SIR DENIS MAHON ESSAY PRIZE 2018 This prize comprises an award of £1,000 for an essay of distinction which reflects Sir Denis Mahon’s studies, research and interests. Whilst Sir Denis focussed on the 17th century period and especially on the work of Guercino, Carracci, Caravaggio and Nicolas Poussin, his much wider range of art historical interests included the 15th and 16th centuries, and also certain key modern and contemporary artists. Sir Denis was a contemporary and a friend of Graham Sutherland, Henry Moore, Eduardo Paolozzi, Giorgio Morandi and he much admired their work. Of the contemporary artists, he particularly liked the post-war avant-garde conceptual British artists, as well as David Hockney, Grayson Perry and others. We welcome essays on any of these aspects and artists including the contemporary ones. The prize is open to undergraduates or post graduate students aged 30 years or below. Closing date: Friday 7th September 2018. The winning student will be invited to present his or her essay as a lecture on 8th November 2018 at The Royal Drawing School, Shoreditch, London. For full details, email Suzanne Marriott at suzanne.marriott@crsblaw.com

From Louis XIV to the French Revolution Edited by Daniëlle O. KislukGrosheide and Bertrand Rondot

Christopher Lloyd

This beautifully illustrated book demonstrates that artists were fascinated by and skilled at still-life painting considerably earlier than previously thought. It explores its origins in classical antiquity and its gradual re-emergence in Renaissance painting. Featured works include paintings from Renaissance greats such as Da Vinci and Holbein.

This sumptuously illustrated book traces and interprets Picasso’s lifelong achievement as a draughtsman. It details how drawing serves as the vital thread connecting his entire body of work and showcases how the basis of Picasso’s style as painter, sculptor and designer was manifestly achieved through drawing. Distributed for Modern Art Press

The term ‘macaroni’ was once a familiar label yielding a complex set of social, sexual and cultural associations. Here, manner of dress and biography come together with explorations of masculinity and sexuality to create a new fashionscape of 18th-century British men.

SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS PRA Plympton 1723 – 1792 London

A portrait of Arthur Murphy (1727–1805) Oil on canvas: 30 × 25 in / 76.5 × 63.5 cm Painted 1773–9 Reynolds painted the Irish playwright, actor and wit Arthur Murphy for the library of the brewer Henry Thrale at Streatham Park. The portrait was one of the twelve ‘Streatham Worthies’ depicted by Reynolds, which included Dr Samuel Johnson, the actor David Garrick, politician Edmund Burke and Reynolds himself. This dazzling intellectual circle was typical of the breadth of Reynolds’s interests. It made him a superb first President of the Royal Academy, which this year celebrates its 250th anniversary.
