EXCEPTIONAL MODERN & CONTEMPORARY ART
IV
Simiolus
Netherlands quarterly for the history of art
Some 20 papers and reviews were published in Simiolus, volume 40 (2018), mostly on Dutch and Flemish art. There was new material on the sixteenth-century patronage of the Sauli family in Genoa, news about Frans Floris and the desire to paint like music, and there was the most convincing reading of Rembrandt’s 1626 Leiden history painting to have been published so far. A complete issue was dedicated to Old Age Creativity, and there was a reconstruction of the spectacular De Smeth van Alphen Collection, sold in its entirety in 1810. How come you missed it? Simiolus, volume 41 (2019), is at least as interesting, and if you subscribe now, you
will be among the first to have read about Paulus de Kempenaer’s highly idiosyncratic response to the work of Hieronymus Bosch during the Dutch Revolt, about a huge and very important rediscovered late work by Van Heemskerck, and about the Dutch interest in Willem de Kooning’s work in the 1960s. In addition, a complete issue will be devoted to the amazing sixteenth-century sculptor Johann Gregor van der Schardt. Subscribe now! Institutions pay 100 euros a year for a volume, private individuals pay 60. If you are at all interested in northern art, be sure not to miss it. Over 300 pages a year on your favorite field of study. Visit simiolus.nl for the subscription terms.
