Dear Friend of Father Ryan, Welcome to the 33rd Annual Legacy Gala to benefit Father Ryan High School. There’s a special sound to this year’s Legacy Gala, a sound of music and musical traditions that are being heard all the way to New York City. For tonight we salute one of the best-known parts of the Father Ryan experience—our Marching Band. From its days as Tennessee’s top band in the 1940s and 50s to its resurgence in 1979 to its national ranking and recognition today, the Marching Band has produced a sound that celebrates Father Ryan’s spirit and its Tradition of Faith, Knowledge and Service. Every one of our band members embodies this tradition and brings their distinctive tones to this remarkable campus. We are particularly proud to salute Jeff Schletzer as our Gala Honoree for 2012. For 30 years Jeff has been the inspirational leader of the band—our own Sergeant Pepper—championing this program and extending it to schools and communities throughout the Diocese. With his unique style and humble, caring approach, he has brought this program to the national stage for the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. He has done this while being a voice for Catholic education and for the hard work and commitment that make our students and alumni such exceptional parts of their communities. Thank you for celebrating this legacy tonight…and for supporting Father Ryan every day. We who have the honor of serving this school are humbled by your support as we continue to create a new standard in Catholic education. Sincerely,

Jim McIntyre President

Dearest Friends of Father Ryan High School, We are so excited to finally see the 33rd Annual Father Ryan High School Legacy Gala honoring Jeff Schletzer come to fruition this special evening. We were thrilled to lead the Legacy Gala and its committees, which were all inspired by your strong support and the dedication and willingness of our very own Father Ryan volunteers here tonight. All of them, both alumni and current parents, gave of their time, talents, and treasure to bring for you what we all feel will be an exceptional and memorable experience honoring Jeff’s academic excellence and his contributions to making Father Ryan High School a leader in Catholic education. We cannot thank enough the Legacy Gala sponsors and patrons who continue to support our desire to be the national standard in Catholic education, who share our dedication to ensure our students receive the highest quality Catholic education, and who passionately believe, as we all do, that our Father Ryan students will become accomplished individuals prepared for life to serve our country, environment, and the world communities we live in. On behalf of Father Ryan High School and the volunteer committees who bring you this evening’s festivities, we thank you for your presence here tonight. We hope you have a terrific time this evening and continue to support and believe in our commitment to work closely together in service of our Father Ryan High School beyond this 33rd Annual Father Ryan High School Legacy Gala. Sincerely yours,

Claudia and Paul Bell Parents of E.J. ’12 and Sebastian ‘13

Setting the Musical Standard at Father Ryan: Jeff Schletzer “It’s all about the kids.” “It’s the kids that made it happen.” “These are great kids.” Familiar phrases, stated as regularly as a metronome’s pulse, describing the success of the Father Ryan Band program. Delivered by its leader, who responds this way every time someone attempts to praise him, deflecting every attempt as ably as a goalkeeper bats away a puck. Said proudly by the man who thrice turned down this job 30 years ago, very content to live in McEwen and teach music and band there and to watch his family grow. A man who accepted the Father Ryan job and then wondered what he had gotten his wife and young family into; when he discovered the promised 80 talented band members proved to be 25 somewhat interested, somewhat musically inclined and only sometimes focused high schoolers. “It’s all about the kids.” Really!? Well tonight, Jeff, it’s also about you. For what these kids have accomplished over 30 plus years is in very large part about you, your philosophy, your dedication, your humility and your kindness. And for all those reasons and so many more, Father Ryan is proud to salute Jeff Schletzer as the honoree of the 2012 Legacy Gala. Jeff’s achievements are many, accumulated through consistent years of work since he earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Austin Peay State University, the place where he met his wife, Sheree, an accomplished band performer, particularly with a twirling baton. Arriving at Father Ryan in 1981, he became the fine arts department chair, co-director of the marching band, Winter Drumline, the jazz band. He has played percussion professionally for 20 years, is a member of MTSBOA, and has served on the WGI Percussion Advisory Board as well as the MTSBOA Executive Board. In addition to his instruction at Father Ryan, he teaches band at St. Matthew, St. Bernard and assists at St. Henry and Christ the King. But let us make this clear…while he is the honoree of the Legacy Gala, his legacy is far from finished. With all the success of this year’s band, there’s a little thing called the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade coming up, with choreography to plan and music to select and kids to prepare. More important, there are new kids coming next year, eager to feel that sensation, to

get a taste of this experience, to be a part of something that is worldfamous and to be bettered by being in the band. Get the band parents and the students and the alumni to talk about Jeff’s and Jereme Frye’s and Derek’s and Dustin’s accomplishments Jeff, 1981. and there’s nary a mention of a trophy, of a victory. Oh, they appreciate the triumphs—just look at the trophies in the band room, so many of them, and each so tall that they probably could be laid end to end and reach the top of the Empire State Building. But focusing on those is missing the point. Jeff will tell you so…those are symbols, reflections of something developed inside. The lessons are about much more, about what those instruments teach… perseverance, hard work, time management, teamwork, humility and belief, in oneself and in each other. Listen to the message…delivered over and over, with no embarrassment, no doubt. “We are a family.” Then listen to why. 8

Jeff performing at Gala

Jeff and Sheree with daughters Kristin and Courtney, both 2008 grads.

“We are a family.” Everyone matters, everyone contributes, everyone performs. And more important, everyone helps everyone else so everyone can succeed.

other bands tell Jeff and the parents and the kids that they want to be like Father Ryan. “We are a family.” And that means everyone connected with the band. When a band parent was sick at home battling cancer, the band bus showed up at her house, assembled on the parent’s lawn and played the fight song, eliciting a smile from her weakened face that lifted her and everyone’s spirits.

“We are a family.” Not only do Derek and Dustin serve with their dad as band directors, but they started on the ground floor—literally. As infants and toddlers they crawled and played on the floor of the cafeteria on Elliston Place (sorry, Sheree) as Jeff directed the band.

Ask the band directors for the source of this spirit, this caring, this environment and the answer is unanimous and immediate—Jeff. If every family has a paterfamilias, then Jeff is the band’s, the patermusicas. If ever a family of children is a reflection of its patermusicas, it’s Father Ryan. And if Jeff will forgive us for shining the spotlight on him this evening, we’ll turn it on him proudly; for what he’s provided us.

“We are a family.” Think that a band member’s place in the band ends with graduation? Then explain why every uniform bears the initials “MM” in memory of Mike Mayer ‘96 and the Spirit of Mike Award is given each year to salute his memory, recognizing that he is still as much a part of the band as he was when he drummed. “We are a family.” Yes, a member of the larger band family, made up of hardworking, committed young men and women and band directors across the country, and their work is to be respected. That’s why when the band wins an honor, a competition or an accolade, they never…never…applaud for themselves. They are humble, classy. Even when they won the Esprit de Corps Award this year at Grand Nationals, the award presented to ONE band from the hundreds competing from across the country, presented to the band that best exemplifies the spirit of Marching Band, there were no visible high fives, no chanting, no celebrating…there was gratitude, appreciation and “thank you.” Maybe that’s why

When prodded to choose the best band or the best period in his career, Jeff smiles and declines, saying they’re all special, and you know he’s telling you the truth. But he does say that the announcement of Macy’s was special, because it recognized every single band student, from the very beginning, because he knows that these kids wouldn’t be going to New York City if not for the legacy of those who went before. You know, he’s right, It is all about the kids. And we are grateful. We are family. 9

From a Closet to the Star.

1946 Marching Band

1981 Irish Guards

When the band program was reinvigorated in 1979 at Father Ryan, the idea of Father Ryan student-musicians spending Thanksgiving Day in New York City seemed as likely as the band winning a regional competition. But 33 years later, both ideas have become reality. From that glorified closet next to the cafeteria on Elliston Place to the star on 34th Street in New York, the band has been marching proudly for Father Ryan.

The band in performance in the mid 80s.

the featured performers at a recent European tour. The Marching Band has been recognized as the best in local competitions and the classiest, most professional and polite performers in the field. But this past year has been something special. From the announcement of its selection to march in the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the band has been on a triumphant run.

From its beginnings over 65 years ago in a place not too far from the ’79 band room, Father Ryan’s Marching Band has built a legacy that extends deep into our history. In the 1940s and 1950s under the direction of Dorothy “Dot” Topmiller, the Band was known for its precision performances, sharp uniforms and strong musicality, and they demonstrated it at events across the state. For 2011 Marching Band some reason, however, the band slipped in popularity in the late 1950s, disappearing from our yearbooks as an activity and remembered only when a student stumbled across a set of drums or a trumpet that had been relegated to a storage room. The music was stilled…until 1979 as the band reemerged as the Irish Guards and reestablished the Marching Band as a symbol of excellence and achievement and a proud part of the Father Ryan tradition. Since the arrival of Jeff Schletzer as the band director, the Band program has marched to a new level of achievement. The Winter Drumline has been among the best in the nation for years, regularly presenting the most creative and engaging shows at major competitions—ask members of the national band community which bands they want to see and Father Ryan’s is always on their short list—and being

• First overall in the Southeastern Regional for Bands of America • First in the Florida Invitational • 2nd in the Nation in the National Bands of America competition with an overall #15 ranking among all bands • One national champion band member, Joe Selikoff ‘12, for tenor drums. • The sole recipient at nationals of the Al Castronovo Memorial ESPRIT DE CORPS Award, honoring the one group most exhibiting pride, spirit, enthusiasm, friendliness, and unity of purpose for the activity of marching bands in this country. •And four of Father Ryan’s 2011-12 National Merit Honorees are band members. As we salute the band’s success at the 2012 Legacy Gala, we are reminded of the dedication of these students to their music and their work. We salute them and the long line of marching band student-musicians and directors, stretching back six decades, for the legacy they embody and continue, and for their contributions to the rich composition of Father Ryan High School.
