THE THIRTY-SECOND EDITION of the Florence Biennale will welcome seventy-five eminent commercial galleries and dealers to exhibit works in the Baroque setting of the Palazzo Corsini on the banks of the river Arno. Objects for sale will be mostly Italian in origin and will represent a broad period from Antiquity through old masters to the nineteenth century. There will also be a selection of fine furniture, tapestries, antiquarian books, ceramics and all manner of decorative items. Works of art will be vetted by an international committee of experts, which will add credence to the quality and provenance of acquisitions. Alongside the Biennale, the popular Florence Art Week will take place once more in the historic city centre. Launched in 2019, it boasts a varied programme of exhibitions and events hosted by public and private galleries, museums and boutiques.
A cultural programme will be staged in the Palazzo’s Salone del Trono, and will include book presentations and a conference concerned with art history and the art market. A privately sponsored award allocation will be announced during the fair for the restoration of several lesser-known decorative works of art in public collections.

The current volume of Simiolus marks a moment of transition. It is the first produced by a slightly rejuvenated board of editors, headed by Ruben Suykerbuyk, and it is with enormous gratitude that we thank retiring members Peter Hecht and Ger Luijten for their hard work and devotion in safeguarding the quality and production of our journal through the last decades. It is also the last volume to appear in print only, since we will be offering supplementary digital subscriptions and access as of volume 45 (2023). Do send your name and email address to info@simiolus.nl if you are interested, and follow us on Instagram to stay informed.
This year’s opening issue includes the first full reconstruction of Jacob Jordaens’s Psyche Gallery in his Antwerp house as well as an in-depth iconographic analysis of Jacques de Gheyn II ’s Witches’ Sabbath, and publishes the rich archive on an early and previously unknown film project by Marcel Broodthaers.

Institutions pay € 100 a year and individuals pay € 60. Visit Simiolus.nl for the conditions of subscription and information on how to advertise, where to send your copy and how to order the backsets not yet in JSTOR
It also features Elsabeth Dikkes’ paper on the career of François de Bray and his lacquer works, which was awarded the Haboldt-Mutters Prize of 2021. We are now accepting submissions for this year’s competition, the call for which is open until the end of the year. Simiolus is published in English, and pays for the cost of translation of papers submitted in Dutch, German, French or Italian which we have agreed to produce. But to go on providing that service while retaining our very modest subscription fee, we do need your support. So please urge your library to subscribe or continue subscribing, and/or take out a subscription yourself!
