The Renaissance Casket from Newbattle Abbey, by The Master of Perspective. Nuremberg. 1565. Woods, bone, mother of pearl, alabaster and fire-gilt iron, 35 by 53 by 36 cm. TRINITY FINE ART & GEORG LAUE KUNSTKAMMER LTD. EXHIBITING AT: 15 OLD BOND STREET, W1S
This year London Art Week will incorporate the largest ever group of visiting and resident galleries, dealers and auction houses since the event began. Works offered for sale will range broadly from Antiquity to modern and contemporary art and will embrace furniture, works of art, textiles, ceramics, paintings, drawings and sculpture. As always, the event will occur within the London gallery districts of Mayfair and St James’s. Here we reveal some of the curated and themed exhibitions, which are a defining element of this important annual event. Trinity Fine Art and Georg Laue, Kunstkammer will unveil a major Renaissance artwork not seen in a public setting since 1883. The Court Casket of Newbattle Abbey was created by ‘The Master of Perspective’ in Nuremberg, 1565, and demonstrates the exquisite marquetry unique to an important South German workshop. Another exceptional offering will be From London to Lucknow; A Re-discovered Collection of Drawings by Johan Zoffany (1733–1810), at the gallery of Andrew Clayton-Payne. These exhibited sheets are a significant addition to the few sparse drawings previously attributable to Zoffany. Over forty drawings by the nineteenth-century artist Adolph Menzel will be on view at Stephen Ongpin Fine Art. ‘A World Caught with the Eye and Held by the Pencil’: Drawings by Adolph Menzel will be the first comprehensive showing of the artist’s drawings in the United Kingdom since 1984. John Mitchell Fine Paintings will exhibit From Fjord to Forest: Nineteenth Century Northern Landscapes including paintings from the collection of Asbjorn Lunde. This selection of oil studies and formal works mainly by Swiss, German and Norwegian painters will examine the lingering influence of the Romantic Movement on European art.

Franses; Medieval Art in England from the 6th to the 16th centuries, at Sam Fogg; and Expressive Souls will be the title at Daniel Katz Gallery. Olivier Malingue will show an intriguing mix of works from the 1950s onwards, under the banner of Abstract or Not? Works will include pieces by Georges Braque, Jean Dubuffet and Willem de Kooning. FRANCOIS GERARD presented the first version of his Belisarius at the 1795 Salon (whereabouts unknown), this second, smaller variant version (oil on canvas 91 by 74 cm) dating from 1797 was painted to correct the draftsmanship of the general’s right arm and foot, while the artist added the helmet hanging from Belisarius’s belt, to emphasise his earlier military career. It may also have been a response to his friend Girodet’s Sleep of Endymion – the head of Belisarius’s guide is almost identical in both pose and features to the head of Girodet’s sleeping shepherd boy. Sold by Stair Sainty Gallery to the J.Paul Getty Museum, 2005.
EUGÈNE DELACROIX produced some fifty paintings (as well as an even larger number of watercolours and drawings) of feline subjects, in which lions or tigers are either the main subject or the principal participants in a dramatic scene. Lion Devouring a Goat was exhibited at the 1848 Salon, where it received positive notices, and its first owner, Gustave Arosa, was one of the artist’s most important early patrons. Signed: Eug. Delacroix, oil on canvas: 27 x 35.5 cm.

ENRIQUETA HARRIS FRANKFORT CURATORIAL ASSISTANT (Full-time) 2 Year Fixed-Term Contract
FLORENCE GOULD FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP The Clark Art Institute’s Research and Academic Program awards funded residential fellowships to scholars, critics, and curators of exceptional promise and accomplishment. The Florence Gould Foundation Fellowship is awarded to a senior scholar or curator, with priority given to an applicant from a French museum or institution of higher education or to an individual pursuing a project in the field of French art and visual studies. Proposed research projects should display a commitment to innovative inquiry in the history, theory, and interpretation of art and visual culture. Application deadline: October 15, 2019 For more information and application details, please visit clarkart.edu/rap/fellowship
The Wallace Collection is delighted to honour the memory of Dr. Enriqueta Harris Frankfort with a two-year curatorial assistant post that combines museum experience with Spanish art- historical studies. Before her death in 2006, Dr. Harris Frankfort was a leading authority on Spanish painting in the UK, particularly the works of Velázquez and Goya. The Wallace Collection is proud to collaborate with the Centro de Estudios Europa Hispanica (CEEH) in the appointment of this role, and is extremely grateful for their on-going support. This post is intended to strengthen the curatorial team and specifically its research activities in the field of Spanish painting, but also to provide a professional start in the career of someone intending to make a career in curatorship. It is envisaged as a training opportunity for someone with little experience of museum work but with a formal academic training, and is designed to encourage an early-stage researcher to engage with museum objects and produce new research. For further details, applicants are advised to consult the Wallace Collection website or contact the HR department at the Wallace Collection. Application deadline: 1st July 2019.
