Not seen on the market since 1907, this drawing was recognized as by Michelangelo only in 2019 by Christie’s Old Master Drawings department. Partially based on a fresco by Masaccio, the work – one of the few by Michelangelo still in private hands – is a major addition to his early drawings.

HENDRICK GOLTZIUS (1558–1617)
Pluto, after Polidoro da Caravaggio Pen and brown ink and brown wash, heightened with white, over an underdrawing in black chalk, on blue paper 264 x 170 mm. (103⁄8 x 65⁄8 in.) This fine drawing can be dated to the period of Goltzius’s stay in Rome, between January and August 1591, when he made several copies of Polidoro da Caravaggio’s painted facades that were seen throughout the city. The sheet copies the figure of Pluto, the god of the underworld who holds a flaming torch to light his way; this was one of a group of now-lost monochrome frescoes of eight Olympian gods in niches by Polidoro that adorned the façade of a house on the Quirinal Hill. Goltzius made finished drawings of each of the eight gods depicted on Polidoro’s façade. Six of these (including another Pluto) are in the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, while one is in the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin and the last drawing has been lost since the 18th century. Goltzius made engravings after each of Polidoro’s frescoes, and his engraving of Pluto is, in fact, the only print in the series for which more than one preparatory drawing is known.

edition of the Salon du Dessin will once again occupy the splendid Neo-classical space within the Palais Brongniart, the historic home of the Paris stock exchange. Located in the 2nd arrondissement, it lies within the gallery district and a short walk from the Musée du Louvre and other fine public collections. The thirty-nine exhibitors (nineteen from overseas) will, as always, attract institutional and private collectors who will be able to acquire works and meet with fellow experts and connoisseurs. This edition will also welcome five newcomers. Drawings spanning most European schools from the Renaissance to modern and contemporary movements will be available. The one exception is Galerie Tamenaga, a specialist in Japanese modernist works.

Every drawing will be authenticated and checked for quality so that buyers can enjoy an atmosphere of candour and can have confidence in all acquisitions. The fair’s 15th International Symposium will be entitled The Art of Gardens on Paper: Designing, Projecting, Representing and will be chaired by Pierre Rosenberg with Monique Mosser acting as the scientific expert. Twelve scholars, curators and experts will speak, including Victor Hundsbuckler, curator of the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Louvre. This year the on-site institutional loan exhibition will show drawings by Achille Duchêne (1866–1947) sourced from the holdings of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. Duchêne was a landscape architect who, along with his father Henri, helped revive the jardin à la française style, incorporating both classical and innovative elements into his designs. The 2022 iteration of Drawings Week will incorporate around twenty museum exhibitions and graphic art collections including those of the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Château de Versailles, Fondation Custodia and the Centre Pompidou. Many of these displays will reflect the themes of nature, landscape and botany. Private visits will be arranged to many of these institutions with curator-led tours. English Garden Eccentrics Three hundred years of extraordinary groves, burrowings, mountains and menageries
Todd Longstaffe-Gowan In his new book, Todd Longstaffe-Gowan reveals a series of obscure and eccentric English garden-makers who, between the early seventeenth and the early twentieth centuries, created intensely personal and idiosyncratic gardens that expressed the singularity of the characters behind them and which, in themselves, were a form of autobiography.

PHOTO LONDON , an important fixture for collectors, international dealers and galleries and all enthusiasts for the art of photography, will return to Somerset House for its seventh edition to celebrate historic masters as well as emerging artists.
The 2022 edition of the fair places a particular focus on fashion: as part of its public programme, an exhibition of work by this year’s Photo London Master of Photography, the British artist Nick Knight, will be presented alongside an homage to the late fashion photographer Frank Horvat (1928–2020). The fair’s acclaimed ‘Discovery’ section, which celebrates emerging talent, will host a special presentation, Photography Crossing Boundaries, including sculpture, NFTs and a collaboration by the British artist duo Walter & Zoniel. A regular among the fair’s seventy-five exhibitors is Peter Fetterman Gallery, Los Angeles, which will return to the fair to launch The Power of Photography, a book of twentieth-century images that Fetterman conceived and curated during the COVID-19 lockdown. Other returning exhibitors include Flowers Gallery, London, which will dedicate a booth to Edward Burtynsky, renowned for his sustained investigation of human altered landscapes, which results in abstract, painterly photographs, and Robert Morat Galerie, Berlin, which will show new work by the artist Hannah Hughes. Vintage and historic works have always played an important role at Photo London and the seventh iteration of the fair will include a number of significant presentations, among them Robert Hershkowitz Ltd, London, who return to the fair with works by major photographers of the early nineteenth century.

understated and “smoothed” off. This style relied on the power and volume of the subject to take over from
the decoration of detailed representation. He was at the start of the 50 year period that sculpture developed into Modern Art. Bugatti’s style was well developed when he was drawn
to Antwerp, where from 1907 until his death in 1916 the changes in his Ouevre can be seen. Collin met Bugatti on his arrival and they shared their association with Dupon. Collin continued to work, apart from the First World War, until the Second World War in 1940, after which his artistic output finished.

Director, The Courtauld Institute of Art, London The Organisation The Courtauld Institute of Art is an internationally renowned centre for the teaching and research of art history and a major public gallery. The Courtauld works to increase understanding of the role of art throughout history, in all societies and across all geographies – as well as being a champion for the importance of art to society today and in the future. The Courtauld’s ambition is to transform access to art history education, by extending the horizons of what it means and ensuring as many people as possible can benefit from a better comprehension of the visual world around us. The recent 10 year strategic relationship announced between the Courtauld and King’s College London will enhance this aim through greater academic and educational collaborations and the development of joint courses across many disciplines. This sits alongside the Courtauld Connects transformation project which has achieved major renovation of the Gallery and now moves its focus to creating world class University facilities. The role The Courtauld is seeking to hire a bold, inspirational figurehead of international standing for the role of the Director. There are four significant pillars that the Director will own and lead the Institute. These are Academic, Gallery, fundraising and administration. This person will be expected to lead this world-renowned institution with integrity and imagination in the context of global change, increasing responsibilities and public expectations in the higher education and culture sectors.
This is a rare opportunity to enhance the Courtauld’s mission and vision for the 21st Century. The new Director will transform The Courtauld into an Institute fit for profound global socio-economic and digital change, while ensuring that its reputation as a world-leading academic institution grows ever stronger. They will be expected to build strategic partnerships that extend the Institute’s reach and lead by example to create a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility, as well as innovation. The person This person will need to have a proven track record as an innovative head of a world-leading, high profile academic or cultural institution with the ability to develop, motivate, and unify teams around a common vision. They will be respected as a leader who can deliver the highest academic standards. They will need to demonstrate significant cultural credibility, alongside strong experience negotiating within and dealing with an international environment, preferably with a strong academic leadership background. This person will also need experience of growing an enterprise which touches many different communities, including significant patrons and partners and, essentially, the public, including students and Gallery visitors. The person will need to personally lead the fundraising and development activities of the Institute that will be so important in delivering the vision.
Remuneration will be commensurate with the standing of the role. Please reply with full details to Spencer Stuart. Email CourtauldDirector@spencerstuart.com quoting reference: 43087-002. Closing date for applications: 31st May 2022.

Simiolus In the most recent volume of Simiolus, we have published a previously unknown Van Eyck document and a detailed study on the identity of the male sitter in the Arnolfini portrait (definitely not Giovanni). We also revealed the identity of the family portrayed in Adriaen van Ostade’s famous picture in the Louvre, and published an evaluation of the archival sources on the living conditions of the northern Netherlandish painters in seventeenth-century Italy – to mention just a few of the papers in volume 43 (2021). In the concluding issue you will find – among much else – the reason for the hitherto unexplained presence of the monumental Atlas on Amsterdam’s seventeenth-century Town Hall and a study of the career of the unscrupulous art dealer Leo Nardus, who merrily sold masterpieces as well as fakes to some of the greatest collectors of the gilded age.

Netherlands quarterly for the history of art Simiolus has been critically serving the history of Netherlandish art for over fifty years now. It is published in English, and pays for the cost of translation of papers submitted in Dutch, German, French or Italian which we have agreed to produce. But to go on providing that service while retaining our very modest subscription fee, we do need your support. So please urge your library to subscribe or continue subscribing, and/or take out a subscription yourself! Institutions pay € 100 a year and individuals pay € 60 – for volumes of over 300 pages. Visit our site at Simiolus.nl for the conditions of subscription and information on how to advertise, where to send your copy and how to order the backsets not yet in JSTOR.
