This prize comprises an award of £2,000 for an essay of distinction which reflects Sir Denis Mahon’s studies, research and interests. Whilst Sir Denis focussed on the 17th century period and especially on the work of Guercino, Carracci, Caravaggio and Nicolas Poussin, his much wider range of art historical interests included the 15th and 16th centuries, and also certain key modern and contemporary artists. Sir Denis was a contemporary and a friend of Graham Sutherland, Stanley Spencer, Henry Moore, Eduardo Paolozzi, Giorgio Morandi and he much admired their work. Of the contemporary artists, he particularly liked the post-war avant-garde conceptual British artists, as well as David Hockney, Grayson Perry and others. We welcome essays on any of these aspects and artists including the contemporary ones. The prize is open to undergraduates or post graduate students aged 30 years or below.

John Philip Scholarship for the Study of Spanish Art The Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica (CEEH) and the School of Art History at the University of St Andrews are delighted to announce the creation of the John Phillip Doctoral Scholarship in Spanish Art and Visual Culture, to start in September 2020. This scholarship is available to both Home/EU and Overseas candidates and is tenable for three years. Fully funded by the CEEH, it covers tuition fees, plus an annual stipend of £15,285 for living expenses, and an annual research allowance of £5,000. Research projects that focus on the history of Spanish art and visual culture between ca. 1600 and 1700 would be particularly welcome. Proposals devoted to the reception of seventeenth-century Spanish art in later periods, up to ca. 1900, will also be considered. The University of St Andrews invites applications via its online process until Monday 25 May 2020: https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/study/pg/apply/research/ For informal queries, intending applicants may contact Dr José Ramón Marcaida: jrm32@st-andrews.ac.uk This scholarship has been created through the generosity of CEEH (Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica) in association with ARTES, the Iberian and Latin-American Visual Arts Group.
