STEPHEN ONGPIN FINE ART Old Master, 19th Century and Modern Drawings
HENDRICK SONNIUS (C.1615–C.1688) An Italianate Landscape with Travellers and a Donkey Pen and brown ink and brown wash on vellum. Inscribed A. v. d. Velde near the lower left. Signed henritio zonius fl. 60 / Roma 1647 on the verso. 346 x 485 mm. (135⁄8 x 191⁄8 in.) Drawn in Rome in 1647, this very large landscape on vellum is one of only two surviving drawings by the 17th century Dutch artist Hendrick Sonnius. Sonnius spent some time in Rome in the 1640s, but was back in the Netherlands by 1649. He is last recorded in The Hague in 1659, and seems to have spent the latter part of his career in England. Although he is documented as a landscape and portrait painter, only two paintings by the artist, both landscapes, have survived to this day. Just one other drawing by Sonnius is known; a smaller pastoral scene drawn in graphite on vellum, signed and dated 1645, in the British Museum.
Master Drawings 2017 catalogue now available including works by Alma-Tadema, Cecco Bravo, Cross, Della Bella, Desfriches, Grasset, Guercino, Harpignies, Kennington, Lagrenée, Magnasco, Maurin, Melville, Munch, Percier, Piazzetta, Picasso, Pierre, Pillement, Rigaud, Rossetti, Rubens, Signac, Tempesta, Vinkeles, Viollet-le-Duc, Vollon and Vuillard. Some Northern European highlights of the fair
The Hours of Isabeau de Croix, by The Master of the Harvard Hannibal (active c.1415–30), the Master of the Munich Golden Legend (active c.1420–60), and the Dunois Master (active c.1435–50s). Paris, circa 1430–50. Illuminated manuscript on parchment. LES ENLUMINURES, PARIS, CHICAGO, NEW YORK
NOW IN ITS thirtieth year, the European Fine Art Fair, Maastricht, remains at the summit of world art fairs. Acknowledged international experts subject objects to a stringent vetting process for museum quality, authenticity and condition. Every effort is made to ensure that visiting collectors, curators and enthusiasts can view and purchase works of the highest calibre with confidence. Pieces dating from the Neolithic period to recent works by living artists will be offered by 275 international galleries from twenty or so countries. To reflect the theme of this issue we are showing here a diverse selection of Northern European works. The geographical location of TEFAF Maastricht has always given emphasis to works from Germany and the Low Countries. In the paintings section, objects reflecting seventeenth-century taste will be arranged in a simulated room on the stand of Richard Green, London, entitled ‘The Pleasures of Life in the 17th century Netherlands’. Agnews, London, will feature an exhibition of paintings entitled ‘Northern Renaissance and Baroque’. A highlight will be Card players in an interior by Theodore Rombouts (1597–1637).
This year the TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund will make three awards. The conservation of Titian’s Judith with the head of Holofernes at the Detroit Institute of Art and the restoration and reconstruction of Auguste Rodin’s Absolution at the Musée Rodin, Paris, will be the principal beneficiaries. A third smaller award will be granted for the restoration of a volume of Der Blaue Reiter dating from 1912. This journal was acquired jointly by four Dutch museums in 2015. A museum loan exhibition is to be announced. Visit: tefaf.com

In recent years is has become increasingly difficult for museums to acquire new works themselves. Therefore the Rubens House has been conducting an active loan policy with private collectors. The Rubens House stands to amaze with a recently discovered self-portrait by Van Dyck and work
Frans Pourbus the younger, Portrait of Elisabeth of France (picture Ans Brys). Private collection, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
of Jacob Jordaens and of course Rubens himself.
