Palazzo Corsini, Florence | 26 September – 4 October 2015

twenty-ninth Florence Biennale will once more be held in Palazzo Corsini sull’Arno. The fair was first launched in 1959 and today it continues to be one of the world’s most prestigious art and antiques fairs. This year the visitor experience will be improved under the guidance of celebrated director and stage designer Pier Puigi Pizzi. The main modification will be removing exhibitor stands from the magnificent 17th-century Throne Room enabling visitors to experience the architectural space unimpeded.

THIS AUTUMN THE

Seventy-nine dealers, mainly from Italy, will exhibit objects ranging in date from antiquity to modern times. A distinguished vetting committee will meticulously check every object for quality and provenance. Authenticity will then be guaranteed by the Art Works Unit of the Carabinieri. Flora, by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770). Oil on canvas, 88.3 by 69.9 cm JEAN-LUC BARONI, LONDON

Although the fair will showcase mainly Italian paintings, sculpture, works on paper and decorative objects there will also be plenty of works from Northern Europe and other parts of the world. With Mullany, London will be a 15th-century Nottingham alabaster relief depicting The Ascension of Christ. More sculptural works will be shown by Tomasso Brothers Fine Art, London including the exquisitely carved white marble Bust of a gentleman by Giovacchino Fortini (1670–1736). Fine furniture will be in profusion including Pignatti Morano di Custoza’s elaborately decorated mid-18th century chest of drawers on the stand of Piva & C., Milan. Illuminated manuscripts will be for sale with two specialist dealers. Of note will be Giovanni Boccaccio’s (1313–75) manuscript on vellum Des Cas des Nobles Homes et Femmes in the French translation of Laurent de Premierfait, 2nd ed. and illuminated c.1460–70, which will be with specialist dealer Dr. Jörn Günther Rare Books AG, Stalden. An important highlight of the fair in the paintings category will be Anthony van Dyck’s (1599−1641) Portrait of John Belasyse, later First Lord Belasyse of Worlaby with Robilant+Voena, London. Jean-Luc Baroni, London will be showing Flora by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

Leopold Kiesling (Schönleben, near Liebenau, Upper Austria 1770 – Vienna 1827) The Genius of the Arts Unveiling Nature Rome, 1809–1810 Marble with bronze inserts, 140cm high

The allegory of the Genius of the Arts unveiling the simulacrum of Isis as Diana of Ephesus, the personification of nature, is here celebrating, besides the basis of the arts in the mimesis of nature, also a central theme in the poetry of Schiller and Goethe. According to the vision of the two great writers, man’s aspiration to nature was founded on the allegory of Apollo Unveling Diana of Ephesus put forward by Alexander von Humboldt in 1805, translated into a sketch in Rome by Thorvaldsen that was engraved in 1807, from which Kiesling’s statue constitutes a further interpretation, made between 1809 and 1810, under the aegis of Thorvaldsen and Canova.

The work will be exhibited at the Biennale Internazionale dell’Antiquariato di Firenze, Palazzo Corsini, 26 September – 4 October 2015

20/21 BRITISH ART FAIR 2015 The Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London,

SW 7

2 EU | | 9 - 13 September 2015

IN SEPTEMBER THE twenty-eighth 20/21 British Art Fair will once again be staged within the spacious rooms of The Royal College of Art. Located in South Kensington, since 1896 the RCA has been venerated by many as the ‘spiritual home’ of Modern and Post-War British art. The institution has nurtured many great exponents such as Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, David Hockney and Peter Blake.

The fair will showcase a diverse assortment of paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture and photography from 55 exhibitors of whom a quarter participated in the inaugural event of 1988. Buyers can be assured of the quality and legitimacy of the objects for sale due to a stringent vetting process. The broad price range and cordial atmosphere make the event particularly conducive to inexperienced collectors and those seeking advice on starting a collection. The assembled dealers are usually willing to share their specialist knowledge of artists and art movements in Britain from 1900 to the present day. Works by established names will be displayed alongside an abundance of pieces by lesser known and emerging artists.

Belsen – burning the horror camp, by Edgar Ainsworth (1905–75). 1945. Watercolour, 56 by 48 cm. SIM FINE ART, LONDON

Thorn trees, by Graham Sutherland (1903–80). 1952. Pencil, ink and gouache, 35.2 by 52.5 cm. Signed. CHRISTOPHER KINGZETT FINE ART, LONDON

On the stand of Sim Fine Art will be Belsen – burning the horror camp, an affecting watercolour from 1945 by Edgar Ainsworth (1905–75). The artist visited Bergen-Belsen three times in the months after its liberation. A less sombre landscape on offer with The Court Gallery will be Walter Sickert’s (1860–1942) oil sketch Road to the casino, Dieppe, from 1907. More abstract works will be plentiful, including Graham Sutherland’s (1903–80) bright and spiky composition Thorn Trees, from 1952, which will be available from Christopher Kingzett Fine Art. Works by the Scottish Colourists will be with specialist dealer Duncan R. Miller Fine Arts. Of note will be the vibrantly rendered oil on panel Cathedral Rock, Iona by Samuel Peploe (1871–1975), a painter more commonly known for his still-life subjects. The fair is always dependable for those seeking modern sculpture. Accordingly, Whitford Fine Art will be presenting Anthony Caro’s (1924–2013) abstract composition Table Piece Y-29. This jaggedly welded and waxed steel work dates from the1980s and has surfaced from a private collection in the USA. In contrast the highly polished bronze work Six Forms on a Circle, 1967, by Barbara Hepworth (1903–75) will be for sale with Osborne Samuel. More sculptural pieces will be on view with Keith Chapman who frequently has works by modern masters such as Jacob Epstein (1880–1959), Michael Ayrton (1921–75) and Bernard Meadows (1915–2005). Aficionados of photography will find plenty of nineteenth- and twentieth-century images on the stand of Pierre Spake Ltd including a number of fashion-related plates. Fifty percent of the stand will be devoted to photography.

ART & ANTIQUES FAIR BERKELEY SQUARE, LONDON | 22 - 27 SEPTEMBER 2015 | LAPADALONDON.COM

‘Association of Art & Antiques Dealers’ fair will take place in a specially constructed marquee in the heart of London’s Mayfair. This is emphatically a collector’s event comprising 100 exhibitors who will present high-end objects spanning a diverse spectrum of categories. As with all prestigious art and antiques fairs, the vetting process is a prerequisite. The seventy members of the vetting committee will ensure that visitors can buy furniture, fine art, tapestries, antiquities, clocks, ceramics, silver and jewellery with credence. This year the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, will act as a ‘cultural partner’ to the fair. Dr Catherine Whistler, Keeper of the Western Art Department, will deliver a lecture sharing curatorial insights into the Museum’s forthcoming exhibition: Titian to Canaletto: Drawing in Venice (15th October to 10th January 2016).
