A selection of highlights to be exhibited at the Fair of TeFAF Maastricht is set once again to eclipse all other international art fairs with the variety and volume of fine objects for sale. institutional buyers and private collectors from around the world cherish this event due to the unprecedented quality of works and insistence on authenticity. This year the fair has pursued a more transparent selection policy with the inclusion of an astonishing forty new exhibitors. Fine and decorative arts from twenty-nine categories will be offered for sale; ranging from ancient artefacts to modern and contemporary works. in these pages we attempt to convey the breadth of the fair through the objects illustrated.

The ThirTy-seCond ediTion

Italy Mother of the Arts, by Pompeo Marchesi (1783–1858). White Carrara marble, 131 by 99 cm. WALTER PADOVANI, MILAN

A significant feature of the event will be the museum loan exhibition, which reinforces the affinity that exists between the fair and the museum world. This year’s exhibition will be drawn from the staatliche Kunstsammlungen dresden (dresden state Art Collections). Twentythree works have been selected before they go on permanent display at the Paraderäume (state Apartments) and the semperbau (semper Building) which will reopen later in the year after extensive reconstruction, restoration and refurbishment. highlights will include The abduction of Ganymede by rembrandt van rijn, the crown of Augustus the strong (elector of saxony), created in 1697, and a rare set of Meissen vases that once belonged to Louis XV. TeFAF’s commitment to cultural heritage continues with an award of €50,000 from its Museum restoration Fund. Beneficiaries this year are the national Gallery, London, for the restoration of Anthony van dyck’s Equestrian portrait of Charles Iand the Museum Volkenkunde, Leiden, for work on a rare screen by the Japanese artist Kawahara Keiga depicting the View of Deshima in Nagasaki Bay. Private and institutional collectors from around the world will make the annual pilgrimage to mix with fellow experts and connoisseurs within their field of interest. Thirty-nine international dealers will present works spanning most European schools from the Italian and Northern Renaissance to the modern day. All works are vetted for quality and authenticity so that purchases can be made in good faith.

Two loan exhibitions will take place on site: Festivities in Paris will feature drawings from Musée Carnavalet-Histoire de Paris (currently closed for renovation) and jeweller Maison Chaumet will lend a selection of jewellery designs embracing the theme of nature. This second exhibition will be curated by botanist Marc Jenson, who is known for his work on the exhibition Jardins at the Grand Palais in 2017. Drawings Week this year will involve twenty museums and institutions offering access to their graphic arts collections and current exhibitions. Some of these displays are usually off-limits to the public so visitor numbers for guided tours and passes will be limited. Some highlights will be: Leonardo de Vinci and the Italian Renaissance at Beaux-Arts de Paris; a private tour of the the graphic arts cabinets at Sèvres-Cité de la Céramique; architectural drawings at Bibliothèque National de France; Franz Marc / August Macke: The adventure of the Blue Rider at the Musée de l’Orangerie; and Black Models: From Géricault to Matisse at Musée d’Orsay.
