CHINESE PORCELLAIN A IN HABSBURG SPAIN A Cinta Krahe 600 pp., 345 col. ill. Hardco over, â‚Ź50 Although Spain was on ne of the main commercial and colonial powers of the Moder M n Age, its role in the circulatiion of Chinese export porce elain was far from being ver y clear. This exquisite volume, which examines the reception of pieces of this kind during thee reign of the Habsburgs, gs is thereffore oree intended to fill an importan nt gap. gap Together with lacquered ed objects and exotica, porccelain circulated throughout the Spanish Empire, passing throug gh the Americas, but until now there had been no record of o the pieces that reached the Spanish sh market. However, Krahe rreconstructs the journey of th his porcelain ware from souther n China, C analysing what it wass like, how it was displayed and stored, to what uses it was put and how it was valued in sixteenth- and seventeenth-centur entury Spain. Based on thorough archiv chival research, a systematicc sur vey of archaeological disco iscoveries, a rich documentary corpu us and a great deal of illustrations, a the author provides an n insight into a hitherto unknown asspect, opening up new perspec pectives ffor or historians, art hisstorians, and historians of material cculture and taste.
