Simiolus
Netherlands quarterly for the history of art
Some 20 papers and reviews were published in Simiolus, volume 40 (2018), mostly on Dutch and Flemish art. There was new material on the sixteenth-century patronage of the Sauli family in Genoa, news about Frans Floris and the desire to paint like music, and there was the most convincing reading of Rembrandt’s 1626 Leiden history painting to have been published so far. A complete issue was dedicated to Old Age Creativity, and there was a reconstruction of the spectacular De Smeth van Alphen Collection, sold in its entirety in 1810. How come you missed it? Simiolus, volume 41 (2019), will be at least as interesting, and if you subscribe now,
you will be among the first to read about Paulus de Kempenaer’s highly idiosyncratic response to the work of Hieronymus Bosch during the Dutch Revolt, about a huge and very important rediscovered late work by Van Heemskerck, and about the Dutch interest in Willem de Kooning’s work in the 1960s. In addition, a complete issue will be devoted to the amazing sixteenth-century sculptor Johann Gregor van der Schardt. Subscribe now! Institutions pay 100 euros a year for a volume, private individuals pay 60. If you are at all interested in northern art, be sure not to miss it. Over 300 pages a year on your favorite field of study. Visit simiolus.nl for the subscription terms.

BRITISH ART FAIR 2019 SAATCHI GALLERY, LONDON SW3 | 3rd-6th OCTOBER | BRITISHARTFAIR.CO.UK
FOLLOWING ON FROM the success of the first staging of the British Art
Fair in 2018, this year’s event is set to reinforce the reputation of the Saatchi Gallery as the new home for a fair devoted solely to modern and contemporary British artworks. The fair’s new name, branding and venue proved to be a hit last year with exhibitors and buying public alike. (Under different ownership it was formerly known as the 20/21 British Art Fair). An important change will be the event’s later date, which will coincide with the art fairs Frieze and Frieze Masters, making London an even more attractive destination for collectors and enthusiasts.
Study for La Petite Afrique, by Graham Sutherland (1903–80). 1953. Mixed media on paper, 35.5 by 28 cm. CHRISTOPHER KINGZETT FINE ART, LONDON
Once more, all three floors will be utilised by selling galleries, and specially curated exhibitions will again provide an added allure for visitors. The ground floor will accommodate David Inshaw: Looking Back, Looking Forward. This retrospective will showcase many fine paintings imbued with Inshaw’s unique visionary sensibilities. He conveys a poised stillness in his sparsely peopled landscapes, which often depict the Wiltshire Downs where he has lived and worked for nearly half a century. On the first floor a second exhibition, entitled YBAS, will be curated by a leading YBA, Gavin Turk. This display will be dedicated to the gallerist Karsten Schubert (1961–2019), who played a key role during the YBA years. Another retrospective, Alan Davie: Totality of Life, will be staged on the second floor. Alan Davie’s (1920–2014) international reputation as a leading light of Modern British painting has been further cemented in 2019 by exhibitions of his work at Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery and the Hepworth Wakefield (opening 19th October). Davie’s complex paintings interweave multicultural motifs, shapes, words and signs with an expressive intensity. The freedom and scale of Jackson Pollock’s work is documented as an influence on Davie after a visit to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, in 1948. The British Art Fair will have much to offer seasoned collectors, museum curators and art enthusiasts with works to suit most pockets and tastes.
