The London Original Print Fair Royal Academy of Arts, Piccadilly | 5-8 May 2016 | www.londonprintfair.com

The marriage at Cana, by Stanley Spencer (1891–1959). 1953. Lithograph, 64.5 by 52 cm. FINE ART SOCIETY, LONDON

THIS SPRING THE London Original Print Fair will be staged for the thirty-first time in the commodious exhibition rooms of the Royal Academy of Arts. The event is now London’s longest surviving commercial art fair and Europe’s largest dedicated to original prints. Fifty leading dealers and publishers from as far afield as Scandinavia, North America and Japan will offer works ranging in date from the time of Dürer to the present day. Although works for sale will overwhelmingly cater for modern tastes a small group of old-master specialists will offer works including A beggar seated on a bank (Self-portrait) by Rembrandt (1606–69). This will be with C.G. Boerner (New York). Of particular note in the contemporary field will be a new series of prints by Jake and Dinos Chapman on the stand of Paupers Press (London).

Running concurrently with the fair will be a group exhibition in the Friends Room. Curated by Tess Jaray (who will have new works on the stand of Advanced Graphics), the display will feature new works by Terry Frost. The Annual Printmaking Talk on 6th May will find the Royal Academician Michael Craig-Martin in conversation with Joan Bakewell. Insights will be offered into his creative processes including etching, screen printing, 3-D printing and light-box installations. Other daily talks and events will profile Japanese woodblock printing, the prints of James McNeil Whistler (1834–1903) and printmaking at the RA Schools (past and present). The programme will also include a young collectors evening with a live screen printing by Gary Hume. Additional presentations by artists such as Yinka Shonibare, Tess Jaray, Bob Saich, Paul Coldwell and Katherine Jones will add much to interest collectors, artists and print enthusiasts.

The windmill, by Sybil Andrews (1898–1992). 1933. Linocut, 33 by 23.2 cm. OSBORNE SAMUEL, LONDON

A pair of polished gentlemen, by James Gillray (1756–1815). 1801. Etching, soft-ground etching and engraving with watercolour and gum Arabic. 35.5 by 25.5 cm. ANDREW EDMUNDS, LONDON

A new museum purchase grant will be launched at the Fair. £8,000 will be made available (subject to application) for a public collection in the UK to purchase a work from the Fair. Sponsored by Ecclesiastical Insurance, this initiative aims to raise the profile of print holdings and acquisitions within the public realm. For more details on these events and the Fair please visit: www.londonprintfair.com

1450–1600 Jonathan J. G. Alexander Hand-painted illumination enlivened the burgeoning culture of the book in the Italian Renaissance, spanning the momentous shift from manuscript production to print. This major survey, by a leading authority on medieval and renaissance book illumination, gives the first comprehensive account in English of an immensely creative and relatively little-studied art form.

Based on new research from Irish national collections and private correspondence, this engaging book illustrates the many ways in which the residences of aristocratic and gentry families in 18th-century Ireland were specifically designed to accommodate their lifestyles.

After Caravaggio A revelatory study of a school of remarkable painters from one of the great art historians of the 20th century. In this accessible and beautifully illustrated book, renowned art historian Michael Fried explores the nature and meaning of artistic influence and brings to light the extraordinary achievements of a generation of Italian Baroque painters inspired by the example of Caravaggio.

The Painted Book in Renaissance Italy

This handsome catalogue brings to light the forgotten Le Nain brothers, a trio of 17th-century French master painters who specialised in portraiture, religious subjects and scenes of everyday peasant life. Published in association with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco 320 colour illustrations Hardback £50.00

The World in the Workbench Christopher R. Marshall This richly textured study of one of the most vital and significant art centres of Baroque Italy locates great works of the Italian Baroque within the social and economic context that produced them: a hothouse world of competing patrons, agents, artists and collectors. 50 colour + 150 b/w illustrations Hardback £50.00
