London Art Week | 29 Nov to 7 Dec 2018 PAINTINGS | DRAWINGS | WORKS OF ART

THE WINTER INCARNATION of London Art Week looks set to attract a substantial audience of visiting collectors, curators and art enthusiasts. The December sales at the major auction houses were the catalyst for this now much bigger enterprise, which includes dealer exhibitions, events and talks across a wide range of disciplines in Mayfair and St James’s.

A talk at Callisto Fine Art will focus on a rare marble bust of Mary Shelley carved by Camillo Pistrucci in 1843. The availability of this work coincides well with the 200th anniversary of the author’s Gothic novel, Frankenstein. Stephen Ongpin Fine Art will host a talk and stage an exhibition with the theme of commercial illustration and design and at Robilant + Voena the subject of portraiture and fashion will be explored. There will be a display of antique garments and a collaboration with the historic Savile Row tailors, Henry Poole.

Portrait of Francesca Gambereschi Baldovinetti, by Santi di Titi (1539–1603). Canvas, 59 by 45 cm. ROBILANT + VOENA, 38 DOVER STREET, W1S

Sam Fogg will reveal seven objects over seven days in a gradually evolving presentation. A short daily lunchtime talk will focus on each piece. Selected medieval stained glass, metalwork, paintings and sculpture will demonstrate that not all art from this period followed convention. Other themed displays will include Art Nouveau ceramics at Raccanello Leprince, views of Venice at Charles Beddington Ltd and a private collection of African and Oceanic art at Forge & Lynch. Individual museum-quality works will also be plentiful at the auctions. Sotheby’s and Christie’s will each offer an important royal portrait by Sir Anthony van Dyck; one depicting Charles, Prince of Wales, and the other portraying Princess Mary. THE SECOND STAGING of Fine Arts Paris will see an enlarged more elaborate event in the new home of the Carrousel du Louvre. Forty galleries including seventeen new exhibitors will show works on paper, paintings and sculpture ranging from archaeological objects to recent creations.

Presumed portrait of Jacques-François Chéreau, by Jean-Baptiste Perronneau (1715–83). Canvas, 70 by 55 cm. F. BAULME FINE ARTS, PARIS

In the spirit of Drawings Week (which coincides with the Salon du Dessin in March) there will be an emphasis on sculpture, not only at the fair, but also at participating museums and institutions. Museums taking part in Sculpture Week will include Musée d’Orsay, Musée Bourdelle, Atelier Brancusi/Centre Pompidou and Musée Maillol. A scholarly symposium will be staged in celebration of the opening of the new sculpture gallery at the Petit Palais (to be inaugurated on 7th November) and will include talks and a study day focussing on public monuments and statuary in Paris. The fair will publish twelve scholarly texts to accompany this enterprising programme. There will also be an opportunity to visit the City of Paris’s warehouse for artworks. Normally closed to the public this vast former machinery room in the suburb of Ivry houses over 2,000 original plasters. A museum loan exhibition at the fair will show the diverse materials and techniques of the painter and sculptor Henry de Triqueti (1803–74). This is in partnership with the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Orléans and the Musée Girodet, Montargis, which hold the contents of the artist’s studio.
