The London Original Print Fair
Royal Academy of Arts, Piccadilly | 4-7 May 2017 | www.londonprintfair.com
THE LONDON ORIGINAL PRINT FAIR is now in its thirty-second year and once more the airy exhibition space at the Royal Academy will house fifty international specialist dealers from the UK, mainland Europe and the Americas. Several established dealers showing oldmaster prints will attract much interest from collectors and scholars. Rare etchings, woodcuts and engravings by familiar names such as Rembrandt (1606–69) and Canaletto (1697–1768) will be on view alongside sheets by lesser known masters. Of particular note will be three woodcuts by Lorenz Stoer (1529/1530–99) on the stand of Christopher Mendez. Renowned for his 1567 woodcut book Geometrica et Perspectiva, these single sheets by Stoer are recorded in Hollstein as the only impressions in existence and will accordingly be displayed in a row of their own. Grapefruit, by Brian Eno. 2016. Etching, 63.5 by 63.5 cm. PAUL STOLPER, LONDON
The fair will be bristling with newly published editions by both celebrated and not so well-known printmakers. Advanced Graphics will mark their 50th anniversary by showing new works by Basil Beattie, Anthony Frost and Tess Jaray. Alan Cristea Gallery will dedicate their stand to Cornelia Parker and Gillian Ayres and Polígrafa will have a monographic display of works by Rose Wylie. Prints by notable Royal Academicians will be plentiful with the dealers, and the RA itself which will launch new prints by Ed Ruscha, Gary Hume, Stephen Farthing and Christopher Le Brun. The international status of the fair will be bolstered by a good number of galleries. ArtChina will present sixty contemporary Chinese woodblock prints including works by Xu Bing, Chen Qi and Wang Chao, and Arroniz, will show prints by Mexican artists such as Mario Palacious Kaim and Fernando Garcia Correa. This year the annual printmaker’s talk will be given by Cornelia Parker. To discover more about the fair and the programme of talks and events please visit: www.londonprintfair.com

Zhu Jianhui, Rope. 2010. Woodblock printed with water-soluble ink on xuan paper. Image size: 50 x 100 cm. Edition: 25 ‘Rope’ represents those visible and invisible elements which constrain us in our modern lives. The artist used the style of the Terracotta Army to suggest how tradition can constrain us in today’s life. By using fine cutting to create a realistic impression of the rope, the artist also uses this to highlight the contrast between this detail and more abstract, spiritual concepts.
