Team Philosophy “Start with simplicity and allow the natural design process and other inherent variables to create complexity” “Create a project that ideologically matches the position of the surrounding community”

Team Mission The Patch Adams Free Health Clinic of Philadelphia embodies the life and vision of Patch Adams. Distraught from the state of dehumanized, modern medicine, Patch Adams set out to completely change the relationship between doctors and patients. He wished to create a relationship not founded upon fear and detachment, but rather on love, compassion, and mutual respect. For the first time, the Patch Adams vision is being brought into a dense urban setting on Allegheny Avenue in Northern Philadelphia.

The Patch Adams Clinic History - Opened first Gesundheit Institute in 1972 with friend and later wife, Linda Edquist. - Operated for 12 years as a community hospital, free of insurance companies or any payment of any kind. Outlook - health of an individual cannot be separated from the health of the family, community, and the world. - social interaction and laughter are integral in the healing process. Goals - a Net-Zero building that exhibits the ideals of Patch and the Gesundheit Institute - a community building that incorporates the involvement of the community into the well being of all those involved in the establishment.

Users and Their Programs Clinic -Any sick or in need people, regardless of financial situation or lack of insurance. Community Center/Library -members of the neighborhood who beleive in the power that a group of people can posess when their focus is on the betterment of a community. Fitness Center -members of the neighborhood interested in becoming more physicaly active and conscious of their health. Daycare -primarily focused on benefitting the single parent families in the area and in return benefitting the greater community.

Schematic Design From the beginning the design was conceived to be a courtyard scheme with the programmatic elements surrounding and looking into the courtyard. Program layouts were explored using accesibility to the street and orientation to the south as the primary driving forces. These decisions all were reflected while the project still did not have a site, and thus became purely a programmatic response to the environmental Condition.

Pre midterm Plans Even prior to the midterm review, it became clear that the most dynamic space in the project was the community portion. The library submerged underneath the patio with light fixtures that punctured to the surface to create light wells that users could sit on. The community space overlooked the cafe and small performance space with a delicate staircase that rose through the sunspace.

Final iteration The community has voiced their need for a center where community members can enjoy a leisurely day, or safely leave their kids for a few hours. With this objective in mind, a scheme was created around a protected courtyard that all of the programmatic elements could mutually watch over. The community room opens out to a patio with large sliding doors and green roofs allow the community to overlook the courtyard with the view of the city skyline in the distance.

Spatial Quality While the atmosphere and spatial quality of the Patch Adams center is felt within the clinic, the clinic remains a private and autonomous zone. With the capability of operating 24/7, the clinic can function as a singular unit while the rest of the center is shut down to conserve energy. Inside of the clinic, the patients are greeted with a welcoming sense of privacy. The doctors lead the patients around the dividing wall into the bustling collaboration of Patch Adams’ administration, doctors’ offices, consultation rooms, and exam rooms.

The project embraces the Patch Adams’ vision, providing a place for community members to interact and assist each other in a social setting. In accordance with his vision, the Patch Adam’s Center on Allegheny provides the neighborhood of Tioga with a safe space to relax, learn and heal both body and mi nd.
