A selection of highlights to be exhibited at the Fair THE TWENTY-EIGHTH European Fine Art Fair will once again occupy the colossal halls of the MECC exhibition centre. Not far from the medieval city centre, the fair offers a cornucopia of rare and precious objects dating from antiquity to modern times. The event is regarded the world over as the most important vetted art and antiques fair on the planet. In the last issue we showed a selection of paintings and works on paper from Northern Europe. Here we feature a small selection of works primarily from Southern Europe.

ROB SMEETS OLD MASTER PAINTINGS, GENEVA

Available on the stand of Matthiesen Gallery Ltd (London) will be The battle at Siponto, from the Grajal retable, by the Spanish Gothic painter Juan de Sevilla (1425–50). This richly decorated panel has an impeccable provenance. Dating from the beginning of the 17thcentury will be the dramatic and densely populated Stoning of St Stephen by Pisan artist Aurelio Lomi Gentileschi (1556–1623/24).

Painted in oil on paper over pen and brown ink, it will be for sale on the stand of Giacometti Old Master Paintings (Rome). With Richard Green (London) will be Rome: the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini on the Tiber, by Hendrik Frans van Lint, called Monsù Studio (1684–1763). Although born in Antwerp, van Lint settled in Rome c.1703 where he remained for the rest of his life. He became one of the leading vedute painters in the first half of the 18th century and was patronised by Rome’s old aristocratic familes and Grand Tour travellers.

20th-century works by most major European artists will be plentiful at the Fair, including the bronze Cavallo e Cavaliere by Marino Marini (1901–80) on the stand of Landau Fine Art, Inc (Montreal).

Short-lived but prolific, Paolo Scheggi (1941–71) was notable for pioneering ‘painting as object’ with his overlapping canvases.

Intersuperficie Curva dal Rosso is a fine example of his work and will be available with Robilant + Voena (London and Milan).

As well as Western fine art, TEFAF will include sections on ethnographic and tribal art, Oriental and Asian art and all manner of manuscripts, clocks, furniture, silver, ceramics, rare books and textiles.

A selection of highlights to be exhibited at the Fair

Salon du Dessin and Semaine du Dessin will once again prove irresistible for international collectors, scholars and enthusiasts of drawings. Many old-master, nineteenth-century and modern works will be on view for the last time before disappearing into the obscurity of private collections. Equally, museum purchases will elevate unknown or rediscovered works into the public realm. There will be thirty-nine private dealers this year with seven new galleries joining the fold from Paris, Rome and London. Of particular interest is Aktis Gallery (London).

Formed in 2010, this dealership specialises in the works of twentieth-century Russian émigré and non-comformist artists such as Marc Chagall (1887–1985) and Oleg Tselkov (b.1934).

Another newcomer is old-master dealer Marty de Cambiaire (Paris) who will show sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Italian drawings including Study of a seated male nude by Giambattista Tiepolo (1696–1770).

This year the loan exhibition will feature significant architectural drawings from the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The international Symposium will also concentrate on the field of architectural drawings with a programme of twelve lectures investigating the Document to the monument.

More than twenty museums in Paris and the surrounding area will partake in the sixteenth Semaine du Dessin (23–30 March).

Highlights will include Dessins de Guerre comprising drawings and engravings by Ossip Zadkine (1890–1967) at Musée Zadkine, Raphael, Titian, Michelangelo. Italian Drawings from the Städel Museum in Frankfurt (1430–1600) at the Fondation Custodia, and drawings by the prolific artist Charles Lameire (1832–1910) at the Musée d’Orsay.

A Flemish architect and draughtsman, Lieven Cruyl is best known for his accomplished drawings of urban views in Italy and France. Drawn in 1686, this drawing depicts the construction of the Pont Royal over the river Seine in Paris. Work on the bridge was begun in October 1685 and completed by June 1689. Construction was directed by the architect Jacques Gabriel, who is almost certainly the figure seen in the near foreground, to the right of centre, in this drawing. Gabriel was assisted by François Romain, a Dutch-born Dominican monk and engineer, who may perhaps be identified with the cleric at the lower right corner of the composition, giving instructions to the workmen. Only recently rediscovered in a private collection and previously unknown to scholars, this drawing may be added to a group of seven drawings by Cruyl depicting the construction of the Pont Royal, dated between 1686 and 1689, of which four are in Parisian museums.
