Cardsharps on Trial: Thwaytes v. Sotheby’s Richard E. Spear In 2006 Sir Denis Mahon announced that a version of Caravaggio’s famous Cardsharps that he had bought at Sotheby’s was not a copy, as the auction house had stated, but was by Caravaggio himself. As a result, the vendor, Lancelot Thwaytes, sued Sotheby’s for negligence. Vividly written by an eminent art historian who acted as an expert witness in the case, this handsomely illustrated account of one of the major art trials of recent times will be of great interest to dealers, conservators and lawyers, as well as all admirers of Caravaggio.

London Art Week Winter

27th November – 4th December 2020 The current pandemic continues to disrupt art events around the world, but organisers and galleries are going to great lengths to offer works to collectors in a meaningful way. The Winter edition of London Art Week presses ahead undeterred and will see physical exhibitions mounted in several galleries in Mayfair and St James’s. A digital platform will allow a wider pool of dealers to show an impressive range of works. London Art Week is always a worthwhile occasion for buyers and enthusiasts to descend on the capital. The 2020 Winter iteration is no exception, as it has partnered with nearby museums, including the National Gallery, where a symposium marking the 500th anniversary of Raphael’s death will take place.
