two distinct phases, commencing with Indian and Islamic art followed by East Asian art, with some dealers and salerooms showing in both categories. Since March this year the Covid-19 virus has cast a shadow over art fairs and events with most global fairs postponing or cancelling. Asian Art in London therefore is a cautious but welcome change from purely virtual events with gallery exhibitions operating with social distancing, private appointments (some), and sanitisation. To be safe, some exhibitors have chosen not to offer refreshments or take part in late-night receptions, so it is advisable for visitors to plan carefully. This celebration of Asian art in central London will embrace ancient and modern works from the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, Central Asia, China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. For precise details and to download the excellent AAL guide with maps, relevant museums, collections and Asian societies please visit www.asianartinlondon.com

Cardsharps on Trial: Thwaytes v. Sotheby’s Richard E. Spear In 2006 Sir Denis Mahon announced that a version of Caravaggio’s famous Cardsharps that he had bought at Sotheby’s was not a copy, as the auction house had stated, but was by Caravaggio himself. As a result, the vendor, Lancelot Thwaytes, sued Sotheby’s for negligence. Vividly written by an eminent art historian who acted as an expert witness in the case, this handsomely illustrated account of one of the major art trials of recent times will be of great interest to dealers, conservators and lawyers, as well as all admirers of Caravaggio.

Simiolus Simiolus has just begun publishing its 42nd volume and we are proud of it! In its first issue, we offer an important study on the innovation of Netherlandish funerary sculpture in the early sixteenth century by Ruben Suykerbuyk and an exciting reading of Michelangelo’s criticism of Flemish painting as recorded by Francisco de Holanda by James Hall. Another paper proves that the only portrait of Felipe de Guevara that we thought we had is of someone else altogether. The centerpiece of this issue, however, is an in-depth study and bilingual publication of the first notes on Netherlandish art and artists

But you can also take out your own subscription, and we would be very happy if you did. Institutions pay 100 euro a year, individuals pay 60. Over 300 pages a year on the history of Netherlandish art. Visit our site at Simiolus.nl for the conditions of subscription.
