THE DELAYED THIRTY-FIFTH

edition of TEFAF Maastricht will take

place in June this year. The 2020 March fair closed prematurely as the severity of the COVID-19 outbreak became apparent, and last year a successful online event was staged in September. The TEFAF brand eclipses other top international art fairs due to the La Danse des Bacchantes – La Grande Vitrine Faune et Faunesse, by Maison Roux et Brunet and Léon Messagé (1842– 1901). 1890. broad scope, quantity and high quality of the objects for sale. All works are professionally vetted. Private collectors, institutional buyers and art lovers from around the globe will journey to southern Holland to take in the finest art works on the market. Over the years a number of truly spectacular works have surfaced for sale. In 2020, for example, Vincent van Gogh’s Peasant woman in front of a farmhouse featured with Dickinson (London). This year, Caylus (Madrid) will show an important oil by Francisco de Goya: Portrait of Don Juan López de Robredo, Embroiderer to King Carlos IV of Spain (1798–99). As well as welcoming back long-established specialist galleries, the fair is inviting a selection of new dealers to participate with smaller booths. This year’s ‘Showcase’ will feature six new entrants from London and Paris. From London, Bartha Contemporary Art will show conceptual works, and from Paris, Galerie Nicolas Bourriaud will have 19th- and 20th-century French sculpture. The fair will be celebrating ten years of the TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund by awarding a donation to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam), for the conservation and

THIS MONTH WE WELCOME the eleventh edition of Masterpiece

London, the high point of the London summer fair season and the meeting place of many of the world’s most distinguished art dealerships. The event will attract collectors, interior designers and art enthusiasts to the elegant grounds of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. The exhibitors span all eras from the ancient world to the modern and contemporary periods. Visitors can expect to see the finest works of fine and decorative art, including sculpture, silverware, furniture, cultural artefacts and jewellery. Masterpiece London operates with a strict ethical code and allows only dealerships with a fine reputation to exhibit. All works will be examined by a vetting committee of experts to check for authenticity and quality.

Skull of a Triceratops prorsus. Late Cretaceous period. Fossil, 170 by 115 by 150 cm. DAVID AARON, LONDON

Particular highlights include a George I walnut cabinet, an important addition to the known corpus of early 18th-century English walnut furniture; an extraordinarily complete skull of a mature Triceratops prorsus from the Late Cretaceous period; Augustus John’s marvellous double portrait of two Jamaican sisters produced during his trip to Jamaica; and a compelling likeness of Georges de Porto-Riche by Jacques-Émil Blanche, presented as a gift to his fellow artist Auguste Rodin. This year’s ‘Masterpiece Presents’ will occupy a large exhibition space at the fair’s entrance dedicated to innovative and immersive art. It will feature two monumental light installations by PakistaniAmerican artist Anila Agha, represented by Sundaram Tagore Gallery. The artist is known for her award-winning, transformative light installations, and has been the subject of three solo museum shows in the past year. understated and “smoothed” off. This style relied on the power and volume of the subject to take over from

the decoration of detailed representation. He was at the start of the 50 year period that sculpture developed into Modern Art. Bugatti’s style was well developed when he was drawn

to Antwerp, where from 1907 until his death in 1916 the changes in his Ouevre can be seen. Collin met Bugatti on his arrival and they shared their association with Dupon. Collin continued to work, apart from the First World War, until the Second World War in 1940, after which his artistic output finished.

English Garden Eccentrics Three hundred years of extraordinary groves, burrowings, mountains and menageries

Todd Longstaffe-Gowan In his new book, Todd Longstaffe-Gowan reveals a series of obscure and eccentric English garden-makers who, between the early seventeenth and the early twentieth centuries, created intensely personal and idiosyncratic gardens that expressed the singularity of the characters behind them and which, in themselves, were a form of autobiography.
