Q A

Q: Favorite assignment at Father Ryan? Why? A: My favorite assignment was a research project I did for AP Spanish Language and Culture. We had to research six sources from Spanish newspapers, radio stations, and websites to delve deeper into the course’s six main themes. This allowed me to explore and learn about issues in the Spanish-speaking world of which I was not aware, which gave me a curiosity about Spanish culture that I still have today. Q: Best advice you received from a Father Ryan teacher? A: The best advice I received was from Mr. Lancaster: “Put first things first, and everything else will come after it.” To me, this means that if I focus on the truly important things, everything that I might worry about that’s less important will work out as it should. Q: What are you looking forward to next year? A: I am looking forward to exploring academically through my liberal arts education, as well as taking more foreign language and culture classes and traveling abroad through the Gabelli Presidential Scholars Program.

Elizabeth has been recognized for achieving a perfect score on the English, Science, and Reading sections of the ACT. She has had the highest grade in Modern World History, Dance II, Latin II, and AP US History. Elizabeth was honored as a Father James Black Award for Excellence Finalist and has been recognized as an outstanding student in several of her classes. She has also been recognized on the Principal’s list. Elizabeth has held leadership roles as a Sophomore Retreat Leader, Freshman Night Leader and Head of Sponsorship and Fundraising for Relay for Life. At Father Ryan Elizabeth is involved in cross country, Relay for Life Committee, Youth in Government, Student Ambassador, Peer Mentor, Catholic Heart Work Camp, and was one of two students appointed to the 2017-2018 Father Ryan Strategic Plan Steering Committee. Outside of school Elizabeth has been involved in SEARCH, Cottage Cove, St. Thomas West Hospital, Special Olympics, Martha O’Bryan Center, babysitting, and as a swim instructor. She has received the Redhawk Excellence Scholarship and University Academic Scholar from Miami University; the Distinguished Tennessean Award, UT Volunteer Scholarship, and Hope Scholarship from University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and The Distinguished Scholars Award from Tulane. University of Georgia awarded her the Classic Scholars Award; and Clemson University recognized her with the Clemson University Scholarship and Out of State Tuition Scholarship. Elizabeth will attend Clemson University where she plans to study Microbiology.

Q: What was your favorite activity at Father Ryan? Why? A: Relay for Life because I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been affected in one way or another by cancer, and I loved giving back in a way that touched so many people.

Q

Q: Best advice you received from a Father Ryan teacher? A: Don’t let the past interfere with the present. This was a major theme in some of the books we read in AP Lit, so while Ms. Brewer wasn’t exactly intending to give us advice, I still think it is a lesson that can be applied outside the classroom. Q: Looking back on your high school years, what one piece of advice would you offer to any incoming freshman? A: I know it is cliché, but four years is a long time to spend worrying about what other people think about you and trying to conform to their standards. Just do what makes you happy (within reason), and you won’t have any regrets. Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? A: I see myself as an oncologist, possibly a pediatric oncologist, who also does research involving cancer treatment.
