London Art Week | 1 to 6 December 2019 A COLLECTIVE OF AUCTIONS AND SELLING EXHIBITIONS IN MAYFAIR AND ST JAMES’S

THE THIRD EDITION of London Art Week Winter is set to attract a large international audience of collectors, curators and art devotees. The major December auctions were the inspiration for this dealer-led venture consisting of selling exhibitions, talks and a new symposium.

Themed gallery exhibitions promise to be rich and diverse and will include: Retablos: Spanish paintings from the 14th to 16th centuries. Staged at Sam Fogg Ltd and in collaboration with Galeria Caylus from Madrid, this display will be curated by Alberto Velasco Gonzàles (University of Lleida). At Colnaghi the display Resurrection will explore this theme through Judeo-Christian art (Jesus and Lazarus) and also the ancient world (Osirus and Orpheus). Thematically closer to these shores will be a presentation at John Mitchell Fine Paintings entitled Romantick situations – castles and the picturesque in eighteenth-century Britain. Landscapes by Julius Ceasar Ibbetson, Richard Wilson and Paul Sandby will be for sale. One of three angels from the Reredos for Saint Paul’s Cathedral, by Attilio Piccirilli (1866–1945) and Furio Piccirilli (1868–1949). 1886–87. Marble, 73 by 40 cm. TRINITY FINE ART, 15 OLD BOND STREET, W1S

Peggy Guggenheim, at Ordovas in Savile Row will reveal new insights into the gallerist’s early experience as an art dealer. Her first gallery, Guggenheim Jeune lasted just eighteen months on Cork Street before the outbreak of the Second World War. Examples of Guggenheim’s collecting interests at this time (Abstraction and Surrealism) will be revealed. Also on show will be her thwarted plans to open a museum of modern art in London. The National Gallery will host a fascinating talk on daily life behind the scenes for gallerists, curators and collectors. Those taking part will include Francesca Whitlum-Cooper, resident curator of paintings from 1600–1800. In a similar vein the venue will also stage a symposium which also aims to define the art world of today. (Details unavailable at time of going to press).
