Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art Durham University has recently appointed Claudia Hopkins as Professor and Director of the Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art on secondment from the University of Edinburgh. Between January and March 2021 the Zurbarán Centre in association with ARTES Iberian & Latin American Visual Culture Group will host a weekly online research seminar series, usually on Wednesdays at 6:00pm. For details, see www.dur.ac.uk/zurbaran. To receive a link to each seminar, email Zurbaran.Centre@durham.ac.uk. The Zurbarán Centre is working towards a symposium to mark the opening of the Spanish Gallery in 2021. Launched in 2017, the Zurbarán Centre aims to promote and generate innovative research relating to the arts in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. Located at Bishop Auckland, it is named after Francisco de Zurbarán, the author of the series of paintings Jacob and His Twelve Sons, which have been at Auckland Castle for over 250 years.
Zurbarán Doctoral Scholarship for the Study of Spanish Art The Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art is pleased to invite applications for a fully funded doctoral scholarship in Spanish art-historical studies, commencing at Durham University in the academic year 2021/22. The scholarship supports projects on Spanish art from the Golden Age to around 1900, including the reception of Spanish art in Britain. The scholarship is tenable for three years full-time or five years parttime. The successful candidate will enjoy privileged access to the Spanish Gallery at The Auckland Project in Bishop Auckland, which houses one of the most remarkable collections of Spanish art in the UK. Applications should be submitted to Durham University programme following the standard process of the Durham Doctoral Studentships. Applicants are advised to contact the administration of the Zurbarán Centre (Zurbaran.Centre@durham.ac.uk) well before the deadline of 31 March. This scholarship has been created thanks to the generous support of the CEEH (Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica), in association with ARTES and The Auckland Project.
Zurbarán and His Twelve Sons A film by Arantxa Aguirre Script: John Healey with the collaboration of Jonathan Brown Production: CEEH, The Auckland Project and Intervenciones Novo Film Run time: 72 minutes Audio: Spanish, English, Hebrew Subtitles: Spanish, English This documentary narrates the vicissitudes of Jacob and His Twelve Sons, a series of 13 canvases painted by Francisco de Zurbarán in Seville around 1640 that have hung for 250 years in the residence of the bishops of Durham. During the renovation of their usual headquarters, the Zurbaráns have been exhibited in the Meadows Museum, The Frick Collection and the Israel Museum. The film follows this international tour, interviewing specialists in Spanish Golden Age, while also explaining how these works have become a tool for social transformation thanks to the initiative of a financier born in that area. After premiering at the Seminci Film Festival the documentary has been shown at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. Thanks to the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington DC, it will be screened at major American museums.

COLLECTING MURILLO IN BRITAIN AND IRELAND
ENRIQUETA HARRIS FRANKFORT CURATORIAL ASSISTANT (Full-time)
The art of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682) captured the Collecting Murillo in Britain and Ireland British imagination in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Wealthy collectors competed for the choicest pictures, artists imitated his styles and adopted his subjects, and much ink was spilled in praise of the painter. This book explores the collectors, connoisseurs, travellers and artists who brought Murillo’s art to prominence in the British Isles, casting new light on a fundamental episode in the history of reception of Spanish art in Europe. Edited by Isabelle Kent, with texts by Thomas Bean, Xavier Bray, Hugh Brigstocke, Xanthe Brooke, José Luis Colomer, Véronique Gerard Powell, Claudia Hopkins, Isabelle Kent, Hilary Macartney, Philip McEvansoneya, Thierry Morel and Robert Wenley. Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica (CEEH) in association with The Wallace Collection 352 pages; 136 colour illustrations; hardcover; 21 x 24 cm. Madrid, 2020. ISBN 978-84-15245-96-4. €40
2 Year Fixed-Term Contract The Wallace Collection is delighted to announce that it will be continuing its programme of appointing a two-year position combining museum experience and Spanish art-historical studies in memory of Enriqueta Harris Frankfort. Before her death in 2006, Dr Harris Frankfort was a leading authority on Spanish painting in the UK, particularly the works of Velázquez and Goya. The Wallace Collection is proud to be collaborating with the Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica (CEEH) in the appointment of this role, and is extremely grateful for their on-going support. This post is intended to strengthen the curatorial team and specifically its research activities in the field of Spanish painting, but also to provide a professional start in the art of curating. It is envisaged as a training opportunity for someone with little experience of museum work but with a formal academic training, and is designed to encourage an early-stage researcher to engage with museum objects and produce new research. For further details, applicants are advised to consult the Wallace Collection website or contact the HR department at the Wallace Collection. Application deadline: 15th September 2021.
Velázquez and the Prince: Baltasar Carlos in the Riding School Following the recent restoration of Prince Baltasar Carlos in the Riding School, the Wallace Collection will be organising a special conference in collaboration with the Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica (CEEH). Bringing together international scholars working on portraiture at the Spanish Habsburg Court as well as a specialists in Velázquez’s œuvre, this event will explore the context in which it was painted as well as discuss the complex relationship it has with a fully accepted autograph version now in a private collection. For further announcements on the event, please visit the Wallace Collection website. wallacecollection.org

Simiolus Simiolus 42 (2020) has just been completed, and we hope to embark on the next volume soon. In 2020, we published papers on topics as far apart as Quinten Massys and James Ensor, and we were especially happy with the study by Laurens Kleine Deters on Marcus van Vaernewijck – including a transcription and full translation of that author’s 1568 notes on art. All the work published this year shows that the field is not exhausted and that an international community of scholars is still working on it. C A R AVAG G I O ’ S Cardsharps on Trial: Thwaytes v. Sotheby’s Richard E. Spear In 2006 Sir Denis Mahon announced that a version of Caravaggio’s famous Cardsharps that he had bought at Sotheby’s was not a copy, as the auction house had stated, but was by Caravaggio himself. As a result, the vendor, Lancelot Thwaytes, sued Sotheby’s for negligence. Vividly written by an eminent art historian who acted as an expert witness in the case, this handsomely illustrated account of one of the major art trials of recent times will be of great interest to dealers, conservators and lawyers, as well as all admirers of Caravaggio.
