European Fine Art Fair celebrates its thirtieth anniversary as the most lauded of all international art and antiques fairs. A strict vetting process for quality, authenticity and condition underpins the event so collectors, curators and enthusiasts can buy objects in good faith. A vast spectrum of artworks ranging from the Neolithic period to the present day will be presented by 275 international galleries from twenty or so countries. This three-page preview will provide some idea of the calibre and scope of the fair and show why it retains its pre-eminence among commercial art events.

One of the highlights of TEFAF Maastricht is the annual institutional loan exhibition. This year the exhibition space (in the ‘Paper’ section of the fair) will be occupied by Rome’s Galleria Borghese. Housed in the Villa Borghese, and built in the early 17th century by Cardinal Scipione Borgese, the museum embodies the history and development of Italian collecting. Works will range from antiquity to the modern era and include sculpture, bas-reliefs and mosaics. The fine paintings on view will date from the 15th to the 18th century. ‘TEFAF Curated’, will weave a common thread between objects in the modern and contemporary art categories. Dr Penelope Curtis, Director of Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon, has selected works that show the reclining or recumbent figure. Curtis’s selection will reflect on artistic creation from ancient times to the modern era, enabling visitors to make historical and artistic links between the works. Another feature of the fair will be the ‘TEFAF Art Symposium’. Based on a recent art market report, a panel comprised of art academics and professionals will examine the importance of context in determining the historical, artistic and financial worth of a work of art. SALON DU DESSIN – 22nd to 27th March 2017 PALAIS BRONGNIART, PACE DE LA BOURSE, PARIS
staging of the Salon du Dessin will be eagerly anticipated by collectors, curators, scholars and enthusiasts of drawings. There is always an element of surprise and discovery when browsing the plethora of museum-quality works offered by the thirty-nine international dealers. Works for sale will predominantly represent the main European schools from the early Renaissance to the modern era. An outstanding early Northern work will be Head of an elderly man by Hans Baldung Grien (1484/5–1545) on the stand of Jean-Luc Baroni. With Marty de Cambiaire will be Study of a male nude by the Mannerist artist Giuseppe Cesari, also known as Cavaliere d’Arpino (1568–1640) (opposite). This rare work, demonstrating bold chiaroscuro in red and black chalk, is in in a remarkable state of preservation. Among the many treasures from the 20th century will be Woman with flowers by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) on the stand of Reginart Collections and Nicolas de Staël’s (1914–55) Composition, 1948, will be with Galerie Berès. Coloured Rhythm, a vibrant study for a large panel by Sonia Delaunay (1885–1979) will be offered by Brame & Lorenceau.

This year the loan exhibition will feature ten years of acquisitions by the Association Le Cabinet des Amateurs de Dessins de l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts. The display will include important works by Horace Vernet (1789–1863, Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1806), Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) and Jean-François Millet (1814–75). A two-day symposium, From David to Delacroix (II), will be staged in the venue’s auditorium. Hosted by Pierre Rosenberg and Louis-Antoine Prat from the Louvre, there will be twelve presentations by invited international speakers. Drawings Week, an inspired collaboration between the fair and seventeen participating museums in Paris, Sèvre, Sceaux and Chantilly, will be an added attraction. This off-site itinerary will encompass special exhibitions and private tours at institutions including the Musée du Louvre, Fondation Custodia, Musée d’Orsay, Musée Picasso and Musée Eugène Delacroix.

STEPHEN ONGPIN FINE ART Old Master, 19th Century and Modern Drawings
HENDRICK SONNIUS (C.1615–C.1688) An Italianate Landscape with Travellers and a Donkey Pen and brown ink and brown wash on vellum. Inscribed A. v. d. Velde near the lower left. Signed henritio zonius fl. 60 / Roma 1647 on the verso. 346 x 485 mm. (135⁄8 x 191⁄8 in.) Drawn in Rome in 1647, this very large landscape on vellum is one of only two surviving drawings by the 17th century Dutch artist Hendrick Sonnius. Sonnius spent some time in Rome in the 1640s, but was back in the Netherlands by 1649. He is last recorded in The Hague in 1659, and seems to have spent the latter part of his career in England. Although he is documented as a landscape and portrait painter, only two paintings by the artist, both landscapes, have survived to this day. Just one other drawing by Sonnius is known; a smaller pastoral scene drawn in graphite on vellum, signed and dated 1645, in the British Museum.
Master Drawings 2017 catalogue now available including works by Alma-Tadema, Cecco Bravo, Cross, Della Bella, Desfriches, Grasset, Guercino, Harpignies, Kennington, Lagrenée, Magnasco, Maurin, Melville, Munch, Percier, Piazzetta, Picasso, Pierre, Pillement, Rigaud, Rossetti, Rubens, Signac, Tempesta, Vinkeles, Viollet-le-Duc, Vollon and Vuillard. Michelangelo’s Tomb for Julius II Genesis and Genius Christoph Luitpold Frommel In 1505, Michelangelo began work on a magnificent tomb for Julius II which would dominate the next forty years of his career. In the end, however, logistical complications and tensions with his patron kept the tomb from being fully realized: while it features some of Michelangelo’s finest sculpture, its final iteration is a mere shadow of what he originally conceived. This gorgeous volume offers a deep and multifaceted look at the making of this legendary tomb, shedding new light on its myriad details and Michelangelo’s creative process. THE J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM Hardcover £50.00
