Cardsharps on Trial: Thwaytes v. Sotheby’s Richard E. Spear In 2006 Sir Denis Mahon announced that a version of Caravaggio’s famous Cardsharps that he had bought at Sotheby’s was not a copy, as the auction house had stated, but was by Caravaggio himself. 27th November – 4th December 2020 The current pandemic continues to disrupt art events around the world, but organisers and galleries are going to great lengths to offer works to collectors in a meaningful way. The Winter edition of London Art Week presses ahead undeterred and will see physical exhibitions mounted in several galleries in Mayfair and St James’s. A digital platform will allow a wider pool of dealers to show an impressive range of works.

Paris will be both an on-site event and a virtual fair (with nonattending foreign exhibitors showing works online). due to travel restrictions the forty exhibitors will overwhelmingly be from France, with many galleries taking part for the first time. Works will be stringently vetted for authenticity and quality; sanitary regulations will be rigorously followed at the event.

Fine Arts Week will offer private visits to off-site partner institutions. By chance, the theme this year will echo the sculptural theme of this issue of the Burlington Magazine. the twenty participating institutions will include Musée de l’Armée, the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and three Head of a man with a blue headband, by Pierre hubert Subleyras (1699–1749).
