Dear Father Ryan Community, The spirit of Father Ryan’s legacies has infused so many of these evenings in recent years. From the salute to Jinx Cockerham and our 40 Years of Women in 2011 to the honor for Jeff Schletzer and the more than 30 years of our band program last year, we have been able to look with pride on longstanding parts of our tradition that have enriched our school. This year expresses that once again and honors a half century of memories and excellence as we salute Patrick Simpson ’74 and the members of our Father Ryan wrestling program. Since the fall of 1962 when Fr. Fennell established this sport, wrestling has been a shining example of Father Ryan at its best, with 19 state titles and 80 individual champions as its heritage. In addition, it has served as a powerful developmental program for Father Ryan, preparing young men physically, mentally and spiritually to be strong, determined leaders throughout our community. Those characteristics are proudly championed by our honoree and expressed by him through every part of his life. Pat Simpson has devoted more than three and a half decades to this school and its students. In every year, at every moment, he has been steadfast in celebrating this school. He has taught our students well, on the fields and on the mats, in the classrooms and in the halls, demonstrating by his very presence the power of Catholic education to change lives. I thank you all for joining us tonight. I thank Connie and Brett Wesnofske for their creative and infectious leadership that has produced another stellar evening for the Irish family. And I especially thank Pat for his character, for his steady leadership and for his commitment to Catholic education. We all join to raise his arm tonight. God Bless Everyone,
Jim McIntyre President
8
Welcome! We would like to welcome everyone to tonight’s celebration of one of Father Ryan’s most successful legacies. We hope you truly enjoy the evening. For over 50 years, wrestling, Father Ryan and success have been synonymous, and one of the secrets to that success is our honoree, Pat Simpson ‘74. Pat has been a key part of the sport’s success since he entered Father Ryan as a student more than 40 years ago. Since returning to Father Ryan as a teacher and coach, he has built on the leadership of his coaching predecessors – Joe Drennan ’57 and Bobby Garmon ’65 – guiding the program’s growth and showcasing our school and our students throughout many parts of the eastern United States. What those communities have seen is a spirit that is uniquely Father Ryan, one that is embodied in the generations of young men and women who have benefitted from and enriched this school. The two of us have been around the Father Ryan wrestling program for more than 25 years – as a competitor, as parents, as a coach and as avid supporters. We have seen the impact that this sport, this school, these teachers and these coaches have on our children. We are grateful for that gift. We are also grateful for the hard work of so many volunteers and Father Ryan staff members who have made this event outstanding. And we particularly would like to thank the sponsors for their support, both of this evening and throughout the year. We have been privileged to be the Chairs of this 34th annual event. May the spirit of our community be an expression of the distinctive role Father Ryan plays in our lives, in our community and in Catholic education.
Sincerely,
Connie and Brett ’88 Wesnofske Father Ryan Parents and Legacy Gala Chairs

Honoring Patrick Simpson ’74 and the 50th Anniversary of Wrestling Do you think Pat Simpson has a fondness for wrestling? Just ask him what he thinks about WWF and Wrestlemania.
for their 10th anniversary celebration was a demonstration of the impact Pat has on everyone he meets, in whatever venue they gather.
Here’s the coach of one of the region’s most respected and accomplished programs, part of one state championship team while a student at Father Ryan, coach of 15 state title teams and 60 championship wrestlers, a member of the MTSU Hall of Fame for his wrestling achievements. Here’s a man who has taught young men the secrets of leg rolls, bridges and who knows how many other holds, each built on the classical traditions of the sport, traditions that roll backwards to the Greeks, rolling around amongst the temples in the glorious age of the ancient Olympics. What could he think about WWF?
1974 State Champions
The measure of that impact is seen in the new Patrick Simpson ’74 Wrestling Facility—don’t you know that makes Pat blush every time he walks in—a gleaming, expansive place that reflects the work and achievements of this sport and this man. But what was most telling about Pat, and the best evidence of what’s important to him, was that when the naming of the facility was revealed last spring in a surprise announcement, it was an event that gathered all his family and celebrated family, beginning with Pat’s parents. For him, his success starts with his family—one of nine kids, virtually everyone a wrestler or a wrestling parent, his wife, Stephanie ’90, son, Kirby, a freshman at Father Ryan, and daughter Caroline—and continues through multiple generations. You can see where Pat gets his strength, his character, his resolve, his commitment to his faith.
The corners of his mouth turn upwards in a big smile, his eyes sparkle, and he says loudly, “I love it!” You see, for him, wrestling, in all its expressions, is worth watching and well worth celebrating. It’s been that way since he discovered the sport as a grade schooler, and it has guided his teaching and his devotion to his students and his athletes for more than three decades. For all of these reasons Father Ryan is proud to salute him as the 2013 Legacy Gala Honoree. Pat, a 1974 Father Ryan alumnus, is a man of faith, a fact that informs all he does. He is a teacher, whether he’s on the mat or in the classroom, where he teaches in the wellness and social science departments, a career that now totals 34 years, all of them at Father Ryan. He has served as the head coach of wrestling since he got here, and as we all know, he’s had a little bit of success in that role…seven team and eight dual state titles earn you a little bit of recognition in the world of wrestling. But it’s not his only sport. He is the linebacker coach for the football team and previously served as the head coach of softball from 1987-97. In typical Simpson style, he coached the 1995 softball team to the state title. Seeing those young women greet Chris Agnew ‘11 and Coach and praise and tease their Simpson ‘74 celebrate after coach when they returned winning State.
When the facility was announced, Father Ryan President Jim McIntyre praised Pat’s work ethic and his commitment to the school’s students. “Pat is a Father Ryan teacher through and through, whether in the classroom, on the field, or on the mat. And he lives his faith in everything he does. For more than three decades he has represented excellence and achievement and has a legacy of studentathletes who are better people because they were coached by him. Naming this wrestling facility after him—and saluting the Simpson family, who have been integral parts of this community and this sport—is natural. In addition to the impact it has on our campus and the wrestling program, it will also be a lasting tribute to his many accomplishments and the impact he has had on our students.” So lean back in your chair, cross your arms and smile this time, Pat. This night, we’re focusing on you. You’re at the center of the mat, and we’re raising your arm in proud celebration. 10
A Half Century of Accomplishments “We carried Joe Drennan around the mat we were so excited. The 12 of us on the team were best friends. We could finally say that a Midstate school won a state championship in wrestling.”
1963, First Wrestling Team “That was a great time,” remembers Donnelly, who went undefeated for the season in his matches. “I remember the gym was packed, and the crowds were unbelievable,” says Donnelly. “Ryan had to open up the stage so that there was room for people to sit.”
—Scott Brunette ‘69 as told to The Tennessean. The ride the grapplers gave Coach Drennan capped a six-year run to the top of the wrestling world of Tennessee and started a dynasty that has been the most successful and honored at Father Ryan and in the TSSAA.
Before that day, wrestling was considered a secondary sport, overshadowed by more popular programs like football and basketball. When the wrestling program began in 1962, the sport was not widely followed among high schools. During the early days, wrestling in Tennessee was mostly isolated in Chattanooga where many of the big private schools were located. The sport made its way across the state, where more schools adopted the program. Father Ryan’s earliest local rivals were Donelson and the Tennessee School for the Blind.
It all began in 1962 with Father Fennell as coach and about a dozen curious athletes, each wondering how wrestling was (or wasn’t) like the ‘rasslin they saw on TV. Within two years Joe Drennan ‘57 became coach, and by 1967, Father Ryan was on the map with its first state champion, Yogi Walsh ‘67. By 1969 with their first team state championship, the center of wrestling in Tennessee had moved to Middle Tennessee. Nineteen team titles and 80 state individual champions later, Father Ryan still is THE state’s standard for excellence. This year we celebrate five decades of wrestling success.
Father Ryan’s first wrestlers were actually plucked from the football team, Drennan’s idea that wrestling would provide offseason training. “Drennan was like a second parent to us,” says Donnelly, also a former football player. “He gave everyone a chance to wrestle and made sure the next class had enough experience to step up for the following year.” That coaching philosophy still extends to today. After Drennan, Bobby Garmon ’65 became head coach, followed by Pat Simpson ’74 who has coached for the last three decades. Drennan led the Irish to two state titles (‘69 and‘71), Garmon led them to the ‘74 and ‘77 crowns and Simpson has been at the helm for the other 15.
The 1969 team was the first team outside of Chattanooga ever to win a wrestling state championship. Following an undefeated season, the Irish toppled highly favored Notre Dame, whom they had already beaten by a 20-19 score in a heated Sunday afternoon match in Nashville late in the regular season. Although Notre Dame had more individual champions, 10 of 12 wrestlers from Father Ryan placed in the championship, including two state champions: Scott Brunette ‘69 and Bubba Donnelly ‘69. Donnelly wins again.
Even in the early ‘60s, practices were held every day during the season, including weekends. Wrestlers weighed in before school, and if they did not make their weight class, would spend lunch running.
11
Proper practice venues and equipment were also hard to come by at the time. Occasionally, the team would practice in classrooms or on the stage. The wrestling mats were made of horsehair and vinyl, a rough and heavy alternative to today’s foam mats. To raise money for a new mat, the team sold donuts on Saturday, though as Donnelly remembers it, there was a backlash against that tactic: “It was hard not to eat the donuts, and we were expected to stay in shape!” On top of that, wrestlers lacked enough uniforms, or singlets, so they were forced to share between matches. But from those inauspicious beginnings came a program that has become one of the most popular at Father Ryan. The number of wrestling alumni tops 500 and competition for spots on teams each year is heated and demanding. The success has also spread the interest to the grade schools with many a pre-teen student testing his skills on the mat through Nashville Catholic Wrestling.
1969 State Champions
The list of outstanding achievements by individuals and teams is long, but here are a few to highlight: Tim Wilson ‘72 and Eric Wood ‘72—each won backto-back titles in ‘71 and ‘72, with Wood doing it in two different weight classes, 155 and 185.
1972 Champions
Johnny Drennan ‘85—captured the state title his senior year and then passed away from cancer in 1986. For his courage, the Middle Tennessee Wrestling Coach’s Association named its award for the best wrestler of the year after Johnny. The 1988, 1998 and 2000 teams—each won the Dual and Individual Team State Titles in the same year. Michael Carletto ‘93—won back to back titles in ‘92 and ‘93. The Dunning brothers—Raymond ‘03 and Whitt ‘05–and Wes Wesley ‘10 are Father Ryan’s only three-time state champions, with Raymond claiming titles from 2001-03 Whitt from 2003-05 and Wes from 2008-10.
1988 State Champion Seniors
Cole Moseley ‘12—holds the record for the most wins by a wrestler in a Father Ryan uniform. Mike Hooker ‘12—who wrestled for Father Ryan as a senior after starring at McCallie, set the TSSAA record for career wins, wins in a season and career wins by pins. Today, the wrestling program boasts a new practice facility, the Patrick Simpson ‘74 Wrestling Facility in the new Jim Carell Fitness Center. Named for the long-time coach—who wrestled on the ‘74 championship team—the facility— adds 3,000 square feet of space to the wrestling arena. And it honors a man whose three plus decades have produced 60 state champion wrestlers. In fact, this year four alumni are wrestling at the collegiate level after earning athletic scholarships.
2009 State Champion Seniors
With players recognized and respected across the region for their unwavering discipline and sportsmanship, the wrestling program has earned a place in school and state history. Thanks to the leadership of its coaches and players, past and present, the Irish wrestlers continue to build on its 50-year legacy and hold the torch for aspiring athletes everywhere.
