environs of Mayfair and St James’s will once again welcome collectors, museum curators and enthusiasts to London Art Week, an annual trail of commercial gallery exhibitions and auction sales. For the fourth year running, paintings, sculpture and drawings are shown together. There will be a very broad spectrum of themed exhibitions and stock shows with objects ranging from antiquity to modern times.

This page is concerned with paintings, and we will shall illustrate the range and quality of works to be offered. Richard Green Fine Paintings will be staging two exhibitions simultaneously: Aspects of British Impressionism and Dutch flower pieces 1607–1814. Antonio Joli (1700–77): Views of Italy will be with Lampronti Gallery. These landscapes and cityscapes will highlight the artist’s visits to Naples, Rome and Venice.

More fine vedute paintings will be available at the gallery of Charles Beddington. A large-scale monographic exhibition of portraits by Cornelius Johnson (1593–1661) will be at the Weiss Gallery. To celebrate thirty years of trading, the gallery will show a number of paintings on loan from institutions and private sources. Christie’s will be selling Lot and his daughters, by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) at the evening sale on 7th July. An important work of Rubens’s early maturity, this painting has remained hidden from public view for over a century.

Selected Dutch paintings from the 17th century will be on offer with Johnny van Haeften including the vibrant still-life illustrated here and also a masterly flower painting: A Still-life of Tulips and other Flowers in a Ceramic Vase by Balthasar ven der Ast (1593–1657).

MAURIZIO NOBILE. EXHIBITING AT: 37 BURY STREET, SWI

COLLECTORS AND AFICIONADOS of works on paper will discover a wide-ranging selection at the Summer gallery shows and auctions in July. Most of the dealers taking part in London Art Week will be staging stock exhibitions, but a few will present themed exhibitions including Traveller-artists in the Far East at the gallery of Martyn Gregory. The gallery specialises in ‘China Trade’ paintings and drawings from the period 1700-1950. This exhibition will offer works on paper by European artists who travelled to India, China and the Far East including William Alexander (1767–1816) and George Chinnery (1774–1852). An interesting mix of European and English watercolours and drawings from this period will also be available with James Mackinnon. Drawing inspiration: Sketches and sketchbook pages from 19th and 20th century will be staged at the gallery of Stephen Ongpin Fine Art. Highlights will include sheets by Odilon Redon (1840-1916), Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) and Paul Cézanne (1839–1906). Baigneuses, a particularly vibrant watercolour from 1906 by André Derain (1880–1954) will be for sale with Stoppenbach and Delestre.

Continental old-master drawings will include a selection from visiting dealer Maurizio Nobile (Bologna and Paris). On offer will be a group of rediscovered drawings by Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652–1725), sculptor and architect to the court of Cosimo III de’ Medici. More European old-master drawings will be available with other dealers including Didier Aaron Ltd, Florian Härb, Martin Grässle and Crispian Riley-Smith Fine Arts Ltd. by the sculpture dealers during London Art Week are always important for collectors and enthusiasts. This year Tomasso Brothers Fine Art will be showing works in a display entitled Antique inspiration. Apollo and the Graces, an Italian Neo-classical relief from the nineteenth century carved from white marble will be a highlight. In a similar vein, Lullo Pampoulides, a new firm, will be staging Classicism reimagined: Master paintings and sculptures 1700–circa 1900. Early stained-glass specialist Sam Fogg will be staging Gilded Light: 16th-century stained-glass roundels from the collection of Sir Thomas Neave and other private collections. A fine example for sale will be Nebuchadnezzar dreams of a tree that must be felled by Lambert van Noort (1520–71). A new participant to London Art Week will be Arcadia Cerri Fine Art, and of interest for collectors of medieval sculpture will be Head of a frowning man, created in the Champagne region of France (c.1275–1300). The Daniel Katz Gallery is staging a themed exhibition entitled Of Gods and men. The exhibition will explore the characteristics sculptors used to portray deities shown together with portraits of mortal men.

The arts of ancient Greece and Rome are a feature of London Art Week, and visitors will find a vast range of objects spanning many centuries at Rupert Wace Fine Art. Their exhibition, Horses, rulers and victory in the art of ancient Greek coinage will include a gold Drachma from Syracuse, Sicily, c.317–310 BC.
