Annual Report Every gift to Father Ryan is needed and appreciated, and every gift is put to good use, whether it is to provide need-based financial aid, construct, renovate, or maintain facilities or develop new academic programs. Publishing an Annual Report each year is a small way in which Father Ryan High School can publicly recognize those who have made financial contributions to the school.

Gifts included in the lists on these pages were received between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014. Please take a few moments to read the names of alumni, current parents, alumni parents, friends, faculty and staff—as well as businesses, foundations and organizations—that made a contribution last year. Because of their support, Father Ryan High School can continue to be an experience of the living Gospel while challenging students to reach their academic, spiritual and personal potential.

from the president Dear Father Ryan Community: We talk about our strategic planning process in a straightforward phrase—to create the national standard in Catholic education. In and out of our classrooms we strive to give that phrase life through our tradition of Faith, Knowledge and Service. In 2013-2014 it was loudly and beautifully expressed from Nashville to colleges and households across the country. It began in the early fall when we received news from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Once again, our seniors excelled, something we have celebrated each year, with six students receiving recognition as Finalists or Commended Scholars. This achievement was a tribute to these students, their academic focus, the excellence of our faculty, and the preparation they received from their elementary school teachers. In the athletic realm Father Ryan also created national standards. We began our two-year salute to the role our school played in integrating the South, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the integration of sports in 1963. The decision by Msgr. James Hitchcock ’39 and Coach Bill Derrick ’48 to play Willie Brown ’65 and Jesse Porter ’64 that season marked the first time that any high school in the state had started an African-American player. In honoring the significance of that moment, we made the historic decision to retire Willie’s #50—across every sport at Father Ryan—the first time we have ever done this. This is a tribute to his courage and his impact on our community and this region. We also took a stand, one that no other high school has taken, to support workers rights and social justice by refusing to advertise for athletic apparel manufacturers who do not respect workers’ rights. The decision to cover logos with the Jerusalem Cross and to reject any financial support from these manufacturers was another strong statement of our mission and a powerful message for our students and our community. We also honored many more alumni, such as the Langdons, Jim ’54

and Pat ’58, who were the honorees at the annual Legacy Gala. We said good-bye to generous supporters, such as Jim Carell ’54, whose impact on our campus will resound for years. And we said thank you to the $10 million bequest from Joel ’36 and Mary Sue Cheek, the largest gift ever received, and one that will enable hundreds of young men and women to experience Father Ryan as a student, known and loved. These successes—and countless others in our classrooms, at our athletic venues and throughout the community—reflect the best of our students and our school. They speak to our mission in vital and uplifting ways, reminding us of the reasons we support Catholic education and Father Ryan High School. Your support makes these accomplishments possible, providing settings, equipment and opportunities that bring out the best in these young men and women. Your record-setting support of the Annual Fund, of financial aid and our long-term goals support our fundamental principle of being a living example of the Gospels, every day. I am pleased to present the 2013-2014 Annual Report of Father Ryan High School, saluting the donors whose commitment to Father Ryan and Catholic education continue a legacy that has had an impact on thousands. Dear Father Ryan Alumni and Friends, It is my pleasure to provide this introduction to the 2013-2014 Annual Report. By all standards the 2013-2014 academic year produced exceptional examples of the caliber and character of Father Ryan’s students. Our students showcased their commitment to our traditions—through classroom performance, athletic achievement and service roles here and beyond our city—and reflected the benefits of a Catholic education in the Diocese of Nashville.

Your support of all of our efforts is critical to the school’s success, and I am grateful to all of you for your generosity and commitment. There are unique challenges associated with providing a Catholic education, and your contributions and sacrifices make the difference in our success. The year was also marked by continued strength across numerous financial and enrollment measurements. Total enrollment for the 2013-2014 year was more than 950, marking the seventh consecutive year of growth in the student body. In addition, the admissions season produced another large freshman class, and strong retention numbers from the upper classes resulted in a larger student body for the upcoming year.

Our donor support was strong and steady, both in terms of capital assistance and Annual Fund giving. The latter set another record, for the third consecutive year, topping $625,000 for the year. This performance featured more than 50% participation from our parents and solid participation from the alumni body.. Father Ryan completed the fiscal year in exceptional financial shape. It was strengthened by the Annual Fund’s record-setting performance, the generosity of our friends for capital support, and the solid management of our financial team. Thanks to the leadership of the administration, the Board of Trustees and all our donors, this school has been able to continue its mission and expand its services throughout the Catholic community. We are already seeing the results from the implementation of our strategic plan, and I am confident in the ongoing success of this historic and vital institution.

Endowment for Tuition Assistance

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES Many giving opportunities exist at Father Ryan High School, offering you the ability to join with us in advancing the mission of the school. Your support allows us to continue our efforts to prepare our students—and the campus—for the future. Father Ryan Annual Fund: In many ways, gifts to the Annual Fund are the most important form of support Father Ryan receives, because these gifts fund day-to-day operations and essential programs. As tuition alone does not cover the cost of educating each student, income from the Annual Fund is a critical supplement to the budget that allows Father Ryan to meet its operational expenses. A contribution to the Annual Fund benefits every student every day.

Endowment Fund: While the Annual Fund might be thought of as the “checking account” for day-to-day operations, the Endowment Fund might be considered the “savings account.” This fund ensures that Father Ryan High School has a permanent source of operating revenue. Gifts are made to the principal of this fund and a portion of the annual earnings are applied to expenses. The principal remains untouched so that it can continue to grow and provide the school with a consistent and dependable source of revenue year after year. Within the general Endowment Fund are several named funds benefiting specific areas of the school including: Mr. and Mrs. John N. Andrews, Sr. Golf Fund, and the Gilmore Library Fund and Library Endowment Funds.

Restricted Gifts: The donation of restricted gifts allows our supporters to further causes that are of special interest to them. Restricted gifts include contributions that are designated for a particular purpose, group or activity at the school such as band, athletics, co-curricular activities, and student and alumni events.

Gifts to the endowment that are restricted for tuition assistance provide a permanent source of financial aid to Father Ryan students. Gifts are made to the principal and families are awarded need-based financial aid from the earnings each year. Outside of general tuition assistance, gifts may be further designated to a specific named scholarship fund. Within the Endowment for Tuition Assistance are many named scholarship funds which include: • • • • •

Bequests: A planned estate gift is a thoughtful way to ensure that Father Ryan is prepared for the future. Estate gifts can be designated for particular programs or they can be used to help fund the school’s endowment. All donors who have included Father Ryan in their wills are recognized as honored members of the Father James Black ‘64 Society.

Named Funds Donors may establish named endowed funds for particular areas of interest at Father Ryan High School. Among endowed funds that currently exist:

The Charlie Green ’99 Service Scholarship: Charlie’s family established this fund in his memory, to be awarded annually to a Father Ryan senior for his/her service to the community.

The Aurelia Varallo Mariani Scholarship Fund: Established by the Nashville Catholic Business Women’s League, this award recognizes a young woman’s academic achievements as well as her high moral standards and service to her grade school and parish. It is a fouryear award.

The John P. (Jack) Long ’69 Scholarship: Established in memory of Jack Long, this scholarship is given each year to a well-rounded and deserving student.

The Bridges Scholarship Funds: The Bridges Program of Father Ryan High School was created to supplement the school’s existing tuition assistance funds. Gifts to the Bridges Program “bridge the gap” between the school’s ability to award tuition assistance money and the demonstrated need of the applicant. Donors can designate the use of the donation for a particular parish, parish school or diocesan school, academics, arts or athletics.

Special Events: Special events for Father Ryan High School provide funds for tuition assistance, extracurricular activities and operating support. A few of Father Ryan’s annual special events are the Legacy Gala, Lou Graham Alumni Golf Tournament and Veterans Pride 5K.

The Charles W. Pellettieri ’50 Award: Established in 2000 by Lillian Ford in memory of her brother and in honor of Msgr. George Rohling for his influence on her brother’s life, the annual award is given based on a writing competition.

The Rev. James A. Black ’64 Memorial Fund: This three-year scholarship is awarded each year to a freshman who best exemplifies Catholic scholarship and Christian leadership. The Kevin Paul Davis ’09 Scholarship: Presented to an outstanding Father Ryan student who exemplifies the spirit of Kevin Davis. The Spirit of Mike: This award is given annually to a senior member of the percussion section of the band in the memory of Mike Mayer. The recipient is selected by the band directors. The Will Miller ’61 Award for Excellence in the Arts: This annual award is given to a student who demonstrates excellence and promise in the visual or performing arts.

Father Ryan High School depends on this annual support from alumni, parents and friends to make up the difference between the revenue provided by tuition and the actual cost of educating each student. Because of the recordbreaking support of the donors listed below, more than $626,000 was raised during the 2013–2014 fiscal year through new contributions and the fulfillment of previously existing pledges. Each year, the Annual Fund gifts are equivalent to the earnings from a $10 million endowment, making the Annual Fund today a “Living Endowment.”

BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2013–2014 The Vision: Our Strategic Goal Following the evolution of the core values and core purpose, the strategic planners developed a vision and our strategic goal, to be realized by 2015. It will be transformational while remaining true to the core mission and identity of Father Ryan High School. By 2015, Father Ryan High School will be nationally recognized as the measure of excellence for secondary Catholic education. This concrete vision comes with several strategic issues that represent both obstacles to overcome and opportunities to seize over the course of the strategic plan’s implementation. As Father Ryan works to realize this goal of being the national measure of excellence for secondary Catholic education, we have addressed:

strategic plan for 2015 For almost 90 years, Father Ryan has been an exceptional model for Catholic education, with a reputation that continues to resonate throughout Nashville and beyone. In fact, many Father Ryan graduates are distinguishing themselves in venues across the nation and many parts of the world, using their Father Ryan experience to bring about remarkable changes in people’s lives. As we look toward 2015, the 90th anniversary of our founding, we continue to broaden our thinking about how father Ryan can excel in the realm of Catholic education. Our strategic plan, developed with input from parents, faculty, staff, 40

alumni, students and clergy, is enabling us to plan for our orderly growth. The goal is bold--to create a new standard in Catholic education—and we are well on our way to achieving that goal.
