The School to Home Online Connection
Dear Father Ryan Family, Mission Statement As a Catholic diocesan high school, Father Ryan’s mission is to be an experience of the living Gospel while challenging students to reach their spiritual, academic, and personal potential.
Vision Statement Father Ryan seeks to be a superior Catholic high school, providing excellence in religious and moral formation, academics, athletics, and the arts while remaining accessible to those seeking an education in the Catholic Tradition.
Welcome back to Father Ryan for the 2012-2013 school year! My name is Michael La Haie and I am the new Dean of Students. I am very excited to be at Father Ryan, as I have always wanted to be part of this community since I moved to Nashville in 1993. Over the years I have participated in many events at Father Ryan, including Math Day as a teacher at Holy Rosary Academy and St. Ann School, as well as attending diocesan workshops and other meetings on campus. My son, Andrew, graduated from Father Ryan in 2009. During his time here, I got to know many parents, faculty and staff members. My wife, Mary, and I also have a daughter, Sara, a 2011 graduate of St. Cecilia Academy. We are members of St. Henry parish and last year we enjoyed our first year as “empty-nesters.” During the last seven years, I have been the Dean of Student Affairs at St. Cecilia Academy. In my role at SCA, I monitored and guided the school climate and supervised student safety, security, attendance and discipline. I also managed the school calendar, reviewed and updated the parent/student handbook and assisted with PowerSchool management as well as supervising the athletic director, the activities director, the personal counselor and the dining hall manager. Finally, I was the administrative contact between the school and the Parents’ Association. I accepted the position as Dean of Students at FRHS knowing how important this role is at any school and also knowing the Dean of Students is not always the most popular person on campus. I will work hard to gain the trust of students, parents, faculty and staff by being honest and consistent in all areas of service. I plan to be present to the students daily in the hallways of the academic building, the library, the theater, the cloister building, the dining hall, the athletic complex and the parking lots. I know so many parents through St. Henry, St. Cecilia, and being a member of the Diocese of Nashville for the past 19 years. I look forward to meeting you all in my role as Dean of Students, and I look forward to getting to know your children. If there is anything I can do to help you or your child, please don’t hesitate to call or email me. Sincerely, Michael La Haie Dean of Students lahaiem@fatherryan.org

Every September 11th, Father Ryan students and faculty gather to remember the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon with a prayer service. We invite all alumni and parents who are first responders to attend and receive a blessing. If you are a police officer, fire fighter or EMT and would like to participate, please RSVP to Tim Forbes, Dean of Campus Ministry and Student Life, at forbest@fatherryany.org. The service will begin at 8:55 a.m. September 11 in the Catignani-Drennan Fieldhouse. After the 9/11 Prayer Service, we will present honorary diplomas to family members of former students who left before graduating to serve their country in WWII. This initiative is called the Hero Project and is a special committee of the FRHS Alumni Board. We look forward to honoring these brave men with an honorary diploma. The Jim Carell Fitness Center Opens To Rousing Reviews Over 1,000 of the Irish faithful were on hand Saturday, August 6th for the dedication, blessing and opening of the new Jim Carell Fitness Center at Father Ryan High School. With Bishop David Choby ‘65 presiding at Mass and Mayor Karl Dean exhorting the assemblage with “Go, Irish!”, the day proved to be a landmark one in the school’s history. The new Center is a highlight in and of itself, with over 15,000 square feet of new space -- including a new football locker room; new fitness and strength room that at 4,500 square feet is five times the size of the old one; the Patrick Simpson ‘74 Wrestling Facility; a sports medicine room and a new team room flanked by trophy cases showcasing the school’s rich athletic history. Another 15,000 square feet of existing space was renovated to provide new locker rooms, offices, classroom space and meeting spaces for the school.
There were some emotional highlights as well including: • 400+ school’s athletes and coaches that came to the floor of the Catignani-Drennan Fieldhouse just before Mass ended to receive the Athlete’s Blessing from Bishop Choby ‘65, starting a new tradition at Father Ryan. • The Bishop’s sermon and Mayor Dean’s remarks that echoed the Father Ryan tradition and moved the crowd. • More than 20 administrators, donors, board members, coaches and students who cut the ribbon to open the facility as more than 400 of our guests looked on. • Our band that was in attendance and drummed up the spirit with the Fight Song as the crowd headed into the Fitness Center. • The new trophy cases that showcase trophies from past and present, including a group presented by the National Catholic Basketball Tournament from the 1930s and special uniforms loaned for the event by Bill Conrad ‘75 and Rosemary Ducklo Sexton SBA ‘62. If you did not have the opportunity to view the new Jim Carell Fitness Center during the opening weekend, there will be more opportunities to do so in the near future. For more information about naming opportunities in the new Center, please contact Brooke Reusch, Director of Advancement, at 615.269.7926 or reuschb@fatherryan.org. Bishop Choby ‘65 holds the ribbon while Mr. Jim Carell ‘54 cuts it, marking the opening of the Jim Carell Fitness Center

Theology Speaker Series Continues... The Theology Speaker Series will continue for a sixth year throughout the course of the 2012-2013 school year. This series is planned in conjunction with the junior Theology curriculum, Social Justice, and the Service Learning Curriculum. The series provides a platform for learning about and discussing current social and moral issues in our community, as well as examining our obligations in responding to these issues as Catholics. The goal of the series is to provide students with an opportunity to apply class objectives to real issues and begin participating in an environment where continuing discussion, awareness, advocacy and education are fostered. All programs will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Father Ryan High School Center for the Performing Arts unless otherwise noted. Families and community members are encouraged to attend. We hope you can join us for our first presentation Wednesday, September 26th. Marissa Castellanos, a social worker at Catholic Charities in Louisville, will present on Human Trafficking. Other dates for this school year are as follows: Thursday, October 18, 2012 Thursday, November 29, 2012 Thursday, January 17, 2013 Wednesday, February 20, 2013
Annual 5K to Honor Veterans
Annual Fund Success:
Thank You in Advance for Your Support Father Ryan High School Faculty and Staff continue to inspire our community with gifts to the Annual Fund. For the fourth consecutive year, they have given to the Annual Fund at a 100% participation rate raising over $30,000 for our school’s most important needs. This has been a great way to kick-off the 2012-2013 school year. This year’s goal is $500,000 in gifts to the Annual Fund for this school. Our goal is for our Father Ryan families to also reach 100% participation. This year’s Annual Fund Parent Chairs are Sandy and Gary Guidry, parents of Kate ’12. Their committee members are Deb and John Bakewell, Susan and Darren Rider, James and Jude Fay and Gina and Angelo Canonico. Income from the Annual Fund is included in the operational budget for the year and will help cover the gap that exists between revenue generated by tuition and the true cost of educating our students. Your tax-deductible gift will make it possible for us to provide professional development opportunities for our faculty, new equipment and technology for our classrooms, maintenance for our current facilities, and address any critical needs that arise throughout the year. Most importantly, gifts to the Annual Fund help keep tuition increases to a minimum so that we can continue to provide quality, Catholic education to a diversity of families. Please know that a gift of any amount makes an impact and moves us closer to our goal. This month, every family will receive an Annual Fund appeal letter and will have the opportunity to participate. Please keep in mind that every dollar given to the Annual Fund stays on campus and benefits the student body. When considering financial gifts to the school, there is no better way to support the mission of Father Ryan than by making a contribution to the Annual Fund. For more information or to give online, visit www.fatherryan.org/giving.
The Nashville Guild of the Catholic Medical Association After a successful ten year run as the Irish Pride 5K, Father Ryan is renaming the race that raises money for tuition assistance the Veterans Pride 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run. “Since its inception, our 5K has been held on or near Veterans Day and flanks our annual Veterans Day Breakfast. We want to expand this event to formally honor the men and women whose commitment to our country ensures our safety and inspires us all,” explains Director of Alumni and Communications Angela Mills ’85. The idea took hold when last year’s race director Mary Beth Brocato ’87 added “I run in honor of…” stickers for participants to recognize a veteran. If runners did not know a veteran personally, they had the option to run for one of Father Ryan’s alumni veterans. The 2012 Veterans Pride 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run will take place on Saturday, November 10th at 8:00 a.m. Whether you run competitively, for fitness or to support a cause, this event is for you. And as always, veterans run free. For more details on the race, visit www.fatherryan.org/veteranspride5k. The Veterans Pride 5K Committee is looking for parents, students and alumni to help make our event a success. We need volunteers to promote the event, solicit sponsorships or door prizes, and work on race day. Most importantly, we want you to join us for a beautiful morning run or walk. If you are interested in serving on the committee, contact Angela Mills at millsa@fatherryan.org or 269-7926 for more information.

STANDARDIZED TESTING On Wednesday October 17, 2012, all the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen will be involved in taking a national standardized test. Since all high school students have to take either the ACT or the SAT in order to be admitted to college, we give our students three opportunities to take practice tests. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT which is a practice version of the SAT. All students are required to take the tests on October 17th. Students will attend their first period class and school will dismiss at noon after the students finish the tests. All of the students taking the PSAT will have some opportunities in their English and Math classes to work on some practice questions and to review test taking strategies. This test measures critical thinking skills that are important for success in college. It includes critical reading, math problem-solving, and writing skills. Taking this test will enable students to: - Get feedback about their critical academic skills - Seek information from colleges - Practice for the SAT reasoning test - Enter scholastic competition (junior only)

Dear Parents, As we begin a new school year, I want to remind you of one of the most important expectations we have for students at Father Ryan. Students are required to wear their student ID cards throughout each school day. We have a beautiful and open campus and would like to take proactive and practical measures to provide a safe and secure learning environment. As parents, you are entrusting your children to the Father Ryan faculty and staff and as such, we have a responsibility to both teach and protect the students by having this practical approach to student identification. This visual identification insures that we, as a school, always know that the individuals who are on this campus are the ones who are supposed to be on this campus. In addition, it is a great way to further our mission of knowing and loving your student in an engaged and responsible way. Sincerely, Michael La Haie Dean of Students

College Bound COLLEGE COUNSELING NEWS The Office of College Counseling submits the majority of our documentation electronically to colleges including:
• Student Transcripts • School Report Forms • Counselor Recommendation Letters In order for this procedure to work effectively, seniors will be asked to do the following: • Use The Common Applica- tion whenever possible in applying for admission to colleges. When a student does not use The Common App at a Common App college, we must MAIL supporting documentation instead of sending it electronically, which delays the documentation being received by your college. Access The Common App at www.commonapp.org.
____________________ COLLEGE INFORMATION ON THE WEB The College Counseling Office provides the following online information for parents and students: • Preparing and Applying for College • College Visits and Local Events • ACT and SAT test dates and test prep information • College Scholarships • Summer Opportunities http://www.fatherryan.org/college This resource, used in conjunction with information sessions held throughout the year, provides a thorough guide for parents and students as they navigate the college process. As students prepare for college admission, remember the most important thing students can do to ensure their academic success at the college level is to enroll in the most challenging curriculum appropriate and establish an academic work ethic that will prepare you for college and for life.

In light of this fact, students at Father Ryan High School are required to have an ACT or SAT score on their transcripts prior to the opening of school in the fall of their senior year.
Scholarships
A list of all scholarship information that has been received by the College Counseling Office is available on the Father Ryan High School webpage. Many colleges and universities will have special scholarship applications that must be completed before a student is eligible for a scholarship. Other colleges and universities will award scholarships based on information required in the admission process. College Visit Days Father Ryan High School supports students visiting colleges and universities so that the students and parents may make a more informed decision for post secondary education. It is preferred that these visits be in conjunction with school holidays and/or breaks outside of academic time. Understanding that this is difficult, the school has allotted seniors whose attendance is in good standing three days for visits and juniors in good standing two days. Please note that these days do affect the number of days missed in terms of the overall attendance policy. In addition, the school requires that the students give two school days notice when planning to take a college day. The students must not only obtain permission from their parents/ guardians, but must also give their teachers advance notice so that assignments may be given, tests/quizzes may be taken in advance, projects turned in early, speeches given, etc., if the teacher deems it necessary. Permission slips are available in the Attendance Office. Each of the student’s teachers and guardians must sign the form granting permission for the student’s absence. If the number of students seeking a college day absence on the same days is deemed excessive (ten a day) by the administration, permission will be granted to those students who are first to meet the requirements of the school and who are in good standing. If advanced permission is not obtained, students will receive an unexcused absence and zeroes for academic work missed will be given. No student or parent should call the student in sick when that student is actually on a college visit. If this occurs, the student will receive detentions and a Personal Integrity Code violation. It is our hope that all students will deal with this privilege in a responsible manner. Any questions should be referred to Michael La Haie, Dean of Students, or Sara Hayes, Academic Dean. For more details, refer to the Parent/Student Handbook for absences due to college visits.
