of 50. This is because the sharp decline in estrogen during menopause accelerates bone loss. Men, on the other hand, tend to have a slower rate of bone loss, but they are not immune to osteoporosis. Men are more likely to develop this condition later in life, generally in their 60s or 70s. It’s important to note that osteoporosis can also affect younger individuals, particularly those with certain medical conditions or lifestyle factors that contribute to bone loss. Therefore, it’s crucial to focus on prevention and bone health throughout life.

Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients plays a pivotal role in preventing osteoporosis: • Calcium: Adequate calcium intake is essential for bone health. Good dietary sources of calcium include dairy products, leafy greens (like kale and collard greens), and tofu. Adults typically need around 1000-1300 milligrams of calcium per day. For example, a ½ cup serving of tofu has 434mg, and 1

with a strong emphasis on exercise and nutrition. Those at age 65 and over are the current group of people recommended for DEXA scans to assess bone mineral density. However, I see more and more patients with osteopenia and osteoporosis present much earlier. This can be due to reasons listed above of secondary causes from disease, but also from long term medication use that could impair mineral absorption. Talk with your doctor if you have a family history or any secondary conditions.

FELIX JAVIER CISNEROS Felix Javier Cisneros is retired and cites wanting to improve the city as his reasons for running for District C. Crime is among his main concerns, and he seeks solutions that will protect the district’s neighborhoods. He also wants to secure more police on the city’s streets and more funding for the Houston Fire Department. Tackling homelessness and seeing fewer guns in neighborhoods are also part of his platform. He is executive director of Your Houston, a grassroots, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for all Houstonians. cup of unsweetened almond milk contains 450mg. • Vitamin D: Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption and bone health. Spend time outdoors to get natural sunlight, which triggers vitamin D synthesis in the skin. Only 10-20 minutes of sun exposure before 10 a.m. or after 2 p.m. can help. Dietary sources of vitamin D include fatty fish (like salmon and mackerel), egg yolks, and button mushrooms. In some cases, supplements may be necessary, especially for individuals with limited sun exposure or genetic variants for the Vitamin D receptor. • Protein: Protein provides the building blocks for bones. Include lean protein sources such as poultry, seafood, beans, and legumes in your diet. • Vitamin K: Vitamin K is involved in bone mineralization. This fatsoluble vitamin has been shown to inhibit calcification in the vessels arteries and may play an important role in atherosclerosis. Leafy greens such as kale, bok choi, collard greens and Swiss chard, broccoli, and Brussel sprouts are good sources of vitamin K. If vitamin D has been measured to be low, consider supplementation with vitamin K in combination with vitamin D3.

WOMEN, from P. 1 Feeling that her own practice was in her future, Perez sought the advice of a trusted source -- her mother. Mom’s words of wisdom were not to delay the inevitable. If owning her own business was the end goal, start now. And that’s just what Perez did. Now, 11 years into her career, her practice and small business is exactly how she always envisioned it would be. “Obviously, the first few years when I was on my own were challenging, exhausting, fun, validating, thrilling but, overall, very much worth it,” Perez said. “In fact, all days as a business owner can have all those emotions rolled into one. This is true for year one or year 11.” Having grown and prospered in her hometown, Perez’s office currently has three wonderful associate chiropractors, four amazing massage therapists, and three incredible office staffers. “It’s a great feeling to collaborate with others and know that my growth and success is only because of them and every single patient that has placed their trust in me”, Perez said. Learning about her patients’ lives, careers, travel habits, children, grandchildren, or their weekend pickle ball or soccer league gives Perez a broader story on why they are seeking chiropractic care and helps her be the practitioner they need. Perez’s advice to anyone entertaining the idea of starting a business is to simply make it your own. Make it reflect who you are and who you would support if you were a customer. Enjoy working every day on it and have passion for whatever path you choose. “You will wear many hats (and look great in all of them), but I promise there are more great days than bad days for sure,” she said. As a woman, and as a minority, I’m proud have space in a community where I grew up, seeing small businesses thrive.” Perez’s office is located at 721 E 14th Street. ANAMARIS COUSINS: CHEF/OWNER, SECRETO

Instagram/Facebook @secretopopup For Chef Anamaris Cousins, a Heights resident, cooking goes back to her childhood. Her mother had a real passion and talent for cooking and en-

tertaining friends and family, and she was a willing assistant from age 5. Even as a child, Chef Cousins realized dinner parties were much more than the food served -- they were an opportunity to nourish bodies, spirits, souls, and create memorable moments that she still cherishes. After a long stint in the corporate world, Cousins found herself craving these types of events and looking for ways to bring that joy back to her life and help others host dinner parties without all the stress it can bring. “My corporate job allowed me to travel extensively throughout Latin America and watch how diners in restaurants and cafes became immersed in the experience, savoring meals and strengthening their connections,” Cousins explained. “Food is the universal language that links us all.” Exploring the diverse flavors and ingredients in local cuisines, what she considers the ‘authentic’ food of the Americas, fascinated Cousins and fueled her desire to share this with as many people as possible. The catalyst of a tasting menu where she was able to learn about each dish and the significance of the ingredients, directly from the chef, kindled her passion to recreate a similar culinary journey for her friends and family. In the summer of 2014, Cousins hosted her first underground dinner party to channel her mother’s hospitality and love for sharing food with loved ones. These dinner parties happened monthly, eventually adding brunches, private parties for customers, and a bit of catering to her portfolio. She officially launched Secreto in August 2020 after Covid-19 led to a layoff at her corporate job. “Embarking on the path of entrepreneurship has proven to be a captivating journey. It comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when contrasted with the security and predictability of a corporate career,” she said. “As an entrepreneur, particularly in the service industry, I find myself donning multiple roles—I am the creative force, the marketer, the problem-solver, and the person who rectifies issues. This experience is a whirlwind of both daunting overwhelm and invigorating excitement, and I can’t help but wish I had taken the plunge earlier!” Cousins immersed herself in a community of fellow business owners at various points along their entrepreneurial paths. This, she said, provided her with invaluable insights, the wisdom gleaned from their experiences, and a sense of camaraderie to lean on during challenging moments or when she felt stuck. She has come

to believe that in the realm of business, it’s advantageous not to be the most knowledgeable person in the room. The key is to keep learning and growing. If you would like to experience the cuisine of Chef Cousins, she we’ll be hosting an information session for anyone interested in joining on a foodie tour of Mexico City in November and Puebla in March. Additionally, on Dec. 9, she has a special event planned –- a sparkling wine and bites pairing, at her Arts District studio. “This is, without a doubt, my favorite and busiest time of the year, and I can’t wait to share these experiences with everyone,” she said. SARAH GANANN: PRESIDENT, CONSTRUCTIVE DEVELOPMENT SERVICES, LLC

Facebook @constructivedevelopment ; LinkedIn - Sarah Ganann, CAPM Commercial real estate can be challenging, but Sarah Ganann, president of Constructive Development Services, LLC, found it to resonate with her and give her the opportunity to encourage and support other women in the Heights community. In her 30s, while Sarah was restructuring a commercial real estate development firm, she realized she had found her passion for all things commercial real estate. To put it in her own words, “I found excitement in analyzing the numbers in combination with the intricate process of development, the many team members involved, and the addition of project complications that evoke critical thinking and problem-solving solutions.” The desire to start CDS came in October of 2018, after a conversation she had initiated to discuss her role as director of operations with her firm and the possibility of evolving her role into sourcing new deals for development. The idea was well received, and terms were offered at a 5% carried interest with no say-so in the decisions related to the development of these projects. During the short walk back to her office, Sarah decided she wanted a say. She wanted to be able to keep her word to

any clients, tenants or investors who chose to work with her. She also wanted to use her strengths in negotiations, client services and have the ability to put the client’s needs first. Solidified in January of 2019, that decision was made whole and CDS was born. “This gave me the freedom to have my say,” Ganann said. “The freedom to find balance, to be more present as a parent with flexibility in my schedule, while also finding flexibility to be available to clients as their schedules allowed.” Sarah’s company offers brokerage services, consulting services, and property management services, just to name a few. In 2020, CDS earned an opportunity amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. While pivoting into third-party leasing and sales of commercial properties, CDS bid on a project to assist the Houston-Galveston Area Council with COVID relief funds for Harris County. Through this venture, Sarah’s company was able to be a part of the process in distributing $2.5 million of the $10 million in loans for small businesses allocated to Houston. Sarah’s advice to other women entrepreneurs is all about self-worth. “Have Confidence. Believe in your capabilities. Surround yourself with support, mentorship and keep a growth/ learning mindset,” she advised. “Learn more than what your field requires. Being educated, experienced and confident in what you do will take you from being questioned to being asked questions; and that’s a great feeling!” Sarah hopes to pay her knowledge forward in the future with mentorships and sponsorships to empower and educate the next generation. She is a local leader for the Women’s Council of Entrepreneurs Heights Chapter. More information about CDS can be found on Sarah’s website at constructivedevelopment.com.

DR. VIVIANA COLES: RELATIONSHIP THERAPIST Instagram: @houstonrelationshiptherapy and @doctorviviana

Dr. Viviana Coles turned her love of helping friends through tough times and relationships into a profession. Her career path began as a junior at Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, where she learned from

her counselor that what she often found herself doing, talking to friends and acquaintances about their problems at home or with their boyfriends, was an actual profession. She took the counselor’s advice and enrolled in Psychology 101 and Sociology 101 her first semester of college at Southwestern University. She was hooked. Coming from an entrepreneurial family of leading professionals, Coles knew she would be obtaining her doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy, with the ultimate goal of being known as the most trusted relationship therapist in and around Houston. In the first year of her master’s degree, she became a certified sex therapist, just in case any of her clients would ever ask her about sexual issues. After completing her doctoral courses at Nova Southeastern University, she marketed herself as a relationship and sex therapist. “As evidenced by the long waitlist I had even early on in my private practice, there were too few certified sex therapists in all of the Houston area, and I was the only one under the age of 60,” Coles said. She was subsequently a featured matchmaker and intimacy expert on Lifetime’s hit reality tv series “Married at First Sight”, seasons 9-14, where she was able to use her expertise and training in a unique way. When asked why she thinks her business has been successful, Coles says, “I’m driven, stubborn, and focused. I’ve been supported and surrounded by family and friends along the way. But the truth is, I believe my businesses have been successful because I love the daily challenge of helping to heal broken relationships. Every relationship is so nuanced, but over my 20 years of working with clients I have created systems and processes that are effective and reliable.” Being on national TV has had a huge impact on Cole’s reputation as a trusted expert. Publishing her book, “The 4 Intimacy Styles: The Key to Lasting Physical Intimacy” has also added to her status as a trusted expert. She is also the intimacy expert at news channel Fox 26 Houston. Cole’s advice to anyone hoping to grow in their field is to say “yes” to media opportunities, even if you are scared. She has developed a media training guild to help other clinicians learn how to help even more people by becoming better known in the media. To add to her list of accomplishments, Coles has recently launched VIVID Relationships: Matchmaking Agency, where she enjoys helping singles find out who they really are so they

know who they should be looking for in romantic partners. She will be hosting singles events and sharing practical dating tips. Coles’s practice is located at 1302 N. Shepherd Dr., 3rd Floor. Visit her online at www. HoustonRelationshipTherapy. com and www.DoctorViviana. com.

Review: Good vibrations at Coastline Pizzeria By Dan Greer The Leader News Contributor Some of my favorite spots in town are within a few blocks of each other in this little corridor around Washington Avenue and Houston Avenue. It’s burgeoning with great little restaurants and bars. With its proximity to downtown, it’s a perfect area to go before or after a ballgame, concert, or play. So, we’ve been eagerly anticipating the opening of Coastline since the name teasingly appeared on their window many months ago. Happily, they opened recently and it is already a neighborhood (and beyond) hit. It all started when a couple of buddies decided to bring a unique pizza experience to Houston. One of the many key decisions a new place must determine is deceivingly difficult…their name. They came up with the name “Coastline” by, according to their website, “combining the definition (the exposed sauce between end of cheese and beginning of crust),

and by the origin of our two styles of pizza from the Texas and Neapolitan coast.” Pretty clever. There was ample parking in back when I arrived around 5:15 p.m. Upon entering, you are greeted with a friendly welcome and that unmistakable aroma of freshly baked pizza. Even at this early hour, the place was buzzing. Full disclosure, this was my third time here in the short time they’ve been open. I am happy to report that each time has been a great experience and that I’ve actually grown fonder of it with every subsequent visit. So, what is your expectation of appetizers at a pizzeria? Maybe some garlic knots or a caprese salad? And at many places, these are just yawners before the main event right? Coastline has taken pizzeria appetizers to another level. And several of them are included on their awesome happy hour menu. The beef and pork meatballs are very good. The fresh shishito peppers are tasty and cooked perfectly.

beauty lies pickled onions, a pickle chip, and some incredibly mouthwatering, thinly sliced, ribeye steak. But the sauce is what puts it over the top. Described as “bana-naise” it is an aioli that combines roasted tomatillos, jalapeno and, wait for it…ripe bananas. Yes, you read that right. And your taste buds will be partying like it’s 1999. Happy hour price is just $3 per slider. I was so enthralled with the sliders that I almost forgot that there were pizzas coming. They have an impressive looking Ste-

I kept it pretty simple tonight and ordered the happy hour cheese and pepperoni pizza, as well as the OG pizza from the regular dinner menu. The cheese pizza is wonderfully basic. I added the “cup & char” which is what magically happens to the little pepperonis when they spend that short time in 900-degree heat. They use a little oil and sauce, some mozzarella and some very fresh and flavorful pepperoni to transform this unassuming, yet terrific little pie. A very reasonable 10 bucks. At the other end of the ingredient spectrum was the very showy OG pizza. In addition to the house tomato sauce and mozzarella, the supporting cast includes pepperoncini, basil and some nice habanero honey. A dollop of ricotta is artfully placed on each slice. Savory

Whether you are moving into the neighborhood or you are a long time resident, it is reassuring to utilize a professional who has been a staple in the neighborhood for many years. She has been serving your neighborhood for over 25 years. Phyllis and her staff strive to make it easy and convenient to get your legal matters addressed. The location of her law office at 5005 W. 34th Street allows for quick access from many surrounding neighborhoods. Your Will designates who will receive your worldly goods. Having a professionally drafted Will makes the transition at the time of your death as easy as possible for your loved ones. Some people believe a handwritten or self prepared Will is better than no Will. In some cases that may be true and in some cases it will cause more problems than it solves. A professionally drafted Will assures your grief stricken loved ones will have a smoother transition in the transfer of your estate at the lowest cost possible. Upon the death of a loved one, their Will must be probated to be legally effective. Unfortunately, Phyllis first meets many of her clients when there has been a death in their family. It is her goal to provide the information, guidance, and assistance to make the process of probating the loved one’s Will as easy as possible. She strives to provide her clients with sufficient information and services so they can focus their attention on their family’s emotional needs. Having a trusted neighborhood professional to partner with during such an emotional and stressful time helps to ease the burden of her clients trying to carry out their daily activities.

If you are seeking professional, personal legal representation, call 713-692-0300 to make an appointment with your neighborhood attorney, Phyllis A. Oeser, Attorney at Law.
