xx + 420 pp., 100 b/w ills., 175 col. ills., ISBN 978-2-503-55455-6, € 125 / £106.00

This two-day conference will explore materials, techniques and artistic interconnections across Europe, including the role played by those who commissioned or sought sculptural works of art from foreign artists.

Jheronimus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder Assembling Knowledge not Setting Puzzles

This book challenges many of the assumptions about Jheronimus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Both artists demonstrate social, economic and political resonances in paintings that are numbingly familiar yet still poorly understood.

Renaissance Invention and the Haunted Infancy

This programme has been generously funded by Robert H. Smith

iv + 310 pp., 165 b/w ills., 19 col. ills., ISBN 978-1-905375-71-4, € 100 / £85.00 HARVEY MILLER PUBLISHERS

“The beauty of Alfred Acres’s book is that it takes themes, or better, ideas that are so familiar – those intimations of the Passion or of evil in scenes of Christ’s Infancy – and shows how dense with meaning they are, how inventive they are, and how fully they contribute to the meaning of the art works in which they appear.” (Lynn Jacobs, in: Historians of Netherlandish Art Review of Books, September 2014)

“(...) All who are interested in Rubens and this sophisticated and learned multi-media project will find much serious yet also provocative scholarship in this important volume. To Knaap and Putnam and the contributors we owe “spectacular” thanks.” (Larry Silver, in: Historians of Netherlandish Art Review of Books, September 2014)

The MECC, Maastricht, Netherlands

Some Northern European highlights of the fair twenty-eighth year, the European Fine Art Fair, Maastricht, maintains its status at the very summit of world art fairs. A dizzying array of objects will greet visitors who will arrive in their thousands to view and perhaps buy the best works currently on the market.

NOW IN ITS

Virgin and Child, by the Master of the Embroidered Foliage. Active in Brussels, 1480–1500. Panel, 66 by 57 cm. GALERIE DE JONCKHEERE, GENEVA

In connection with the theme of this issue we are illustrating a small selection of Northern European works. Nowhere will collectors and curators find such large a hoard of works from the Low Countries adorning the stands in the Paintings section. Of particular interest will be a focus on still-life paintings on the stand of Johnny Van Haeften (London). Four exquisite panels by Jan van Kessel the Elder (1626–79) depict a menagerie of insects and other invertebrates. One of these small-scale paintings cleverly spells the artist’s name with the use of contorting creatures. In complete contrast will be the full-length Caledonian portrait of Sir Euan Murray-Macgregor by Sir Henry Raeburn, R.A. (1756–1823). Now for sale with Simon C. Dickinson Ltd (London), this tartan-clad figure was painted circa 1797–99 and has remained in the sitter’s family until 2014. The Vereniging Rembrandt, the Foundation that helps to acquire works for Dutch museums, will also be present at the fair. They will exhibit a number of drawings that have recently been bought for Dutch museums in the Van Regteren Altena sale at Christie’s, London. There will also be a loan exhibition entitled Teyler’s Legacy. Twenty-eight drawings will be selected from the Teylers Museum in Haarlem (the oldest museum in The Netherlands). Sheets by old masters such as Michelangelo (1475–1564) and Rembrandt (1606–69) will be contrasted with contemporary European drawings by artists including Guiseppe Penone and Pavel Pepperstein.

E D I TO R

T H E B U R L I N G TO N M A G A Z I N E The Burlington Magazine is the world's leading English language monthly publication devoted to the fine and decorative arts. Founded in 1903 by a group of art historians and connoisseurs that included Roger Fry, Bernard Berenson and Herbert Horne, The Burlington Magazine has appeared monthly without interruption ever since. It publishes concise, well-written articles based on original research, presenting art-historical discoveries and fresh interpretations.

On the retirement of Richard Shone, Editor, The Burlington Magazine is looking for an Editor to lead the publication forwards in both print and digital formats. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the integrity and academic standards of the editorial content, including selecting, commissioning and editing articles with the assistance of an experienced editorial team. The successful candidate must have a bachelor’s degree, but an advanced degree in art history, literature, or a related field is desirable. A high professional standing in a scholarly press, museum, university or equivalent environment is required. The ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of art and publishing, a tested understanding of the editorial process, and be able to work to tight deadlines. The successful candidate must also have proven leadership skills and the ability to create a positive and productive team environment. The candidate should be able to collaborate effectively with a wide range of colleagues and contacts, both external and internal, and must possess excellent communication skills. This is a board-level position that reports to the Chairman and so requires a candidate who is organised, able to set priorities and juggle competing demands. Some travel is required.

For a full description of the Editor’s role and responsibilities and the application requirements, please go to www.burlington.org.uk Deadline for applications is Friday February 27, 2015
