CHIPPENDALE CHAMPIONS After the wash out last year, the sun shined brightly on our Sports Day. Every child took part and competed for their 'house' in events which included the sack race, javelin, obstacle course, hurdles and relays. Congratulations to Chippendale for lifting the cup and a huge well done to the children; they competed fantastically, with a smile on their faces, showing great respect and support for all the competitors.
GROW YOUR OWN POTATOES Every year we hold the highly anticipated and rather competitive potato growing competition. Each class is given a seed potato, a bucket and compost and challenged to grow as many potatoes as possible. In an assembly, the potatoes are harvested and weighed by Angus McIntosh from Burley Gardeners Association. This year the winner, with an impressive 553g, was Mr Edwards' Class. Special congratulations to Bob who was desperate to win the competition in his final year and worked hard to support 3/4JE with their plant.
A 'WICKED' TIME IN LONDON In June, our Year 5/6 children were given the fantastic opportunity to visit Sky Studios in London to take a tour and produce their own Sky News report. The trip was organised as a London residential experience. At Sky Studios, the children were given an exclusive behind the scenes tour where they met the presenters and saw the technical side where all the channels are broadcasted from. After the tour at the purpose built Sky Skills Studios, the challenge was set: to create a news report based on the rising level of child obesity. In separate studios the children wrote, rehearsed, filmed and edited their piece with access to the latest green screen technology, HD cameras and touch screen edit tables. The final news report can be watched here: http://skills.sky.com/studios/video/HuEve4

After Sky the children were taken into central London. The route allowed the children to see many of the famous land marks before arriving at Bella Italia for an evening meal. With full stomachs, it was then back on the coach and on to The Apollo theatre to see the West End show, Wicked (Mrs Lee's favourite!). The children loved the show which was full of amazing singing, costumes and special effects. By 11pm the children had arrived at their accommodation for the night: the Premier Inn Hotel. Before they knew it, it was 7:30am and they were tucking into breakfast. The morning was spent looking around either the Science museum or the History Museum the children had voted before the trip on which one they wanted to go on. Lunch followed in Kensington Gardens before departing back to Burley with a coach full of very tired children and staff. Well done Y5/6 for being super ambassadors for the school.
LOCAL PHARMACY LINKS 1J joined forces with the local Burley in Wharfedale pharmacy to promote links with the community. They made 'Staying Healthy' bunting to decorate the pharmacy on their launch day.
A WARM WELCOME TO BURLEY OAKS Our Reception team work very hard in the final term to help ensure that the children (and parents) joining us next year are prepared and excited to join us at 'big' school. Staff visit the children in their Nursery settings and are welcomed to the school to take part in some story sessions. Parents are invited to a Reception information evening and the process is finished with a Teddy Bears' Picnic in the school's grounds on a Sunday afternoon. All the children at the picnic are presented with their own Burley Oaks Teddy Bear.
GREAT DAYS OUT After our 'Walk to School' and 'Dragons' Igniting Writing days, the final one of the year was called 'Great Days Out'. We were joined by storyteller Tony Wilson who worked with each of the year groups to share stories and to investigate the essential components of a great story. Reception linked their work to learning about Spain whilst Year 1/2 followed on a story started by Tony Wilson about magic fruit lost in a forest. Year 3/4 used a trip to the local playground to inspire their writing whilst 5/6 thought about the trips they had been on this year.
A FOND FAREWELL TO YEAR 6 Transition Throughout the year, Burley Oaks nurtures very close links with Ilkley Grammar School (IGS) and the other schools that our pupils move on to. Many activities are planned with IGS to help ensure that the children are ready and confident for their move. An ICT and a library day allow the children to visit IGS to complete stop motion animation, a photo hunt around school and a library induction. The children also attend a transition morning where they get to meet and work with their tutor groups and teacher. The final event is a Sports day where all the children take part in activities with coaches from the local community. This year it included American football, martial arts, dodgeball and orienteering. Celebrations After the hardwork of SATs and to celebrate their time together we arrange a number of activities. The children have spent a day at Flamingo Land, a day completing a Learn to Rock theatre workshop and on the last day they perform a Leavers' Concert. You may also see the children walking around in their specially designed Leavers' hoodies. A huge well done to Year 6 for a fantastic final year and for their huge progress and achievement in their time at our school. We wish everyone a successful time at secondary school - we know they will do Burley Oaks proud.
BUILD A BURLEY BRIDGE Our Year 2 children turned into bridge builders as part of their work on Isambard Kingdom Brunel and entered a competition sponsored by Burley Bridge Association. After designing their bridges on the iPads the children constructed their bridges at home and then, back at school, wrote about the pros and cons of a Burley bridge. The finished bridges were displayed in Burley library.
BYRON LINK CONTINUES Year 1 and 2 have continued their links with Byron Primary School. It was Year 1's turn this term to be visited by their Byron friends. They had a fantastic 'Bug Day' which included a bug hunt around the school grounds. Year 2 had a Princess and Knight day at Byron where they created a 3d castle scene.
GREECE GOES TO PIECES! Our Year 5 children put on an amazing production, Greece goes to Pieces. The story was set in Athens around the year 400 BC and centered around an ordinary pot maker named Peta. He introduced the audience to many of the famous scholars in Athens around the time such as Socrates, Plato, Hippocrates and Aristophanes. The play also told the story of Athenian history and shared an ancient myth.
LET IT SHINE Another 'SHINE' event was held this term where the children were given the choice of which event they wanted to take part in. As usual there was a wide range of activities to choose from including a map reading walk, pom pom making, movie making on iPads and sandwich making.
WORKSHOPS Year 5 spent an afternoon with the crew from West Yorkshire Fire Brigade. They spoke to the children about fire prevention and what to do if they saw or were involved in a fire. The workshop finished with a look around the engine. Year 5/6 have also completed a racism workshop a workshop led by the NSPCC on Childline and Bikeability training. Year 3/4 have completed pedestrian training and had a talk about beekeeping and the importance of bees.
E-SAFETY E-Safety continues to be an important focus at our school. The whole school had an E-safety day considering safety when using computers, when accessing the internet and the possible dangers of social media. Curriculum Innovation Consultant for Bradford Council, James Langley, led an assembly and completed workshops with the children. He returned to our school to hold an evening parents' e-safety meeting. If anyone requires more information you may find the ThinkYouKnow and KidSmart websites useful.
NELL BANK EXPERIENCE Year 1/2 spent a day at Nell Bank Activity Centre to help enhance their learning of the Living Things in their Habitat. The favourite part for Year 2 was the pond dipping whilst Year 1 loved their Gruffalo walk.
LE TOUR DE BURLEY Twenty Year 5 children took part in le Tour de Burley led by Emily from Sustrans. They spent the afternoon cycling around Burley. The yellow jersey was up for grabs and the hotly contested King of the Mountains shirt.
FANTASY OUTDOOR CLASSROOM Year 3/4 have been looking at the environment this term and in art have focused on recycling. You may have noticed the amazing plastic bag art work weaved into the ball courts fence but there is even more art work in the outdoor classroom. The children created fantasy plants by using recycled materials and then planted them in the wooded area.
SPORTS NEWS This term the children have competed for the school at cricket (y6), rounders (Y5), athletics (Y4) and swimming (Y5/6). Our Year 5 boys also represented our school at the Wharfedale Football Tournament at Pool -in-Wharfedale. They reached the final after winning all of their 4 matches without conceding a goal. They lost their final game one nil leaving us in second place.
PTA UPDATE The PTA members have worked extremely hard again this year to raise money to enhance the teaching, learning and enjoyment of the children at the school. The summer fair raised ÂŁ2200 and the May Ball ÂŁ1150. Thank you for supporting the school this term by providing drinks at events and for organising the Year 6 leavers' disco. They would like to welcome you all to an informal welcome evening in the school hall on Monday 23rd September from 7.30pm, where you can mingle and chat with new parents, current PTA members and friends. Please join us for a glass of wine and nibbles.
